- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+134The nerve of that Dave Grohl. He ought to be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a miner...
Sorry. Couldn't resist that one. - cmyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43They loaded the iPod with uplifting Foo hits such as:
Enough Space
D.O.A
Low
No Way Back
Hell
Free Me
Break out
Over and Out
and, of course, Everlong.
In all seriousness tho... Dave rocks. - w33tDotCom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41I think what Dave's doing is ok. After all, those guys are diggers.
- mkoby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38I think it's cool when people like Grohl do things like this.
- TriZz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Dave Grohl is a cool guy. He's from my area, and I bumped into him at a local diner once. Cool guy, really nice, signed an autograph for me and my friends with his Mom waiting in the car.
...kudos to Dave for this. That's really awesome of him. - robbclark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Probably the most talented man in modern rock, and down to earth as well i see.
- ParanoidSardine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Dave's the best personality in the music industry. He's continually been a stand-up guy and he's just funny as hell.
- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16yay for real people in a typically fake industry
- creighton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16There goes my hero
--he's ordinary
Support artists like this. - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Wow 15 days trapped below with a IPOD? Whoa... They must of have had some extra special edition IPOD w/ extra battery life to last 15 days... I can't even get mine to last 1 day on a full charge...
- aplusbi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I believe shortly after they were trapped rescuers were able to channel a small hole to their location through which they were able to pass food, water, air and among other things, the iPod in question. They probably had it sent back and forth a few times for recharging.
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Before my wife and I met, she was in Australia (funny coincidence) and was at the Hyatt in Sydney hanging out at the pool. She saw a Helicopter land off in the distance, and four guys got off and came straight to the pool. She was a nanny at the time and these four guys jumped straight in and started screwing around and playing with the kids she was watching flipping them in the air and such having a blast. He employers gave her the afternoon off and she ended up sitting at the pool bar (one of those cool ones where you're sitting in the water) drinking with these guys.
My wife asked what they were doing there, and he introduced himself as Dave Grohl, along with the rest of his bandmates in the group Foo Fighters. She had no clue who they were, but hung out all afternoon into the night talking and drinking and having fun. From her account, he is a really down to earth guy, very funny, and a blast to have some drinks with. I guess the drummer, Taylor Hawkins, was a riot as well. When she told me that story, I was so jealous.
Even if one of the miners isn't into their music, I'm sure he'll treat them to a great evening, and that is very cool of him to do so. - fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Somoene always has to turn a positive into a negative.
- wolvyne, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12That's awesome. Nice to see celebs being charitable instead of just trying to figure new ways to spend money on themselves. Go Dave!
- lmushl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'm glad the cynics have such openmindedness.
- benlundquist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"I'm not just having one beer with those dudes: we're going for it," Grohl said.
- jonezy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6+1 dave grohl
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good; different. Not better. For those curious, Probot is a metal album in which he did 99% of the instrumentation (drums, base, guitar) by himself. He had his favorite metal vocalists sing over the tracks.
- Blackfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dave is my kind of Rockstar...
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Maybe if they donated money to some hospital or someone who really could use help."
Screw cancer kids, we need more drunk miners! - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess there was a nine centimeter diameter pipe that they used to communicate to/from the trapped miners. They used this pipe to send goods (food, clothes, ipods) to them.
- Radionesiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not even a huge Foo Fighters fan, but this is heartwarming. Dave Grohl is class through and through. Good for him, and good for the two miners! Cheers all around. Great story.
- fiddelm3742, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about a video of him talking about him being in Nirvana (while being completely smashed)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7578263609026767261&q=Dave+Grohl+Drunk - rparle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3-digg for not bothering to read the rest of the comments, most of which are about what a genuinely nice guy Grohl is.
- afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, this is bound to get him at least some publicity. So what? When a celebrity of any status does something like this, they deserve it. As was said, he is a great guy, and is most likely doing this because he believes its the right thing to do.
As a side note, one of my favorite stories about musicians doing the right thing is when the Dropkick Murphys recorded and played a special version of Fields of Athenry at the funeral of Marine Corps Sgt. Andrew Farrar. Farrar had requested in a letter home that if anything were to happen to him, to play the Dropkick Murphys' song at his funeral. The short version of the story can be read about here. http://www.dropkickmurphys.com/discography/releases/farrarsingle.html It really wasn't too widely publicized, probably because they're not too well known, even though they're one of the biggest punk acts of this generation. Its always good to know when people in the power to do the right thing, do so. - kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Somoene always has to turn a positive into a negative."
All I can think of is how badly that poor ipod must have been scratched after a few hours in a coal mine!! ::SOB::
In all honesty stories like this is why I have so much faith that my fellow man is capable of so much good. - Flappy3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only one of the miners is a Foo Fighters fan. Todd Russell prefers Country & Western.
When they were first trapped, they found that they had very few common interests. The only song they both knew the words to, and could sing together was The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. - socbret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Maybe not the *most* talented, but without a doubt one of the nicest guys.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2or MP3 sugar...
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ahaha, that would've been bad if the iPods were defective in that the only song they'd play is D.O.A.
- Flappy3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaconsfield_mine_collapse
- newbietheatre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+221 hours old and no Aussie has hit this up yet?
Oi! Oi! Oi! - Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yeah, seems like a cd player and a pack of AAs would have been a better deal
- B111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If anyone's ever heard that mp3 of grohl rambling on and saying how he used to be in Nirvana, then they know he's a fun guy to drink with.
- Xinex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He seems like a really cool guy. He's been on the Liam Lynch podcast a few times.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I saw the Foo fighters play with Eagles of Death metal opening for them.. It was an awesome show...
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, I'm a HUGE Grohl/Foo fan. When did they implement automatic personalization in Digg?
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That was a joke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Aussie Aussie Aussie!!
- furto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol i surprised the ipod even lasted 15 days, especially down a mine
- animalgod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Maybe and iPod...and like 200 of those USB charger things.
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2He's an authentically nice man for sure. As a side note, I'm in one of his music videos, Times Like These. : )
- RawkBob, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0To be honest, he really doesn't need the publicity, most people who have a vague knowledge of music already know who is and if they like him they'll already have bought the albums... as a lot of the comments have said, he seems like a genuine guy and not someone who's only doing this to put a couple of $'s in his pocket.
- lfrazee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is why Dave Grohl is still one of the coolest guys in Rock!
- thumbsucker1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dave Grohl is my hero, and he is not ordinary :)
- lennon2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Alright, fine. I guess I'll be the one to pitch in with the cliche. ROCK ON.
- EquinnoxX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4He's only buying them a drink because they'll be broke after the RIAA gets wind of this and sues them.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They probably downloaded the Foo Fighters from Oink.
- tekNico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0> they requested an iPod with Foo Fighters songs on it to help drown out
> the sound of drilling as rescuers attempted a slow rescue.
Yeah, right, drown out the noise with even more sound (this is not about the music, mind you, never heard Foo Fighters stuff, I only know about the collaboration with Norah Jones).
I hope they at least got some sound-insulating earplugs, as the Sony Nude EX, or the Shure ones. Surely they didn't get some fancy Etymotics. :-) - cmyk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2that's an awesome story. I'm jealous as well.
