Devo Is Dead. Long Live Devo.
wired.com — Many bands from the 80s are seeing a resurgence. Devo have always been pushing the limits and accepting of new music technology now they are getting their second wind.

- aekdbbop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7how come some stories dont appear on the homepage till like 500 diggs.. and some do when they hit 30? man this is like the old days off digg...
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was wondering the same thing. Wasn't the limit recently raised?
Where is this clearly explained? - Misos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It depends on the period of time it achieved a certain number of Diggs.
Example: 30 diggs in two minutes = front page, 200 diggs within three hours = front page, 30 diggs within three hours = no front page
Not the algoritihm they use, I'm sure they have some # of diggs to # of seconds time ratio, but it gives you the basic idea of how it works. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Where is this clearly explained?"
It's not. That's the point. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Agret
The point of what?
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was wondering the same thing. Wasn't the limit recently raised?
- OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I love how this article makes "Devo 2.0" sound like a good thing, go to iTunes and listen to it...
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=129186489&s=143441- AngryBacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Dear God!!
That was horrible!!
Although, I really liked the first review that came up, "If you want kids who like Devo - Buy them Devo, I don't understand how this album even got made..."
I don't know whats worse, Devo 2.0, or Kids' Bop. - ArcticWolf_0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm currently working for Devo2.0's manager...and she sorta went a little crazy with the Devo2.0 swag at work the last few weeks. I think I've got enough stickers to wallpaper my house.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw a video with them in it whilst taking the kids to the Disney Store...never was devolution so real, except maybe when I see Fox News. Can we have a revolution already?
- AngryBacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Dear God!!
- OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah now tell me that was a good idea...
- plugitin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Dude, my mom went to school with these guys.
- orlyyarly, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2i ***** hate devo.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Devo is starting to act like the band the cure, This now the sixth Reunion tour of Devo now.
- iamROBOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True, both Devo and the Cure did soundtracks for a few cartoon nerwork shows.. don't ask how I know this...
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Devo? Like, "Whip It" Devo? No thanks.
- WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Oh man, I dugg this story and thought wow Devo is doing something cool, then AHHHHHHHHH family friendly songs from some snot nosed kids that don't have a clue, oh crap, whats next the Sex Pistols by toddlers.....this idea is really bad, like when I hear a great song bastardized in "elevator music"
I liked Marks work with Life Aquatic, but this is wrong, DEVO and Disney, why oh why Disney.....
Has everyone become corporate sell outs?- fiffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's just 2.0, isn't it? I mean, MiniPops was what it was. (for those of us who remember)
- smperris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think 2.0 is entirely Devo's style, imho. I mean, it's kind of delicious that their subversion is being reproduced by a giant corporation and marketed at kids.
Then again, I do have a history of missing the point. - WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think you may have a good point smperris, we may have all totally missed the whole goof, right over our heads, even the web 2.0 is a jab at the ridiculous web 2.0 moniker that everyone is trying to use as marketing. Since when has Devo ever been serious about anything. This is starting to seem funny now, Devo is on the Disney kids site!
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2On the contrary, Disney is the perfect place for DEVO. And vice-versa.
DEVO's whole intent is to bastardize anyone who would be square enough to take them seriously. - orbitalleader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> Disney, why oh why Disney....
Mark Mothersbaugh has been writing music for kids' shows for years and years now -- i.e., Rugrats. He also has done a lot of work for Disney on projects like the Even Stevens and Herbie Fully Loaded.
And Disney employs They Might Be Giants on a number of projects -- Higgleytown Heroes, the ABCs and the new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Whine and bitch about Disney all you want, holier-than-thou hipster, but any company throwing money at Devo and the Johns is doing something right.
> DEVO's whole intent is to bastardize anyone who would be square enough to take them seriously.
That's a load of crap. They've been in it for the money. That's fine, but let's not get too carried away with the notion of Devo as some sort of countercultural force. Pere Ubu, a tru countercultural force, refused to go on Saturday Night Live in 1978 because they didn't want to sell out; Devo was there front and center. - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know, I have it on tape. Unfortunately, it's in Beta.
DEVO isn't any kind of "force". They prefer the word "farce".
- reboare, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2The problem with the music is, it's DEVO.
The problem with Disney is, they exploit kids.
The problem with this music is, IT SUCKS!
The problem with Disney is, all the executives are 80's kids and want to relive their music, which SUCKED! - sheistcraft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1praise bob!
- reboare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4..and what's next B-52's music sung by grade school kids? ARRGGGG!
- conwayblue, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6 now whip it
into shape
shape it up
get straight
go forward
move ahead
try to detect it
it's not too late
to whip it
whip it good
dunanana. na na. dunanana.. na na. - thexder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Best Buy repair center used to be called DEVO.
Dare to be stupid!- sinmerchant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What's more subversive: Devo subverting pop culture via subversive pop music, or Weird Al subverting Devo subverting pop culture via a brilliant pop music parody of Devo's subversion of pop culture via subversive pop music?
Ow my head hurts.
- sinmerchant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What's more subversive: Devo subverting pop culture via subversive pop music, or Weird Al subverting Devo subverting pop culture via a brilliant pop music parody of Devo's subversion of pop culture via subversive pop music?
- IceUck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Off topic, but I've never understood the phrase "X is dead. Long live X". You've just SAID that X is dead, and now you're wishing X a long life?
"I know you're going to be executed on Sunday, but I wish you a long life until then"- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The expression comes from Old England. It started as, "The king is dead! Long live the king." (You've probably heard that one before.) It means the old king is dead; long live the new king. So in this case, the old Devo is dead; long live the new Devo. (Except that the new Devo kinda sucks. I'll stick with their first two 80's albums, thank you very much.)
- euphoria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_is_dead._Long_live_the_King%21
It comes from the coronation rites of some countries, involving the former king as the first mention and the new king as the second mention. Because the phrase is so interesting, though, it's often re-interpreted the way this article does, referring to the same thing in both instances. It's a catchy sentence.
- hello2usir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Devo is still dead
- scsikool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Devo was fun music. Nothing to take seriously. Never take music (or the artists) seriously. If you enjoy it just have fun with it. If you don't like it, then ignore it and maybe they'll go broke.
- loomis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah Akron! Go watch this Jocko *****:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRguZr0xCOc&search=jocko%20homo
One of the greatest videos ever.- WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks loomis, that was a great video, you know what, this whole kids band thing might just be a shot at our crappy pop culture and show that we are Devolving, how strange is it to have kids singing these songs, like Uncontrollable urge, hmmm why not go for Pink Pussycat? Penetration In The Centerfold? Soft Things?
So maybe it is just another statement or work of art from the band, I can only hope.
I still hate the idea, but either way I still love DEVO, the team of Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale did some amazing song lyrics that got covered by many bands, Nirvana's Turnaround homage was amazing, and dare I say much better with his spin. - jonom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@loomis - sweet find!
@WeThePeople - my thoughts as well on DEV2.O, I believe it is very DEVO.
Check out the graphics by Casale in the videos on the official site http://disney.go.com/disneyrecords/Song-Albums/devo20/ - WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah I'm totally sold on the idea now, very DEVO indeed, just that page alone is hilarious, I like the art in the videos, tons of opportunity for DEVO to exploit.
don't be tricked by what you see
you got two ways to go
I'll say it again in the land of the free
use your freedom of choice
freedom of choice
I wouldn't mind having lots of kids singing this.
- WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks loomis, that was a great video, you know what, this whole kids band thing might just be a shot at our crappy pop culture and show that we are Devolving, how strange is it to have kids singing these songs, like Uncontrollable urge, hmmm why not go for Pink Pussycat? - fiffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a friend of mine is managing them, and a bunch of other '80's bands... the future is then....
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Devo 2.0 ROFL
- chibimmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A little part of my soul died when I saw this 2 months ago.
The rest of it just followed suit. - jonom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We're all DEVO!
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1kraftwerk wanna-be group. i piss on them. 80's groups are making a comeback = coke is getting popular again. end of story.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One Chromosome too many. The article neglected to mention whatever became of those bubbleheaded dog boys they were working on. The recombo DNA lab must be in the basement.
- effexor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh-oh, time to put on the old tinfoilha.. erhm i mean dome.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are we not men?
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We are DEVO!

- GeneHACKman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, great. That's what I want to think about. A bunch of 16-23 year-olds who bought their piano necktie and IZOD shirts at Urban Outfitters for 5 times the price it's worth (FYI kids, ever try Goodwill?) thinking DEVO is the 'next big thing'. What's next? The band Television makes a comeback because the kids think they "sound like The Strokes"?
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate to break it to you, but yes, it's happening right now...
- strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Devo died when it was drafted into the army.
- Hooblagatos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't forget Gerald Casale who is working on the other side of the media spectrum so to speak with his new project Jihad Jerry.

Seems like he is getting a whole lot less subliminal, the whole Devo theory seems to be coming to fruition. And for those who have nostalgia for the good ole'days of Devo can go here.
