- chicoer2001, on 11/04/2007, -1/+42The group should sue EMI for a ridiculous amount per song violation. Say 1 million.
- webcure, on 11/02/2007, -0/+21I love Robert Fripp and will never forget his Frippertronics.
For those of you guitarists who don't know him, King Crimson is great, but check his record Exposure
Waiting for the Flood with Peter Gabriel or the song with Darryl Oates - Bright star or something -
This guy Robert Fripp gets really amazing sounds out of a guitar.
Let's hope he gets his digital licensing rights in order and offers full downloads...
- compgeek, on 11/03/2007, -3/+22RIAA you have just got owned. I hope EMI gets ***** in the ass over this one
- msaleem, on 11/03/2007, -0/+17Reminds me of The Sex Pistols when they ripped EMI a new one. Simpler times.
- cs188, on 11/04/2007, -2/+18lol @ record industries gettin' pwned
- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -1/+16king crimson was a big influence on TOOL, so for any tool fans out there who haven't yet, check em out
- ncapone, on 11/03/2007, -1/+15RIAA's in the court of the Crimson King, so those 21st Century Schizoid Men can sit back and munch on Cat Food and wait for Poseidon's wake to wash them off this planet.
- CyberSkull, on 11/04/2007, -1/+14I'd love to see them clubbed with the same DMCA lawsuit that they have been pushing on others.
- arjie, on 11/03/2007, -0/+12Now this, this is piracy.
- NoOneButMe, on 11/04/2007, -0/+10And Digg is different, how?
- tizz66, on 11/03/2007, -0/+9Do you even know what that word means?
- subliminalurge, on 11/04/2007, -1/+9On Digg, you will frequently find the words "Most Amazing" and "Ever!!!!!!!!" added to the description from the source article.
- weareallzombies, on 11/03/2007, -0/+8It's ironic that you mention that, because he actually does own and operate his own download site, DGMLive.com, which has done a bang-up job of making available dozens of live performances of King Crimson from their most recent concert dates all the way back to the very first incarnation of the band in 1969. Additionally there's been several otherwise previously unreleased items there from his many side projects, including that of his joint effort with legendary producer Brian Eno. And downloads come in your choice of MP3 or FLAC and can be downloaded using BitTorrent. So nice to see one of the serious old guards reject the corporate options offered by the major label conglomerates and embrace the DIY aspect of digital music, well before Radiohead ever did.
- slashbot, on 11/03/2007, -2/+10You must be new here
Nearly all of the articles on slashdot end up here. A lot of people go to both sites. - Meowbiusfox, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7In the old days of the LP,the record companies would steal
directly from their own warehouses. Now they do it to the artists digitally. - MrGordonLiu, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7Wow - I've been listening to King Crimson non-stop this whole week. The 80's period - Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. Member for member, I think KC is the most talented band ever. Man do they ever rule. One of the best live acts as well.
- ferrofluid, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6Not just frivolous downloading like the hordes of Kazaa john doe cases,
but direct commercial piracy, and commercial sabotage, well worthy of the $250,000 penalty per track.
The court case is going to be hilarious, seeing the EMI (1/4 of RIAA) in the dock, defending itself against the charges. - frostbyt, on 11/02/2007, -1/+7Robert Fripp...I don't know who he is but I am downloading his music right now.
- mrmacky, on 11/03/2007, -0/+5Isn't the max (per song) $250,000 USD
I'm probably wrong, as I haven't been sued yet :( - TreDubZedd, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4Who is being lured or tricked into breaking the law? EMI is infringing copyrights of their own free will, without any outside influence--let alone law enforcement.
- ChaosMotor, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Wow, the music industry ripping off artists and breaking the law? Big surprise! Funny how they get all pissed only when they aren't the ones benefiting from it.
- scorpionking, on 11/03/2007, -2/+5why is it so difficult to teach them a lesson.... dont ever buy another ***** CD. for every CD sold a band can only hope to get $2.... and how much does a CD cost?? like $15 ?
- swoopdog, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3EMI? GOODBYE!
- BuddhistPirate, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3I see what you did there.
- tizz66, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Of course the other catch is that only police can commit entrapment. Record labels aren't the police, even though they sometimes think they are.
- joeislike, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Dugg.... didn't even read story... but Robert Fripp and King Crimson = WIN.
- Nick519, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2discipline, beat, and three of a perfect pair are all fantastic albums. a perfect trilogy, if you will.
- Nick519, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2cat food, cat food, cat food - AGAIN??
- ferrofluid, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Heres hoping theres a RIAA victim out there with a King Crimson song on their RIAA rap sheet,
they can appeal now due to the fact that the RIAA used bogus evidence. - Shigglyboo, on 11/03/2007, -1/+3thanks so much for spelling owned properly. you have reinstalled a little bit of faith to me.
- zombies187, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2If you like the eighties period, you should look into his work with Guitar Craft.
- Phillydroog, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2I think Fripp should Thelahunginjeet the damn RIAA.
Then feed em cat food. - kaelyiesta, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2King crimson is awesome, but thats beside the point. EMI has pulled this kind of ***** before. It shouldn't matter how decent the group is, they dont deserve that kind of crap. I hope one day to see that all the true artists break away from the middle men like this and do just fine on their own.
- kaelyiesta, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3And if you do happen to appreciate King Crimson, you may also enjoy Jethro Tull. Another, lesser influence, but very interesting nonetheless.
- ferrofluid, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2"knowingly providing illegal material."
Ignorance is not a defence in law, it might mitigate the sentence but not the conviction.
The RIAA copyright cases they pursue against the Kazaa hordes is a good example of this, there was loads of dodgy website promoting kazaa and offering the software for $30 and the chance of free music, to use and download music with these programs was illegal and got a lot of people sued etc.
The major trouble was that on the website they had big statements that it was legal, and people who didnt know any better thought by paying for kazaa they were ok, so they were dumb, but theres lots of dumb people out there that are not lawyers. - AndrewJC, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Ah, fair point. Is there even a term for trying to trick people into doing something illegal if you're not a law enforcement authority?
- ferrofluid, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1They can afford to pay appropriate damages, and it might wake up the Record industry to practice safer practices.
"EMI is off to see the Wizard..." - Dizbuster, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1That's a terribly written article, but at least it's getting Fripp some attention.
He is well acquainted with record industry treachery, spending many years of his life to avenge getting ***** by scumbags. Go the dgmlive website and check out his stuff. Read the blog too--he's a funny guy. - edial, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Dugg -for being a mean music interwebz raper
- NeCtUr, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1but in order to appeal they would have had to actually take the case to court anyway. if they settled out of court then there is nothing they can do. a settlement is basically a forfeiture of rights.

- antisoc, on 11/03/2007, -0/+0I would send them a friendly "let's settle out of court for 500,000" letter before pressing a lawsuit :-D
- inactive, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0If EMI is ripping off the Beatles and King Crimson, then such a robber baron should be sued. How two-faced would that be, if a record company ripped off its artists while suing pirates at the same time?
- blindmelon1, on 11/03/2007, -0/+0My fave at the moment, is Larks Tongues in Aspic.....
But it'll change next week :)
Original poster was right, most talented band ever.... Such a diverse catalogue to choose from too! :) - blindmelon1, on 11/03/2007, -0/+0I could tolerate DRM if the downloads werent lossy...
In a perfect world, internet music would be DRM free, and lossless FLAC.... and priced a lot better. -
