"Don't Download this Song" Song by Weird Al for Free
weirdal.com — About how to break national copyright laws and get the RIAA on your tail. "You start out stealing songs, then you're robbing liquor stores..." Very much tounge-in-cheek.
- 1930 diggs
- digg it
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+110****Real URL to get the song!****: http://www.myspace.com/weirdal
Digg wouldn't let me put that as the URL.- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+251At least Digg knows that MySpace sucks.
- Dakoman, on 10/12/2007, -25/+13the best part is that its the only song on his myspace that allows you to download it :)
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19You killed WeirdAl.com!
It's been dugg for no reason :) - giid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Not to sound ungrateful or anything, I love the song, but the downloadable mp3 sounds horrible. A bunch of pops and cracks in it, did he use an mp3 encoder from 1996?
- Quickbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6giid, I've downloaded other songs from MySpace, and many of them suffer from pops and cracks.
- KSava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah it's 96 kbps. Really crappy quality.
- patbenatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's MySpace... of course it's crappy.
- anchorman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://myspacem-837.vo.llnwd.net/73/87/90827837/90827837_4e31ac66.mp3?e=1156375257&h=bc2896311322a1d21a55022255fd7469
- tvguyau, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33Listened to the song a few times. Its cracks me up.
He has a valid point as most of us would know.
But i do find it funny its a song about downloading music.
Yet he made it a free download.
I guess he wanted to get some discussion happening.
Which i think it will.
Still looking forward to the album- mvnicosia, on 10/12/2007, -44/+4He wanted to get someone to remember his name
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -15/+3If by discussion you mean shameless free self-promotion, then yes, he got some discussion happenin.
- TheFoundry, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Fear Before The March Of Flames has a song called "Hey Kid I'm A Computer. Stop All The Downloading!" That they offer for free download at www.myspace.com/marchofflames. Great band if you're into hardcore/grind/mathcore. I doubt any of you are though.
- fatbuster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I don't know what this song is a parody of but I like how it sounds like one of those "save the children" type of songs. Sound like there's some kind of movement to stop the mass downloading of songs. All of this of course was organized by 80's rock bands and pop stars.
- sixtimes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Actually, it's not a direct parody of any one song, it is just a style parody. Generally, only five out of twelve songs on any one of his albums will be parody; the other seven will be polka medley, style parody (as is this), or straight up original.
- blast_flame, on 10/12/2007, -33/+1I think it is a direct parody. I remeber hearing a song called download this song on the radio.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9A "style parody" would be called a "pastiche".
- Cander, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2I wouldn't take this as a serious message of Al's thoughts on the issue. His songs often cover pop culture and headline news. And RIAA lawsuits are in the news daily.
Besides just based on the lyrics, I can see he isn't too concerned with the issue - beckerist, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5MC Lars - Download This Song
but this is NOT a parody of this song...just for those who were wondering... - Eliza101, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2MC Lars... Download This Song is better and more political...
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26- A "style parody" would be called a "pastiche".
It's a shame that the term pastiche hasn't retained its negative connotations from the cultural studies field. Something should be labled as pastiche when a source is drawn from that is unrelated to the new material, and is parodied for the parody's sake.
Instead, we think of pastiche as a tongue-in-cheek homage. But as we see here in a good example of pastiche (Madonna's 1989 video for 'Express Yourself' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMt53HYkfY8 ), Fritz Lang's Metropolis is being used for no other reason than recognizability. It's not parody because it's not making fun of (or being playful with) the material, but it's not homage because there's no reason to pay tribute to Lang in Madonna's material. Weird Al's song, therefore, isn't pastiche.
So let us rise up and separate 'style parody' from pastiche and embrace our inner cultural studies' hearts. - slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5I've yet to hear a good artist beginning with "MC"
- sinisterkungfu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5You've obviously never heard MC Hawking, or MC Plus+
http://www.mchawking.com/
http://www.mcplusplus.com/ - psych0fish, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1could it be a play on the MC Lars song "Download This Song"?
- psych0fish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1the burying on digg is out control. very sad.

- vandalet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks Bro, I cant go to myspace on this computer and i wanted to hear that.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24http://weirdalprevents.ytmnd.com/
I feel shameless linking to ytmnd.com, but I thought this one was particularly funny :)- Kranklin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Hey, where can i download that Pirate song, Its Alright!
- designbydave, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2OMG i love ytmnd! Thank you!
- Zaxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Just an F.Y.I. the pirate song is not a Weird Al song it is from some kids tv show: http://digg.com/videos_comedy/Do_what_you_want_cause_a_pirate_is_free_you_are_a_pirate
- weirdo513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The song is in fact from an Icelandic (?) kids show called Lazytown, see the original show footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0yI2MQf8Tk
- MikeJo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2From what I read, it seems to be a british show featuring a girl with pink hair who turns everyone into a pedo. (allegedly)
- danieldl, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Weird Al...
- bs0l, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5thank you joeolivas - i hate myspace music
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Nothing can beat System of a Down's album "Steal This Album!" that looked like a burned CD with Sharpie writing.
- mandrsn1, on 10/12/2007, -26/+17That was pretty funny. Too bad it was System of a Down.
- CoSMoSYS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Smashing Pumpkins did the same thing likewise with BNL
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Actually, the Smashing Pumpkins did one better for most people.
They released their last album, Machina II, and it only made it out to people over the internet, seeing as only 25 copies were ever produced. And they did it back in 2000.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MACHINA_II/The_Friends_%26_Enemies_of_Modern_Music - JJP0223, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Sublime did this 4 years earlier.

- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Its so true.. Downloading songs did make me want to hit children with my car.. After 2 Trojans and a virus, I realized where my life was headed. I finally got help and am in recovery at ITMS. Hope I can stay legal this time...
- beckerist, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6just scrub and pray dude...scrub and pray...
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Bad Hair Day was the first CD I ever owned (note: I had cassettes for a few years before that). My copy of it is a misprint though, Weird Al is supposed to be in Color on the CD and on mine its black and white.
- Angmar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's not a misprint, too cut costs of the CD the label decided to change the CD to black and white on later copies.
- BritishGolgo13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Mine is b/w as well. My cousin bought it when it came out and his was in color; I bought mine years later. Doubt it's a misprint, I'm sure they just ran out of toner and when the boss asked for someone to buy some, he got stabbed in the face.
- ThePict, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@Angmar (nice nic BTW, LoTR)
I'm not usually a language nazi, but that was just 'too' much.
I know it's counter-intuitive, but there are three 'tos' in the English language:
to = from here to there
too = too much or me too
two = one plus one, or three minus one - jgeorgeson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@The Pict
A few sentences I like to use to illustrate differences
It's over here with its things.
They're over there with their things.
You two should come to the store too.
- sungam3D, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Hell yeah, Weird Al rulz.
New music vid on yahoo in 45mins ^^
http://music.yahoo.com/premieres
+Digg Weird Al Rocks- lil_isie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2You know I did the same thing. Maybe he'll listen to me (or at least one of us); since we have the same birthday (Oct. 23rd), I send him a birthday card from time to time down the years.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2You made the post 47 minutes ago, and it still hasn't 'premiered'. I'm constantly reloading the page in the hopes that the video will appear, and it hasn't so far.
- goatomatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7FTA
"VIDEO WORLD PREMIERE!
That's right, we're not messin' around here! The first music video from "Straight Outta Lynwood" premieres tomorrow night (Tuesday the 22nd) on Yahoo at 10 PM Pacific time!"

- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Even though I realise that he's a busy celebrity and all, I messaged him telling him of this article being here on Digg. I suggested he get a username and join in the discussion :D
ok, so that won't happen- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2never know... weird al has done stuff like that... I remember a couple of years ago on the "call for helpathon" with Chris Pirrillo he actually called in and the put him on.
- i64X, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58Lyrics:
Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge
To break international copyright law
By downloading MP3s from file sharing sites
Like Morpheus or Grokster, or Limeware or Kazaa
But deep in your heart you know the guild would drive you mad
And the shame would leave a perminant scar
Cuz you'd start out stealing songs, then you're robbing liquor stores
And selling crack and running over school kids with your car
[Chorus]
So don't download this song
The record store's where you belong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh don't download this song
You don't want to mess with the R-I double A
They'll sue you if you burn that CD-R
It doesn't matter if you're a grandma or a seven year old girl
They'll treat you like the hardbitten criminal scum you are
[Chorus]
So don't download this song
Don't go pirating music all day long
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh don't download this song
Don't take away money from artists just like me
How else can I afford another solid gold Humvee
And diamond studded swimming pools, these things don't grow on trees
So all I ask is everybody please
[Chorus]
Don't download this song
Even Lars Ulrich knows it's wrong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh don't download this song
Don't download this song
{Oh please don't do it or you}
Might wind up in jail like Tommy Chong {remember Tommy}
Go and buy the CD {right now} like you know that you should {go out and buy it}
Oh don't download this song
Don't download this song
Or you'll burn in hell before too long {and you deserve it}
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should...- rkuchiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You forgot the {you cheap bastard!} part at the very very end
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I swear I saw some _dugg up_ comments above my post that were taking the song for the text value "agains downloading". Have the diggers lost their sense of satire?
- TheJosher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks, two minor corrections though:
...know the guild... --> ...know the guilt...
...like the hardbitten criminal scum... --> ...like the evil hardbitten criminal scum... - ochito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks for posting the lyrics. Just a couple of corrections:
The *guilt* would drive you mad. (I don't know how a guild could mess with your head)
*permanent* scar.
- procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -60/+3umm screw weird al. hes done.
mc lars - download this song
wayyyyyy better
http://www.myspace.com/mclars- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18That sucked.
- RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Lol that is funny.
- patterson, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Kind of ironic how it's the only one where the "Download" link isn't disabled! Heh!
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I particularly liked his rico suave spoof... TACO GRANDE
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The video for Fat... so funny.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Weird Al - the only artist whose music is worth buying. I just preordered the CD. First CD I've bought this century. No, I'm not kidding.
- Cander, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I think you need to look harder. Plenty of virtually unknown indie and foreign artists with CD's worth buying. You just need to look for em.
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wouldn't be too impossible, that's only 6 years :P
Total music CDs I've purchased this century probably ammount to 1, as well. - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Total music Cd's i have bought in my entire life 1. and yes it was a weird AL CD. CD really are not worth buying most of them i like 1 or 2 songs on it and cant stand the rest.
I am thinking of buying a lemon daemon CD some time though. they have good music.
Wow i just noticed that fire fox 2 was underlining my spelling mistakes cool.
- Galaron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Listen to the next one done - You're Pitiful. A great parody of Blunt's "You're Beautiful". Rock Solid.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Another free Weird Al Song "You're Pitiful".
From http://www.weirdal.com/ (go there for the download links.)
YOU'RE PITIFUL!
Yes, Al recently recorded a James Blunt parody which unfortunately, due to matters beyond his control, will not be appearing on his forthcoming album. But if you're so inclined, you can just download it for FREE! Go ahead, we won't tell anybody! Right-click (option-click for Mac) here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, or here, or here or here, not to mention here, or even here!- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That song is awesome... much better quality download, too. Too bad it wont be on the album, but at least we can still get it. Al is a much better singer than Blunt, too. Myabe thats why his label doesn't want it to get out ;)
