- cheetohman, on 06/23/2009, -1/+11Goddamn it, another super talented musician gone. Rest in Peace, Jay. You'll be missed.
- michaelvincent, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11These articles keep failing to mention that he died of an overdose of a pain killer that was prescribed for chronic pain because he was an uninsured musician trying to pull the money together to get his hip fixed. It's too easy to misconstrue something like this as him just being a drug addict.
I feel bad in a lot of ways for how his last days played out. He was made to look like a total jackass and the world's most annoying person in the Wilco doc (a case of creative editing as I've heard it from a few sources), released some superb albums on his own that not a lot of people heard and died weeks after filing a suit against Wilco. What people probably don't realize is that a suit like that takes years to pull together before you can file suit, and it makes me sad to think that a lot of casual Wilco fans that only know Jay through that movie will wrongly think that he was just some druggie that was suing his old band to get some cash because he had no insurance.
It's a sad end to one of the most talented musicians, engineers and producers of recent times. They should offer college courses on his work on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. - indubitably, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7the cause of death is current news.
- ericcodeseven, on 06/23/2009, -1/+8A terrible thing. pain killers kill a lot more people than most know. this is a huge problem in the world
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+8Sad. He was a true talent
- kylafornia26, on 06/23/2009, -1/+7that sucks
- Bic823, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5gladly.
- subliminali, on 06/24/2009, -2/+6yankee hotel foxtrot was an amazing piece of work, i can still throw that album in anytime and listen all the way through...
however, the guy did die literally a month ago though so its odd that this is just now making the front page. - wefandango, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3he didn't play on A Ghost Is Born at all
- PandaOnIce, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4Thats a shame, I just discovered Wilco too.
- Garmonbozzia, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4Before anyone gets any ideas about him being another junkie chasing the dragon, let's look at a few facts.
First, he had a legitimate medical issue requiring pain control.
Second, and this is the big one, he was taking fentanyl. Where most painkillers are dosed in milligrams, fentanyl is so powerful, it is dosed in micrograms. If he was using the patch, it is possible that he had the patch on, and then put a heating pad on top of it. This will cause the drug to dump out all at once, causing an overdose. There are also fentanyl lollipops that are instant release used for breakthrough pain. He might have inadvertently used one too many. In my opinion there isn't nearly enough patient education before handing out these powerful, and DANGEROUS, medicines. - uncouthyouth, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3Jay wasn't just a guitarist, he was a multi-instrumentalist who had an unmistakable musical voice in the Wilco records he was on. And even though I love what Wilco is doing now with Nels Cline the Jay Bennett songs will always stand out to me.
- trentasaurus, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2He died several weeks ago, i guess this story is just about the cause of death.
- otbeverly, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I hear you, but you fail to mention that just because you're prescribed painkillers, you can't be a drug addict. I don't know either way. I do know that I'm still in recovery from issues resulting from prescribed narcotics.
I don't think I Am Trying To Break Your Heart really made him look like that much of a jerk either. Maybe I just kind of expect some member of any band to be the one pushing things in the studio, for better or for worse.
Anyway, I doubt that anyone who's had problems with drugs due to taking them recreationally or being over-prescribed would read this and call him a 'druggie.' And anyone who does really needs to get out of their shell and see the world. While also one of the most miserable times in my life, drug dependency gave me a whole new perspective of the world. - Rain12913, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1He means they don't need to say "ex" since he's obviously no longer their guitarist as he's dead. However, from the other comments above it seems like he hadn't been their guitarist for a while.
- Bic823, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1A Ghost is Born is great. Basically all of their material is stellar (although I've never gotten into Sky Blue Sky, except for Impossible Germany, which is a great song)
- Bic823, on 06/24/2009, -2/+3It's going to sound really tired, me bringing this up here, but I think this is one of the strangest things in our society... where thousands of people die from accidental overdose from painkillers, and yet Marijuana is an illegal substance.
- tidu, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1he died a few weeks ago.
- aqrilik, on 06/24/2009, -3/+4Never sue Jeff Tweedy.
- moothemagiccow, on 06/24/2009, -1/+2dude died weeks ago
- robharper, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1well ***** me.
- dylansbeard1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1that was Nels Cline. way more talented.
- ftc08, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Die.
- ftc08, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I report people as ***** as you.
- CowbellCrusader, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1lol @ the irony
- fsufanizzle, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I understand that, but why wait for the cause of death to post it? The fact that he is dead is the only thing that really matters. I could have phrased it better I suppose but regardless, it's no big deal...
- KarateMedia, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I'm pretty sure the story of his death was posted here back when it happened. The official cause of his death is equally important, as any other previous comments about it were pure conjecture.
- robharper, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1digg down
- Danyallsun, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0He seemed to take a downturn during the filming of I'm Trying to Break Your Heart. I wonder if the portrayal of him in that film affected him. I would not have wanted to be represented on film like that even if I didn't understand the direction the band was going in or whatever. I remember thinking after the film, "they all seem cool except that Jay dude." Certainly I am not the only one?
RIP - KarateMedia, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1The official report on the cause of death is not old news. This information was just released.
Unlike most cop shows, in real life the police don't get an official cause of death minutes after finding the body. - Rain12913, on 06/24/2009, -2/+2Yeah you sound really upset about it. I hope your shows don't get screwed up by this.
- richirwin, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1I can't digg this. It's just a damn shame.
- bardamu, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1Spent most of the day listening to wilco. It helps me keep my sanity at work. This is a shame.
- blacklilyninja, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1this is truly sad. Living with his issues were had to be difficult. I loved his music. I wish his family well.
- mikeruiz7, on 06/24/2009, -3/+3Wow, weird to see this article come up now--he's been dead for a month. I was a big Jay Bennett fan when he was in Wilco, and it's safe to say that except for A Ghost Is Born (and I guess their live album), they've suffered the loss of such a great talent. It's sad to see him go, I'll throw in Summerteeth and reminisce.
- abortio, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1You'll be missed, Jay. Thanks for everything you gave us.
Also, I agree aqrilik, never ever ***** sue Jeff Tweedy. - sonder, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1One less hipster douchebag in the world to poullute the air with their ***** music. Well done grim reaper!
- dylansbeard1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+0He hasn't been with the band since 2001
- Yodzilla, on 06/24/2009, -4/+3OH NO NOT SOMEONE FROM WILCO
- fsufanizzle, on 06/24/2009, -2/+1Strange to see this now as it's rather old but regardless, very sad stuff. Just saw Wilco at Bonnaroo and it felt strange throughout. RIP.
- kleon777, on 06/24/2009, -2/+1This is really sad news. Prayers going out to his family.
- joosebuck, on 06/24/2009, -7/+5wilco, you uncultured *****.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYNlIDQuxLk - mcsenget, on 06/24/2009, -5/+2yeah, digg me down.
- dylansbeard1, on 06/24/2009, -3/+0Wilco has been phenomenal since Jay Bennett was kicked out of the band, both live and in the studio. With the addition of Nels Cline on guitar, it's hard to find a better touring rock band today.
don't get me wrong, i grew up listening to early Wilco and loved Jay's input on the band. but he was a junkie and the rest of the band suffered because of it. - mcsenget, on 06/24/2009, -4/+1he made a choice
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -5/+2Shoulda sang about legalizing pot...
- robharper, on 06/24/2009, -4/+1His work with Wilco was brilliant. His playing on A Ghost Is Born was some of the best ever. RIP
- robharper, on 06/24/2009, -4/+1It says ex right in the ***** title.
