In the 90's, he came really close to becoming another one of those super-talented guys who left way too early, due to suicide or overdose.

NIN didn't invent industrial music but Reznor was the first put it all together so well that the mainstream couldn't help but notice it. Pretty Hate Machine is a damn good album that is standing the test of time, I see no reason to minimize such an accomplishment.
