- WarriorDragon, on 02/17/2008, -20/+57***** the RIAA.
- jackspade, on 02/17/2008, -2/+31AM stations are great. I feel like I'm the only person listening to it.
- BLueSS, on 02/17/2008, -3/+31Let new stations use unused FM frequencies on a short range level?
I'm always open for new things to listen to, so sounds like a great idea to me. - FearFactory, on 02/17/2008, -3/+28They could let AM have the FM stations 24 hours a day. I'd rather hear crackling static than listen to Nirvana, Green Day, Pearl Jam, and Janes Addiction 3000 times every hour.(Not that these bands are bad but there hasn't been variety on FM radio in about 4 million years.)
- crossmr, on 02/17/2008, -0/+21You know, AM radio at night used to be a pretty special thing. Back before the internet and 24/7 you were much more isolated, but AM bounces in crazy ways at night which can extend their signal to ridiculous distances. Once it got dark it was possible to hear AM radio stations from upwards of a thousand miles away.
- humpy, on 02/17/2008, -1/+21Coast to Coast FM?
- cygnus2112, on 02/17/2008, -2/+21AM at PM? I'm confused.
- ghostrc, on 02/17/2008, -4/+21Finally the UFO show on FM!
- Subriot, on 02/17/2008, -4/+16Yes it does, radios broadcasts music!
- robszol, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Now I won't have to deal with that horrible static during coast to coast AM!
- mattsx, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12I wonder if you thought twice about stringing the words "good stuff on FM" together before you hit submit.
- OrangeTide, on 02/17/2008, -1/+13I listen to AM exclusively. better news and traffic. plus there is always the crazy late night stuff like Art Bell.
All the "evil" talk radio people you heard about like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Mike Savage, Dennis Miller, Barbara Simpson, etc are mainly on AM radio. - Subriot, on 02/17/2008, -5/+17Using AM at night? That sounds like an oxymoron.
- yeahbuddy, on 02/17/2008, -0/+11True, I used to listen to a Manhattan, NY AM station all the way in South Carolina. It was pretty cool while driving on the interstate late-night.
- AaronMan24, on 02/17/2008, -6/+16FCC= ***** Clear Channel
- kaijunexus, on 02/17/2008, -2/+12Coast to Coast....AM to FM
soon...planet to planet! - fjc8, on 02/17/2008, -0/+10Still is, and you can listen to shortwave signals from even farther.
- davidlow, on 02/17/2008, -2/+11AM to use FM in the PM?
- SRSco, on 02/17/2008, -0/+8NPR.
- ksong12, on 02/17/2008, -0/+8Finally.. my kids can listen to Radio Disney...without stat........ well.. let's just say they can listen at all.
I do have XM, but frequently find myself listening to broadcast radio due to some signal problems with satellite in my area. - FTLJohnson, on 02/17/2008, -3/+11Uhm, as another on air personality who has been on AM and FM... often simultaneously, and in the top 100 podcasts on Digg.... (look at my big waving dick... I know what I'm talking about) This isn't a new rule, but rather the the REPEAL of current restrictions. Might help to know what you are talking about. Basically, you just advocated FORCING people to have to tune to the AM frequency, rather than letting station's general managers decide what content to run. The reason this is happening, is because the radio market is TANKING. The radio industry is floundering - hardcore... but as an on air personality... you should know that. You should also maybe be aware that this would help smaller stations who tend to own mirror FM and AM stations in smaller markets WAAAY more than it would help big market conglomerates like Clear Channel, Infinity, or Salem. What it reeks of, is probably the FCC finally having to back off the radio market which it has spent years choking the life out of. Don't worry though, I'm sure the PTC and the Catholic league will continue to make sure that little Bobby and Suzie's pure untarnished ears remain safe from the blight of reality and continue to hold radio to standards that no other medium of entertainment is held to. Despite the genre being entirely castrated, talk radio performs far better in late night slots... hence the decision to allow mirroring.
- ryan83189, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7just not the same without the implied crazy that comes with AM.
- Protoss, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7No banana for a month? Ouch.
- 80hd, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7AM stations have much more coverage per watt than FM
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7do you still exist?
- Half-Fast, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6No you're not the only one. There are millions of us that still love local programming along with the big syndicated shows available.
- esta411, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6I once got a signal from a station from Ontario, Canada in Nebraska. It wasn't too clear and didn't come back the next night, but it was really coo. :)
- MiDri, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6They should really be used for different things. FM uses towers and works similarly to cell phones. AM bounces off the atmosphere and can, with the right atmosphere and calculations, be bounced around the planet.
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -3/+8I haven't eaten a banana in a month. But I don't feel the need to share that with anyone.
- OrangeTide, on 02/17/2008, -2/+7AM radio doesn't broadcast significant music, unless you count old big band music that is probably public domai now.
It's monaural and the fidelity is not there. (the bandwidth is less than FM and it is more susceptible to interference) - 80hd, on 02/17/2008, -1/+6It's actually kind of funny that the FCC banned AM/FM simulcasts as well as limiting market proportion sizes so that radio networks couldn't grow and consume the market. In 1996 we repealed the market size limitation and now AM and FM can mirror each other.
Good to know everybody everywhere will be subjected to the same noise :( - fjc8, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5In Ontario (at least the southern parts), with shortwave, you could probably get signals from Cuba without too much difficulty and probably Europe as well.
- 80hd, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5Oh yeah FM is good for top 40 monotony.
Sports OTOH. Wait this is Digg nevermind - Valnar300, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4don't forget about the weather...
- kd1s, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4It won't happen in the northeast. The FM band is already fully populated here in RI at least and much the same in MA. They'd have to yank the low power college radio licenses though I think that will meet with opposition too.
Instead of letting AM broadcasters use FM translation, why not force AM stations to upgrade to digital? - 5urr3al5am, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4Ahhhh commercial free.. like cable tv was supposed to be ... and why not.. you're actually paying for cable
- tomz17, on 02/17/2008, -1/+5COMPLETELY FAILED to understand issue at hand... dugg down...
- Half-Fast, on 02/17/2008, -1/+5Exactly how does an AM station interfere with your FM ipod tuner? Strike 1. Millions of people enjoy AM because of the local programming and news that they can't get on mostly Clear Channel owned FM (nationally broadcast same-old same-old). Strike 2. Go for three?
- bjornski, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4Maybe it already is.
Our first radio signals are still traveling through space.
But that'd be a hellish long distance charge to call in. Though to talk to Art, it might be worth it. - darkphenox, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3No.
- johnpaul191, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3I actually find that the Sirus transmitters ***** with my iPod transmitter more than anything. I had to upgrade my iPod one because Howard Stern kept bleeding over my music. Living in a city means there are not as many open channels as some parts of the country, and we fight for what's available.
- yeahbuddy, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3There are more?
- chall85, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3on occasion i've gotten KMOX from st. louis in texas and colorado at night.
- bjornski, on 02/17/2008, -1/+4AM isn't as homogenized as FM radio. You can still get some variety of stuff, and local programming, on AM.
Now on FM radio, you're 110% correct. It sucks. Very, very badly.
Though I did find a new FM station in Minneapolis lately. It sounds local. They do these strange things called "requests" now and then too.
And the music kicks ass. If you're in Mpls, it's called "The Current", at (I think) 88.9 FM.
I was literally blown away when I heard an FM station that didn't suck. - hoovcluck, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3i like streaming npr off their website too, can't get the local news but they run stories while my station plays classical music
- Wacer, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3More people should get their ham radio license. The rules have been relaxed some so its easier to get a license. People can chat over the Internet but there nothing like talking to someone on the other side of the planet with no wires, it's free, and they generally have some of the same interests.
- metalwolf, on 02/17/2008, -1/+4Go sit in the corner and continue to listen to Sirius then. Apparently unknown to you, there are people who care.
- hoovcluck, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3blasphemy!!!
- schotty, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3Get a friend to show you a sat based radio -- XM or Sirius. Talk fans have a better option with XM, Blues, Jazz, Rap/Hip Hop are best off of Sirius from my experience. I own XM, and have Sirius thru Dish on the TV. Both are great, but have different foci. But really, I was the same way till my one good friend showed me his Xm receiver in his car. I was in love. Liquid Metal was what hooked me :D
- davidlow, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3The article was poorly written. Too much of the wrong info for those who already know the issues, and not enough useful info for the uninitiated.
