- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+55You don't honestly think that they did stop time, do you? It's probably done through the same technique as those Lego videos.
- cptn_cardboard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41lets put it this way:
If it wasnt done with computers, these guys are idiots. - Gaarra, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29Cool video. The song that went with it though was terrible.
- Wonkanobi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23Mute your speakers and you've got pure genius
- megapuppy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14I guess I can answer some questions floating around here as I actually worked on that video :) I did the final conform and grade - and some other visual tweaking. It was created mostly using Photoshop and After Effects, though some of the video-derived bits (shots of the band) were created using a Shake script. It was directed by Wade Shotter, a NZ director who's just moved to the UK. The production company was Factory Films - www.factoryfilms.net
In terms of time spent... Well, I spent about a week on it, but Wade must have been working on it for a month or two as he did most of the animation. I think he had some guys in NZ doing additional animation as well. It was a pretty intensive effort.
There's a little bit more info about it on my own site - digitaldistortion.net - jeffeb3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I don't think they did stop motion either. I haven't seen any lego movies, but I imagine the photo mosaic algorithm wouldn't be far off, just feed it the pictures of the sides of dice, and the video, add a couple man-months for the "gritty details" and voia-la. It would still take a while, but not nearly as long, and certainly not as pain-staking.
- LouBrown, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I'm not 100% sure, but that could be computer designed, similar to that White Stripes song with the LEGO blocks. They apply an image to an overlay of dices...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9very cool (and I liked the music too). Reminds me of "Fell in Love with a Girl"

does anybody know who the director was? - shaggyb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I'd like to know how long it took to make that video. It was really cool.
- HeaveN, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13ya god awful song, neat idea but overall it sucked because of the horrible song.
- CannedMango, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Suddenly, I feel like playing Jumpman
- MrFatalistic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4don't understand the following in this music, I would be seriously bored of this music in a week. I like other indie rock like the eels, modest mouse, etc, but this is just boring..
- restlessdesign, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9There was definately some programming involved. There are programs out there that will take an image and convert it to ASCII, and will spit out whatever characters or numbers you want based on the tone. You could then push those values into an array, loop through it, and substitute the correct image of a di. Solved. :)
- ajgv, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8restless, yeah, cept your way is excessive and sorta dumb.
- MrPlug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@rootneg2
i love when someone posts a way better video, thanks dude1 - scottique, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one who keeps hearing the lyric, "Like pixellated scraps of Chex Mix in your headlights"?
- Dustgunner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of the video for Fell in love with a girl by The White Stripes.

- ice109, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3please people, there is absolutely no way in hell they did this all by hand.
- Fracture98, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@CannedMango
That is precisely what I thought when I saw that scene at about a minute and a bit. Luckily I have a C64 emulator, so I'm off to do just that. - Gaarra, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hahaha, that's what it sounds like to me too!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1very good idea, and looks very cool
- vann, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Not sure who direct the F&M video, but Michael Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame directed the White Stripes video.
- danarama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1solid
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Catch Fugiya & Miyagi on the Peter Bjorn & John tour this summer. It's a fun show.
- CaptShmo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2i normally don't like this kind of music but this one did it for me, digg
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Some parts are believable by hand... but the all black scenes where you can see the guy singing or playing guitar are just too accurate to have been done by hand. IF the are physical dice laid out by hand then they used software to convert a video into dice layouts frame for frame.
- tybris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Amazing music video made with only 6 sided dice"
but without the dices and with a computer - tektalk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Very creative effects with dice, which is awesome.
- seGGy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ASCII art with dice.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The white stripes song you guys are referring to was directed by Michel Gondry. While he did use reference and i guess you could call it lego rotoscoping, he did in fact lay out all of the legos and make everything by hand-- which gave it the slightly more tangible feel than this one....(not to mention a lot of respect in the animation community). This video, though, is using layer units and digital fitting. Do you guys remember that website that made those "big picture made of tons of tiny pictures" images...well its the same digital technique as that, except instead of tiny pictures they are digitally referencing dice faces.
- zipzipzipz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that would take forever it they did it by hand
- directedition, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's analogue libcaca
- BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32 possible approaches. One involves 3D, the other one's a total comp effect.
If you go with 2D, then you'll need to have few plates of screen being covered completely with dice, as orthographically arranged as possible. Take a frame of white dice. Do color correction to get red dice, blue dice, whatever. Take the video footage that you want "dicefied". Downres it to the point where one pixel is the size of single dice cube. Then upres it back. To the resolution of your dice element plate. Pull a series of luma and color keys with different thresholds on the video. Use the generated mattes to reveal dice though them... or even simpler - just do dice color correction though them.
Second method involves 3D and a bit of scripting. Most software packages have some sort of texture analyzer nodes or commands. In Maya you can emit instanced geometry off a surface while inheriting color. Then you can plug a condition into the creation expression (ex. if rgbPP - damndj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love Fujiya & Miyagi and love them even more for having a video like this.
Great work! Great song too. Their whole CD is great, so if you digg this, check it out. - MrSidnet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Reminds me of Rilo Kiley - It's A Hit

This one has parts where they use a Lite Brite. - dinkola, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Not that hard to do if you've ever done a course in image processing. Get yourself a greyscale image. Get a grid of pixels and average the the grey scale in a mark from 1-6 (1 all or nearly all pixels white, 6 black or nearly all pixels back, etc). Replace current grid with pic (pixels) of dice showing that number. Thats a basic version of how to do it. You could write a program to do it for a basic image - it'd be a pretty short program too.
- Gav0510, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Fujiya & Miyagi are great, their album was one of the best releases last year.
- WazzaM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Nice video... O.K. song... The video software they used to make it is great.
- EricAugu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Awesome. The video (and song) convinced me to buy the album.
FYI, the album is cheaper on iTunes as opposed to the record company's website. - johlin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Their album is great too. Download it and buy it if you like it.
- fglmiami, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0 That is so fake. You can see the clip lines at 1:43. I saw my friend do this on his PC.
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Wait, this is by Fujiya & Miyagi?? MISTER Miyagi?? So this is what he did after the Karate Kid movies ;)
(I know, Pat Morita died a couple years ago. RIP) - haloevo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3mouth movement on one part of the video would of probably taken a full day.... wow this must of taken a long ass time.
- Wavewash, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4Ahh just noticed this got front page on youtube aswell.
- kuhlmeye, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Hey! I love blatant, shameless self advertising!!!!!!
