- Frecklefoot, on 09/03/2008, -1/+17It's not really a "challenge" or a wiki. It's just a site with user-submitted material. Really not all that exciting.
- martk, on 09/03/2008, -1/+13I thought they already did the whole artist info wiki on Last.fm
It works there. - ericnicolaas, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9It will be interesting to see how many edits they get. Since the content's not free to share around the net, Amazon is effectively just trying to attract volunteers to populate its pages with content, for free.
Now, if they rewarded contributors by slapping their affiliate IDs on links to product, depending on how much they've contributed... THAT would make things interesting! - llbbl, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7What about Last.fm, they are a even better resource than wikipedia or amazon because you can listen to full length tracks for free.
- madeingermany, on 09/02/2008, -0/+7I hope this doesn't go to the front-page... when hordes of digg users with too much time on their hands are through with that content....
Oh wait, they have an an approval process! dug :p - TheBogie, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6This is a conundrum. Do I vandalize Celine Dion's page first, or Cher's?
- RadiatedAnt, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5album covers yess!
- KenSPT, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5Well, atleast this isn't about Sarah Palin ...
- Kenzan, on 09/03/2008, -1/+6The content must first be approved by Amazon staff?
I don't get it. Are they going to employ a legion of Music insiders or something?
Sounds a bit dodgy to me. - erreur, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4yawn.....DISCOGS?
- Akram, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5YAYYYY we are taking on a non-for-profit organization ! yeyyyyy.
They aren't taking on anyone. - koyner, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3Skip ahead:
http://www.soundunwound.com/ - yurimxpxman, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3***** THE RIAA!
- Murdats, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3yay, sensationalist 'journalism'
"a big company is developing a (common) similar system to another group, they must obviously be trying to compete(kill is the word isnt it?) with them"
next you will see 500 articles by bad journalists trying to get ad money about the "wikipedia killer" - BrapAllgood, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3Seriously.
http://discogs.com/ - arjie, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Exactly! Besides this doesn't seem to be any better than last.fm's wikis for each band.
- Skod, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2last.fm already did it...
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 09/03/2008, -1/+3FRAK the RIAA
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Yep, and then there is discogs and AllMusicGuide...
So with Wikipedia, we already have four huge sites that need to be updated by volunteers and editors. Why add another one? I mean: As far as *reviews* are concerned, the more the better. But with encyclopedias, I'd hate to see all the smart people's knowledge spread thin about a dozen sites. - kong27, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Um... I Think Weird Al beat you to it...
http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Constipated ... - Somnabot, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2hmmm, maybe Amazon will help protect legitimate edits from being reversed by noobs building their own edit counts.
- KiwiUK, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I'd rather see Amazon rolling out their MP3 store to other countries rather than spending time on this
- slugicide, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2This is more like Last.fm than wikipedia, as wikipedia has some pretty strict notability requirements. Just because a band puts out an album doesn't mean they get on wikipedia.
Also, Unwound is one of my favorite bands, ever. - kong27, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Amazon has a music Wiki ... now all they have to do to be called competition is have a Wiki of EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD!
- thelastcivilian, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2hmm... she could serve as inspiration for some band names, though.
"The Sarah Palin (In-)Experience" - TimDigg, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2So freaking pointless....everyone who tries to compete with wikipedia...
ends up making a site that might as well be a part of the larger wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu-Tang_Clan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portishead
What's wrong with these?
I'll admit allmusic.com is pretty cool, but now I mainly use wikipedia.org
It's as redundant as making a google maps site that is specifically for the state of california. - Vixybelle, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1What about discogs.com? They had some user functionality for a while?
- CRCulver, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2"What's wrong with these?"
Well, they are about bands that suck, for one. - conversekid, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2Wow, that's great.
What.cd had this a few months ago. - skinturtle, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1You know it brother!
That kind of thing grinds me to the core. - dabestdefense, on 09/04/2008, -0/+1It is called copy and paste, now the smart people have there knowledge on twelve dozen sites and we do not have to worry about one going down or closing off access to the data.
- AdeleMor, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1nothin wrong with diversifying user-aggregated data/info
- t5pang, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1finally I can change the lyrics to that one song to say "why do you have to go and make things so constipated?"
- Remlapw, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0i really dislike amazon.. wikipedia on the other hand i think is amazing so i'm really split on the article
http://www.how--to-make-money-online.blogspot.com - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -1/+1lol.... amazon has been selling ***** for years, Wikipedia has been wring ***** for years. if amazon starts writing music wiki, WHAT ARE THEY GONNA DO ABOUT THE OTHER 99.9% OF ARTICLES WIKIPEDIA HAS? :(
- KenSPT, on 09/03/2008, -3/+2The same can be said about this black dude named Obama ...
