It would still "dance" and you could still use it as a fireplace. It may aesthetically look worse, but even so, that can be fixed.

I built one with a buddy back in HS... all it takes (if you have a guitar / bass amp lying around) is some pvc and some natural gas. This doesn't impressed me in the least.
