"I'd like to issue a full and categorical denial of this. We've never had any request for such data by anyone, and if we did we wouldn't consent to it.
Of course we work with the major labels and provide them with broad statistics, as we would with any other label, but we'd never personally identify our users to a third party - that goes against everything we stand for.
As far as I'm concerned Techcrunch appear to have made this whole story up." - xParker, on 02/21/2009, -1/+94From the article http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/02/20/did-lastfm-ju ...
Hi from Last.fm, I’m one of the founders (and the original founder of audioscrobbler, the music tracking plugin).
I’m not going to write much right now because i’m rather pissed off this article was published, except to say that this is utter nonsense and totally untrue.
As far as I can tell, the author of this article got a “tip” from *one* person and decided to make a story out of it. Techcrunch is full of *****, film at 11. - inactive, on 02/20/2009, -11/+92***** THE RIAA!
- jmark13, on 02/20/2009, -12/+76This is an outrageous witch hunt that needs to stop!
Can't the RIAA and the record distributers come up with a better business model? Let's give the rights to the artists and the power to the listeners!
I own a record label (www.inmanrecords.com which is not affiliated with the RIAA at all, nor will it until they change their tactics) and I feel like the industry needs to WAKE up and listen to what the people are trying to say. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+41Buried as inaccurate.
- FrozenGonad, on 02/21/2009, -0/+35buried as inaccurate.
- sfrench, on 02/21/2009, -2/+26Any tech-competent lawyer should be able to have a field day with this. LastFM records do not prove that you have a copy of the file, or even listened to it at all. It's quite easy to fake any listening data you want with the writable api:
http://www.last.fm/api/submissions - SexyPopMachine, on 02/21/2009, -1/+25Bury this article. It is wrong, totally inaccurate.
I dugg it before doing the research and now I can't bury it. That really needs to be changed. - clickwir, on 02/21/2009, -2/+25Stop using tiny url. This is the internet, we don't need tiny url's that we don't know where they are going to redirect to. Just use the full real URL.
http://www.last.fm/forum/21713/_/506518/1#f8660996 - mulling, on 02/21/2009, -4/+27Last.fm, owned by CBS, a RIAA company, denies sharing information with RIAA. Film at 11.
- lozzd, on 02/21/2009, -1/+18Just in case you missed it above, you can take this from me too as a staff member: This is utter crap. Thanks to the believers!
- Cennydd, on 02/21/2009, -0/+16Vehemently denied by last.fm. Entirely uncorroborated, therefore buried as inaccurate.
- hawkeye22, on 02/21/2009, -1/+16Inaccurate. Burieddddddddd.
- benologist, on 02/21/2009, -1/+15TechCrunch making something up???
BUT THEY'RE A BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+12On your profile page.
- sfrench, on 02/21/2009, -0/+9One update, if you have the "enable fingerprinting" enabled in your client.... your case gets a little harder (although who's to say you didn't fake the fingerprint too).

Nothing happened. - maverickapollo, on 02/21/2009, -0/+8Complete and utter bollocks.
I have never hit the bury button so hard. - AFelsinger, on 02/21/2009, -1/+9nice, thanks for posting the info!
- Murdats, on 02/21/2009, -1/+9then the RIAA will hold no rights or power, and that is just a horrible concept ... for them, I love the idea.
- Jonas871, on 02/21/2009, -3/+10I have started a topic in their forums.
http://www.last.fm/forum/23/_/506538
Let's see what they say there.
apparently they have already said it was untrue. exactly as stated above.
http://www.last.fm/forum/21713/_/506518/1#f8660996 - w3ber, on 02/21/2009, -0/+7It doesn't matter. Last.fm = a big collection of meta tags. There is no "legal" link between the actual data (mp3) and the meta tags.
- cmder, on 02/21/2009, -1/+8Bury this and digg this instead please http://digg.com/tech_news/Last_fm_really_isn_t_sha ...
- thegitaroo, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6Why would they need to hand over any data? It says right on your profile page what songs you've listened to, along with the date and time.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6good to know - I really want to keep liking last.fm. buried as inaccurate.
- dupajuda, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5the riaa can suck a bag of dicks
- boodog, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5Bury this non-sense!
- TotalHalibut, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6Burden of proof is on the accuser.

Are you available to stand next to me in every line I will ever be in so you can provide hours of unnecessary information to me, ensuring my time waiting is exponentially more enjoyable. - Jadhar, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4thank god this isnt true.
- mickhead, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5The RIAA don't know who to go after, so they'll settle for anyone and everyone.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4Agreed, at least for reasonable size links like that. Some are ludicrous.
- slayermet420, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4No: http://www.last.fm/forum/21713/_/506518/1#f8660996
- t0x2c, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3I can fake the submission data in protest of RIAA tactics. How about that?
- bmcnally, on 02/21/2009, -2/+5The Internet and quick reporting has only encouraged the spread of rumors.
Thanks for posting that. - Ultrace, on 02/21/2009, -3/+6So basically you're saying it doesn't matter what they say, you're convinced they did so?
- SexyPopMachine, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3Thanks captain, but I already know I can undigg an article.
What I meant is that if I undigg it, I can't bury it as whatever. That is what I meant should be changed. :) - clickwir, on 02/21/2009, -2/+5goto your profile page, you can UNDIGG.
http://digg.com/users/SexyPopMachine - DuMbGuM, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Nvm it is fake, buried.

- AmishRefugee, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2oh *****, i just downloaded the new Mastodon leak and listened to it a bunch of times
If I get sued for this, i promise i will never pay money for music ever again - earthwormzim, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2***** spandex!!!
- t0x2c, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2@AirRaven it's been proven time and time again that they cannot.
- jordantneff, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2The one thing they can't record is the legitimacy of the song you're playing. You could be playing the CD on your computer, a legally downloaded mp3, a pirated mp3 - guess what, they don't know, there's no way for them to know because the only things scrobbled are the artist name, the album title, and the song title according to what your music player says it is.
So yeah, I don't care if the RIAA knows what I listen to, they can check out my musical tastes all they want, but guess what... that tells them nothing at all. - pancak3s, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Bury this, I say!
- copypastry, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3buried as inaccurate, also since FOX is releasing Watchmen, it is now up to RIAA to eat ALL OF THE DICKS
Edit: ***** i just misclicked and hit the digg button. halp. - Enigma776, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3***** the riaa. There is a clue in there name America why the ***** should they care outside of America they should have no power anywhere but America.
- JYoungest1, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Wow you even provided them a link to their page. Way to internet!
- aalmeida259, on 02/21/2009, -4/+6***** now how do I undigg?
