- Squeegee, on 10/12/2007, -38/+177cheap bastards. With the revenue they can make in a concert, at LEAST they could have donated then to local public schools.
- ownedbytheman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63They got them from PriceRitePhoto so all is well!
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -10/+62"Then again, why not return them for a refund instead and donate money to public schools instead of a big pile of crappy cameras?"
because its ethically wrong to buy something from a store with the intention of returning it. You cost the store money because they have to repackage it, in some instances sending it back to the warehouse to be checked over for defects. And during all of that time, they are down that many cameras which they could have sold to someone else.
The only time when someone could ethically buy a camera with the intention of returning it is if the store charges a restocking fee. This is in effect renting it, and it will probably cost left if you actually do rent it. - spectre, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56Who told you that? I've worked in the industry for nearly 10 years and most of the clothing you see in commercials are acquired from professional costume shops under the direction of the wardrobe artist.
I mean seriously, what kind of business plan includes buying clothing, sweating in it (which most actors do under 3200k quartz lights), and then attempting to return it like it was never worn.
Please don't comment unless you're sure what you're saying is true. - lankybutmacho, on 10/12/2007, -19/+64Then again, why not return them for a refund instead and donate money to public schools instead of a big pile of crappy cameras?
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -7/+50There is no such thing as a "sweet" Hi8 cam.
- mocheeze, on 10/12/2007, -28/+64"cheap bastards. With the revenue they can make in a concert, at LEAST they could have donated then to local public schools."
It appears you don't know much about Beastie Boys and charity work. - Kev585, on 10/12/2007, -27/+59I'm proud to say I have always thought the Beatsie Boys have sucked. They bought Hi8 cameras and returned them, how much does that fading format even cost in store anyway?
"We put them back in their boxes and returned them for a refund. This is low-budget filmmaking, after all. Plus, what the hell am I going to do with that many camcorders?"
A concert video shot at a sold out Madison Square Garden show is low budget filmmaking? That is not the same as some film student doing this to then afford money for food or rent. - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30They could've autographed each one, put it on eBay, and pulled a profit ... easy.
- aratika, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32I'm going to buy the CD and DVD, then rip them to my iPod. And then return them....
- lankybutmacho, on 10/12/2007, -13/+35I'm going to assume that this is just a joke in poor taste, and that you're not actually a complete bigot. That said, you need to understand that this kind of humor might be alright when you're around your friends who already know you're not racist and appreciate the irony, but when you're speaking in a public forum, it's a very bad move.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -37/+55eh, people can make jokes like that without actually BEING racist, at least it was a little funny.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Even if they're spotless, it's completely unethical.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Very very sad. This is theft, plain and simple.
If you buy something and return it, ok fine that's good consumerism if you didn't like it, need it, whatever.
However...
If you buy something with the INTENT of returning it, its theft. No, they won't prosecute you but you've stolen the "newness" the product had before you rented it for free.
Most all retailers will not re-sell such stock as new, it is what becomes "B" stock or bargin bin stuff. So, they can no longer sell inventory they invested in as new. They may lose a sale or two, or more since they don't have a new unit in stock, then they get a used unit in stock they have to dump. To a ma and pa store this can be a big hit.
Like it or not, this is theft. Pure and simple...
I don't like it a bit, and I like old Beastie Boys music... Their new stuff is crapola... - alspar, on 10/12/2007, -13/+28Get a sense of humour people. This comment is clearly tongue-in-cheek.
Also, people are misusing the term anti-semite. Anti-semitism is fear or hatred of Jews. It is NOT the same as making generalisations based upon race. This comment is not explicity anti-semitic. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+28Yes, it's old. But that just makes me so very mad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+33They're too cheap to donate the cameras, but they're willing to spend a YEAR on editing? Give me a break. Penny-pinching celebrities are like happy goths. WTF is up with that.
- jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Yea, those cameras would have fetch a ton of money on Ebay, or how about giving them to the fans that shot the movie for you.
- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17i would hate to be the clerk that got the commission from that sale, then had it revoked.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20They paid the restocking fee 15% if i remember an article I read about this(I didnt read TFA), thus covering the stores expenses for repackaging.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"Please don't comment unless you're sure what you're saying is true."
You're new here, aren't you? - lava, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22It's not from slashdot... it's from SOUTHPARK
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -19/+31It was a funny joke.
You Jewish people: Get over it. Everybody gets made fun of. Stop complaining and suck it up. - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13YOU GOTTA FIGHT!
FOR YOUR RIGHT!
TO A FULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL REFUND!!! - ross., on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Why didn't they sign them and give them to the people who actually filmed this movie.. the fans.
I'm sure they didn't get anything out of this. - oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10... and easily donated that money to one of their many charities.
- celerate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I see a double standard here. Industries can use stores to rent stuff for free, but people listening to music and watching videos are expected to pay through the nose to those industries. I agree with the article stub, when you're done watching the video put it back in the box and return it, fair is fair.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+122004, hi8s were more hi-tech then than they are now
- Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Weird. Hi-8 is so old... even for 2004. Maybe they were concerned with people stealing them or something. At least the paid cameramen used real cameras. I think the whole buying/returning thing is just them going back to their punk roots.
There's a short article about the movie here-
http://www.rkstar.com/mb/viewtopic?forum=news&topic=665 - spikepeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The kid said, "Get ready cause this ain't funny!
My name's Mike D. and I'm about to get money...back for 50 cameras - Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9But did they get the extra batteries and extended warranty?
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -18/+25You know what you do dumbass-- you put them on eBay and give the money to charity, or just pocket the money.
- acontorer, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19Unless they can return the cameras in new condition (saleable as new by the store), this is certainly unethical.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Am I the only one remembering that the Beasties are usually going directly against "those industries?" They're big behind the Creative Commons liscense unless I'm just schizophrenic and THINKING that I remember that.
- xt0ph3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Lots of people, judging by the comments.
- SPRFRKR, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13An ex gf of my is a "wardrobe designer" for movies and commercials. They give her a list of shoots and the theme of commercials. Sometime they give her specific requests of what they want. I remember i had to run around for an entire day looking for a "gap like" shirt with numbers on it (apparently they went out of style a few years ago)...anyway. She spends hundreds, if not, a thousand or so dollars buying the clothing. Depending on the client, the models/actors may be able to keep the clothes. More often than not, she gets the clothes (including the ones not used for the shoot) and she returns them to the store where she bought them. She says a lot of salepeople hate her (I wonder why). So what the parent said is actually true (at least here in little old nyc). So before you go flame somone, maybe YOU should check your facts. My facts come from many long painful days in department stores getting dirty looks while my supposed gf returns several hundred dollars worth of clothes.
- monsieurgrand02, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Beastie Boys sucked long before this.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Again, why are you reading this article if you don't give a *****?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20In soviet slashdot, beastie boys refund YOU!
- jerwood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Heh, I bet your karma sucks.
- jj44, on 10/12/2007, -33/+38There are still anti-Semites in this day and age? Grow up.
- ragz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I don't know what's funnier....what the BeastieBoys did or some of these comments. This kinda thing happens all the time in the the advertising industry.... being famous just makes them an easy target. As far as the anti Semitic stuff....those cats need a life...you can like it or not...why does it have to be a race issue?
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Come on, leave the "Beastie Boys" where they have been for years ... buried.
A bunch of has-beens. This nonsense is just giving them free publicity... - mizunoX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'd say that it was likely an arrangement they had with either the store or manufacturer.
How long before each of them show up on ebay for ten times what they retailed at? - jollyllama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7harrisbradley:
You're right, my comment did not properly Support Our Troops... - oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Why didn't they use MiniDV?"
I wouldn't give away 50 MiniDV cameras to strangers and expect them to come back. Hi8, though... nobody would want to keep them, and if they didn't come back, no big loss. - Solstice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I guess they spent all of their money on giant intergalatic robots.
- phunguss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6this is why i liked the no refund policy at the store i used to work at. people would buy cameras before they went on vacation and then try to return them when they got back.
"what do you mean i can't get my money back?" - kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In the movie "My Date With Drew", the makers claim do have done the same thing to film their movie.
- Poppso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you saying everyone returns them for a full refund? If thats what your selling, I'm not buying.
