- Twenty, on 07/06/2009, -2/+33Well, the argument is that vinyl doesn't go through analog-to-digial conversion and then back, but of course all new vinyl does because everything is recorded digitally. However, I recently did get a new release on vinyl and played it on a borrowed turntable. For me it's not the sound quality at this point, the experience of holding the medium which contained physical sound waves and playing it over a delicate, precise turntable that turns solid into sound was fantastic. I mean, mp3's are trivial. You can delete them and copy them and whatever. But vinyl is so much more "special" than even CDs. That said, I grew up with CDs and love the liner notes.
- jaromir68, on 07/06/2009, -1/+28This new Cheap Trick 8-track costs $30!!
Hopefully Columbia House will let me get this free plus 5 more for only one penny. - jeffgtr, on 07/06/2009, -1/+27As someone who actually once had an 8 track in his car (Craig Powerplay) I can tell you they were HORRIBLE. Some of the tapes would switch tracks mid song. They didn't last long either. It wasn't uncommon to see tape strung out on the side of the highway from an 8 track that bit the dust. They were practically impossible to repair. The worst idea ever. It is kinda cool that Cheap Trick did this though. They were in their hay day in the age of the 8-track. Everyone had Cheap Trick, Aerosmith and Led Zepellin tapes in their cars, well not everyone, some sad folks had Air Supply and Bee Gees.
- WeirdEdsel, on 07/06/2009, -1/+218-Tracks were, and still are, a terrible format.
- Chewie67, on 07/06/2009, -8/+27Anyone who doesn't appreciate Cheap Trick doesn't know a damned thing about music.
- freezerburn666, on 07/06/2009, -7/+26don't you dare try to ***** tell me that the sound quality is better than todays standards like every goddamn vinyl lover who claims every hiss, crackle and pop from defects on their vinyl from decades and decades ago is what makes it sounds good....
- fearthefin, on 07/06/2009, -1/+11The comment, "When is it being released on a wax cylinder?" made me laugh like hell.
- TheWorm, on 07/06/2009, -3/+13Those damned hipsters!
- kingnova, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8Star rider rider....... *silence*... KA CHUNK... Rider. Take me to the stars.
Foreigner on 8 track flashback... - inactive, on 07/06/2009, -1/+8How many people own an 8-track player?
- solid12345, on 07/06/2009, -0/+7The vinyl was better because the engineers didn't blast the goddamn volume up 5 decibels to compete in a loudness war.
- MasterGrief, on 07/06/2009, -0/+7Even better when you consider that laser-based record players exist now-- you can play the vinyl as many times as you want, and it'll never lose a bit of quality.
Of course, the players are ridiculously expensive right now, but I expect prices will eventually get to the sub-thousand dollar level, heh. - freezerburn666, on 07/06/2009, -1/+8vinyl reminds me of my early childhood, plus it sounds like *****. i never liked the whole album art cover bs anyways, i think the music should speak for itself.
- andreo, on 07/06/2009, -0/+6mommy's alright
daddy's alright
they just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender...
I'm syncing it back to my phone as we speak. - sjbdallas, on 07/05/2009, -6/+12Kind of neat but for my money, vinyl records still offer the best experience in my opinion.
- ReDoEr, on 07/06/2009, -0/+6Amen. '71 Ford with an 8-track was one of my first cars. Did you have one of those "adapter cartridges" that would let you play cassettes in the 8-track deck? Brings back (crappy) memories.
- diggduggjoe, on 07/06/2009, -0/+5Oh man! I forgot that sound. You tend to remember the songs as you heard them on the radio. The track change was a KA CHUINK type of sound. The young diggers have no clue how lucky they have it with technology.
- JoeVet, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6Is it going to be quadraphonic? Damn that was such a long time ago.
- artgon, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6"Illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money..."
-GOB Bluth - cran, on 07/06/2009, -1/+5Cheap Trick, for the uninitiated, has always had something of a tongue-in-cheek bit of humor going on in the background.
- BREZZZ, on 07/06/2009, -1/+5I'M FROM THE FUTURE TOO
THIS GUY LIVED NEXT TO ME. HE IS CRAZY
I FOLLOWED HIM HERE TO STOP HIM FROM
PESTERING PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET - thinking2loud, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4Not sure about the 8-track. But they totally rock massively, and they don't take themselves too seriously. One of the top 3 shows I have ever been to.
- joculator, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5Got tickets for them Wednesday night.
- BossKey, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3There is still one at my parent's house. I *think* it still works...
- Spamcan, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4Maybe I'm missing the point but wouldn't an 8-track shaped flash drive containing the album be just as nostalgic, sound way better and a hell of a lot more useful?
- diggduggjoe, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Cheap Trick is such an eclectic group. You have the pretty boy lead singer Robin Zander, Tom Petersson on bass that could fit into any metal hair band, the coolest drummer Bun E Carlos and Rick Nielson who plays guitar like the anti-christ. They do tend to move in and out of the mainstream, but damn near any musician gives thanks to them.
- brownsound00, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3you just know that from guitar hero... don't lie
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4A great article - too bad so many Digg commentators failed to actually READ THE DAMN ARTICLE before they started posting stupid comments like '8 track sucks'. It's a gimmick - they admit it. Jeez.
- cuoops, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4HI BILLLY MAYS HERE...ARE YOU A ROCK BAND FROM WAY BACK AND NEED SOME MONEY? WELL I HAVE THE PERFECT SOLUTION....SELL YOUR BRAND NEW ALBUM..NO, YOUR BRAND NEW 8 TRACK FOR ONLY $9.95..BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE, IF YOU GET FAMOUS AGAIN I WILL SELL A BRAND NEW CD COLLECTION OF ALL YOUR MUSIC FOR ONLY THREE PAYMENTS OF $17.34.....
By the way...I like Cheap Trick - HappyScrappy, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Actually the article says the 8-tracks don't sound all that good and cutting the album into 4 sections also makes the listening experience worse too.
It's pretty much a gimmick, you know, a cheap trick... - MatchStick, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3you failed =/
- SteveIsTheDude, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2If you don't have a 2-XL 8-track playing robot, then your very sad. http://www.2xlrobot.com/
- codyman, on 07/06/2009, -1/+3Wouldn't say they are the best band of all time, but I seem to turn up the volume every time one of their songs come on
- e1en0r, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Rockford's not THAT bad. I lived there for about 15 years, and it's not the most exciting place to live, but there are far worse places. And hey, it's got good Swedish pancakes, thanks in part to Rick Nielsen.
- solid12345, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2What's wrong with the album art? In an era where conventional art is dead, the album cover remains one of the last mediums where artists and designers can be creative and showcase their work to a large public audience.
How boring would music be if every album cover looked like the white or black album. - BossKey, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Also the tracks were so narrow and alignment so bad that they were highly susceptible to crosstalk; it was not unusual to hear the song one track over playing very quietly during a silent passage in the current track.
- algaeturd, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Congratulations. You're 'that guy' who monsters the only hit song like a parrot.
- r0g3r, on 07/06/2009, -1/+3Because doing so would cause skips in playback on vinyl.
- Chewie67, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2The fact that we're still talking about Cheap Trick, 3 years after they first got popular, is all you need to know.
Are there other bands that are more talented? Certainly.
Are all of their songs fantastic. No.
Do they put on one hell of a show every time they step on stage? Absolutely?
It's not about who can play the fastest, or who sells the most records on the Top 40 charts, it's about honesty, dedication and having a damned good time while you do it.
Cheap Trick rocks. - MasterGrief, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Who says a person who owns a laser phonograph wants to play modern records? Unless they're trying to keep up with the fairly recent trend of vinyl releases, they could just be someone who wants to use the records in their collection that are so old that they *were* recorded without digital interference.
I don't know if vinyl becomes even more easily worn out with age, but if I had a forty year old record that had never been played before, I'd like to hear it in a way that guarantees it will always sound the way it did when I first put it in the player. Same goes for any vintage record, really.
Why damage it if you don't have to? - CressCrowbits, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Yeah I love that vinyl experience with all it's hiss and crackle, restricted sub 60dB dynamic range and wooly low-end, or 'warmth' as you audiophiles call it.
- anfo, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Ease up on Rockford, it's got enough problems already.
/Rockford native.
//Lives far far away from Rockford now. - Twenty, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2The artist (musician/s, rather) has the choice really. They are the ones who oversee the art and the package of the album (or should, anyway). The album art is part of the artistic statement that the music is making. In fact, it's the only thing they can say to the audience that isn't in the form of music, so even that way, it is important. I have a lot of CDs that are good examples of the musicians taking advantage of this one visual communication for their art.
- A11YND, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1OH OH THE TALKY STICK! YOUR VOICE WAS TRAPPED IN THERE THIS MORNIN'!
- manx45, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1what's is this 8 track ??
- whiskeythief, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1After the door speakers of my Ford galaxy 500 cracked, they would buzz terribly. We took off the covers, dripped candle wax all over them with a lit candle. Then they sounded great!
- whiskeythief, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Old vinyl albums make me hungry. They sound like frying bacon and popcorn.
- andreo, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1@brownsound00
Nah, first time I heard the song was while watching the movie Up the Academy back in the early 80s. I was hooked ever since.
Though I did buy Guitar Hero because the song was on there.
DAMN, now I'm going to be jonesing to play Guitar Hero. Thanks for bring that up. - whiskeythief, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Dark side of the moon was mandatory.
