- captric, on 10/18/2007, -26/+3Songs are not a threat to national security - army field manuals containing directions on how to make IED's ARE and ESPECIALLY if they are in the possession of a Canadian. Was he going to the US to join the MARINES?!
- notque, on 10/18/2007, -0/+29... Please don't tell me we've chosen Canada as the next red scare. I enjoy maple syrup way too much.
- turpenine, on 10/18/2007, -6/+3we still have ohio for that.
- awtripp, on 10/18/2007, -7/+6actually Vermont makes the best maple syrup.
- thugok, on 10/18/2007, -1/+18You are right, anything found in 10 seconds on Google is definitely something that homeland security should be worried about.
- notque, on 10/18/2007, -0/+29... Please don't tell me we've chosen Canada as the next red scare. I enjoy maple syrup way too much.
- Shandooga, on 10/19/2007, -13/+43Americans have been selectively bred to sleep soundly through this kind of thing. There will be no waking up for America.
- captric, on 10/18/2007, -21/+3The only selective breeding going on in America is selective breeding for Science and Math Skills. Which require years of higher education and self discipline. Just the opposite from what is going on in Canada where pregnant mothers are smoking pot and turning out another generation of ARTISTS that will solidify Canada as a SECOND WORLD COUNTRY. Remember which way the BRAIN DRAIN is going, its going SOUTH to America where you can actually be rewarded for you talents. The last thing in the world that the US needs is more Anarchistic driven, drug addicted, pot smoking, undereducated, cigarette smoking loser musicians who contribute NOTHING to society except entertainment.
- RonBurgundy76, on 10/18/2007, -2/+3And what, praytell, have you contributed to society lately?
- jrizzo, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2Insulting artists, I can deal with. Insulting Canada, go for it. But messing with my favorite plant will get you killed.
...or stoned...- blahtastic, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Hehe, stoned. You made a pun :D
- Rikkochet, on 10/17/2007, -3/+2Er, no, the brain drain goes the same direction as the economy.
And now that your dollar's in the dumps, expect it to reverse.
(By the way, there's no such thing as a second world country, it was an intermediate classification used half a century ago and is obsolete now)
(Another by the way, who the ***** smokes when they're pregnant?)- Monk22, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3unfortunately i see many preggos smoking.
- AUmrysh, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2My sister. Thank god she isn't doing lines of cocaine during this pregnancy like she did the last one. I really do fear for her and anyone like her, and anyone associated with her. I know it's just a dream, but I hope some day we can all get along better and quit this stupid ***** we do with all the wars and selfishness, but utopia can never happen as long as capitalistic ideas flourish. Even Capitalism is getting ***** up now. The way I see it, the American government has failed us in so many ways, it is no longer legitimate, and must be replaced.
and in response to captrics comment, Death Cab for Cutie is actually one of the bands that would probably agree with most of the people here on DIGG when it comes to hating the way things are. - Racerx52, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1I think the real question is, Who DOESN'T smoke during pregnancy.... I mean this is 07...
- bigmike7, on 10/17/2007, -0/+0Captric's one of the last surviving of the Limbaugh wannabee species and should be left in peace. In his native habitat, you'll see him grooming/picking nits from Limbaugh's greasy *****.
- chrisgnv, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Captric, you're an ignorant jackass. Much like not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic, not everyone who smokes marijuana is a loser. Maybe one day you will look past stereotypes and think beyond the biases implanted in you during your childhood?
- tehpwnrate, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2Good thing you, Shandooga, can be the voice of reason with your amazing freedom from the harsh conspiracy to keep us plebians down. Enlighten me, please sir, before I become a drone of the fascist regime!
- captric, on 10/18/2007, -21/+3The only selective breeding going on in America is selective breeding for Science and Math Skills. Which require years of higher education and self discipline. - kh99, on 10/18/2007, -9/+13You didn't read the article, did you?
- Gonz037, on 10/18/2007, -9/+13I didn't but I just had to say thank you to homland security for taking care of that symphony of suck.
- kh99, on 10/18/2007, -2/+3I won't argue with that. But my point was exactly the same as revjustin2's - the headline sounds like they intended to confiscate the album, but they confiscated a hard drive without knowing what was on it. I'm sure the original commenter (Missy4truth) just read the headline, now people are showing up and digging up the comment that doesn't even make sense.
- centerblack, on 10/18/2007, -6/+15Yea, next time I go to the store, I'm just going to confiscate some steaks and beer. That will be ok right?
CONFISCATED = STEALING MADE LEGAL BY PEOPLE WITH MORE POWER THAN YOURSELF. - kh99, on 10/18/2007, -0/+5Um...moron...the point is that they didn't confiscate it because of the songs, as Missy4truth's comment implies. That comment was obviously made without reading the article, and people are digging it up without reading the article. I said nothing about whether they had a right to confiscate a hard drive.
- AUmrysh, on 10/18/2007, -2/+2Doesn't matter if you read it or not, any right they give you, they had to take away first. I, for one, think the Canucks should be allowed to bring hard drives into our country.
- kh99, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2But I think it does matter that (for the third time) people are digging up the comment that says "Songs are a threat to national security now?" when it's obvious that it isn't the songs that are the problem. If you're going to get all outraged by something, you could take the trouble to understand what the thing is. But I guess when the extent of people's action when outraged is to click the little thumb's up symbol next to someone else's comment after reading a total of three sentences, then you're right, it doesn't really matter.
- Gonz037, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1AND, at the end of the day, what did we learn? Death Cab for Cutie and their guitarist suck? Right?
- Gonz037, on 10/18/2007, -9/+13I didn't but I just had to say thank you to homland security for taking care of that symphony of suck.
- revjustin2, on 10/18/2007, -1/+22I doubt they even knew there were songs on the drive.
- AriaStar, on 10/18/2007, -4/+9Doesn't matter. It doesn't sound like they hard reason to confiscate the drive in the first place.
- alexforcefive, on 10/18/2007, -2/+6Well, if they didn't know what was on it, they certainly can't have known where it came from. So they DEFINITELY had no reason to confiscate it
- revjustin2, on 10/18/2007, -3/+2Maye the courier service is being monitored? It's not a real stretch to see why security people would be interested in potentially large amounts of data being brought into the US over the Canadian border. I am not defending what happened, I just think people didn't read the article.
- fjc8, on 10/18/2007, -0/+5Well, you see, they have these things called tubes that already cross the border. A series of 'em, actually. They transfer quite a lot of data... It's not like a big truck that they can stop at the border; if stuff gets lost before it reaches its destination, it's just sent again.
- goldfishey, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1the album title is 'field manual'. Is it possible that this title was somewhere on the paperwork that must have accompanied the hard drive? That would possibly raise red flags and prompt confiscation.
- AriaStar, on 10/18/2007, -4/+9Doesn't matter. It doesn't sound like they hard reason to confiscate the drive in the first place.
- geddon, on 10/18/2007, -8/+9This is the way it's going to work, people: The Red States will applaud that action was taken against Anti-American trash, while the Blue States shake their fists and wait until the next election. Anyone who steps out of line will be subsequently seized by Homeland Security.
- CoolWind, on 10/18/2007, -3/+4...and sent to Myanmar for questioning...
- AriaStar, on 10/18/2007, -5/+10Until the fall of the USSR, the government had complete control over everything, right down to children's cartoons. I think we're starting to slip in that general direction.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/18/2007, -2/+2Then you think wrong. You should look again at the true scope of USSR control and compare it to today's America. It's really nothing alike, at all.
- Urusai, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2Yes it is, except instead of the Communist Party we have a loose coalition of oligarchs.
- geddon, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1My God Man, it's a wonder how so many miss this point!
I Give Unto Thee The Diggs of My Children and Their Grandchildren To Your Comment.

- tehpwnrate, on 10/18/2007, -2/+2Then you think wrong. You should look again at the true scope of USSR control and compare it to today's America. It's really nothing alike, at all.
- worldsbestgamer, on 10/18/2007, -4/+5Of course Missy4truth didnt read the article.
I would also like to point out that I have never had an issue at the canadian border, and I go there pretty frequently. This guy was probably acting out or part of one of the totally random stops. They have random system that can get you stopped and checked even if you are a 85 year old woman.- damnasteroids, on 10/18/2007, -1/+4"acting out" by sending it via his record label's courier? apparently you didn't read the article, either.
- bigmike7, on 10/18/2007, -1/+4Who cares if they didn't even know songs were on it or whether this was just a random stop? Our Bill of Rights and our common sense tell us that some assholes calling themselves the government don't have the right to just stop us and seize our property for no good reason.
- mikelieman, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
- AliasHandler, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Bears repeating over and over again.

- UbIwerks, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Ha! I bought a 500 gig hard drive from Newegg a month ago. I live just across the border in canada, so to save on shipping I just bring it across from the states.
Customs spent about 10 minutes examining it and poking at the circuit board before giving it back to me. - puzzlesource, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7while songs generally aren't a threat to national security, I can't help but agree with Homeland Security on this one...emo songs are definitely the #1 threat to national security. Homeland Security is definitely getting it's ***** together
- Mike89, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Death Cab aren't emo though

- antispammer, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2You need to wake the hell up and realize that this is a ***** marketing technique. Stop being so damn gullible and believing the first thing you read on the internet!
- chyya, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2good riddance. the us of a did the right thing by confiscating his music. any song promoting freedom of speech and freedom in general is a threat to the american society and our freedom.
- J6stik, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Complaining on digg's really gonna help Americans "wake the hell up." Go ***** do something if you care so much.

- windmillninja, on 10/18/2007, -0/+6I didn't realize Bush was at the border when it happened.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/18/2007, -5/+4So if customs impounds a load of frickin Barbie dolls, the headline should be "US Government Oppression Ruins Christmas for Thousands of Innocent Children - Constitution Trampled Again".
And maybe we should all make signs and march around in a circle? You are retarded. RTFA. - Jaymoon, on 10/18/2007, -1/+1Stupidity is creeping its way in.. We need to stand up before its too late.. View the.. article submitted jgoldner. "Death Cab For Cutie Guitarist's Album Seized By Homeland Security"
Note how there is no metnion that it was seized because of the music... I'm sure authorities will give the excuse of a hard drive crossing border lines need to be inspected, but regardless, I don't know how you can get the point of the U.S. becoming a fascist country because a guy had his hard drive confiscated.- AliasHandler, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
It doesn't matter what reason it was confiscated, they need to present a warrant.- Jaymoon, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1...Except... for the fact that police didn't raid his house to confiscate the drive... It was taken at the Canadian border.
Meaning they probably gave him a choice when they said they had to take the drive. Either sit in Canada and not be able to cross back into the country, while waiting for the feds to "inspect" the drive... Or willfully hand it over and be able to cross back into the U.S.
But then again, nothing is EVER blown out of proportion here at digg.......

Google Ron Paul you losers, learn before you speak, else be a douche bag.- CatalystGhost, on 10/19/2007, -8/+15Dude. This is Digg. We've heard enough about Ron Paul's amazing powers of godliness to last us a long time. Seriously, we don't care. We're sick of him. Ok? You dumb *****, in your ridiculous and continuous posting of how godly it is when he takes a dump "for democracy", have probably ruined the chance at us actually getting a decent president. Great job.
- Monk22, on 10/19/2007, -5/+4no kidding at first i was interested but since these losers cant seem to STFU about him ill be voting against ron paul in all elections till i die.
- MonarchWastxD, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5Woo! A++ Post! Will read again!
- petewiz, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2"have probably ruined the chance at us actually getting a decent president." Of course the Ron Paul spammers are retarded, you aren't going to convince someone to vote for your candidate by posting his name repeatedly. But may I ask which of the other candidates candidates would make a decent president?
- impossibility, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Amen.
- mushoo, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1I searched to see to see Ron Paul's stance on impeachment bills and he hasn't sponsored any of them.
SO MUCH FOR YOU "CONSTITUTION LOVING Ron Paul."
If he really stood up for what you assholes claim, he would be leading impeachment proceedings and wouldn't be running as a RAPEUBLICAN.
Ron Paul is just an excuse for disillusioned Bush Rapeublicans to continue to vote for a Rapeublican, if he were a real Constitution-loving libertarian he would be running as one.

- Punisher2K, on 10/18/2007, -4/+3Hope they find him tap dancing in a bathroom stall.
- FrankThePigeon, on 10/22/2007, -12/+134WOW...i don't mean to sound like an ***** but it's a bit refreshing to see this happen in other places. Here in Egypt, artists and musicians getting harassed and censored by the gov is a norm, but I'm really surprised to see this happen on your end. Bizarre...
- Shandooga, on 10/18/2007, -6/+7It might seem strange now but get used to it, it's about to become the norm.
- Nevarwinter, on 10/18/2007, -15/+5Who was censored? They took the ***** hard drive. I guess they don't teach reading comprehension in egypy do they?
- r00ts, on 10/17/2007, -2/+9And I guess they don't teach spelling where you come from.
- sexybobo, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3There was no censorship going on the person that confiscated the hard drive most likely had no idea they were musicians especially since they are not extremely popular. They saw something that looked suspicious and confiscated it until they could figure out if it was anything threatening or not.
- xtc46, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1even if it was a huge band it wouldnt have mattered. they confiscated it from a corior
- isaactwito, on 10/18/2007, -2/+5It was sent to the computer/information department, they obviously knew what a harddrive was. Also DCFC is a very popular band. And, yes, this is censorship. They knew exactly what they were doing.
- ettin, on 10/18/2007, -1/+1Yeah, im sure all the homeland security offiicals sit around listening to teeny bopper music in their spare time.
There just a bunch of RIAA-made nobodies and will fizzle out like the rest of the pop creations. - juggadore, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1this is a reply to isaactwito. the guy is a really good song writer. I'm not sure if i'd call it teeny bopper music
- andrew7667, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2@ettin
DCFC only recently became popular. Most so-called DCFC "fans" have probably never heard of Photo Album, We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, You Can Play These Songs with Chords, or Something About Airplanes. Just because they recently went to a major label doesn't mean they've been playing commercialized crap for their entire careers. They were indie before indie was even a common word.
RIAA-made? I don't think so. Get your facts straight, moron.
- ettin, on 10/18/2007, -1/+1Yeah, im sure all the homeland security offiicals sit around listening to teeny bopper music in their spare time.

- captric, on 10/18/2007, -8/+0And you should be surprised... this is not the norm and the DHS or whomever Canadians claim to be responsible for seizing this bean heads hard drive have a good reason for doing so.we will find out what forensics finds on there and I hope this nut case Canadian Musician Wannabe gets barred from entering the US.
- bigmike7, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Nice little bootlicker.
- revjustin2, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3"Candian Musican Wannbe"? Death Cab for Cutie is actually from the US and they have kind of gone beyond wannabe status, Mr. Troll.
- andrew7667, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2DCFC was actually formed around Seattle. Chris lives in Oregon, and was born in Washington.

- jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -2/+14Death Cab for Cutie is about as mainstream as it gets, just don't let all the emo kids find out or they'll all start cutting again
- andrew7667, on 10/18/2007, -0/+7Death Cab wasn't always so mainstream. Most people have only heard Plans and maybe Transatlanticism. They've released four other albums apart from that.
Jargon, DCFC isn't emo. Not even close. Have you ever even listened to them?

- andrew7667, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2That was original. You want to make sure he doesn't cut himself too, or is that just a little too stereotypical for music you don't really understand?

- hove, on 10/17/2007, -3/+3How is the headline misleading? it's a story about Death Cab For Cutie Guitarist's Album being Seized By Homeland Security, so in my opinion the title "Death Cab For Cutie Guitarist's Album Seized By Homeland Security" is accurate.
- revjustin2, on 10/18/2007, -2/+8Good point. It's not like they raided his house and took his master tapes away based on content. They took a hard drive away from an international courier. I doubt they really knew what was on the hard drive.

- actorboy, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but come on, man. You have digitize something critical and you don't back it up on another hard drive? Especially when you know the first hard drive is going to be x-rayed, jostled by travel and have to pass an international customs inspection? - shotmonkey, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4It would clearly make much more sense for him to have put the songs on a cd (or dvd if they were raw high quality and wouldn't fit on a cd) or another form of removable storage for transport. Why not keep them on a laptop and take it with him? Alternatively, there's this thing called the internet. You can send files to yourself over it you know!
While this was clearly unexpected, i'm sure it could easily have been a non-issue.- KarateMedia, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4The raw tracks would take much more than a single CD (or even DVD, in many cases) could hold. Think about it this way - if he has a full CD's worth of songs (and more than likely he has more than that, if he hasn't whittled it down yet), he basically needs a CD-R for each and every instrument - the raw ryhthm guitar tracks could fill a whole CD, the same goes for an album's worth of raw drum tracks, etc -- two guitars, bass and drums would almost fill a DVD-R, at least. And that's assuming he's recording the files at a 44.1 Khz sampling rate (it could be higher - DAT uses a sampling rate of 48 Khz).
Multiple DVDs could have been used as a backup -- but he should have just backed the whole thing up to another hard drive. Even though he has the tapes, any tweaking, etc, he's done in ProTools is now lost.

- atb112, on 10/26/2007, -8/+30Freedom of speech? What's that?
- captric, on 10/18/2007, -4/+4Well - freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you want. If you yell fire in a theater or if you incite a riot those are all violations of and limits to free speech. In addition, your critics have free speech as well, if you say things that are outrageous than you can be criticized in public and that is free speech as well. In this case you have a CANADIAN - he is not an American - so he has no right to free speech in this country at all. If he doesn't like it than he can stay home and market his self described vile form of wacko artistic music in Canada.....all I can say is good luck with that plan. He and his backers know where you have to go if you want to sell records!
- bigmike7, on 10/17/2007, -0/+0If he was marketing his music here then he had an American distributor and that company has freedom of speech rights. And the artist has an American audience that wants to listen to it and that audience has freedom of speech rights. In the same way, we can't ban books that are written by foreign authors.
Another thing-- political statements are definitely protected free speech and are not akin to yelling "fire". Wake up and start thinking. Don't be a fascist. - andrew7667, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2He's actually from Washington and lives in Oregon.

5. Have hundred of thousands of people who never heard of you before buy your album to see what the fuss is about.
6. Profit.
I am not saying that is what happened but you have realize this guy is going to make a huge profit off this happening to him and you have to wonder if it is a publicity stunt. What artist would only have 1 digital copy of his up tomming cd especial since they sell there music on the internet you would think they would have a digital back up.- RonBurgundy76, on 10/18/2007, -2/+4You left out the ??? part.

Again i am not saying he lied. for all i know the government did confiscate the hard drive to censor his music but it doesn't take a genius to figure out he could be lying to cash in on the "bash the government" craze going on now.

- sexybobo, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Yes because it is impossible for him to take advantage of what is going on in our government for his personal gain. Like Alex Jones and the rest.
- bigmike7, on 10/18/2007, -1/+0Try this Bobo:
1. Put together a "suspicious looking" laptop
2. Ask a courier business to take laptop across border and ask them to tell the courier to try to look like a terrorist
3. When #2 fails (courier service hangs up on you), call up a different courier service
4. When #3 fails, go back to #2.
5. Go around and around with steps 2-4, or:
6) Realize that you don't really know that the laptop looked suspicious or that anything suspicious was going on at all and that if this band was so cynical and conniving and cared only about money that it would be much easier to just make hip-hop bubblegum and put a "z" in their name where there should be an "s". I think that's where the ??? come in. - goldfishey, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1doubt it. Ive read the artical, and all these comments, and I wont be going out and buying the guys album

The fact is, like most of us, he probably always meant to make a backup but never got around to it... That said, it's not like I'm planning on buying this guy's album anyway...

- MacGeekGuy, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately raw data from studio tapes does not make for a backup. If I were doing a graphic design spread and lost all of my work, even if I had my original source images still safe somewhere, all that work.... gone.... sucks. I feel for the guy, but yeah... he should have had a real backup. That's just silly.
- MattB123, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Not sure why I'm getting dug down, but whatever.
The WORK he put into mixing and mastering needed to be backed up. Even if the HD never left his studio, but even more so if it's going somewhere.
The tapes are like having a really old out-of-date backup. Better than nothing, but not as good as a current one.

"And while it really is a political record, it's also intensely personal, and it's not like, political in a way where I hope to change anyone's mind, because I've been doing my political-rock homework for a few years now, trying to decode what works and what doesn't," he continued. "Basically, it was my hope that I would be able to write a bunch of songs about the sh-- that I think about pretty much every day. But there aren't any character assassinations or indictments on the record. It's tricky to write a political record. It was tough to get to a place where I felt comfortable with the words coming out of my mouth."
...
"This is a solo record, which is a little bit scary, because there's a feeling of 'Oh, you're officially making a statement,' and you're either the fist-waving left or the flag-waving right, and there's no in between," he laughed. "But I made this record because it felt irresponsible for me to have a platform for what I'm thinking and not use it. And not just to do political songs. If all I wanted to do was cover Air Supply songs, I could've done that too."- bigmike7, on 10/17/2007, -1/+0"I'd be surprised if the HD was confiscated because of the album on it.... isn't that a bit of a leap given the info?"
It would be a big leap in a country that doesn't covertly eavesdrop on the Enemy.

- vammirato, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2yeah, at least he's got a good attitude about it!
- screwzluse, on 10/22/2007, -6/+11There's no proof there was no suspicion of wrong doing or anything. You have to take him on his word and assume it's true. What if the courier had actually forgotten his papers or something and just lied to the guy? There's also no proof it was over music and not something else. Come on, be annoyed over the government taking rights away but without proof of this wrong doing, it's just someone's word (which no one trusts anymore anyway). I'm not saying it didn't happen the way it was stated but it's all just words with no real evidence besides a supposedly missing hard drive.
- sexybobo, on 10/18/2007, -1/+4There is no proof the drive was even confiscated but people on digg don't need proof beyond some one saying something is true for them to believe it.
- revjustin2, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3That's true.
- bigmike7, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3How exactly DOES someone prove that their property was seized by a Department of Homeland Security that will not divulge its information on the grounds that that would be aiding the Enemy? Are we allowed to video tape our own interrogations now? Please tell us.
I fondly recall those idiot mothers in Argentina whose children were "supposedly" disappeared by the government. What a bunch of lying publicity hounds they were.

- facelesscoward, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2Death Cab isn't my favorite band, but they're pretty far from emo. In fact, they're rather pop-ish.
- CatalystDM, on 10/18/2007, -1/+1***** you
- curt082480, on 10/18/2007, -7/+1Seriously though, if your career is riding on data, maybe a backup would help? rsync/cron anyone?
- mrjit, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3My career depends on the ability to read, I'm shocked yours doesn't.
- curt082480, on 10/18/2007, -1/+0I did. He has TAPE backups, probably the original 2" analog (24 track) tape. What he lost was the pro tools project that inevitably had much more additional work already completed. The tape is not a backup of the hard drive.
- revjustin2, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2You assume he has done any mixing. Either way, if this were me, I'd be crying a LOT more if I lost the source tracks. You don't get a "do over" with those. The mixes and edits and be reproduced.
- namespecies, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2He actually uses RADAR...not Pro Tools. And if they took his RADAR drive...he's *****.

- faskill, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7What's with all the people yelling about "backup" over this? Do the interwebs not connect Canada and United States? l2ftp? Why didn't he just transfer the files to a storage site that costs at most 6$ a month if he was so concerned about the data? There are many storage solutions and storage backup solutions out there
- curt082480, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2What's with you assuming backup doesn't equal interwebs? No we didn't mean he should get a zip drive from 1994.
- Manbeast01, on 10/17/2007, -1/+1or a Flash Drive from 2007, but really I think the issue is due to RIAA craziness, I think his record label probably doesn't allow for digital transfer of final masters via the interwebs
- Christbait, on 10/18/2007, -12/+3I guess Homeland Security remove threats and any of this gay Death Cab For Cutie ***** is definitely a threat to my ears.
- Wargalas, on 10/18/2007, -10/+22All of you are throwing the word "fascist" around a lot lately. Do any of you actually know the meaning of the word?
- Calcipher, on 10/18/2007, -2/+6"You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means."
- MattB123, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4Inconceivable!
- scorpioX, on 10/18/2007, -2/+5"fascism -noun- an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization. • (in general use) extreme right-wing, authoritarian, or intolerant views or practice."
I'd say that describes the Bush Whitehouse to a T. - bigmike7, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7Yeah, we know what it means, but I suspect that you don't. It means a "tying together", like fascia, of both government and powerful economic interests. Both work together and rely on heavy propaganda or repressive laws or a combination of both to keep the citezenry in line. Fear over an outside enemy is used to justify all manner of civil rights abuses and to silence critics. An invented myth (the "volk"/family values) that heroicizes the common folk or values of the past becomes another rallying point. Every new fascist government will look different than those before it; the goal is not pamphlets, swastikas and mass rallies. Those were the means that were effective at a different time and place.
We don't need mass rallies now because people participate just by watching TV or listening to radio. There is no need to suspend the legislature so long as our representatives go along with the game and vote with the corporate overlords. Fascism can now be be more subtle and slick. So long as people don't question or revolt when travel and free speech and demonstrations are restricted there is no need to bring out the big guns.
When we finally say no to all this ***** and revolt that's when you'll see a brand of fascism you're more familiar with from the history books.- charlesray, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Yes, we already have a correct definition of fascism, we don't need an incorrect one also. Fascism is simply the idea that the state is greater than the individual. The side effects this has involve tying government with economics, yes, because the idea of having an individually owned business obviously doesn't sit well with the idea that the state is the ultimate. Our government is not fascist yet. We are not very far but we are still not that close. Fascism doesn't work when the government can say "put your nation above yourself!" and many still say "NO." That is the sound of fascism failing.
- Calcipher, on 10/18/2007, -2/+6"You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means."
- floatingpoints, on 10/17/2007, -9/+4Who?
- evo8ftw, on 10/18/2007, -8/+7Exactly what else was on the drive. They had to have given a reason they seized the drive. This article fails to say whether the other stuff the courier had was seized or just this drive. Why is Digg full of some many ignorant *****?
- ghindo, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3WELCOME TO DIGG
- mbelleghem, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Would someone who is so massively ignorant of US government policy and the discretion granted to customs and border security that they think reasons are provided at the time of seizure of suspect goods fall under your definition of an 'ignorant *****'?
- ChromaVita, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Kiddie porn...... BUT SERIOUSLY THEY STOLE THIS GUY'S MUSIC!!! THEY'RE CENSORING OUR ARTIST!!!
- Vodka2389, on 10/18/2007, -13/+4That's the gayest band name ever. I used to think it's "Death Camp for Cutie", which is marginally better.
- gr3yn3t, on 10/18/2007, -5/+6aww, I'm sorry you don't get it.
DCFC is lyrically genius bro. you, are not. - curt082480, on 10/18/2007, -8/+4the name is gay and the music is gay. Note how he wears a shirt and tie with a wool cap and girl hair.
- gotterdammerung, on 10/18/2007, -0/+9Note how he gets laid so much more than you do.
You're really gonna front about the band's name? Because 'curt092480' is an example of your own sparkling creativity?- curt082480, on 10/18/2007, -5/+1Because I am marketing myself ?
- Monk22, on 10/18/2007, -3/+2becuase finding a slut is so difficult.

- mywhitenoise, on 10/18/2007, -5/+2they're a really lame band, but the name is cool...I think it comes from an Elvis Costello song.
- gr3yn3t, on 10/18/2007, -5/+6aww, I'm sorry you don't get it.
- waz67, on 10/20/2007, -4/+22Jeeez there are a lot of conclusions being drawn here without much detail.
1) it was a hard drive being sent via courier, which in itself is a bit odd. Why didn't he just bring it with him in the first place?
2) TFA talks about the album being named "Field Manual" and references stuff about bomb-making. It doesn't say if anything related to that was included with the drive, but if it was, then would anyone be surprised that it got picked up?
3) You're a musician, and not only do you not have backups but you send your master copy on hard drive via courier? Jeeesus, if the border patrol doesn't get it, the courier company will be happy to destroy it for you.- kubedawg, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3If the hard drive contained a song that could potentially make millions of dollars, I'd want to keep it hidden until it was released. Maybe he's just not good at hiding things...
- TitanX13, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2then he has bigger problems.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/18/2007, -1/+1Agreed. Diggers will find any reason to call the US a fascist state.
- barc0001, on 10/18/2007, -2/+88Wow. He can't get his files on a hard drive across the border. If only there was some planet-wide computing network upon which files could be transferred...
- evo8ftw, on 10/17/2007, -2/+1if only , if only
- mbelleghem, on 10/18/2007, -2/+4This was an album on its was to be mastered. Even if its only eight submixed tracks for an hour-long album, at 24 bit / 192khz (which is 66gb/min), we're talking about filling up a 500gb hard drive. I think most would agree that - at least within the same continent - an overnight courier of a physical storage medium is still the best option for data past the tens of gigs.
- Oasisguy, on 10/22/2007, -14/+12This. Is. Advertising. And on the front page of Digg. Nice work, really well done. : (
- beargrylls, on 10/18/2007, -5/+2Yeah, because Death Cab is such an obscure band... Good call, idiot.
- xtc46, on 10/18/2007, -1/+4They aren't a huge band. Getting 10k+ more people to know your name is a pretty big deal.
- ChromaVita, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Also isn't it a solo album?
- beargrylls, on 10/18/2007, -5/+2Yeah, because Death Cab is such an obscure band... Good call, idiot.
- Nevarwinter, on 11/03/2007, -8/+6OMGZ HS r teh nazieees! What a bunch of overblown nincompoopery.
- bsmeteronhigh, on 10/18/2007, -7/+9Artist wants to get his new release noticed. Instead of transferring files via ftp he packs it on a hard drive with a label that reads: "Field Manual" and no doubt the label looks like something the military would make..."cause wouldn't that be cool". And now he surprised that maybe they want to see what's on the thing? No doubt he also included instructions for making IED's in the liner notes because, "they look cool", too.
Well, we all now know he has a solo effort in the works and I'm sure we'll all rush out to plunk down our hard earned dollars.- mbelleghem, on 10/18/2007, -2/+1I like how you base your conclusions on such solid evidence. Unmastered albums in uncompressed high-resolution digital formats are often too big for FTP (ie tens or hundreds of gigabytes). Here's a random question with no supporting evidence: are you a Fox News fan?
- Rambeezle, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Death Cab for Cutie are a bunch of media whores. Thank you for calling them out. To think that so many people here could be duped by idiot emo demagogues.

You have a right to shoot up schools?! Lay off the drugs!! Nazi America?! Do you know anything about the Nazis or just the shape of their symbol?! Corporostocracy? Did you just invent that term and what does that mean? Everything have including the computer you are using and the electricity you are wasting are the result of corporate business models you idiot.
- bigmike7, on 10/18/2007, -1/+0So he invented a term (corporastocracy). Just shows that the public education didn't crush every last bit of inventiveness and turn him into a fascist bootlicker.
