- dubjah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+80R.I.P. Frank. Your mind, and your music, are sorely missed.
- ZacTurney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+42For any trivia buffs out there: Frank Zappa has the only album labeled with Parental Advisory that contains no lyrics. During the music censorship trials, he, Dee Snyder, and John Denver stood up to Tipper Gore and various other heads of the government control think tank. As revenge for him standing out again him, he was aware they were going to try to screw him over, so he pulled his regular album and released a jazz one next. They labeled it to get back at him without ever listening to it and he got the last laugh. Gotta love an iconoclast.
- seanherman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38"don't get any of the wet stuff on ya." Fine advice from the finest of men.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Most of the music today isn't worth paying for.
- jtingley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32He defiantly hit the nail on the head. American Music these days seems to all be very much cookie cutter designed for mass consumption. And it sucks.
But fear not for there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The music industry as we all know it today is on the brink of utter destruction. It will be interesting to see what fills the Void.
I think that the future of music is independent artists promoting their own art via the Internet becoming the main source of music consumption the world over.
Once again there will be truly new and groundbreaking music, the cream will rise to the top, and all will be well again.
On the other hand the RIAA might just sue us all into eternal destitute and continue to force manufactured ***** music down our throats for the next 1000 years.
Who knows. - EvilDr.X, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Fine advice, sure, but why was "wet stuff" bleeped out? And "masturbation"?
- philiaC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Frank was a genius, and one of the greatest composers to ever live. Dweezil is doing a great job with his Zappa Plays Zappa work.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Miss him, miss him, miss him.
- coloneltcb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19good vid, but that was lame (and somewhat ironic) that they bleeped the word "masturbation" when engaging him in a conversation about censorship.
- chiefbandit2200, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Despite what people say about music "these days" sucking, i think that they're are a lot of good bands, and a lot of good labels these days - you just have to go to the smaller independent labels instead of the stuff they play on mtv... Plus the internet makes it a lot easier for good people and bands to actually get heard, and gain popularity.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14masturbating is a dirty word?
- MickBordet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Video is over 20 years old, but if anything more valid today than it was then (true about a LOT of Frank's material).
FZ woulda loved the internet, though - he had some great ideas about digital on-line distribution back in the 80's that are pretty close to what iTunes is now. - mtrip, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Well it's the kids who buy the music that fills the top ten list, which determines which songs get played to death on the radio and fill our culture with their garbage taste in music (I'm looking at you 'This is why I'm hot' guy). So it's paying customers with horrible taste in music that destroy the industry.
- j0keR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I seem to recall a majority of music being *****, even pre-Napster.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I'm sorry what are you saying, my digg filter blotted our your evil words?
- Nateon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Why does it hurt when I pee?
- oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Done.
BTW: Thanks for giving everyone an inside look at your distorted mind by labeling anyone that uses p2p or diggs you down a criminal. - oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Frank Zappa is a god. Too bad I didn't know much of him until I watched a video where he was arguing against the PMRC and owned them.
Rest in peace my friend. - dhVyse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Zappa for president.
- cam2009, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If anyone hasn't seen his interview on Crossfire, it's great. Even though it'd be great to hear what he had to say about today, most of what he has to say is still very relevant. Genius music, genius ideas, and definitely been a big help when I need to find a last minute quote for an essay. Here's the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HljzEXJvj8 - Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You're clueless.
This video was recorded BEFORE the advent of P2P technology. This was probably the early 90's at the latest. Zappa's been dead for years. He's absolutely right on what's wrong with music today. - HarryManback, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5MTV plays music?? When did this start happening?
- bffoley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Whaaaaaaat
- oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Because it was recorded in the US where freedom to not hear dirty words out weights freedom of speech. Gotta love the hypocrisy.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4duff down for being the most stupid zappa-related comment in the entire human history of comments.
- themulf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Funny, im at work listening to him right now. Dinah-mo-hum!
- mdpolaris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Beware of the Central Scrutinizer...
- Chicken2nite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4and smoking weed makes you a terrorist?
- Skanadian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's a shame I submitted this a long time ago. Dugg regardless since Zappa is the man.
- dharmon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And you know because you were there and he wasn't, right?
- DustinR, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Damn hippies.
- UsedToVacation, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"Where the germs can get you..."
American pop music has sucked since the mid 70's when disco came around.
There are so many great original indie bands out right now though, that I don't think music quality is declining at all.
Just the general public becoming *****. I mean, look who we elected the past two terms. You expect them to have good taste in art and culture too? - spukeesan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5*****, and I'm actually surprised you got dugg up for your ignorance. Zappa's words were bleeped because the producers of the video had the freedom to choose to bleep them. Had they not, then obviously the the film wouldn't have been aired on syndicated television, but it certainly wouldn't have been an issue legally. If you don't want to be a sheep then stop spouting rhetoric and get your facts straight.
- feshmania, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3it's the ever-declining attention span of our generation that's killing music. i, like i'm sure many people on here, like a wide variety of music, but the pop music industry, which is what's going to be in your face, is always looking for the next thing...soon all the good indie music (whether it be rock, rap, etc.) is going to be gobbled up and destroyed as well. frank zappa, the genius he is, nails this on the head...it's because some stuffy former hip person sees a paydate in a genre and then squeezes it until its drained of anything of any artistic worth.
- BlackMagic2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There are a lot of good record labels out there, you just have to look for them. Easier than looking for good indie bands, a lot of which is crap.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only modern music I listen to is indie simply because you won't see any creativity/talent in albums put out by big record companies now because they'd rather dump ***** on us like "LIL JOHN AN DA EAS SIDE BOYZ!!!" so they can rip off the thousands of dumb asses who actually buy that *****.
- mrx23, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Yes, Frank is the MAN.
@ bearcliner: Give us the music that's worth paying for. Not this mass produced garbage your industry is actively stuffing our throats with.
The present system of music distribution is a scam. They let you listen to a 30 second clip, and to hear more you are pretty much have to either buy that track, or download it off p2p. Its a scam in my mind. Imagine going to department store, and you are only allowed to see 10% of the item you are buying. You like those shoes, but you are not allowed to try more than 10 percent each shoe. You have to pay full cost before you can even try them on in full. And if you dont like them, too bad - they are not returnable. I am sorry, but its a scam.
- sikosmurf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I just went to see the baltimore show a few weeks ago. It was pretty awesome. The mayor of baltimore sent someone from their office out and officially declared it "Frank Zappa Day" in honor of his contributions to music and first amendment rights. Dweezil got all choked up.
- tunapez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Gone but not forgotten.
I digg listening to Frank on Friday, every week at 12:06 EST on WNCW.org. Great station, diverse playlists and, best of all, an awesome tribute to keeping Frank's message alive. - EnterDaMatrix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Frank Zappa's voice in today's world might have changed everything.
- sonaboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4he's a smart guy, but that's really not how it went down.
in fact, the most successful business models are teams of cigar chomping pragmatists who keep hold of the purse strings while the hippies say, "what the hell is this? can we put it out?"
music got "ruined" in the 60s because guys started figuring out that they could make money at it, and saturated the market. It's never been the same since. But it all goes in cycles, much like any industry. - bloqmon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Perhaps they stopped paying because the music began to suck? Music was once about artistic expression and amazing talent, but today its about who can sell the most merchandise/albums. There are talented musicians out there, but none as prolific as those past.
- Xool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wonderful. But what culture do we live in, where we have to bleep out the word "masturbation"? Surprised "sex" got through the filter.
- quisph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Judging from the length of his hair, I'd say this was around 1988.
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For those particular words that is true, but there are words that do get you into legal trouble when aired.
- cthulhu666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2anything from frank zappa gets a digg from me - one of the great musical geniuses of the 20th century
- ferrofluid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That is very funny.
- llllDrGONZOllll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks to Frank my children will know the difference between tastelessness and unpopularity. My efforts to become the Dental Floss Tycoon have wained, but the weirdness that they spawned from still are rooted deep in my soul. Thank you Frank.... to hear your voice, even in playback gives hope to those of us who still fly your freak flag." I can't wait till my fro is full grown.. i'll just throw away my do rag at home... i take a drive to Beverly Hill just before dawn and knock all The jockeys off the rich people's lawn...and before they get up i'll be gone"
- kd1s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed, Zappa had his finger on the pulse of America for the longest time. He saw through the ***** very well.
- SaiaRiddle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm sad to say I don't know a lot about Zappa, but the man was obviously very intelligent. Anyone who wants to censor art or control what people hear or see just baffles me completely.
