- grubwort, on 05/19/2009, -11/+93At $0 / month, BitTorrent remains a solid 'will continue to use' option.
- gamerbambi, on 05/19/2009, -2/+71Digg this comment up if Napster reminds you of the 56k era when you will leave your computer on overnight just to download 10 songs.
- hokie47, on 05/19/2009, -0/+35I love how most of us will gladly pay $3-5 for a beer but won't pay a thing for music. Granted it is a lot harder to find free beer.
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -2/+32So, you can stream whatever you want from their library? (unlike Pandora or LastFM)
Doesn't seem like a terrible idea if you sit at a computer 8 hours a day like many people. - AussieJames, on 05/19/2009, -1/+28Forget Napster, I use groveshark which is completely free.
- ldma, on 05/19/2009, -1/+22I liked Napster better in 2000.
- robEstyles, on 05/19/2009, -4/+25Everything Best Buy touches will eventually turn to *****.
- harrisbradley, on 05/19/2009, -1/+17I have been a subscriber for several years, and I was happy with the $12 fee. The fact that they lowered it for already existing customers is great in my opinion. I am basically chained to my computer, so listening to music via the internet is no problem. $5 a month for this is a no-brainer to me. I mean, I get all the Creed my heart desir... uh... I mean... they have all the System of a Down albums which is cool. (No, but seriously, I was joking about the whole Creed thing... honestly, I was)
- x713, on 05/19/2009, -0/+14I almost buried you for Creed. You just don't joke about those kind of things.
- Hypomanic, on 05/19/2009, -0/+14People use Rhapsody?
- zinc6471, on 05/19/2009, -0/+13the day we can torrent food will be the day i never, ever, get off my chair.....
- thematrix307, on 05/19/2009, -0/+13Actually its 999 times (aka cents) better than rhapsody
- gizmo12688, on 05/19/2009, -1/+12Yeah, unlike Circuit City. Man that place will be around forever!
Oh wait.... - SteveIsTheDude, on 05/19/2009, -0/+10I tried it just now... it found a rather obscure song I put in the search (so far so good) but, then the song kept caching (as in stopping for a second)... Not sold yet... How the hell is this free?
Thanks - rjr5021, on 05/19/2009, -1/+11I prefer "might as well"
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -0/+9How doesn't it? If you buy $5 worth of music a month you might as well do it from Napster because you also get the free streaming.
- IanDWD, on 05/19/2009, -1/+10WARNING - Any claims of "Full Access" are misleading. While they will return results for artists like Paul Simon, you only get to listen to 30 second snippets. I was extremely frustrated by this and canceled immediately.
- bigteebo, on 05/19/2009, -0/+9I'll stick to Soulseek. It's free.
- marcduke, on 05/19/2009, -0/+9I'm not sure man-boobs will get you free beer, but whatever floats your boat.
- badenglishihave, on 05/19/2009, -1/+9It will never work. Everyone will be a leecher.
- dalittle, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7People like to own things. The successful business models show this over and over again.
- MeltingIce, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7Why the hell would anyone pay to listen to streaming music when theres Grooveshark and Spotify?
- treesnuggler, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7When you have breasts, finding free beer isn't so hard.
- JackHererUK, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7Sounds like what spotify offers for free
- rrife, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6So i'm paying $5 for a service like Pandora or Slacker....both of which are free, but I get to keep 5 songs....so I'm paying $5 for 5 songs, sounds like the same deal I've had for years.
- coasterswim, on 05/19/2009, -0/+61 song.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6If what you are saying is true, then they are treading dangerously close to false advertising:
"Napster members can get 5 MP3 downloads each month and unlimited on-demand streaming music from Napster's catalog of over 7 million songs,"
...
"Your $5 monthly subscription gives you the run of the store—if we have it, you can play it, on any connected computer, anytime you want. " - macslut, on 05/19/2009, -1/+7I was wondering what, if anything, Best Buy was eventually going to do with Napster. It looks like this is it.
This isn't going to work.
It's streaming. The experience here kind of sucks. If you want the Napster subscription service "to go", it's $14.95 a month.
It's not their full library. It's really frustrating that many songs that show up aren't full versions, but just sample snippets...and their library isn't nearly as full as others.
It's not smart in any way. Services like Pandora and others are great in that they provide varying levels of interacting with them. You can go into radio mode, or really engage with them when you want to. This Napster model is lame in that it only has one real level of interactive mode.
The 5 songs don't roll over. It's one thing to say that you're going to spend $5 a month on average, so why not sign up even if you don't really care for the rest of the Napster service, but those songs don't roll over to the next month. You must use or lose. Think of it this way, the ***** streaming service is free if you commit to buying 5 songs at $1 each a month.
The $5 a month is a special limited time offer. Expect it to go up, or the service to go under.
Of course the biggest problem with Napster service is compatibility. They aren't compatible with the vast majority of the MP3 players that people own. They could build an iPhone app, but have already let others establish a lead there as well. - rrife, on 05/19/2009, -1/+7For the 4 or 5 people who own a Zune, and actually use it, the Zune service cost $14.95 month for unlimited offline downloads....so it may be a better option.
- SubFuze, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5Yeah, there's a web version that works on Firefox and Safari.
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -1/+6I agree.
- SurRea1, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5Could you say it a couple MORE times?
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -1/+6Ok, so I signed up for a month (it's no loss if you're going to download 5 songs anyway) and I have to say; I'm moderately impressed. You can make playlists and such very easily - and they have decent categories and radio stations already set up.
Worth the 5 bucks over something like Pandora or LastFM if you're sick as hell of hearing the same ***** songs over and over again without being able to skip them. These guys may be on to something... though, the mainstream audience has issues with subscription services for some reason.
Personally, I think services like Netflix or ZunePass are fantastic (though as an Apple user I don't have the latter) I'd rather pay a small fee monthly for the rest of my life rather than collect ***** that I won't even bother with a few months down the road. Hell, with a subscription as long as I'm not poor I have access to everything I'd ever want. - bmcnally, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4Curse you for reminding me of Netzero.
- robEstyles, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3The words Best and Buy are synonymous with Bait and Switch
- rjr5021, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3that's about how much the artists make now. I'd rather they make $.15 per song.
- SurRea1, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3So only select songs are available fully for free?
- SurRea1, on 05/19/2009, -2/+5How so please explain... This seems like a great option.
- MrSpontaneous, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3You must work for Verizon.
- TheXboxReview, on 05/19/2009, -3/+6Does it work on Mac? If so, I'm signing up
- jimic79, on 05/19/2009, -1/+3Nah... seriously.. it's nice at work. I can't use torrents here at work, but using rhapsody it's nice to be able to find an album and immediately stream it.
Also, blip.fm is the *****. - djnforce9, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2What is stopping people from using Free Music Zilla to save the streams to HDD (if it's a browser based/tethered streaming). Now the service becomes $5 for a whole month of "free for all". Quite a good deal there :p
- ahhell, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Uhh...it wasn't Lars, it was James.
- synned, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2$0.015 to the artist? You are an *****.
- TheXboxReview, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Thanks for the info
- MacHarborGuy, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2sad thing is, most people who I introduce to Pandora hate it after they run into that 6 song skip limit per hour. however, those are the same people that cannot deal with 10-15 seconds of Netflix streaming buffering before watching a movie.
- davidjunit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2But for that $5 you don't actually OWN the music unless something has changed. I tried Napster many years ago when it was $5/mo and after a couple months I closed out the account and sure enough my music went with it.
I pay $15/mo for unlimited service elsewhere and I can keep what I get from there. - Wheelingdude86, on 05/19/2009, -2/+4Do not want.
- OutAndAbout, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Ok, I have a counter offer. $10 bucks a month for 30 DRM free downloads + unlimited streaming.
It would beat bopping back and forth between Emusic and Last.fm.
Big Music needs to get with the program. Offering downloads is much cheaper than burning plastic.
Musicians need to jump on the bandwagon too. The second they stop printing your discs, royalties drop. Keep your music alive, put it online! - PeterFile, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Yeah, spotify ***** all over this.
