- Timsky1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hey everyone... you guys clobbered us (in a good way of course). still recovering... fedexing hardware. Everyone at Pandora has become intimately familiar with the digg phenomenon. Just wanted to say thanks. This enthusiasm is our lifeblood...
- riancurtis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow. i agree with everyone and hope that whoever submitted this has a great day tomorrow
- TheDecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Works using the Music Genome Project database. Basically people have been working to tag music with relevant properties, then when somebody enters an artist, it searches the database for music with similar tags. A lot of effort must go into this.
- ukdataguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pandora is sweet. Some of the connections it makes I would never have thought of. Does anyone know how this works?
- digitalson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is really excellent.

- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how the hell... this thing guessed 90% of the songs in my existing collection. Amazing...

- JustPlainJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This blew me away so much I registered for digg so I could comment here and tell you all how much it blew me away.
Of course, I've only been reading digg for like 4 days, but still, this Pandora is just plain spooky! - maDDHatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my "pink floyd radio"
was great
digged. - baltakatei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool. Now I can finally listen to some good ragtime without spending hours scouring obscure webpages.
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I made a program that lets you run pandora as a task tray icon which you can click on to hide or show the main window... cuz I got tired of having the window in my taskbar. Is there any interest in this kind of thing?
- redsox59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This thing is so polite it almost makes me sorry for clicking "this song isn't what the station should play".
- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is the coolest invention of all time. really.
- the_d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy *****. That swf has over 50,000 lines of code in it.
The only explanation:
Aliens built it. (Robot aliens?)... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Holy crap! I used to use this all the time until my 10 hours ran out! ++++Digg!

Heh same pink floyd channel is awesome so is sublime. - tellall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i posted this comment the last time the story got dugg, but i am truly amazed at the glowing praise this thing has received.
there are a number of reasons why i think this is quite bad. granted, it's nice to listen to music for free, but i question the fundamental assumption that pandora makes - that i like music from a certain band only because of specific musical qualities, not because of some combination of those qualities and the emotional response the music creates.
to illustrate, i typed in "low" - a quiet band who recently made a transition from a smaller indie label to a larger one (kranky to sub pop). their latest record is pretty guitar-heavy, kinda alt-rock. but their defining sound is quiet, atmospheric. within a couple of songs, they had me listening to poison and john fogerty (no joke). this is probably because john fogerty's guitar rock has superficial similarities to the song structure on low's most recent album. but the bands are TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and i can't imagine someone who loves low's catalog ever mentioning the two artists in the same breath.
another example: two steps from joanna newsom, i get lorenna mckennitt - because joanna newsom was misidentified as a folk artist.
the problem is that artists are determined to have a "defining sound" via a narrow set of musical parameters. a search for "sufjan stevens" correctly yields "great lake swimmers" and "iron and wine", but misses a connection to steve reich or other minimalist influences, or any connection to his earlier electronic work. even mainstream commercial artists can change over the course of their career, or even in the span of a couple of albums.
moreover, their library is quite small. any insistent music fan will be missing quite a bit of the big picture.
the explicit and implicit recommendations of people based on their musical tastes are more important than an analysis of musical qualities. - TheDecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tellall...there's always a critic. Your points are valid, but personally I've found 17 artists that I really enjoy and would probably never have discovered without Pandora. That's within the 12 hours since I started using it. At least in my case, that's an amazing success.
- quastor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Yahoo's Launchcast at work, but it's getting to the point where it's just playing the same stuff over and over again, rather than letting me hear anything new. Looks like Pandora just took over the privilege of provided my music during the work day. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
- recordstoregeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A post over at SlimDevices hints that it may one day be possible to play Pandora's suggestions over my Squeezebox.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18080 - TheDecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To those very few who have complained that Pandora does not have their music:
Q: When I try to create a station from my favorite song or artist, Pandora has not heard of them. Can you fix that?
We're constantly analyzing music: every week, all the time, new releases and back catalog. If we don't have something you're looking for, let us know and we'll get it. - TheDecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fennmacon, I'm digging Piebald...thanks for the tip! This thing has paid off in spades today!
