- Gooba, on 12/05/2008, -1/+442I found a video comparing the two songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ofFw9DKu_I - theberlindoctor, on 12/05/2008, -30/+335I'm going to sue everyone who uses the G - C - D chord progression. THAT ***** IS MINE NOW.
- TexasKoz, on 12/05/2008, -20/+279I had no idea that anybody in Cold Play could actually play a Satriani riff?
- novantii, on 12/05/2008, -42/+204Hmm legendary guitar virtuoso VS some yuppie elevatormusic band.
- Humpasaur, on 12/05/2008, -19/+179At first I figured this was *****, but having listened to the two songs, I think Satriani has a case.
- pigsbladder, on 12/05/2008, -5/+165http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMcjXo8ZuqE joe satriani song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbx7DC_n0-A cold play song. - ATL, on 06/20/2009, -4/+120"It's not the same" -Vanilla Ice
- ksgant, on 12/05/2008, -11/+125Having listened to both these songs, I would say Joe Satriani shouldn't have just said "used one of this riffs". They stole the whole song. I mean, it's identical. Same chords and melody AND it's even in the same fricken key.
It's not even a case of "well, it kinda-sorta sounds the same"...it IS the same. All Coldplay did was just put lyrics in where the melody is.
Pretty bad lyrics also, but that's neither here nor there. It's the same song. - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -7/+110No, it isn't. Coldplay is notorious for this sort of thing, and Satriani wasn't the first one to notice. Thom Yorke was.
- dareyoutomove, on 12/05/2008, -25/+126did I miss something? when did it become cool to bash Coldplay - is it because they're popular?
- CoreyTamas, on 12/05/2008, -9/+102That's amazing. Not only the same melody, the same progression... but even the same key.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -49/+135difference is satriani is a good musician, coldplay suck
- aforce369, on 12/05/2008, -3/+88They can't. If you watch the video Gooba posted, you'll notice they got rid of the hard parts of Satriani's riff.
- stonebone4, on 12/05/2008, -4/+84I wish they could settle the duel in a guitar-off...Coldplay would seriously just burst into flames.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -18/+94Coldplay ripped off Kraftwerk too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0rYO1GDyis
Even if they had permission, its obvious how Coldplay goes about writing songs. - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -3/+73And Joe ripped it off from Enanitos Verdes?
Listen to this song by them made back in 2002
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G57CgtX-BsI - dirtypenguin, on 12/05/2008, -4/+72It's the great Digg paradox. Diggers like something until it becomes popular.
- microview2007, on 12/05/2008, -3/+71Dam, it is a rip off but man they do sound great together! How about a remix feat. Satriani?
- whoizthedrizzle, on 12/05/2008, -30/+98i think this is awesome, because i really ***** hate coldplay.
- animainmachina, on 12/05/2008, -10/+73I can't count how many times I've written a riff and then not even 10 minutes later i'll realise it was some other bands riff. Or one of my friends will point that i inadvertently copied a riff from some band I had never known existed. Coincidences do happen. I'm not that big a fan of Coldplay; but it just seems like Satch is grasping at straws. Maybe G3 and all his records just aren't paying the bills....

Satriani is every bit the guitar god that most of these asshats say he is, but this case has no merit. - greatpaimei, on 12/05/2008, -3/+65So... I'm playing guitar earlier, just rockin' out, mindin' my own business, playing the 7 letters and seein what's up. All of a sudden my roommate's like, "YO, Bro, that *****'s stolen." and I was all, "*****, i just made this ***** up." And he said, "Nah son, that sounds just like 'Lay Lady Lay" by Bob Dylan." I knew he must have been *****, because he's not even that big of a fan of Dylan and I love the guy like a god or something. And then I played it again and was like, "Holy ***** man... it is!" Then it donned on me... Bob Dylan played easy-ass riffs. I mean fo-reals dawg... no way this ***** is original. So I went and put the progression into google and sure enough, that progressions like a million songs. So then a lit my hash bowl cuz I was feelin pretti dipressed. Finally it occurred to me... it's not the progression that makes the song, not the lyrics; it's the man. Bob Dylan is the man.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -6/+64wanna know how I know Satriani is gay?
He must have listened to coldplay. - deaftly, on 12/05/2008, -13/+66That fruit of the loom band is better then coldplay
- drhouse, on 12/05/2008, -12/+65I don't have a musical ear but they sound alike to me ..
Not really surprising, so much of today's 'music' is unoriginal - ksgant, on 12/05/2008, -5/+56I know your kidding, but in case someone out there doesn't already know: chord progressions can't be copy-written. Else the estate of Robert Johnson is owed probably billions from the countless people that have used the 12-bar blues progression over the past 70 years...
But this case with Satriani and Coldplay isn't about the chord progression, they stole the progression AND the melody...which is what makes a song unique. Go and listen to them both. All Coldplay did was put in lame lyrics and lamer singing where Satriani's guitar part was. - djw319, on 12/05/2008, -0/+40You rebel.
- theberlindoctor, on 12/05/2008, -2/+39I dont know how many times i've been playing guitar and humming what i thought was something totally original only to have someone go "that sounds just like that smashing pumpkins riff" and then i usually scream "*****" and start over.
But seriously, GCD is mine now. - kowaleski, on 12/05/2008, -1/+38Even Digg itself!
- bigfatphony19, on 12/05/2008, -3/+38I'll bet Radiohead is laughing their asses off right now.
- whoizthedrizzle, on 12/05/2008, -2/+36actually he probably makes them up in his private studio in his big ass mansion, while you sit on digg in your mom's trailer
- CoreyTamas, on 12/05/2008, -4/+37Saying that demonstrates one thing clearly: You don't know Satriani.
- starslinger72, on 12/05/2008, -1/+33***** digg!
- ATLien74, on 12/05/2008, -5/+36Public Enemy's entire tracks are made from samples.
- pixelate, on 12/05/2008, -3/+33Not liking a band's music is one thing, but why the hate? Do they force you to buy their music? If you hear them all the time on the radio, aren't you listening to the wrong stations?
There are lots of musical acts that actively sell themselves out and engage in all sorts of douchebaggery. So Coldplay has a bit of a jesus complex perhaps (make trade fair? ***** you!), but they write inoffensive pop music that isn't completely musically bankrupt. That's actually kind of rare on the Top 40 circuit, which is an unavoidable construct of our culture.
This article deals with an issue that is pretty compelling for those of us who have an interest in how songs are composed and constructed and, yes, sold. Deciding that Coldplay is legally at fault because you don't like their music is irrational.
(Funny, I don't hear anyone complaining about how like 50% of needledrop library compositions in the past few years have been a complete ripoff of Clocks.) - Shirleycakes, on 12/05/2008, -15/+45...was it ever NOT cool to bash Coldplay? All this melody-thieving talk aside, they've always been considered a "pop-friendly" Radiohead knockoff.
- jynweythek, on 12/05/2008, -12/+41not saying I like what coldplay is doing here but honestly, it's absurd to copyright a "riff." all music is derived from its various predecessors in some way.
- steakneggs, on 12/05/2008, -7/+35No offense to Satriani fans, but this particular Satriani tune sounds like something I would hear in an elevator or at the dentist.
And no, I am not a Coldplay fan. - akchrs, on 12/05/2008, -12/+40That's a great comparison. And it's clearly ripped off.
- bpoteat, on 12/05/2008, -3/+29Someone (Creaky Boards) already claimed that Coldplay ripped this exact same song off from them. So, shouldn't satriani be suing that band too? Or maybe that band did it first and can sue Satritani? THAT would be a turn.
- habbofresh, on 12/05/2008, -18/+44Know How I Know You're Gay? 'Cause You Like Coldplay
- skyshock1, on 12/05/2008, -7/+33Oh come on, that chord progression isn't exactly that uncommon through music, and the melody over top is just the obvious implied melody from those chords. I'm sure Joe Satriani wasn't the first to play those chords in that order either. As much of an amazing guitarist as Satch is, his chord progressions are nothing totally foreign. In fact quite the opposite, he writes very simple chord progressions that he can just solo for days over.
If anything I think Oasis should be suing Green Day for Boulevard of Broken Dreams. But there are a bazillion songs out there that all sound the same and even use the same chord progressions, that's just the nature of making pop music that involves chord progressions people are accustomed to. - cromulent742, on 12/05/2008, -5/+30I always knew there must be a tangible reason why i hated coldplay.
- LoadStar, on 12/05/2008, -4/+29Different key, actually. The Satriani song was pitch-shifted in this video to make the similarity a little easier to tell. Pretty similar melody and progression though, you're right.
- twiztidsinz, on 12/05/2008, -2/+27I bet that Satriani bought his mom a house with a basement bigger than your moms house.
- diggtochina, on 12/05/2008, -35/+59just more proof coldplay sucks ass
- captainbethany, on 12/05/2008, -1/+25See: Kanye West.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+23There's an extra note! :)
- ekSD, on 12/05/2008, -8/+30Err, that's because Coldplay's main influence was Radiohead. And they readily admit that.
And if you listened to the two bands at all, you'd know that Radiohead is COMPLETELY different in its sound.
Listen to A Rush of Blood to the Head, and then go and listen to OK Computer.
Try again. - xLSDx, on 12/05/2008, -2/+24it's just kids' way of showing how cool they are
