- wargod18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Title is a little misleading I thought it was a website that had remixes of songs, still dugg though its pretty cool.
- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What the hell? This sounds like some advertisement in Digg form...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9First, how many times do we have to say it: LINK TO THE SITE, NOT SOME ***** GO-BETWEEN.
Second: THERE IS NO MENTION OF MASHUPS on that page. So WTF are you talking about?
Buried as inaccurate. - quinnmct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah, works great. I got from Marilyn Manson to Jack Johnson in one click, yah cuz theyre so similiar
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5is it just me, or is musicmesh's logo practically identical to torrentspy's?
- MadNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5can someone please define "mashup" in this context?
I thought that was like two songs fused?
Anyone?... - RedZone09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4www.imeem.com has lots of good mashups too.
- pjpete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What does this have ANYTHING to do with mash-ups. It looks like a another 'related music' suggestion thing.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it says at the bottom that it uses audioscrobbler's metadata. what they've done is created a mashup based off of the audioscrobbler API, and adding to it youtube videos, wikipedia bio/album info, and amazon reviews (and i think album covers). it's kind of cool and has a unique interface, but i think last.fm is much more useful as it has all the album covers, artist infos, streamable tracks, recommendations, and other useful features for music lovers as well as bands and record labels. last.fm's artist profiles can be either, edited by the community like wikipedia, or the label/artist themselves can write a bio for each band. however, it might be a good idea for last.fm to incorporate music videos into their site though.
what i like about last.fm is that their recommendation system allows you to tweak the algorithm to display more mainstream or more obscure artists, and they have really cool services for labels (particularly, independent labels), such as ads/track plays/recommendations which are targeted at fans of similar artists that you specify. they also provide useful charts and graphs of listening data and track plays in the special interface for labels and artists. these graphs are really useful for tracking the performance and popularity of an artist, whereas before indie labels had to rely solely soundscan numbers. this is especially helpful for monitoring the effectiveness of an advertising campaign and allows one to make adjustments to the advertising strategy and immediately see the results.
i think a really cool mashup would be an application that combines audioscrobbler metadata with soundscan numbers to track the popularity and sales performance of an artist at the same time. something using this combined data to also track listening trends and show, or even predict, shifts in these trends would be awesome. - randall814, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3iMesh?
- Scuba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I noticed that this is much faster than the other Similar Music finders I've come across. Music Match ( http://www.dimvision.com/musicmap/ ) for instance has quite a bit of load time associated, although seems to gain more accurate results.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lifehacker is a pretty well known group blog that a lot of people read. if that's where the submitter found out about MusicMesh, why not link to that post to give them a little credit for providing useful updates and helping others find out about cool productivity software? it's not like lifehacker rips off people's content or just serves up blog spam. their updates are actually pretty helpful for a lot of people.
and the service in question is certainly a mashup. it clearly states at the bottom that they use metadata collected from audioscrobbler, and they've taken this metadata and combined it with data from youtube, amazon, and wikipedia to provide a new and unique web application. this is a perfect example of what a mashup is. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@willynilly:
it appears that you don't understand what a mashup is, so let me help you out:
"A mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience." -- wikipedia
this web app uses metadata from audioscrobbler to find similar artists and content, grabs album reviews from amazon, videos from youtube, and searches wikipedia for band bios and album information. how is that not a mashup?
@RedZone09, that's a cool site. thanks for sharing. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what context are you used to? cuz i thought this fit the definition of a mashup perfectly. also, i'm an avid user of last.fm but i've never heard of finetune--what is it exactly?
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's cuz they use metadata from audioscrobbler. check out last.fm --they're another site/service which is based on audioscrobbler. i think last.fm owns the audioscrobbler project, but they've released the data under a creative commons license. last.fm is by far the best music exploration/discovery site i know of.
- hkrabye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very poor support for independent music. And also, it doesn't look like the info is the latest update (one of the reason why it's fast - it's getting data from it's own database instead of directly from the sources?)
- proghead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1umm...how is this not spam?
- earthling3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is somewhat dumb on the associations.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cuz it's not trying to sell you anything. lifehacker is a tech blog of sorts which usually showcases productivity software or useful websites. they're not making any money off of you going to music mesh and aren't affiliated with them. most tech news is going to be describing a new tech product or service. a lot of us like to stay up to date with new services and applications coming out so we can use them or just to check out new ideas and learn from other developers/innovators and gain inspiration from them.
- allholy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I use that one too... but it didn't have 30 seconds to mars on it vs. musicmesh which did. Musicplasma/liveplasma has lots more results which I like.
- phore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is not news, this is more like an advertisement, buried as spam
- kury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1reminds me of this site that has been around for years...
http://musicplasma.com/ - ssmith2k3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Allmusic seems a lot more helpful for browsing (sub)genres.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I buried this because I hate advertisements.

Usually they are at least portrayed as something else, this one isn't even ashamed of what it is... - lilSears, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I kinda like it. I looked up a small band called Caspian (kinda indie, ambient, chill style music) out of boston and found their brand new album with videos of their new concerts already. I'm kinda impressed to be honest.
- vobbsik, on 11/13/2007, -0/+0good old site.
- c0re1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems like it's a lot like audioscrobbler.
- ixeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0we already have
last.fm, allmusic.com, pandora.com, liveplasma.com
this site doesn't add much..
and is NOT helping to create mash-ups
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_%28music%29 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0albumbase.org pwns this
- EvilCowSan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm pretty sure the blog author had no clue what they were talking about. A mashup is, like you said, a mix of songs.
- aknatom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Great stuff.... another great mashup example !!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why "too"? This one doesn't have any.
- jaymulder, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5lifehacker is now blogspam?
