WTF?
listen to real music, listen to CLUTCH!! 10001110101 - Splitt3rxx, on 11/15/2007, -1/+15you think thats bad? try avril lavigne trying to do System of a Downs chop suey.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PfM1U74tMJw - GinaJuice, on 11/15/2007, -0/+14I suggest they stop doing crappy music first.
- Richiedude, on 11/15/2007, -1/+10if you do hear or see the "Born To be Wild" remake by Hinder immediately seek out the original version to cleanse yourself
- badjoke, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9People like Hinder in the first place?
- skyshock1, on 11/15/2007, -3/+12I agree with the article... but ***** it all, I REALLY liked Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion. That song was begging to be re-done in a heavier style.
Okay you can all bury me now. - R3Dirkulous, on 11/15/2007, -1/+10I've like all Korns covers of pink floyd, cameo, duran duran, metallica....im so gonna get burried for this. I'm doubting diggers are much into korn. But hey, theyre good covers to me.
- PeppermintPig, on 11/15/2007, -1/+9Boys of Summer is a decent cover. Original is still better.
- nullx42, on 11/15/2007, -1/+9I think their cover of "I will survive" was pretty good.
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Hinder? They're just a Nickelback cover band that really hates women, and Nickelback is just a Creed cover band, minus Jesus, and Creed is just a Pearl Jam cover band, but with Jesus. There is absolutely no excuse for people to be listening to this derivative, generic garbage, besides pure laziness. Turn off your radio and television; the internet is on!
Examples of good cover songs by actual artists:
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
anything by Cat Power, especially "Moonshiner" (Dylan, and more), "Satisfaction" (Rolling Stones), "Wild is the Wind" (Nina Simone, and more), "Crazy" (Gnarls Barkley)
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (Leadbelly), The Man Who Sold The World (Bowie)
Asobi Seksu - Then He Kissed Me (The Crystals)
The Dresden Dolls - lots of great covers, especially "War Pigs" (Black Sabbath) and "Life on Mars" (Bowie)
Nick Cave - Disco 2000 (Pulp)
Muse - Feeling Good (Nina Simone)
Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)
Travis - Hit Me Baby One More Time (Britney Spears)
William Shatner - Common People (Pulp)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN), One (U2)
The Flaming Lips - Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
Giant Drag - Wicked Game (Chris Isaak)
Elliott Smith - Because (Beatles), Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) (George Harrison), Trouble (Cat Stevens)
Low - Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me (The Smiths)
White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton)
And of course, some oldies:
Aretha Franklin - Respect
Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
For good cover albums, check out Cat Power's The Covers Records, the Serge Gainsbourg tribute that came out last year, and the I'm Not There soundtrack. - thedragon4453, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Dugg. That song is something that I think came completely out of left field. Talk about taking a song and making it your own. I think Trent was even quoted saying "That song isnt even mine anymore" or something to that effect.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -2/+9Marilyn Mansons cover of sweet dreams was good.
- cquilliam, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7All i'll say is:
Johnny Cash on Nine Inch Nails
Can't get any cover that consists of 2 great versions by two respectful musicians - blahtastic, on 11/15/2007, -1/+7I personally enjoy when terrible pop/hiphop songs are covered by rockbands. They're still equally ridiculous but at least listen able.
Examples: MXPX- Barbie Girl http://youtube.com/watch?v=AYfk2ra_XAo
Goodnight Nurse- Milkshake http://youtube.com/watch?v=6TIRoc9RWOs
Local H- Toxic http://youtube.com/watch?v=3eT69nguAWk (this one actually is more awesome than ridiculous)
Favorite cover-(since everyone has an opinion) The Living End- Tainted Love http://youtube.com/watch?v=VxOpxeIJHBY - LordVance, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6Behind Blue Eyes was an abomination; if you can't sing it how it was written, don't do a cover.
- eaasness, on 11/15/2007, -2/+8So, I guess you don't like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Greatest/worst cover band ever. http://www.myspace.com/gimmegimmes
- wipis, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5I like covers live. I say this for 2 reasons. My brother used to be in a pretty good cover band and they did all kinds of rock from Clapton to Beatles to Weezer to Led Zeppelin. And they rocked. They would do favorite after favorite and considering how hard it is to see the Beatles in all their glory today it was a good show. And sometimes at a good concert if a band just jams out a famous song its great. Blue Man Group points this out and does this very well. But to put it on an album and sell it is just pompous and lazy. It's rare that your doing justice to the song or putting your own sound on it.
- ByteGuerilla, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5L... I.. M.. P... **blam!** shut the ***** up!
- Observant1, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5it's time for the "music industry" to stop being so incestuous. there are so many talented people making great original tunes the old "go for what you know" isnt working anymore. they have raped everyone for decades on the price of albums, and the people revolt by filesharing for free, so the industry creates the RIAA, recording industry artists association.. which isnt about protecting the artists at all because they exploit artists all the time, it isnt about seeing the artists themselves getting more money, nor does it consist of an association of musicians. it is just the industry hiring a bunch of thug lawyers for their RIGHT to enforce the continued rape of the public on the price of music. a coule cover tunes isnt a bad thing if they do a great job of it.. like exodus doing an ac/dc cover, moshing it UP nicely making it even punchier, but for the most part bands doing cover tunes dont get past playing at a local bar. rick springfield going top10 riding on not so old sammy hagar tunes was about disgusting to me (darn soap opera jock!).
- lansuggs, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5Oh god, that was terrible.
- cajungator2, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Hinder is Aerosmith lite!
- badjoke, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4They're so amazing. One of my top 5 favorite bands.
- diggduggjoe, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4"Celine Dion - You Shook Me All Night Long"
You have to be kidding, right? I may need to track that down to experience the true meaning of horror! - kinseyincanada, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4my god that godsmack cover is indescribably awful.......
- elmphlemp, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4devo- satisfaction (rolling stones)
ariel pink- This Night Has Opened My Eyes (smiths)
great covers - RandomTaskMan, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W91sqAs-_-g
full of win. - Nathanage, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4Bands have been doing this forever, the difference...bands today suck.
good covers.. The Clash "I Fought the Law" and "Brand New Cadillac" - RandomTaskMan, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4+1
- nullx42, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Mob goes wild is one of their best songs. that and careful with that mic.. HA HA- HA HA!
- kpaphysicist, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3CAKE's cover of "I will survive" is so amazing. That's what a cover should be: a great song on its own.
war pigs.. not so much. - Gir53457, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3I think as nerds, geek and dorks we've gotten to the point of pretentiousness where we hate to identify ourselves with main stream pop culture.
- Cerebral, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4I'm sorry but I just don't understand why everyone loves the Cash version. I guess I just love the original too much that IMO Cash trashed the song.
- solid12345, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Beh. Personally I hate when bands do covers and are almost exactly note-to-note with the original song using similiar equipment. It becomes pointless.
I think the perfection of a cover is Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower". How many people under 30 know it was really a Dylan song, it is that damn good that people think Hendrix wrote it. - DudleyInnocent, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4You're damn right you are.
- thedragon4453, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Avril Lavigne doing Fuel for Metallica's icon. I'd say she's a repeat offender.
- LordVance, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Not sure why you were getting buried; your absolutely right. Covers have always been a way for one artist or group to pay their respect to the others that influence them in one way or another. Problem is, if you are a ***** band - your going to produce ***** covers, even if your intent is good.
- Chubs879, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3I like the IDEA of covers, as long as it's an established artist or band that has built up a body of legitimate work. The intent of a cover should be to make the song into something else, like Cake doing I Will Survive, or Cash doing Hurt, or Iron and Wine doing Such Great Heights.
Man, I used to think Godsmack was an alright bad. This is unforgivable. - eaasness, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3GnR's cover of which song? I assume you are talking about "Sympathy for the Devil". That cover was recorded for the Interview with the Vampire soundtrack. This is a practice that is normally done when then original recording can't be used for some reason or another. The same thing happened with Urge Overkill covering "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
- LordVance, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3How has nobody mentioned Jonathan Coulton's many excellent covers?
http://www.jonathancoulton.com/store/downloads (you can listen free to most of them here) (we will rock you is done well, and baby got back is the best thing ever (it is done as an acoustic piece - sounds awesome) - inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3A great example of cover tune perfection is "Blinded By The Light" by Manfred Mann from Bruce Springsteen's original.
- robphillips, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3I can respect an artist for doing their own music and it sucks.. or even doing covers. But blatantly making fun of another artist like this, I can never respect that. If there was any legitimate reason to hate an artist besides not liking their music.. this is that reason.
- thesauce, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Best cover goes to Killswitch Engage's cover of Holy Diver
- Cerebral, on 11/15/2007, -1/+3I'm an old school Korn fan (Korn and life is peachy) but damnit if I don't love Another Brick in the Wall.
- Otto, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Totally complete agreement with lameness of the Godsmack remake. I’ve heard this one a few times on the radio, and it’s basically an exact remake of Zep’s version with no changes to it of any kind whatsoever. Really, really lame.
What’s worse, it’s actually annoying because when I hear the intro chords, I naturally crank the radio, only to be disappointed when I hear the voice of Sully Erna instead of the sweet voice of Robert Plant. Erna is no Plant. Doesn’t even compare.
I got nothing against Zep remakes or remakes in general. But remaking a song *exactly* the same is uber-lame. We’ve heard this song already. If you’re going to sing it too, mix it up a bit, be creative. Remaking it exactly the same make it suck. And Godsmack has really sucked it up on this one. - lowmagnet, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Yeah, she really took the piss out of Fergie with that parody. Even though Alanis doesn't know what 'ironic' means, she's got more talent one one finger than Fergie does in all of her humps.
- MonkeydogPOZ, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2ick, I agree with this article. I heard that Zeppelin cover the other day, and couldn't believe my ears. I became sad.
Bands shouldn't cover classics if they're not up to it.
And on that subject, The Decemberists did a beautiful rendition of Echoes by Pink Floyd a few weeks ago, one of my favourite covers ever now. -
