- endustry, on 09/17/2009, -4/+75I wonder if Nickelback has considered suing themselves on similar grounds.
- mrMunchies, on 09/16/2009, -9/+50So much music out there that some of it is bound to sound similar
- guanyin, on 09/16/2009, -1/+39 They were probably "Under Pressure" like Vanilla Ice.
- AmusedToDeath, on 09/17/2009, -0/+29Why does it make him less cool? Satch has been a working musician for 25 years, released a dozen or so albums and tours constantly. I don't think he's desperate for money or fame. It seemed to me that he genuinely believed that the two songs sounded a little too similar. And quite frankly, they did. So whether it was intentional or not on the part of Coldplay, he had a pretty good case and a perfectly legitimate reason for pursuing it.
- bigsheldy, on 09/17/2009, -24/+46Coldplay is Radiohead for stupid people.
- ak666jk, on 09/17/2009, -3/+24They can develop independently, it's not impossible...
- ianmgull, on 09/16/2009, -0/+21The same reason George Harrison did way back when. Satch doesn't legally have to prove that Coldplay purposely ripped him off, just that he published the song with the melody (and progression) first. Any songwriter will tell you that this sometimes happens. Many songwriters always say that "a good idea always sounds kind of familiar", this is probably why.
- ManUnitdFan, on 09/16/2009, -0/+20Because it's not worth the headache or legal costs, both of which would be ample if this lawsuit dragged on for a while.
- Zwhaler, on 09/17/2009, -1/+20Bah! I retract my statement. Both of the artists copied Los Enanitos Verdes! Take a listen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znrHzefl8cM&fea ...
AHHH check this out all of them copied Cat Stevens!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVruURaUqOw&fea ... - whatthefu, on 09/17/2009, -2/+20They sound the same. There is coincidence and there is plagiarism. They could have taken it and altered it a bit (they didn't).
- geckron2, on 09/17/2009, -11/+28***** Coldplay. Satch rules the world.
- TugOSpiegel, on 09/17/2009, -1/+18Nice to know the case is finished, but talk about your biased articles.
- TalahRama, on 09/17/2009, -0/+16I speculate HTML can't be used in comments.
- jmferris, on 09/17/2009, -7/+21I don't care how much music Coldplay comes out with over their "lifespan" - they are not going to produce the musical prowess of Satriani in any other way than lifting riffs. When I was in college, Satriani was covered in my music theory classes with the great classical composers. He *is* that good.
- absentmindedjwc, on 09/16/2009, -0/+13from a musicians perspective... it would have been possible to write this song without ever hearing Satriani's song. When chords and progressions sound good together, they sound good together.... and the better they sound, the more likely you are to hear them used in different songs.
- xtc46, on 09/17/2009, -2/+15the real solution would be to take satch on tour so he can make that song sound epic.
- Zwhaler, on 09/17/2009, -17/+29Anyone with half of a musical brain knows that Coldplay took Satriani's idea. Perhaps the steal was unintentional, maybe the tune served only as an inspiration to Viva La Vida... but regardless there is no denying that one stemmed from the other.
- jamesc7, on 09/16/2009, -6/+17Why would you settle the case if you know your not wrong and give Satch the loot?
- XISUPERMANIX, on 09/17/2009, -0/+11Can we stop this whole Coldplay-Radiohead *****? Seriously, who gives a ***** what other people listen to? Unless they are blasting it out everywhere, it shouldn't matter what you listen to. It's pretty lame to insult someone on what they listen to. Hell there could be a very intelligent person that thinks any other music besides classical is for stupid barbarians. I know plenty of people who like both, so are they half stupid? I am a fan of both too. They both have great songs and some not so great songs.
- Travelsonic, on 09/17/2009, -0/+10Ultra, I don't need to guess that you are an idiot.
- zerozed, on 09/17/2009, -4/+13If you haven't heard the two songs played back to back you shouldn't speculate that it was an "innocent" mistake. It's pretty clear that Coldplay lifted the tune. As to George Harrison's settlement for "My Sweet Lord" ripping off "He's So Fine," no matter how much I like George Harrison, that riff was (probably unconsciously) lifted too.
- praisethelard, on 09/16/2009, -1/+9Well, there are not an infinite amount of chord progressions that sound good together and fewer melodic lines that sound good with said progressions, so, yeah.
- alexkim804, on 09/17/2009, -0/+8here's a comparison http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvB9Pj9Znsw&fea ...
- treas, on 09/17/2009, -0/+7I have owned many apples in my lifetime, but I seem to always end up eating them.
- DanS29, on 09/17/2009, -7/+14Coldplay, more like...Coldplagerism.
- hoochiscrazy, on 09/16/2009, -5/+12They sound identical, this surprises me. I guess I can go back to "kind of" liking Coldplay again...
- jmferris, on 09/17/2009, -1/+7From the "article": If anyone should know this, it’s Satriani who seems to be writing the same songs over and over again since “The Extremist“.
Written like someone who has heard Summer Song on a Sony commercial and not listened to anything else. - AlienMushroom, on 09/17/2009, -2/+8I'd feel bad for Coldplay if it was the first time they tried the stunt.
- Vodd9, on 09/17/2009, -2/+8Similar?
This is a copy-paste. Even Coldplay knew that Joe would have won in court otherwise they wouldn't have settled. Stop looking for excuses. - Golarian, on 09/17/2009, -2/+7Just because someone has found joy in Coldplay's music doesn't mean they are lacking intelligence. Nor does it imply they ignore Radiohead.
- praisethelard, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5My desktop is Windows-based, if that was what you were trying to infer. Though, your statement was a bit vague and could refer to my iPod, in which case you'd be correct, I guess.
- YKKonMyZipper, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5Here is a break down of the two song with music theory.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEGGFJLpbu4&fea ... - CrimsonIdol, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5Would have been funnier had you added "amirite" at the end.
- ator1, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5And an extra "dun".
- AndrewDB, on 09/17/2009, -1/+5You can't be that ***** ignorant of Satriani ... can you?
The Satch has been nominated for 15 Grammy awards.
More than any musician in the instrumental category.. - deweyhewson, on 09/17/2009, -2/+6I'm a Coldplay fan and a Radiohead fan, and as someone quite familiar with both band's music, allow me to alter your statement somewhat.
"Radiohead is Coldplay for pretentious people."
It's always a tad humorous when people are egotistical about other people's art. - freakFlag, on 09/17/2009, -0/+4Vanilla Ice added more cymbal.
- PainToad, on 09/17/2009, -3/+6Everything sounds like Coldplay since it's so generic soft rock.
- elpierce, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Lifting a section of a song and using it briefly during your song is fine. That's sampling. But lifting a section of a song and using it as a loop without permission, like Vanilla Ice did, or outright lifting an entire musical phrase without permission, like Coldplay did, is frowned upon by other musicians and is sometimes completely illegal.
- badtzmartin, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3@4321234: "Dismissed with prejudice" does NOT mean that it was "thrown out". It means the parties came to an out-of-court settlement, and asked the judge to dismiss the case.
- TheCollective00, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Chris Martin himself said that his band is a pale imitation of Radiohead. In his own words:
"I think if you imagine Radiohead going through a jungle clearing a path, then we're the ones who are probably just criminally paving it. I always see Radiohead as the braver people."
“Sometimes I feel like they (Radiohead) cleared a path with a machete, and we came afterward and put up a strip mall.”
Newsweek had an interview with Coldplay where Chris Martin admits he winced when Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, one of his heroes, labeled Coldplay “lifestyle music” — a dig at the band’s universality in films, stores, airports and Mom’s iPod.
Chris Martin: “We’re like an eager dog just yapping around their heels, and they’re trying to kick us [...]
"Ah, man, it’s tricky. I don’t think we’d be anywhere if Radiohead didn’t exist. I think we’re like why Diet Coke was big. Because some people couldn’t handle Coke. That’s how i see Coldplay." - Chris Martin
And all this from CHRIS MARTIN'S OWN ***** MOUTH, PEOPLE. So next time somebody says Coldplay is Radiohead-lite or some similar assessment, and you feel an urge to disagree with them, just keep your ***** mouth shut, because EVEN CHRIS MARTIN AGREES. - worldstoaster, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3it's just you
- bigsheldy, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3^^^^ dugg so hard i broke my mouse
- CanadianSixPack, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Never forget! Nickelback sucks!
- superterrorizer, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3I don't think it would have been possible at all. Granted, the chord progression, I'll give you that. However, the overall tonality and emotional resonance of the song was what the big deal was. As a musician, it annoys me that everyone thinks this is all over chord progression? That's only half the story.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJWLfpOecyE&fea ... - basichuman, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3No need to speculate. Jesus totally rode a T-Rex.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_yctQJTi4C7E/ScfssKO9oHI/ ... - inactive, on 09/17/2009, -3/+6FTA: "It’s doubtful but even if Coldplay does listen to Satriani, anyone who writes music knows that some things can come out on a subconscious level without you having a clue."
Why is it doubtful? It's laughable that the author thinks he can get away with a stupid statement like that. I would call it 'likely that they heard Satriani's piece'. - schavira, on 09/17/2009, -1/+4What a terrible article. It's filed under news yet it's riddled with opinion. Does no one care for the ethics of journalism anymore? Also, defending Coldplay, come on now...
- OUberLord, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Him being an intermediate guitarist doesn't make him any less of an expert at being correct in this case. The two songs are simply way too similar to be completely accidental.
- Rain12913, on 09/17/2009, -1/+4Wait a second...did you just call "If I Could Fly" by Satriani "niche progressive rock"? Please tell me you're joking. The song is in basic 4/4 and uses chord progressions that Coldplay uses. Just listen to the song, it's ***** easy listening rock.
