01) Amoeba - Berkeley, CA - spookyttws, on 04/18/2009, -0/+8Rasputin Records in San Francisco is another good one, but shouldn't bump any of these off the list. Also if you haven't been to Amoeba Records and you live with in 60 miles of one, it's definitely worth the drive. We regularly make the drive up to LA, even though it's about an hour north of where I live.
- t0spmad, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7Dugg for EAR X-TACY
- Nrvana423, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6Glad to see Vintage Vinyl at least got an honorable mention.
- xenuxenuts, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6I alternate between them and Rasputin's on telegraph.
- monkiboi, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5Amoeba, Rasputin's and a slice of Blondie's Pizza was a weekly ritual for many years.
- AustinGirlNow, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4Glad to see Waterloo on the list!
- matthewdestroys, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4The Love Garden in Lawrence, KS should be on there.
- AdamaObama, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3People always forget about Denver:

Great record store. - MMusick, on 04/17/2009, -1/+4Nice to see Wax 'n Facts. Criminal is a good one as well in Atlanta.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Greatest music store EVER!
- rudezombie, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I got excited when I saw Record Exchange, but then bummed when it wasn't the Princeton Record Exchange. I don't even want to think about how much money I've left in that place over the years.
- drewvis, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Don't forget to visit your local Indie Record Store tomorrow, April 18th, for Record Store Day.
- indubitably, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3dugg for physical media and human contact
- Paal, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3+1 for Electric Fetus
I saw Matthew Caws from Nada Surf play an acoustic set there in 2003. The place was packed full of hipsters, children of hipsters, college students, and hippies. It was one of the best music experiences I've ever had.
Oh, and they have a great selection there too! - mutantchicken14, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Yeah, the best part about going to UC Berkeley is that Amoeba and Rasputin are just a block or two away from campus. I don't even know where I'm going to go for music once I graduate...
- papastout, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I think I just found my next national sightseeing tour.
Rhino Records FTW - http://www.rhinorecords.cc/ - calebian, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Employees at Waterloo helped be discover Centro-Matic. and for that I am thankful
- GroundIsSound, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2keep louisville weird
- aresef, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2What? No Sound Garden (Baltimore)? Lame.
- asgardshill, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I spend a small fortune in Aquarius every time I'm in San Fran. And the article's not lying about their staff being pretty much all credentialed musicologists, almost to a person.
- noahgelman, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Amoeba Music. I went to the one in Hollywood, and it is truly an epic place. I was in awe when I walked in. We went on senior ditch day. They have nearly everything besides country.
- Ytliek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2April 18th is my birthday!
- AwsmGy, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Reckless Records is awesome, Madison store ftw.
- Pirate42, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I really didn't like Grimey's that much when i went in there.
Phonolux in Nashville was a lot better to me.
The Great Escape in Nashville is good too, its half record store, half comic book shop. - displacednomad, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2See also,
Homer's in Omaha, NE (and several other locations in Bellevue, Lincoln, and Des Moines).
They rock the bestest because they have a lot of Omaha based bands, which we all know and love: Tilly and The Wall, Conor Oberst, The Faint, Cursive, Eagle Seagull, Grasshopper Takeover, Tokyo Police Club, Rilo Kiley, and etc... - Hortinstein, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2So glad sonic boom is on there...thats the place where I go to buy the records I really like after downloading them off of waffles. Great staff with amazing music knowledge and free concerts in store! I saw the Fruit Bats there (check them out) but here are some other bands that have played there:
Vampire Weekend (09/22/2007)
Voxtrot (06/02/2007)
Blue Scholars (06/07/2007)
The Long Winters (07/25/2006)
Nada Surf (05/27/2006)
Pretty Girls Make Graves (04/15/2006)
Silversun Pickups (09/26/2005) ---So sad I missed this one...
MIA (05/12/2005)
TV On The Radio (04/25/2004)
Stars (11/14/2003)
The Shins (04/14/2002)
Death Cab For Cutie (03/20/2000)
Some amazing free concerts in there....I miss the fremont store though...3 stores away from my favorite teriyaki in seattle - CB810, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2I spent my youth at Ear-X-tacy. Great, great store. Amoeba is huge and amazing
- fyrewal, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2***** this list. No mention of anything in Omaha, someone already mentioned Homer's, but what about Drastic Plastic or even the Antiquarium?
- protogenxl, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2They are Missing the Princeton Record Exchange of Princeton, NJ
http://www.prex.com - dafragsta, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Waterloo is one of the coolest things about Austin and it really is a glowing example of what an indie music store ought to be. They sell major label stuff, but ANYONE can drop off CDs at Waterloo on consignment and become a self publisher. It's one of the reasons that Austin has such a culture of local indie music. Incidentally, Waterloo has really good restaurants as well. I'm a fan of the tortilla chip crusted catfish.
- randmcnally, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2yeah I wish the internet was all plain text, no fuss no muss.
- rockstar1o9, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2except for pr0n, of course :)
- RIPtechtv, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Oh yah up tell recently when my friend quite paying for music and he wasn't such a health nut that he is today we use to go to Amoeba in Hollywood once every other week. It was the same thing go there he would get music and then we get lunch at Pinks Hotdog. Then we would get the heck out of there cause most regular people in California don't like going to Hollywood for longer then they have to.
- BloodnThunder, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Waterloo Records in austin. That place is ***** amazing!
- liquidhalcyon, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I can't go into Waterloo without dropping a *****-ton of money. They also have a great hard-to-find film collection as well. They used to have a seperate store (Waterloo Video) but have since brought it all under one roof.
A sure stop whenever you come to Austin. (Also, Austin Books & Comics for you comic fans). - merdiesel, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1I have been going to Amoeba on haight for about 10 or 11 years now, and I've never left there empty handed. Great Selection, better prices and the staff usually recommends me some good stuff. Plus you can catch some sweet live acts there as well. I actually got a chance to see Tenacious D preform a while back.
- damagemanual, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1In Michigan, Royal Oak and Ann Arbor used to be full of fantastic record stores back in the early 90's. Now I could count the total number of GOOD shops on both hands. It's a very sad to see the state of things these days.
I do agree with Amobea, I lived in Berkeley for a short time and about ***** my pants the first time I walked in there.
I really need to take a trip back out that way again. - PasteEater, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1Mine too!
- moghua, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Zunior.com, my favourite canadian music store.
- Lousansano, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Academy Records in NYC?
- JonM1357, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1dugg for ear-x-tacy, the greatest record store in the world!!!!!!!!! klw!!!!
- polexia, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1I have been to 3, including honorable mentions.
I must have spent at least two hours in Jackpot. I got my first Alice In Chains there. - Winstonsodyssey, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1It's a travesty that Used Kids in Columbus, OH isn't on this list. Best record store I've ever been to, and I live in Chicago. Used Kids blows away the two Chicago stores on this list. I would guess that every reviewer in Columbus sells their promos to Used Kids, because, when I lived in Ohio and would make monthly trips there, I'd always leave with a pile of 10-20 CDs, 2 or 3 of which would not be due for release for another few weeks, and have paid less than 50 bucks for the whole pile. The layout made that store the most fun to browse by at least 2-1 to the next best record store I have ever been in. It's tiny, but I've never had more fun in a record store.
- ericcc, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Isn't all music free now? Do people still buy music?
- hypnote, on 07/28/2009, -0/+1technically that makes them a "small chain", not an "Indie Store" but I am with you all the way anyhow!
- gabbagabba, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Extreme noise records in Minneapolis is way better than electric fetus.
- ru1dt, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1There used to be two Record Exchanges in Raleigh. Now they're both closed...
Still have Schoolkids, though. - sanders100, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1My friends and I often take the 2 hr drive to Hollywood just to roam Amoeba Records all day. Glad to see it number one!
