- amsterdamordeth, on 11/02/2007, -6/+222Madonna was one of the louder voices against online file-sharers and screamed at her own label not to "lose her walmart sales". I am not saying she is now promoting it, but she did start selling high quality, DRM-free mp3's via her website in an attempt to "cash in".
This was as far back as 2003 at least. Oh how times change for these artists when they slowly realize that they are losing more money, not because of online file-sharing but because their labels are completely incompetent in the [now and upcoming] digital age. I wouldn't expect much though Madonna. You can't fight your fan base for so many years and just expect them to forget. No, I am not a fan of Madonna. I think she is deplorable. - colouredCoder, on 10/12/2007, -14/+113Radiohead, NIN and now Madonna....things they are a-Changing.
- robche, on 11/02/2007, -1/+87HOUSE of cards
- robche, on 11/02/2007, -7/+89dam i really hope this is going to be a deck of cards type effect, would be great to see the giants tumble... really great
- bitemegates, on 10/12/2007, -3/+67she still Cannot Understand Normal Thinking.
- DarkShroud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63This doesn't wipe her slate clean with the crap she pulled years ago with file sharers.
- disco5896, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63"And the dominoes fall like a house of cards. Checkmate."
Zapp Brannigan, Futurama. - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62well, better to realize late than never at all. maybe more musicians will make the switch once they realize that their labels are a dying breed.
- JSager, on 10/16/2007, -2/+56Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Instead of being angry with her original stance, be happy that she's seen the light and switched sides. She is a powerful voice in the industry, and a lot of people will sit up and take notice.
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44TIMES
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47How exactly has she dumped the record industry? It looks a lot like she's dumped her label for someone else who does ... coincidentally... what a label does but without assuming the job title.
- ChessPieceFace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Or put a nice deck on his house of cards.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34now only if madonna didnt suck....
- thgreatoz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I keep reading that Radiohead started this revolution, so to speak, but I distinctly recall the Barenaked Ladies offering a DRM free, direct-from-their-website album last year. Was that still funded by the RIAA or something?
- MindStalker, on 10/14/2007, -0/+30I think the big difference is big labels consider the musician a contract for hire. The label owns you for the most part. Live Nation is an event organizer and agent. She is effectively free to do what she wants, they don't own her music in any way.
- analogs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22This isn't quite as groundbreaking as it seems. All she did was go to another company for largely the same services. She's still paying MILLIONS of dollars to a company to produce studio albums and promote her work. This isn't fundamentally different from what a record label provides. Had she recorded all her albums at home and released them for free online, that would be a different story.
- amsterdamordeth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Maybe he made a house of cards out of the decks.
- m3t00, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24I see what you did there
- argeaux, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22This company LiveNation is owned by CLEAR CHANNEL!
All is not what it seems. She's actually pandering to one of the worst companies in the music industry. - krschuerman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I look forward to seeing unique and creative ways unknown artists will hit it big.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22From what I've heard, she sucks very well.... OHHHHH, you meant the OTHER suck.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I dunno, but They Might Be Giants started selling MP3's on their website in 2004. The new thing about the Radiohead album is the optional payment. Brilliant strategy, too. They'll sell to their fans, and they'll sell to all the anti-RIAA nerds who want to make a statement.
- DevilsLeftHand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Subtle.
- Jonjonr6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19ironically, I think sucking is what got her started
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Come on people....
"the times are e-changing"
Get the bad puns done. - missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Sure sounds like a record label to me. Even if they don't call themselves that.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -2/+14damn. Does this mean I'll have to start buying Madonna albums? I'll at least listen to the Radiohead one.
- astrotrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12** mumbles some Bob Dylan gibberish to the tune **
- noisician, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12isn't that just a vanity plate on a major label?
- fnaqzna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Nation
"As a previous subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications under the Clear Channel Entertainment name, Live Nation was party to some highly visible controversies. The 2005 SEC filing for the creation of Live Nation listed several reasons for pursuing the split, including avoiding regulatory and legal pitfalls faced by Clear Channel." - Rahodeb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13If Trent was from Australia, he might.
- cl0r0x70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11NIN, Radiohead, etc. got to the point they are at through the labels. Unfortunately, it is still very difficult today to "make it" in the music industry without label support. The fact that a few mega-artists decided to go it alone is not a strong indicator. When we see a band explode from nothing to the size of NIN while remaining independent, THAT will be the harbinger of things to come.
- Enfenestrate, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15If by good you mean terribly annoying and depressing, sure
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14NOFX knew all along.
Kick back watch it crumble
See the drowning, watch the fall
I feel just terrible about it
That's sarcasm, let it burn
I'm gonna make a toast when it falls apart
I'm gonna raise my glass above my heart
Then someone shouts "That's what they get!"
For all the years of hit and run
For all the piss broke bands on VH1
Where did all, their money go?
Don't we all know
Parasitic music industry
As it destroys itself
We'll show them how it's supposed to be
Music written from devotion
Not ambition, not for fame
Zero people are exploited
There are no tricks, up our sleeve
Gonna fight against the mass appeal
We're gonna kill the 7 record deal
Make records that have more than one good song
The dinosaurs will slowly die
And I do believe no one will cry
I'm just ***** glad I'm gonna be
There to watch the fall
Prehistoric music industry
Three feet in la brea tar
Extinction never felt so good
If you think anyone would feel badly
You are sadly, mistaken
The time has come for evolution
***** collusion, kill the five
Whatever happened to the handshake?
Whatever happened to deals no-one would break?
What happened to integrity?
It's still there it always was
For playing music just because
A million reasons why - calgone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Once a few more "huge money maker" acts bail (i.e. U2, Coldplay, etc) on their record labels, the industry will crumble. Timbaland can't make them all the money
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Heh, you got that fortune cookie too?
- oldhick, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Uh... Not really, most labels don't arrange, market or provide merchandising for concert tours. There are agencies that specialize in these things. Any artist who's worth his/her salt retains merchandising rights. I'm not sure where you're coming from with this, but I can tell you through personal experience that labels do not provide much in the way of touring support other than cash. Now there are promotional showcases that are different then tours. Those are often fully funded and arranged by labels.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13The comment above you "deck of cards" instead of HOUSE OF CARDS, and you... "things they are a-changing.." TIMES.
GODDAMN IT.
Don't repeat things just because you hear other people say them. - bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"Who even uses CDs anymore?"
Nearly everyone. 90% of music revenue is CDs. iTunes is the #1 download service, and it has about 5% of the music sales. You need to realize that your little digital world with RAID servers at home doesn't apply to most of the people in the world. - etruscan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Wait - doesn't Madonna own a record label?
http://www.maverick.com - isaactwito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7VinceNoir has no friends.
- oldhick, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11You're view on music and artists really sucks... Most artist's feel "forced" to sign over their ownership and I don't know of any who are fighting for the privilege. Maybe if you're a no talent hack, you'll jump at the first opportunity they get.
- davewashere, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I hope Radiohead, NIN, and Madonna decide to tour together. What a fun show that would be.
- ThomasOkken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8"Oh how times change for these artists when they slowly realize that they are losing more money"
Madonna losing money? She is one of Warner Brothers most prolific and reliable money-makers. WB are *not* happy to see her go, and her fans don't seem to have a problem with her either. Just my $0.02... - vat0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8A Has Been who still has many songs that are popular and downloaded/purchased every day. I say good for her.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I went back and checked. Their first MP3-exclusive album was in 1999.
- Twinked, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7What's significantly different about this deal is there is no RIAA invovled. People who are saying it's the same thing... it's not. There is no RIAA involvement with Live Nation.
- etruscan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Apparently it's a real label distributed by Warner. I didn't know this until I wicki'd it... but there's also a Maverick Pictures.
- Eeqmcsq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I thought about the same thing, and I suppose the difference is that Live Nation is more focused on concerts and live performances, and might not care as much about album sales.
- blackredblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hmmm, someone might want to do a bit of research on Livenation (formerly part of ClearChannel). They are doing as much damage to real musicians/promoters/indies as the major labels.

I've worked for this company, they're bad news. Enjoyed the free tickets though. -
