- enantiodromia, on 04/14/2009, -1/+9hey someone finally invented something everyone who has ever played guitar in the last 20 years already thought of!
- stevenbrown, on 04/14/2009, -1/+5I only need to know 4 chords to play wonderwall
- smacksaw, on 04/14/2009, -0/+3It's like turning Watchmen into a movie. You need to wait for the technology to do it justice.
I mean, it took a long time to develop red lights AND notation software! To combine the two? Geez. - ihate2regist, on 04/14/2009, -0/+3i had this idea
- vrikis, on 04/14/2009, -2/+5i hate front page stories with no comments...
- designet, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2these things have been around for what....10 years?
i remember seeing adverts for these in guitar magazines when i was learning, and i've been playing for about 16 years now. - subxero37, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2Kirk's solos in Death Magnetic are very well done, but lack memorability -- in older Metallica songs, I can hum the whole solo. In songs from Death Magnetic, I get lost easily, mainly because of the near over-use of the wah pedal.
Don't get me wrong, Death Magnetic is a great album (and I'm sure I'll get pelted for this one, but Metallica's my all-time favorite band), but really, when I think "innovative and memorable new solos" I think more along the lines of Dave Mustaine. - ewsherm, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2haha so true. i didnt realize everyone else had that idea too.
- scumblz, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2I had an idea similar to this, but I decided I didn't have the electrical know how to put together such a device. I decided to hire Eddie Van Halen. I tied strings to my fingers and the other ends were tied to puppeteer's wooden crosses. Eddie went with me everywhere dancing my fingers across spiraled steel by handling the crosses with a master's touch.
- fretslide, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2Agreed on "a new round of bastardized covers to make more talentless ***** famous." part but solos are not dead. The thing is a music video with long solos are edited out on airtime . The whole 5 minute solo are not appreciated anymore.
Those days are gone when songs like November rain were aired for whole 12 minutes.
Earlier music was about talent mostly now its about who is famous out there? . Who can be marketed more? examples Paris Hilton , Jonas brother , Ashley simpson etc. - mattb5, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2I think they're referencing this: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1904510
- Andrwmorph, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2Sucks being old, doesn't it?
- Decimit, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2...what??!!
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2I'm guessing the goal is to place your fingers where the lights are? The bad part of that is you will also develop an extremely bad habit of looking at the fret board while playing.
- sewagemaster, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2You should all check out the Lick Library DVDs (www.licklibrary.com)
They've got these "Quick licks" DVD which are great, but they've also got plenty of other DVDs available too that goes over covers note by note. The ones on theory are technique are awesome as well. They post youtube videos samples/explaining their new releases so it gives you a good feel of what their DVDs are like.
Ones I liked:
Quick Licks - Satriani.
Quick Licks - Slash
Advanced Rock Guitar with Danny Gill (Danny Gill's a really great teacher btw)
Quick Licks - Jimi Hendrix
Soloing with Modes - w/ Danny Gill
Pentatonic Concepts (I haven't gone through this one yet but seems like it's on an interesting approach of pentatonics in a fusion sort of way)
Other DVDs that I found useful:
Frank Gambale - Modes no more mystery (eye opening DVD that gives a great perspective on harmonizing and writing in all modes)
John Petrucci - Rock Discipline
Paul Gilbert - Intense Rock I and II (he's got other great DVDs too)
Frank Gambale - Chop Builder
Scott Henderson - Melodic Phrasing - smacksaw, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2Four chords and a bottomless pit of despair and self-loathing.
- RonaldSays, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1As with any instrument technique is one thing. You can learn a lot from listening, watching and a good teacher can be very inspirational and keep you focused. I think a teacher is definitely worth every penny if you can afford it and have the time. But most important is you need to play and practice a lot. Not sure if this fretlight guitar is so much better than a couple of good DVDs and books.
- mattb5, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I remember seeing these advertised in guitar magazines back when I first started to learn to play in the mid- to late-80's. Why is this on the front page of Digg today? I can't believe they're still around. Seemed like a stupid idea back then.
- hairtimwarrior, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1Lick Library is a great way to learn but it's expensive
- vassoom, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1As the author states, once they upgrade the hardware to incorporate feedback from the guitar to the computer (s/he's playing this chord = CORRECT, playing this chord = WRONG!), and upgrade the software to make it an interactive game, this will be awesome. I'd be ALL OVER a Rock Band type game using a specialized (but real) guitar as the controller to learn to play.
Until then...ehhh, not so much. - qwertydvorak, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1Sometimes i hate front page comments.
- pagno, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1I will agree, the days of 5min solos are over, as far as radio hits go. That in itself is a sign of rock dying. Not to mention, the only bands that have that level of skill are ***** like Avenged Sevenfold. Pop metal. Thats.. an ideological atom bomb.
- Ibanez0, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1John Petrucci - Rock Discipline
Best DVD ever! - fretslide, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1No it doesn't :)
- verynegative, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1It bothers me that i dont like that guitar.
- pagno, on 04/14/2009, -1/+2We need a respark in guitar music, particularly soloists. Solos are dead, unless youre ***** Kirk Hammet or in a metal band. Chances are, this will only help spawn a new round of bastardized covers to make more talentless ***** famous.
- FastZ, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1Hooray!
- verynegative, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1I agree with the ears part, but if you dont know what cool scales to play when using x,y and z chords it can be handy.
I've been playing by for about 12 years, And i always seem to improvise in pentatonic minor or a couple more scales. It would be nice to leran other scales for a change. - Larssonk22, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1another reason to not move away from your computer monitor
- ihate2regist, on 04/14/2009, -2/+2you mean "you're doing it wrong"?
i play bass - fretslide, on 04/14/2009, -1/+1Sometimes i hate front page stories
- NightfireMetal, on 04/14/2009, -0/+0This really sounds like a waste of money to me. I have been playing for more than half of my life, and this seems like more of a crutch than anything else. When it comes down to it, practice is key. Grab yourself some lesson books, notably the Guitar Grimoire, and possibly Guitar Pro. I took 6 years of lessons, but the real gain has been 4-6 hours a day of practice for the last 6 years. Once you get a basic grasp on how theory works, everything falls together, and everything you want to do can easily be figured out. This rage of Guitar Hero/ Rockband is really a scourge to actual serious musicians. This market is already chock full of talentless and uninspired "musicians". The bottom line is that this will just put more Smoke on the Water intro players out there, and possibly some more terrible punk. All this will do it help you stumble along, and not actually teach you why you are playing what you are playing, and why you should apply it when you do. Take that 500 dollars, get a decent guitar, and start practicing your ass off.
- OMnicient, on 04/14/2009, -0/+0So someone who can't afford or get to lessons is going to get this crap?
I suppose there aren't any free guitar lessons anywhere online, like youtube?
I wouldn't take that piece of crap for free. - tubaros, on 04/14/2009, -1/+1Me too
- reverant, on 04/14/2009, -1/+1Soon I hope

if you want to learn guitar best way is to buy A GUITAR first and then start practicing it.there are plenty of good content available on the net in forms of text and video lessons . Relying on software is not going to make u learn better . it all depends upon the number of hours you spend on actual guitar, covering the basics , learning the core etc.
However there are few good softwares out there that can be helpful like
1. Digital guitar tuner- Lets face it when you are starting out tuning is a bitch and this software has midi for most of the tuning patterns like drop d drop b , major minor etc...
2. Guitar pro (for learning songs and analyzing the tabs) . I feel that this was the major product that revolutionized the guitar learning experience of every player.
My advice to everyone is don't stick to a particular genre . Make sure u can jam with anyone in any genre or style of playing . Start out with softwares or teacher or whatever but your end goal should be to play by ear .
PS: "ALWAYS PRACTICE ON TUNED GUITAR" AND ALTERNATE PICKING
On a side note i can play guitar very well but I suck at guitar hero . Don't know why
- smacksaw, on 04/14/2009, -2/+1Kirk Hammet always solos while I'm ***** him. Sometimes I wonder why he needs me ***** him at all.
Maybe I should join a metal band and quit wasting my time ***** Kirk Hammet. - malignatius, on 04/14/2009, -3/+1Then you're not playing it correctly.
- kjaonline, on 04/14/2009, -3/+1bad idea.. Guitars should be played by ears and that should be how everyone should learn the guitar.. Well, you get what I mean

What is Digg?
