- trishak, on 12/10/2008, -10/+178Rolling Stone has proven yet again that they have no musical authority.
- xxDriveNxx, on 12/11/2008, -1/+98Jonas Brothers? Seriously? I wasn't even aware that anyone older than 12 listened to this.
Well, there goes the last shred of respect that I ever had for Rolling Stone. - SketchaMPM, on 12/10/2008, -9/+103Lil' Wayne is musical cancer. The fact that this cocky, barely coherent, braindead idiot slurs through his beats with the nerve to liken himself to Biggie and 'Pac, gets credit as 'best rapper of today' infuriates me. Meanwhile, intelligent and skilled rappers like Common or Lupe Fiasco get left in the dust. WTF.
- CrimsonBlur, on 12/11/2008, -2/+75"Lil Wayne topped hip-hop and Metallica thundered back" - is Rolling Stone a satire mag now?
- einrobstein, on 12/10/2008, -2/+74Rolling Stone is just as irrelevant (completely and utterly) as MTV when it comes to music.
- ileftfark, on 12/11/2008, -4/+65Wow. 2008 sucked.
- Ugoff, on 12/11/2008, -0/+44Jonas Brothers on that list, this list and anything Rolling Stone says from now on is completely invalid.
- sockpuppets, on 12/11/2008, -0/+28They gathered moss long ago.
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 12/10/2008, -3/+26Chinese Democracy in the top 50?!?!? Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
- CasualJesus, on 12/11/2008, -5/+26Jonas Brothers, Metallica and AC/DC?
List invalid. - phaseblue, on 12/11/2008, -4/+24It was a big year for NIN. As a diehard fan, I was really hoping to see both Ghosts and The Slip on here. (The Slip is.)
- weedancer, on 12/11/2008, -0/+18Dugg for linking to the final page and the full list without having to go through two results a page!
- dukksoup, on 12/11/2008, -5/+23New List:
1.MGMT: Oracular Spectacular
2.NIN: The Slip
3.The Raconteurs: Consolers of the Lonely
4.M.I.A.: Kala
5-50.anything else as long as the Jonas Brothers are not included. - inactive, on 12/11/2008, -4/+21Whoever contributed to this list should be shot...
40 | Jonas Brothers: A Little Bit Longer
41 | AC/DC: Black Ice
I don't know what else there is to say... - Badandy127, on 12/11/2008, -4/+21Lil' Wayne is not music. Rap is. Don't be a close-minded fool.
- algaeturd, on 12/11/2008, -1/+17Pitchfork will have theirs out soon. It'll be slanted but still much, much better than Rolling Stone's version.
- Technopundit, on 12/11/2008, -0/+15What does Rolling Stone know?
- DanteDefiance, on 12/11/2008, -1/+16Might be the huge fanboyism talking here, but the Slip and Ghost utterly destroy everything on Rolling Stones top 10.
- Badandy127, on 12/11/2008, -0/+13Since when has appreciation of songs and lyrics needed a certain skin color? I can't enjoy a Jay-Z song because I'm a white kid with a diploma? I can't appreciate Lupe's wordplay and story-telling skill because I don't wear a hoodie? WTF is wrong with you? Is the only rapper I'm allowed to like Eminem? It's ***** like you that perpetuate racial divides.
- audleylibrary, on 12/11/2008, -1/+14suck
- bobloblaw4, on 12/11/2008, -2/+15i loved the fleet foxes album. well deserved to be up there.
- Badandy127, on 12/11/2008, -1/+13How dare you say Kanye is on the same level as Common and Lupe? I don't care that he's cocky (hell, according to my friends I'm one of the cockiest people they know), his lyrics don't stand up to Common's, let alone Lupe's. His beats, as usual, are phenomenal (because he made them), but the mere idea that you even liken his writing prowess to that of Lupe Fiasco is unbelievably ignorant.
- Intention, on 12/11/2008, -2/+14with all the abominations on that list, you bitch about MGMT.
- schavira, on 12/11/2008, -0/+11Basically sums everything up. I'd rather read a list by pretentious hipster douchebags than a magazine that says the Jonas Brothers had one of the best albums of 2008.
- peterneo, on 12/11/2008, -0/+11This isn't about the music is it?
- Kelligan, on 12/11/2008, -4/+15Dugg for Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes..amazing bands
- AndrewDB, on 12/11/2008, -0/+10Your taking Rolling Stones word on music?
This is like taking George W. Bush's advice on whats good for the government... - gdgrrl, on 12/10/2008, -8/+18dugg for NIN and TV on the Radio. Nick Cave and David Byrne/Brian Eno should be way higher!
- aperfectnumber6, on 12/11/2008, -1/+10No Sigur Rós and no Portishead makes Homer something something...
- Khiva, on 12/11/2008, -1/+10I'm still pissed about their 100 Greatest Guitarists issue.
I mean, Kurt Cobain was like, 14th. Nothing but love for Kurt, but a guitar god? Do you any guitarists that talk about Cobain as a guitar player?
Slash wasn't even on there. Sad. - Badandy127, on 12/11/2008, -0/+8Lost all credibility for putting Lil' Wayne on top of the hip-hop ranks...
- cuevas4711, on 12/11/2008, -0/+815 years for the #12 spot.
- kjones555, on 12/11/2008, -0/+8"It's rap people. It's suppose to be as politically incorrect and offensive as possible, not educational or meaningful"
You think legends like Rev Run would agree with you. Or how about the Sugarhill Gang or Big Daddy Kane? *****, look at how rap started and look what it became. A bunch of ignorant *****! U right about T.I., but that post is wrong on so many levels. - algaeturd, on 12/11/2008, -0/+8This is why I don't read Rolling Stone anymore. They blew it long ago.
- iammzac, on 12/11/2008, -2/+10Yeah, this year some great hip hop albums came out which were overlooked:
Q-Tip - The Renaissance
Elzhi - The Preface
The Roots - Rising Down
Black Milk - Tronic
Madlib - Beat Konducta Volume 5 and 6
Erykah Badu: New Amerykah: Part 1
Just to name a few.. I was surprised Erykah Badu was even listed on there. - IpecacNeat, on 12/11/2008, -1/+8No, not at all. Kanye is a good producer, I'll give him that, but to say that he has the lyrical prowess of flow as Common or guys like Immortal Technique, Chali 2na and even Slug is ridiculous. There are even much better producers, DJ Premier comes to mind. Kanye does have producing talent, but just because he is popular doesn't make him the best around, he is an above average producer and a below average MC.
- ksw420, on 12/11/2008, -7/+14You know, Kanye is on the same level as Common and Lupe, except since he is cocky, everyone decided that he was the ultimate douche bag. For some reason, people see cocky and arrogant people as a threat and want to trash them as much as possible, when most of the time all they are doing is speaking the truth…
- Dawggoneit, on 12/11/2008, -4/+10Bon Iver should have been higher than 29. I hate it when people link, but they are worth checking out.
http://www.blogotheque.net/Bon-Iver,4255
P.S. The people who shoot the take away shows are amazingly talented, and the videos are stunningly beautiful. - Ukonu, on 12/11/2008, -0/+6I'm a HUGE fan of Lupe Fiasco. He's in my top 5 of all time. His lyrics blow Kanye out of the water but even I have to admit that Kanye's production talent more than makes up for his lyrical shortcomings. He just has so many classic beats - neither Common nor Lupe can close to comparing.
Needless to say, when I heard Lupe, Pharell, and Kanye were making a super group I started going crazy with anticipation. - Jenadae, on 12/11/2008, -0/+6"It's suppose to be as politically incorrect and offensive as possible, not educational or meaningful."
LOL wow, learn your roots son. - mittortz, on 12/11/2008, -2/+8He may not be a "genius", but I would like for either of you (Hypo or algae) to give me ONE album that even comes close to comparison with either Girl Talk's Night Ripper or Feed the Animals. Just one.
Forget the hipsters, Girl Talk is the first musical act I can throw around ANYONE in my age group (i'm a college freshman) and have a good chance of getting a really ecstatic response, no matter the gender, type of person, musical preferences, etc.
He's just an amazing amount of fun for anyone, and I've never heard of any other DJ able to achieve that type of universal response. - flyingclutchman, on 12/11/2008, -1/+7lol black people
- boudey, on 12/11/2008, -0/+6Some good picks, like Fleet Foxes and Dear Science, but ultimately buried for excluding Third by Portishead. Seriously, what the ***** is up with that?
- quomen, on 12/11/2008, -1/+6Hip Hop is at 50% production, 50% lyrics. Do you honestly believe the Chronic would be anything without Dre's beats on the tracks? Kanye is one of the most talented producers in the game. His lyrics are usually pretty mediocre, but in most of his songs he manages to ride the flow of the song.. Something many rappers haven't done.
- boardthis, on 12/11/2008, -8/+13metallica? really?
http://digg.com/music/Photographic_Proof_That_Meta ... - Bilbobaggins, on 12/11/2008, -1/+6Wow Guns N' Roses is on there.
- qwertyxuiop, on 12/11/2008, -0/+5apparently very little
- algaeturd, on 12/11/2008, -1/+6MGMT is just another fly by night hipster trend. You'll never hear from them again after the hipsters deem they are played out. (in 2 months)
- fugazied, on 12/11/2008, -2/+7Of course rap is music don't be so close minded. Really life is too short to limit yourself to certain genres of music, to get started with some good rap checkout the roots, if you are a music lover you will enjoy it.
- VagueRant, on 12/11/2008, -2/+7Dugg for The Black Keys in the top 20.
Those guys know how to rock. -
