- andyd273, on 08/29/2009, -15/+356This is how you get someone to buy a CD instead of pirating!
RIAA, take note. It only takes a little creativity to add enough value to make it worth the money. - twiztidsinz, on 08/29/2009, -9/+288Cool... but not $50 cool.
- doctechnical, on 08/29/2009, -7/+106Upside: I LOVE the idea of making the packaging something interactive and interesting rather that something to toss into a landfill! YES!
Downside: Alright, I admit it, I'm a synth snob (I'm sitting within a foot of an Arp Odyssey). The tone on this thing sounds like a cheap toy (which it is, essentially) and listening to this for 15 minutes I think I'd be ready to take an ice pick to my ear drums.
Minor quibble: A real theremin uses RF, not light. But that really is minor.
Want to see more of this sort of thing, want to hear better sounds :) - CbME, on 08/29/2009, -13/+94To all the folks leaving back-handed compliments:
This is *****' sick and original... stop hating - Thesoundmachine, on 08/29/2009, -3/+74I hate to be the one to say, but that's not a theremin. Instrument played without touching =/= a theremin.
- DaviDTC, on 08/30/2009, -1/+70wtf you're disagreeing with yourself?
- KarmaPoIice, on 08/30/2009, -3/+44lol this dude is on some serious ***** drugs
- HamSandwich, on 08/29/2009, -2/+42Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Maybe $30, but no more.
- hdberk, on 08/29/2009, -1/+39That's actually not a theremin, but it's damn close. What they are showing uses light responsive components that change pitch based on the amount of light. You can make one for under $5 with a basic knowledge of circuitry and a soldering kit. Theremins are very expensive and don't require any amount of light to be played. Nevertheless, a very cool idea to put it in a CD case.
- jammyfred, on 08/29/2009, -4/+39Good idea, and certainly original. I like that he encourages us to 'share it with friends'.
Oh. almost forgot, ***** THE RIAA. - DaviDTC, on 08/29/2009, -5/+36I really don't think anyone is going to go buy a cd case for $50, let alone more than one. This one makes different sounds, costs another $50. People already have a hard time paying $10-$20 for all the songs on a cd.
- Skurt, on 08/29/2009, -0/+25Cool case, but the article? Stolen from;

Next time use the link in the blogspam instead of the blogspam... - DLPizzle, on 08/30/2009, -0/+22wat?
- Oltimega, on 08/30/2009, -0/+20He is agreeing with himself in a disagreeing sort of way.
- bjstiktrix, on 08/29/2009, -3/+23I'll digg anything with a Theremin in it.
- Artemis3, on 08/29/2009, -0/+18How about 25$?
http://www.amazon.com/Theremin-Optical-Sensor-Sci- ... - jarjarwang, on 08/29/2009, -4/+22I like it when people do things.
- jeriqo, on 08/29/2009, -3/+20So you're saying packaging is more important than content.
I personnally think it is SAD that the only way to sell is to offer something that cannot be downloaded.
Then pirates are saying they download because the quality of music majors offer is bad... the irony. - Thesoundmachine, on 08/29/2009, -6/+22Um, no not at all actually. As a avid theremin player, I would definitely be inclined to disagree with your statement. Just because you play it without touching it doesn't make it a theremin. You could call it a theremin, but you'd be wrong to do so.
- kentifer, on 08/29/2009, -0/+16He also offers the same CD for $10 without the Theremin.
- SuicideMouse, on 08/30/2009, -0/+15He's disagreeing with himself only because he failed to comprehend himself.
- Rain12913, on 08/30/2009, -0/+14I'm not gonna lie, I'd like to see more weird ***** like this on Digg. Keeps it interesting.
- calibud, on 08/29/2009, -1/+15Super Mario Bros. on the Theremin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcTPRjiCs6s - inactive, on 08/29/2009, -5/+18how many ppl gonna say this is not a theremin? ***** off losers.
- doti, on 08/29/2009, -4/+15I read the whole article, still have no idea what a theremin is.
- GamerXR72, on 08/29/2009, -1/+12ಠ_ಠ
- wozup, on 08/30/2009, -0/+11let's just agree to disagree on agreeing.
- twiztidsinz, on 08/29/2009, -4/+15http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin http://www.google.com/search?q=theremin Was that hard?
- twiztidsinz, on 08/29/2009, -3/+13It's not an article on theremins...
It's an article on a cool CD case. - mu0p, on 08/29/2009, -2/+11A similar idea to the 1-bit music project, except the one bit music project was 5 years earlier, and much cooler. It doesn't need a cd, because the music is 1bit and fully contained in the electronics inside the cd case. This is cool and everything, but give credit where credit is due.

Additionally, i got a similar synth to the simple synthesizer used in Moldover's project, but mine was free (and i got to build it myself) at a machine project workshop here in LA:
http://www.machineproject.com - PeaceShot, on 08/30/2009, -1/+10RIAA: "Don't share with friends! :("
Moldover: "Share with friends! :)"
So yes, ***** the RIAA. - ukblacknight, on 08/29/2009, -0/+9Neither did I. But watch the video, gives it away really.
- Peynis, on 08/30/2009, -2/+10As important as an adequate packaging for a great album might be, do you really believe that poor cover designs are the reason why people stopped buying (which is NOT to be confused with "started pirating") stuff from major labels?
Thanks to the internet and websites like Last.FM and discogs, people are now not limited to the broadcasting media anymore when it comes to discovering new music (if there's even such a thing as "discovering" a Sony BMG release)....Thanks to onlineshopping, people are not limited to purchasing albums at the mall, and even the smallest labels (which can be from a single person to pretty much anything) can now distribute their releases themselves, which also generates a lot more profit for them, while staying under the radar of pretty much anyone doing any kind of music sales statistics. Thanks to the discogs marketplace, ebay, GEMM etc., people can obtain releases that've been out of print for months, years or decades with relative ease.
To cut my theory short, I believe that today's western people are actually listening to music they like instead of music they are being spoon-fed by the majors, which means that basically almost the same amount of cash people have been spending on music all along is still being spent on music, but the money now goes to actual musicians and labels that care for music, or small merchants who simply provide the music, instead of, you know, companies whose only maxim is profit. Funny how those companies NEVER, EVER questioned the quality of their products or "service", and instead proceeded to accuse their customers of piracy right away. Why do people still even mention them? - DaviDTC, on 08/29/2009, -0/+8Or it was a hungry homeless guy.
- smoothmonka, on 08/30/2009, -0/+8im willing to go as high as 49.99 not more not less. i bid you good day sir
- ZombieSociety, on 08/29/2009, -2/+10It's not like you're going to get a theremin for $50 anywhere else.
- CarGuy, on 08/29/2009, -1/+8That's pretty rad
- jetfuel, on 08/29/2009, -1/+8Theremins are cool as hell. I saw Devotchka play one live, seems hard to play it in the key you're playing the rest of your music in.
- jig5aw, on 08/30/2009, -1/+8It's actually more of a theremin emulator using simple light sensors, and hence its significantly lower price than a real Moog theremin.
- EnTaroTassadar, on 08/30/2009, -0/+6So how do I download one?
- MAARRS, on 08/29/2009, -9/+15This is not a Theremn, It's a douchbag fart machine.
- kinseyincanada, on 08/30/2009, -2/+8***** that i would buy this cd for 50
- inactive, on 08/30/2009, -3/+9It's "not practical at $50" because you think the album is free, right? And it's only the theremin you're paying for, right?
Cheap bastards. This isn't some mass-produced sweatshop-built crap, this is an artist's work. You know, the artists who you all say you'd love to support and buy things from if only they'd put more effort into the packaging and collectability of their work.
Face it, you don't want to pay musicians and artists a cent for anything they do. It it was $10 you'd say it should be free. Just admit it. - JonTheGoose, on 08/30/2009, -0/+6Sooo.....is the album any good?
- SavageIndustrie, on 08/29/2009, -1/+7Explains what a Theremin is. This is way cooler than that stupid little tone generator.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd4jvtAr8JM - kentifer, on 08/29/2009, -0/+6There's a smaller one for $25.
http://moldover.com/buy.html - sageerrant, on 08/30/2009, -2/+8But... it's not a theremin.
Just a really neat case. - llamaspit, on 08/30/2009, -2/+7Oh man, you're obviously young. It's ALWAYS been about packaging. Kiss was my earliest influence, and they were all about packaging - from their makeup to the actual albums to their comic book to the huge volume of merchandising, that continues to this day. Have you ever tried to listen to a Kiss album?
Even good bands did it back in the vinyl days. Led Zeppelin had multiple albums with interactive covers, and The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers is a great example. Many put posters inside, released on different colored vinyl, and we have a pretty good collection of picture disks.
And it wasn't limited to just the albums. Most huge pop or rock acts from the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s had some sort of gimmick. Kiss wore makeup and had wild costumes. Sex Pistols, well, you know. Even The Beatles relied on gimmicks, and changed them all the time.
It wasn't until CDs came along and grunge, with its minimalist image became huge that cool gimmicks to make you want to buy albums was abandoned, and I, for one, have missed that. - shanealeslie, on 08/29/2009, -0/+5I might buy it just for the theramin, my daughter would love it (and my wife would hate me for it).
- Th3R3dFly, on 08/30/2009, -0/+4Have you heard some of the "content" released recently? It's AMAZING! AND I can just download it for FREE! Why buy a CD? Are you sure people download music because the quality is bad? It's to give people more incentive to support an artist and buy something that they could otherwise get for free. You can't expect everyone to pay for just a download when thier bittorrent client sits right next to their iTunes.
