- lillsavage, on 07/24/2008, -3/+225To prevent self mutilation, and potential suicide, they plan to ban specific types of music and clothing? Why must people always blame music, games, and tv rather than address the real issues of metal illness and personal responsibility?
- happytedium, on 07/25/2008, -8/+166In Soviet Russia, wrists cut you.
- Nauru, on 07/24/2008, -1/+155Yeah, good luck defining emo music Russia.
- reflex768, on 07/24/2008, -4/+150Funny, but incredibly sinister. As the saying goes, a society that bans Sade, will end up banning Joyce.
- JoeRandom, on 07/25/2008, -11/+142The Moscow Times also interviewed psychologist Inna Cherkova who said:
"Suicide is not a symptom of emo culture. It is the cure". - macwac, on 07/25/2008, -2/+92As much as I am not a fan of emo and goth music, isn't this a violation of Article 19 of the UN universal declaration of human rights?
Article 19
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
Possibly Article 27 (I and II) as well.
http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html - zboyet, on 07/24/2008, -5/+93Aaahhh it is so nice now that the wall has fallen and we have a free Russia....
- picciano, on 07/24/2008, -1/+82Wow, a website with users less literate than Digg.
- lordwow, on 07/25/2008, -2/+61Look I'm not a big fan of emo or goth music either. But don't you guys over in Russia have more important things to worry about.. like say... the economy?
- SniperZero, on 07/25/2008, -4/+62Now if only this law can be applied to myspace.
- tweak567, on 07/25/2008, -0/+55Because that would put the blame on ourselves.
- MenthiX, on 07/25/2008, -1/+48He means banning ANY type of music is a bad thing. Even if the banned music is horrible. This is taking away freedom of expression.
- mickstephenson, on 07/25/2008, -0/+47Do you mean aisle? or are you speaking of some dreadful island of emo music?
- Garlik, on 07/25/2008, -0/+45After the immediate "Haha, pwned" feeling, I realized that this is both wrong and extremely difficult to implement. It takes away those people's right of expression (however much we hate it, they do have to right to make emo music), and, as somebody already said, how will they define what's emo and what isn't? I wouldn't be surprised if by banning emo and goth music specifically they'll begin to ban other genres of music, too. Let's just say that, as a musician, I'm glad I'm not in Russia.
- zerhynn, on 07/25/2008, -1/+42No no, that's just us commenting on their website.
- dsoldier, on 07/25/2008, -2/+35Nah, I think they meant listening to The Cure is a symptom.
- Awsumthx, on 07/25/2008, -4/+35Buried for "finally".
Some people just like that music. - PaulMassive, on 07/25/2008, -4/+31...but Emo/Goth girls are hot! ***** Russia!
- maca2kx, on 07/25/2008, -2/+29It's hilarious how so many people love freedom when it applies only to the things they like. I'm glad I'm viewing these comments through a screen because it means I don't need to see the hypocrite making them.
- dsoldier, on 07/25/2008, -7/+34Highly inaccurate, emo kids don't have the balls to kill themselves.
- RealmDown, on 07/25/2008, -9/+35That would be England.
- jebudas, on 07/25/2008, -0/+26@marc123,
England is responsible for the beatles, the who, & led zeppelin... and you bring pete doherty to the table?!? - pe5t1lence, on 07/25/2008, -0/+22Lord, The Marquis de Sade not Sade Adu!
- mlvassallo, on 07/25/2008, -3/+24Half of you have no idea what "emo" music is and the other half are probably 14 and think you know everything. A lot of early "emo" music has absolutely NOTHING to do with the myspace fashion stereotypes that are portrayed on the internet today.
- alfa5vodka, on 07/25/2008, -3/+24Human rights don't apply to Russia or its inhabitants.
- paulsabo, on 07/25/2008, -2/+23But when you're russian for a drink, there's no time for stalin.
- slantyeyed, on 07/25/2008, -0/+19The UN doesn't have the power to enforce anything.
- theeEqualizer, on 07/25/2008, -1/+20People with common sense who value freedom.
- deviouskoopa, on 07/25/2008, -0/+17Actually, Digg is fairly literate in my opinion... maybe because I'm only comparing it to Youtube >_>
- sacramentalist, on 07/25/2008, -1/+17Relax, man, he was making a pun. A clever one at that.
Apparently your only knowledge of The Cure is "Friday I'm in Love" - johnpaul191, on 07/25/2008, -2/+17This can't be real. Either way, i am appalled that people are cheering a government crackdown on music and culture. "called for emo and goth websites to be regulated and young people dressing like emos or goths to be banned from entering schools and government buildings." That doesn't make anyone uneasy? You really think it would stop there? Like i said, even if this isn't true, it's sad that people here are psyched for big brother to tell you what music you can, or can not, listen to. Obviously you guys are too young to remember Tipper Gore and the PMRC. She declared war on rap, punk, metal and any music with an unwholesome message. Jello Biafra and Ice-T were in her sights back in the heyday of that group.
- lybrel, on 07/25/2008, -0/+15Good sir?!?!?!
Oh I see what you did there, comrade. - theeEqualizer, on 07/25/2008, -3/+18So America isn't the only place trying to divert their citizens' attention from actual issues like the corruption of their democracy and their economy? Its so easy to steal freedom by employing fear.
- Lewiji, on 07/25/2008, -1/+16Kerrang is a terrible UK "rock and metal" magazine that 13-14 year olds read to catch up on the latest My Chemical Romance news. That's why.
- pineutrino, on 07/25/2008, -0/+14"Whatever those damn kids today are listening to."
- cquilliam, on 07/25/2008, -1/+15I'm sure there are diggers that are older than 17
- Screwy1138, on 07/25/2008, -0/+13Please don't propose that the UN has any authority over sovereign states.
- miriv365, on 07/25/2008, -8/+20Why would anyone want to ban Sade? She is pretty good when trying to get your freak on...
- Dragular, on 07/25/2008, -2/+14@ Marc & Mick:
You're wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cult
It would seem the Brits are indeed responsible. - IveGotTheRuns, on 07/25/2008, -0/+11I takes ofens to that, misster.
- mickstephenson, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12They'll probably just decide that anything which isn't a kind of accordian based polka with a tragicly ironic upbeat melody which is surely a satirical quip at communist life beneath the iron curtain is banned. Well anyway I hear that ***** on the streets of England all the time recently with the influx of Poles and man it puts a real East of the Berlin Wall feel to the place. Depressing, I have taken to calling my home town Stocktongrad.
- DestroyFascism, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12So it would then be the cure for most ills...
- zyklon, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10Begin comparing it to Slashdot...
- krytz86, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10GTFO spamming *****
- Wilsomatic, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9They'll just have to cut their wrists to hardcore dance music!
- Nintendesert, on 07/25/2008, -2/+11And if it was a violation? What's the UN going to do to Russia?
- CrushThemTorg, on 07/25/2008, -1/+10As long as they're not banning Rites of Spring.
- slantyeyed, on 07/25/2008, -5/+14what's the stick up people's ass about suicide? if someone wants to kill themselves, why should I force them (at my expense) to keep on living? I got my own problems with people who want to keep on living. If there's freedom of speech, can't we also have the freedom to want to choose if we want to live?
- mackycorp, on 07/25/2008, -1/+10"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"
- High Fidelity - gyutae, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9yeah for some reason I don't think that will go over well, even in russia.
