- shark72, on 10/12/2007, -23/+99So, digg user "DoodlesMcPooh" asks digg users to participate on a DDOS attack on a web site.
I'm curious if this really represents the mindset of the typical digg user. Please digg me DOWN if you think that using digg to coordinate DDOS attacks is appropriate, and that this is a mature, responsible thing to do. Please also digg me DOWN if you think that this is an appropriate way to show the RIAA that we would like them to eliminate DRM, lower prices, cooperate with Russian sites, etc.
Please digg me UP if you think this reflects poorly on digg's userbase and audience. Please also digg me UP if you think this sends an inappropriate message and just confirms the RIAA's perception of music pirates as hooligans. - fober, on 10/12/2007, -6/+75"Digg this article and crash the RIAA server!"
What article? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+62The RIAA has many members... but the direction the organization takes is decided by the Board of Directors.
http://www.riaa.com/about/leadership/board.asp - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53You can't crash the RIAA server, don't be silly.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44"More people need to use peer guardian. Who would they sue then?"
Random old people and orphans that don't own computers, of course. - challenger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42A pirate's life for me!
- roastnewt1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34from the F.A.Q. portion of Fat Wreck's website:
"What the ***** is the RIAA and is Fat part of it?
"They are the Recording Industry Association of America. Are we a member? Not only no, but ***** NO! We spent three years having our label’s name (which was mispelled) removed from their members list. A year went by, then our name showed up again on their ***** list! Who are these sonsabitches?! Needless to say, we’re in the process of having our name removed again, but they aren’t being too cooperative."
edit: ah, tarmas beat me to it - gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33The RIAA and the MPAA, while both distinct organizations, share many of the same members already. Three of the RIAA "Big Four" (Sony, Universal and Warner) are also three of the MPAA "Big Six". Fox and Dreamworks, while not of the RIAA "Big Four" are normal RIAA members as well as two of the MPAA "Big Six".
These companies are SO evil, they're dons in several mafias at the same time. - RiverBelow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32***** the RIAA
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Sweet Jesus, there's 1,637 record labels in there!!!
- JJCDAD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Probably just doesn't respond to PING. Pretty common as a security measure I think.
- msikma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23@Gibhunter: no amount of digging can increase their page ranking. The size (and amount) of the site(s) that link to it make up part of the page rank.
Though, unfortunately, I don't think we're going to be able to crash their server! Prove me wrong, though. :-) - tange1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Um, no its not down. Many sites dont respond to pings.
For instance: Is microsoft.com down right now, its not responding to pings!? Oh No's! - bushawa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Someone should start a site that allows you to donate money to artists when you download their music illegally. There are way too many middle men in this industry. I was talking with the guys in the band LoNero and they say it is only a matter of time before their empire crumbles. But I think something has to give on the musician's and our side to make it happen.
- Tarmas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Here's Fat Wreck's statement about beeing on this list:
"What the ***** is the RIAA and is Fat part of it?

It seems that this list is a bunch of crap. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Yar har, fiddle-dee-dee...
- eetraveller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Or at least link to something a little more intensive than text:
http://www.riaa.com/gp/photos/default.asp - kaykfrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16That is because MySpace is owned by News Corp (Fox)
- DocXango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Yes, my beloved 4AD is not on the list!
If your fav artist is on one of these labels, just torrent the music and send the artist $10, the artist will make more money that way anyway. - btattersall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16But would you really stop downloading if you found out you were stealing from someone outside the RIAA?
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Sega? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!1111!!!1numberone
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Interesting that MySpace is listed. Somehow I'm not surprised.
- karel747, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14DoS, anyone?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17You leave me a bit torn, I'm afraid, so I can't really digg you up or down.
I completely agree that it's a childish thing to do and at best is abusing the "power" of Digg.
I however think it's perfectly appropriate to do to the RIAA given that they are essentially legally terrorizing people who are very often obviously innocent.
We don't have to be better than them, we just have to win. :) - guyatwork37, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"The RIAA does a lot of other things besides sue college kids and old people who don't own a computer. The RIAA certifies records Gold, Platinum, etc. If you want your record company's record certified, you have to be a member. I'd say that is a pretty strong incentive."
Who the ***** cares if a record makes platinum or gold? Big ***** whoop. That is a retarded reason to support them. - Tarmas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Fat Wreck is trying to get their entry removed for the second time. See their faq.
Although Epitaph is really a member, unfortunately. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13dir/w
...I'm getting nothing. I guess it's not a DOS tool... - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Best one of those yet. Not spam: http://www.hongfire.com/cg/showphoto.php/photo/68693/si/Pirate
- sandeepg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Ahh...if only we were grammatically correct whilst crashing the RIAA's website, all would be right with the world...
- threemonkeydust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ha ha you made my evening. But, what's with the crotch-spaded ninja??
- jersey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I noticed Sub Pop wasn't on the list. Excellent, now I don't feel guilty about ever supporting them or their artists.
Also, it seems like this list could be used to promote piracy .... don't see the label that represents the artist you want to download on here? Great ... click away! - jakepaulus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13The RIAA does a lot of other things besides sue college kids and old people who don't own a computer. The RIAA certifies records Gold, Platinum, etc. If you want your record company's record certified, you have to be a member. I'd say that is a pretty strong incentive.
- roastnewt1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It looks like the RIAA is just adding random labels to its list.
Epitaph isn't part of the RIAA, neither is Fat Wreck Chords, neither is Lookout! Records.
It looks like Matador finally got the RIAA to take their name off the list, it used to be on there too. - mjhamilton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I thought they were going to name the ***** in the RIAA so we could hunt them down like subway rats, burn their dirty rat bodies, then use the remains as toilet bowl cleaner. I wouldn't care if my toilet got dirtier because of it, I just want to ***** all over them like they have on us for years.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I just steal music from labels who are members of the RIAA.
No foot stomping needed. - squeedgie4me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Damn. There's more companies on that list than people who actually legally buy their music!
- no2gates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They are the same evil people who go into my dryer and pull out 1 of my socks, so I don't have a pair anymore.
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I, too was saddened to see them on their... unfortunately all legitimate record labels are members. anyone who's not is just some small guy promoting local bands on myspace
edit: i just noticed this link lower down the page... not my find, just reposting. http://www.fatwreck.com/community/faq - minorthreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Im disappointed to see Fat Wreck Chords on there.. If you know anything about them, Its probably safe to assume labels who join, join for a reason other than fighting the pirates of world.
- carcass350, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.riaaradar.com
Just search for artist/record label/UPC codes and you can find out if it is RIAA or not - lensman00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Good thinking. This is a great way to show Forefront Label 3rd Party, University MG Dist, RykoDisc and other members of the RIAA how we feel.
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5just load the page.. and keep pressing ctrl-F5 every few seconds.. that'll do it...
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"SOMEONE in our society needs to stage the pranks, demonstrations and firebombings..."
Firebombings? You suggest firebombings and currently stand at only -4 diggs? That's a sad commentary on digg users. And you seriously need counseling. - zate, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Jesus so now digg is a DOS tool ?
lame. - greganalytic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The RIAA should actually be referenced by these members for maximum negative publicity to these companies.
So instead of RIAA say "Push Records, Philips, Virgin Commercial Marketing and other members of the RIAA"
Here's a handy bookmarklett that will randomly choose 3 members of the RIAA each time you want to talk about it:
http://riaa.odonnell.nu - squegie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Four
- xmokshax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it's a shame all the record companies' names are just text. now, if only they'd posted their names in one huge RAW file... THEN maybe we could crash the server. what were they thinking? as it is, 79kb a pop isn't going to kill the site, NOT EVEN with the digg effect...
- VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@jakepaulus and guyatwork37
The problem is this. Just like any other product, there are two distinct views you can take with music:
1. It sells well and therefore the band is "successful" even if they only churn out candy colored puke that smells nice to the average tween, but is a complete failure artistically speaking
2. It sounds good, sends a message, conveys an emotion, sets a mood, establishes an identity, and is highly acclaimed by a small group of like minded thinkers and is therefore artistically successful, but it doesn't sell well outside of very small niche groups and is therefore financially a "failure"
That's the real problem. The RIAA doesn't give much of a rat's ass about art. They're in it for the money and if some art gets sold (which can happen) it's all incidental. Real music lovers, on the other hand, are in it for deeper reasons and if it doesn't sell well they don't care as long as the band or artist continues to create more of the same. I'm sure you can guess which side of the coin I fall on. I'll give you a hint, nearly every act I like is not very well known... - Kickersny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7To the MAFIA(A) comments: That was an April Fool's joke from last year. http://mafiaa.org/
