- mikeman10001, on 10/12/2007, -10/+64I wonder how many people now have vision problems.
- timjbart, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56Wow that is blinding....literally
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47never say "newsflash" again.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36God, the irony is killing me inside.
The Flaming Lips are one of the best working band these days, and have been for 20 years. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38I'd have brought one of the high-powered green ones and tried to pop the balloon.
- Catchpen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36@ pants428 - Change that to a "typical" laser pointer. I guess you haven't visited www.wickedlasers.com Mine will burn your eyeballs out with your eyes shut
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30It would have looked a lot cooler with more smoke in the air so you could see the beams more.
But still pretty awesome. - Shabadoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21You'll shoot your eye out, kid.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Rock music will make you go blind. fact!
- JED9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21the flaming lips are so creative and amazing, they have done some crazy stuff, like zaireeka, the 4 disk album that you play each disk at the same time and their parking lot experiments and Wayne's bubble thing that he surfs the crowd in.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Newsflash - Hundreds of them just *might* have a more significant effect, should you be unlucky enough to turn around at the wrong moment.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23if you could rule the world with flick of a switch, would you do it?

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17ahh, It's not AMAZING, but it is pretty cool.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23I have a tshirt that says
I Shot My Eye Out
Being a Laser Light Show
For the Flaming Lips
Also, I get free concert tickets when they come to town. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25laser pointers do not really have enough power to permanently damage your vision... google it or something...
- gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Being blinded is the least of your worries when you're having a seizure :)
- rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14How hard is it to get a shark with a friggin laser beam attached to its head?
- cbasst, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16This band is the best live band Evar.
- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@nreynolds
Such as... - muvment256, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12That has liability written all over it.
As far as laser pointers causing damage... A laser of approx. 5 mw is enough to render a person legally blind. Most laser pointers claim to be at approx 5mw but its usually a flat out lie in power output. They usually never peak past 3mw. However, that is still enough to do retina damage. I would have been pissed if i was there (after working in the laser lighting industry for year, i've discovered that even laser splatter can cause serious problems (laser splatter - area around an unfocused beam). - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeh, that's Jesus alright. I recognize him from my french toast.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9what if it was a disco beach ball!?
- forseti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's also worth pointing out the band is from Oklahoma City.
- singlewall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Seriously, "newsflash" is as bad as people who say "ummm, hello" when trying to make a point. Dont believe me...check out that Jesus Camp movie that was posted earlier for some prime examples.
- Stong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In this vid they shoot wayne holding a mirror. It creates a huge beam of light...pretty cool stuff.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=emgjmxv7oPE - Tenetri, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10so blinding, you can almost taste the ecstasy
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12not the blue ones...ask sony
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10So what if it's easy to duplicate? Doesn't stop it from being a brilliant idea that looks absolutely fantastic
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The people trying to take pictures of that using flash photography should just lose the right to even use cameras.
- grinin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll settle for really angry sea bass
- slapshot24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Except that they apparently did it at the NYC show as well, with the t-shirt to prove it.
- thebrokenlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At Hammerstein, Wayne Coyne made the entire audience shine their laser pointers at a gigantic mirror as he lifted it up during "Vein of Stars." And there was lots and lots of smoke. It was a sight I'll never forget.
- kman004, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5While pausing the video, a figure appeared. I think it may be Jesus... Check it out.
http://www.customfootballshop.com/images/lazer.png - gumby05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've never been as happy as when i saw them at Lollapalooza this past year. The bubble went over me. It was incredible!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4frLhgF0YQ4 - SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Laser pointers used to be very expensive back in the 90s. Are they cheap now?
- apolloandi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3would have been cool with a bunch of different colors
or if they would have given different colors to different areas and had the people with (insert color here) shoot at the same time - CausticCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My daughter, who is a fan, tells me that Cartoon Network already uses the "With all your power" parts in an ad for the Power Puff Girls.
- Legionnaire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Zaireeka, while a great idea on paper, isn't actually a very good album. I recommend getting the 5.1 surround sound mixes they make of their albums. They sound great.
- prator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Yeah, that's just you.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really really cool. The Flaming Lips may be a bit hit or miss when it comes to their music, but I would love to go to one of their live shows
- CarpeFishem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Flaming Lips need to become an Internet fad.
- glycolized, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3glowsticks? go away ravers.
- Catchpen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35. To be flagged by one of Diggs algorithms
- whisk3rs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I imagined those two people to be Dick Cheney and Paris Hilton and this excellent music video somehow became even better!
- hambend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can get them here in New Zealand at $2 a pop. Non-red can be a lot more expensive...
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/lights/896a/ - drjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have seen tons and tons of bands over almost 20 years and the recent lips show I saw was in the top 5, number one for pure fun! And we were in the front row & got to touch the bubble yeeee-haw! No laser pointers, however lots of other toys.
To the safety snarks: Sometimes the world outside your computer room can be dangerous. - one1plus1one, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3muvment256 is correct:
One of the distinguishing characteristics of a LASER is that it retains nearly all of its original photonic energy, carried in a narrow focused beam-vector, over long distances. There is very little energy loss over distance.
What this means is that a discount toy 3mw laser pointer CAN and WILL without a doubt cause damage to your retina each time you take a direct hit. Not only can it cause damage through a direct hit, but reflections from mirrors, shiny metalic surfaces, and even white surfaces will likewise damage your retina.
Having said this, this was still a freaking cool video to watch. I definately bookmarked this one. However, I'm just glad my own eye balls and retinas weren't there live to take a direct hit. -
