- Neticule, on 05/19/2008, -1/+72Thats pretty cool stuff, Ive never seen one of these instruments, not sure if I have even ever heard one. I really like the sound he has going about halfway in, beautiful!
- Dokument, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5Only problem is that they are expensive. i want one though, sound just like a steel drum
- Cowtastic, on 05/19/2008, -4/+3Yeah this sounds a lot more percussive and in my opinion cooler than a steel drum. I was in my high school's steel drum band (w00t just graduated) and a single lead pan can cost about $900.
- iSamurai, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2BTW it is actually pronounced "hung" and yes they are Swiss. A percussion band I was in had two of these (one of them got stolen while in a car!) and had a song centered around them. Anyway, they are amazingly versatile as you can see in the video.

- JVIikel, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Do you know where it came from? Also, check out that ghetto soundproofing! That's actually really clever

- kevinrose, on 05/19/2008, -6/+138I've been searching all over, anyone know how I can buy one of these?

Unfortunatly it looks like you would probably have to go to Switzerland (you could take diggnation and make it a bussiness trip!!! - expatcatalyst, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Here is a thread that seems to have all the right clues. A little long, but might be useful. http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2004/05/31/h ...
Also, here is a nice link about them...http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/om16250.html - Rodalli, on 05/19/2008, -2/+4I want one too, even though this is the first time I've ever seen or heard it played. I've always wanted to learn an instrument and the hang drum seems to have that simplistic quality to it that would make it easy to experiment with.
Even if I could get to Switzerland, I can't afford a hang. :( - super_spyder, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2I think i read somewhere the people who made them (2 guys by hand) stopped making them, and they go for 7k+ on ebay if they are sold there
- paulmike3, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Recently sold on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/1st-Gen-PANArt-Hang-or-Hang-Dr ...
- Kronos6948, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3I'd love to have a couple of these myself. Look further down in the comments, chkdg8 gives contact info on who makes them. They're well worth the price, since a lot of skill has to go into making them (Tuning's got to be a pain!!).
- richpav, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10The Hapi looks like an available and affordable substitute.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW-GZ05htLE - whitty, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8My uncles have a pretty wide collection of these, actually. They both had to personally fly to Switzerland to get them, and they know the guy pretty well. Unfortunately they're virtually impossible to ship since they're so fragile - retuning them is a monster pain and has to be done by the guy himself. I do recall one of them telling me he stopped making them lately (he's an experimental instrument designer, and just moved on from this design, since it takes so much effort to make), but I don't remember exactly if that's true.
- trpnblies7, on 05/19/2008, -0/+35It's really strange to see a hang article on Digg. I know this instrument really well because up until recently, my uncle was actually the sole seller of hangs in the U.S. Unfortunately, I don't think he's selling them anymore because the two men who made them in Switzerland weren't able to keep up with production or something. He used to get huge shipments of them in all the time, though, and he's quite good at playing them. You're welcome to contact him if you want and see if he's able to get anymore (I'm not sure if he has any left).

The website is pretty cheesy (he's a percussionist, not a designer), but his contact information should be there. - lysdexic, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8If you're feeling industrious, you can DIY with an empty propane tank. Here's the instructions and a few vids to hear what the homemade version sounds like.

For the nice price of $1500...- GotHang, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0FYI, the e-mail address is no longer functional since PANArt took down their web page. Also the price is a bit more as it is set at 1,200 Euros.

- failsoft, on 05/19/2008, -2/+38i like the sound insulation made out of egg cartons
- CressCrowbits, on 05/19/2008, -3/+9If I might help in the fight to dispel this myth once and for all:
EGG CARTONS ARE USELESS AS SOUNDPROOFING!
They help diffuse reflections a little bit if you want a room to sound more 'neutral', but not much to make a terrible useful difference. They definitely do not soundproof in any measurable way whatsoever.- NeiloMac, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2This man speaks the truth. Comment dugg.
- Napalmhaze, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2No No digg him down for spoiling everyones vision on what is or isnt fact.
Seriously tho! How'd he get dugg down for stating the true facts? Egg cartons do nothing! NOTHING! - davewashere, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8That's true. It's actually the egg yolks that do the soundproofing. I encourage everyone to try it for themselves.
- mockupscaledown, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Dugg up. Egg cartons are nearly acoustically transparent.
- mu0p, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3AHH ZE EGG CARTONZ, ZE DO NASSSTHING!!
- leek, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2that makes an awful lot of eggs to eat to cover those walls
- CressCrowbits, on 05/19/2008, -3/+9If I might help in the fight to dispel this myth once and for all:
- Chordinator, on 05/19/2008, -2/+10I had no idea these things existed... apparently there are just chambers inside that regulate the metal's resonance for a scale of notes depending where you hit it. I imagine they had some sort of directional or room mic situation set up too, as there is acoustic treatment on the walls.
- poopbawls, on 05/19/2008, -17/+21I love how he's playing this mellow Hang Drum, and still wearing a shirt with the words "METAL MUSIC" on it.
Kudos to you my friend, for mixing the two things together.- trumpydumpy, on 05/19/2008, -0/+49I think the "METAL MUSIC" shirt he's wearing refers to the metal drums he is playing
- davewashere, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9That would make sense, as people don't usually wear shirts that just have the name of a genre on them, the exception being my "Adult Contemporary Jazz" polo shirt.
- trumpydumpy, on 05/19/2008, -0/+49I think the "METAL MUSIC" shirt he's wearing refers to the metal drums he is playing
- Andero, on 05/19/2008, -2/+11The sound that this instrument produces is really quite amazing. I'd love to get a group of friends together with one of these, a panpipe, an acoustic guitar, and just jam out in a park in the summer.
- saxmaster, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Count me in!
- Key2gb, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3cant for get the joints

- beatleman, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Don't forget the insanity-inducing glass harmonica...

- slightlyoffbeat, on 05/19/2008, -2/+50I watched the movie, dugg this story, and didn't even realize kevin submitted it. Being a drummer/percussionist, this is one of the coolest videos I have seen in a long time. I don't read reddit and am glad I found this on digg.
so basically...STFU- Modestexcuse, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Thank you. Saved me a few characters.
- Cglass, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10Yea basically I don't want to check every collaboration site on the internet so I choose digg, for no particular reason , sometimes if I get really bored I may check out the others. If that article wasn't on the front page here before, what does it hurt to post it?

- ClwnNinja, on 05/19/2008, -8/+3yea this was awesome when i watched it earlier today on reddit.
still good though. majestic sounds. - floridiot2, on 05/19/2008, -4/+3Nice giant waffles on the wall. Are those Belgian?
- nsanidy, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2No those are egg crates to help with noise control/pollution.
- atrainmuse, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Awesome instrument. Handmade in Switzerland, and as far as I know, you have to go to Switzerland yourself to get it. Also, quite expensive, in the $5k range or more.
- black27696, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1According to the multiple articles on google, they're in the $500 range, not $5000.
- GotHang, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0To clarify, their earlier models were priced around 400-600 Euro, but the current price for a new Hang is 1,200 Euro. The second hand market for Hang has gone a bit crazy over the past year and it is true that on ebay the pricing has ranged from $2,000 to sometimes over $5,000.

- YodaJones, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Very cool. Nice playing!
- jaydoj, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2this instrument sounds amazing. Thanks kevin for submitting this, before your submission, I had never heard of this instrument.
- chkdg8, on 05/19/2008, -1/+25They cost about $1500.00 and you have to be put on a waiting list. They are not mass produced but made by 2 men in switzerland.

Its a pretty personal, spiritual thing for them i think.
- nextyoyoma, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. The whole reason for having a website is so that more people can have access to your product. If they didn't want people to buy these things from them, they wouldn't have made a website. And while it's certainly not an enterprise-level website, it's in-depth enough to demonstrate that they actually want people to use it. If they don't want people to contact them, they should say so.
- GotHang, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0Just to be clear PANArt (the Hang Makers) took down their website quite some time ago. Hang-Music.com is the website of a Hang Player and fan in France who set up a forum for Hang Enthusiasts.
In my experience PANArt is less a company and more two artists who make sonic sculptures.

- keithwalsh1972, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Sorry, to give out about this but...........
It appears that he is an independent artist, would it not be better to encourage people to buy his music
instead of posting a direct link to a torrent ??
If it was a major label artist I wouldn't give a *****, but we really should encourage and support the artists not signed to labels.- Mizzike, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Agreed, I just bought his album from Amazon, called Living Room, for only $8.99, DRM-free. It's good enough that I probably would have paid 50% more for it.
- GotHang, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I bought several albums from ManuDelago.com directly. I agree that they've been well worth the price.

- richardhenry, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2It's the unfortunate situation that unless you go on a promotion spree for everything you submit, the chances of it getting Dugg are barely nil. Thousands of articles are submitted every day, and hardly anyone watches the 'upcoming' section anyway.
If you have suggestions for improving the system, then why not suggest them instead of pointing out a needle in a haystack 71 days after it disappeared and especially when someone has already sorted us out with a bigger needle equipped with flashing light and siren.- knuvue, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Thanks, i'm fully aware of how digg works. Look at the first sentence of your post and you will understand why I posted my comment. If some diggers see that I have added sweet content such as this video in the past, perhaps I will make some new friends on digg and get future, quality submissions dugg. Don't get me wrong I'm really glad Kevin posted this...damn cool vid.
