- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Sweet! Death Cab is one of my favorite bands. Good to see that they put stuff on there for free.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Nobody likes a music snob.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18For people in this thread:
1) the number of records you own does not equate to your level of expertise in music
2) indie is NOT a genre, it's a status
3) death cab is NOT an indie band any longer as you all know
4) shut up - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think he meant legally free.
- joeuttaro, on 06/06/2008, -0/+12Actually, Angel Pumping Gas isn't by the Postal Service. It is by a band called Lindsay Pool. It is commonly mislabeled through P2P applications.
- thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Death cab IS NOT on an indie label anymore.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Unless I'm mistaken, they are on Atlantic (even less "indie" than Geffen imo):
"In November, 2004 Death Cab for Cutie signed a "long-term worldwide deal" with Atlantic Records, leaving their long-time label Barsuk Records..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Cab_for_Cutie_(band)
So I am hoping that we start helping promote other indie labels like Sony. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Because all whores are free am I right? I'm all the whores you know give out free promo blowjobs to boost their business but where I'm from whores signed contracts with major pimps don't give away free blowjobs. Giving things away for free is not what a whore is about. That's what nuns and charity are about.
- quaffapint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The funny thing is that I enjoy Postal Service so much more than Death Cab, but Postal Service is just a side project for Death Cab front and some others - I wish they would switch that around...
Thanks for the torrent info - will have to take a look at all the bands and see if I can find something new - which is really the idea behind this... - Azmi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm glad to see that many bands (indie or not; honestly, I don't care) are reaching out through Bittorrent. I absolutely love Death Cab's music, and I've always enjoyed The Shins and Postal Service too.
- BrainInAJar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"INDIE IS NOT A GENRE"
Strictly speaking, neither is "alternative", but it's been used in such a fashion so long that it's de facto concidered a genre these days.
Good job, your music snobbery got obsolete... hand off the "music jerk" label to the college hipsters & stop worrying about it - insidesource, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Quote #1: "Death Cab is the best band ever"
Quote #2: "Death Cab sucks ass"
-Extra! Extra!
Some people like some bands, while other people don't.
-Read all about it!
Bands I like are underrated. Bands I hate are overrated.
-Next issue out soon! - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32 smart bands distributing music the new way. More power to them....
- modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Emo=depressing mall-punk.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dont get it confused with punk.. even slightly.
- ratbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Huh, all Seattle/Northwest bands. I am assuming it has something to do with Bram Cohen living in Bellevue.
- jbrevik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think people spend to much time categorizing music into obscure genres than actually listen to it. Having these concrete genres destroys music. The idea that an artist must stick to a certain sound or appeal to a certain demographic is absurd. So when someone tells you that the band is indie, ask them more about the band. The word 'indie' implies alot of things, especially ones own self righteous attitude.
- MyDocuments, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8indie is not a genre. period.
- KF6BBL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really like Death Cab, so I just watched the video. Although I appreciate them allowing this be be shared, it's of very poor quality.
The video has been stretched and is distorted from the correct aspect ratio.
When it was captured it was not deinterlaced properly, showing comb edges anytime someone moves.
The audio was overdriven and clips on the opening musical intro.
The video itself was repeated twice in the download, so it really should be edited down to a single clip.
I hate to be so bitchy about it, but I would expect better from an official release, free or not. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually Scottauth is absolutely correct.
Indie used to mean only independent, but because it often represents a certain style of music, which is "in" right now, a lot of previously "indie" bands are getting picked up by major labels... Sometime's it's also called "artrock" and lots of other names.
To the snobby "mywhitenoise", I like all the bands you listed, and believe it or not, I also like DCFC... I realize it's sometimes cool for people like you to dislike certain bands just because of their being mainstream or popular, but it doesn't make the actual music any less good. - scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you're curious the female vocals on the Postal Service record are done by Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley. This year she released a disc w/ the Watson Twins that is pretty good too. She was also the young actress in the movie The Wizard.
- schwegler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ ka0tic
Is Deathcab for Cutie emo?
When I think emo, I think Rights of Spring, Fugazi and Sunnyday Real-estate... However, the folk-rockish bands like the Shins and Deathcab are called emo by a lot of my friends.
God, genres are confusing. - adamnikyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Postal Service is just Ben Gibbard of DCFC and Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel.
Jenny Lewis guest vocals on few songs.
It's called the Postal Service because Jimmy and Ben live in two different cities, Jimmy would lay down music and send it in the mail to Ben, Ben would record vocals and send them back to Jimmy. This is how the whole record was made, via the Postal Service. - merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Enough of this bickering, I'm over death cab anyways, give us a new Postal Service album already!
- DeadWisdom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, DCFC is not emo. A lot of people mis-term emo, because they don't know the subtleties of the differences in Alternative Rock. Look up "emo" on wikipedia.
There are too many people that don't know what the ***** they are talking about asserting their opinion on this story. They must have come from high school. - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Pretty cool, even Diggnation is being featured on the site! http://www.bittorrent.com/users/revision3/
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Shins are one of the best bands out there today. Great music.
- adamnikyo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3you're all wrong. none of you get to tell anyone if "Indie" is a genre or not. it's not up to you. it's up to the person saying it. they can use the word however they want. personally, i use "Indie" as genre all the time. go to allmusic.com for a more detailed description, but basically it's used to define a style of music with non-traditional vocals, arrangement, or lyrics. it no longer strictly means "independent" just as "pop" music isn't always "popular".
your 500 album collection is not impressive.
please come to the coachella.com message board for enlightening music discussion and to observe music snobbery at levels you did not know existed. we welcome you. - scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8@mywhitenoise
Actually...
If you really want to be picky, indie is considered a genre. With how many formerly independent bands take the jump to majors these days it is a term that can still classify their sound. Although, indie is a huge umbrella and that only opens up to more debates... - discobiscuit100, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ahhh, The Shins
Odd name, amazing band! - CUNTputer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Death Cab is still elite.
One day music snobs will get laid, and realize that music is music, and every person likes something else. - whitesnow158, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0http://mp3away.com/ag/drum-bass-gnr112/
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I really hope we aren't know for these bands. i don't think we should be known for poor taste.
- ka0tic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Emo band.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2YEAH! Western Washington is back on the charts as leading a rock revolution. Soon the world will know of Modest Mouse and Death Cab like they know Pearl Jam and Nirvana!
- DeadWisdom, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5There's a genre of music called "Indie", which DCfC is a part of. Also, your favorite band sucks more.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Now then, when they feature a GOOD band, i'll care.
- jkleinfeld, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6death cab - best band ever
although, quite annoying how they're always called emo
and even indie isn't quite accurate with Plans
i'd say their sound is 'alternative'
amazing stuff nonetheless - steveabb1, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7"death cab - best band ever"
You ***** dumbass... - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3so instead of selling out, they are now whoring themselves out.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6my favorite bands are New Order, Blur, Broken Social Scene, Radiohead, Talking Heads, and The Cure (as of right now). I own over 500 albums, so tell me Death Cab is better. Idiot.
and INDIE IS NOT A GENRE. I know music a hell of a lot more than you dumbass teens. Indie stands for 'Independent Artist'. If you're signed to a majro label, that defeats the tag. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Oh cool, The Postal Service - Angel Pumping Gas is a great song.
- Atlantics, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4It's BitTorrent... What isn't free on there?
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -37/+5Death Cab isn't 'indie', aren't they on Geffen Records? Also, they suck ass.

What is Digg?
