- kevinrose, on 05/19/2008, -6/+138I've been searching all over, anyone know how I can buy one of these?
- meishme, on 05/19/2008, -7/+104I read "Han Solo" :|
- Neticule, on 05/19/2008, -1/+72Thats pretty cool stuff, Ive never seen one of these instruments, not sure if I have even ever heard one. I really like the sound he has going about halfway in, beautiful!
- trumpydumpy, on 05/19/2008, -0/+49I think the "METAL MUSIC" shirt he's wearing refers to the metal drums he is playing
- slightlyoffbeat, on 05/19/2008, -2/+51I watched the movie, dugg this story, and didn't even realize kevin submitted it. Being a drummer/percussionist, this is one of the coolest videos I have seen in a long time. I don't read reddit and am glad I found this on digg.
so basically...STFU - scubastza, on 05/19/2008, -1/+50Ok I just watched this video, went out back and tried to play my metal trashcans. My neighbors called the cops. Bastards.

Unfortunatly it looks like you would probably have to go to Switzerland (you could take diggnation and make it a bussiness trip!!! - failsoft, on 05/19/2008, -2/+38i like the sound insulation made out of egg cartons
- trpnblies7, on 05/19/2008, -0/+35It's really strange to see a hang article on Digg. I know this instrument really well because up until recently, my uncle was actually the sole seller of hangs in the U.S. Unfortunately, I don't think he's selling them anymore because the two men who made them in Switzerland weren't able to keep up with production or something. He used to get huge shipments of them in all the time, though, and he's quite good at playing them. You're welcome to contact him if you want and see if he's able to get anymore (I'm not sure if he has any left).

The website is pretty cheesy (he's a percussionist, not a designer), but his contact information should be there. - Primatelord, on 05/19/2008, -0/+25I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more of this.
- chkdg8, on 05/19/2008, -1/+25They cost about $1500.00 and you have to be put on a waiting list. They are not mass produced but made by 2 men in switzerland.

http://www.manudelago.com/ - inactive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14geez kev and you call glenn a hippy.
- zmigliozzi, on 05/19/2008, -0/+12I could fall asleep to music with this in it. Has a nice peaceful vibe to it.
- Andero, on 05/19/2008, -2/+12The sound that this instrument produces is really quite amazing. I'd love to get a group of friends together with one of these, a panpipe, an acoustic guitar, and just jam out in a park in the summer.
- Cglass, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10Yea basically I don't want to check every collaboration site on the internet so I choose digg, for no particular reason , sometimes if I get really bored I may check out the others. If that article wasn't on the front page here before, what does it hurt to post it?
- richpav, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10The Hapi looks like an available and affordable substitute.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW-GZ05htLE - davewashere, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9That would make sense, as people don't usually wear shirts that just have the name of a genre on them, the exception being my "Adult Contemporary Jazz" polo shirt.
- CyberSol, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9play the E-Hang it is pretty fun.

Also, here is a nice link about them...http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/om16250.html - Chordinator, on 05/19/2008, -2/+10I had no idea these things existed... apparently there are just chambers inside that regulate the metal's resonance for a scale of notes depending where you hit it. I imagine they had some sort of directional or room mic situation set up too, as there is acoustic treatment on the walls.
- davewashere, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8That's true. It's actually the egg yolks that do the soundproofing. I encourage everyone to try it for themselves.
- madeingermany, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7It's a steel drum! It's a cow bell! It's both! :)
This video explains some of the features of the Hang Drum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsGqymRcpKQ - lysdexic, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8If you're feeling industrious, you can DIY with an empty propane tank. Here's the instructions and a few vids to hear what the homemade version sounds like.

For the nice price of $1500... - whitty, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8My uncles have a pretty wide collection of these, actually. They both had to personally fly to Switzerland to get them, and they know the guy pretty well. Unfortunately they're virtually impossible to ship since they're so fragile - retuning them is a monster pain and has to be done by the guy himself. I do recall one of them telling me he stopped making them lately (he's an experimental instrument designer, and just moved on from this design, since it takes so much effort to make), but I don't remember exactly if that's true.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7Just listen to the abomination that is St. Anger, some real trash can sounding drums right there.
- CressCrowbits, on 05/19/2008, -3/+9If I might help in the fight to dispel this myth once and for all:
EGG CARTONS ARE USELESS AS SOUNDPROOFING!
They help diffuse reflections a little bit if you want a room to sound more 'neutral', but not much to make a terrible useful difference. They definitely do not soundproof in any measurable way whatsoever. - 4LeggedtriPod, on 05/19/2008, -1/+7Good. I wasn't the only one then.
- nextyoyoma, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. The whole reason for having a website is so that more people can have access to your product. If they didn't want people to buy these things from them, they wouldn't have made a website. And while it's certainly not an enterprise-level website, it's in-depth enough to demonstrate that they actually want people to use it. If they don't want people to contact them, they should say so.
- knuvue, on 05/19/2008, -2/+7Join the club aecorn. I submitted this 71 days ago http://digg.com/music/Hang_Drum_Solo nobody seemed to think it was very cool then I guess ;)
- chinaman1212, on 05/19/2008, -2/+7I Finlay found the ***** that stole the lid from my BBQ pit!!!
- Dokument, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5Only problem is that they are expensive. i want one though, sound just like a steel drum
- simulastral, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4huh? and who the hell is mrbabyman .. he reposted something i posted and suddenly it's on front page! i guess it pays to have friends.

- poopbawls, on 05/19/2008, -17/+21I love how he's playing this mellow Hang Drum, and still wearing a shirt with the words "METAL MUSIC" on it.
Kudos to you my friend, for mixing the two things together. - jjef, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4wow, impressive! i want to hang out with this guy!
- Arcainne, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4. . . Amazing. He should play at TED.
- blahtastic, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Yeah, and if the quality is the same you might as well tap on some aluminum bowls.
- etx313, on 05/19/2008, -1/+4Drums ARE beautiful friend.
- mu0p, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3AHH ZE EGG CARTONZ, ZE DO NASSSTHING!!
- Andero, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3That's right Key2gb. We'd roll one up and just play for people in the park as they walk by.
- atrainmuse, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Awesome instrument. Handmade in Switzerland, and as far as I know, you have to go to Switzerland yourself to get it. Also, quite expensive, in the $5k range or more.
- BigAl26, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Love the sound of those things, they kinda sound like steel drums but softer.
- TheMidnight, on 05/19/2008, -1/+4Did anyone else think Jabba the Hut when they saw the title?
- woofers07, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3That was not even close to what I was expecting when I saw "Drum Solo" that was some impressive stuff.
- CrispinUK, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3There's a collection of Hang Drum music for download on the pirate bay ... http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3877130/Hang_Drum
- Regulator980, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3This instrument was on digg almost a full year ago (in 5 days) and was pretty awesome. Here's the video that made front page.
