- ssquared22, on 02/06/2009, -1/+19I think that The Doors reunion is more than likely the most misguided one yet.
- Lokonopa, on 02/06/2009, -5/+20Queen without Freddie Mercury is like Apple without Steve Jobs.
Why bother? - buu2, on 02/07/2009, -1/+11I saw Journey with their new singer. The guy has energy, sounds just like him and has great stage presence. Old fans couldn't even tell it wasn't perry without looking at him. The lead guitarist is the same as the original journey and the concert was still unforgetable.
I also saw lynyrd Skynyrd without van zant and even that was good. A concert doesn't lose its appeal just because some members of the band are dead. If you're just looking for a great night to party with friends and don't care about technicalities, many of these reunion tours are a great way to keep the classic rock alive amid a time of some really terrible rock. - 37prime, on 02/07/2009, -1/+11Some of them are not even "reunions"
Judas Priest w/ "Ripper" Owens was not a reunion.
Van Halen w/ Gary Cherone was not a reunion. - ZombieSociety, on 02/07/2009, -1/+10Yeah. ***** music gives me boners, too.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+9Agreed up until Alice in Chains, where I now feel the need to bury this article.
It's a shame Layne has gone, but they still have Jerry who wrote most of the songs. If you have been watching their studio updates on Myspace you can see they are still writing kick ass songs.
R.I.P Layne - Machoslut, on 02/06/2009, -1/+8I want a Pavement reunion...
- Dancon7, on 02/07/2009, -1/+7The new Blind Melon record kicked ass, BTW.
- m00n1, on 02/07/2009, -3/+8How about Queen fronted by a collection of Digg comments? That would be good. I think.
- ZombieSociety, on 02/07/2009, -1/+6The worse?
- 2Six119, on 09/10/2009, -0/+4I'm still waiting for the ________ reunion tour.
- Halsfield, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5i think its interesting how for most of these bands (except for the ones with dead frontmen) that its the frontman that is stopping the reunion. the bands who lost their frontmen because they died will never be the same(replacing freddie mercury? come on now) are bound to fail because fans just wont accept a new person instead of the original. i just feel bad for the bands who cant come to an agreement and get their original lineup back.
- joebus, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4The Asian copy is pretty good. If you don't like how he isn't Steve Perry, just don't look at them and their will be moments that you forget that it is Arnel Pineda singing and not Steve Perry.
- CarStan, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5buried for not including the'new' Guns'N'Roses
the live performences of the new guitarists are horrible - acdcfanbill, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4yes, and Ripper wasnt that bad, people just whined cause he wasnt halford. Same with him being in Iced Earth.
- uncouthyouth, on 02/07/2009, -4/+8Put it all on one page and I'll digg it. Buried.
- SweetChinMusic, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4*Freddie
- seansmyth, on 02/06/2009, -7/+11INXS was the worse.
- Dundasbro, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Except AC\DC.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Not full of *****, just speaking my mind, bro.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Well said. I'm also well willing to give the surviving musicians a chance to check out what they're doing and respect the fact that they still want to do what they love. It can end up being a bad idea or even blasphemy, but I wouldn't rule out giving a band with a new lead singer a chance any more than if they were Spinal Tap on their tenth different drummer.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3It was ok in my opinion, it wasn't anything like with Shannon but the dude sounded quite like him and it's a lot better than what currently gets played on the radio.
- Dundasbro, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3*cough* AC\DC *cough*
- GunForHireUK, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Agreed - Warren was a great replacement. It was a bit different from their earlier stuff but kept a similar sound. Shame they're on the outs again.
- NotYourProdigy, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3We need some new music.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+4The most epic fail of all pseudo-reunions was Sammy Hagar with Van Halen. I don't even care if that was the version of the band that got them their first #1, in fact, that just validates how ***** horrible that band had become. They went from one of the greatest rock bands ever to a band that could have been writing jingles for Pepsi. They were already headed in a bad direction with their last album with David Lee Roth - 1984 - but once Hagar joined they became an abomination of a once great rock band going radio friendly pop.
The world would be a better place if Van Halen as a band had ended after their first five albums. - empressofmetal, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Those are not reunions.
- monkeyhoward, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Agreed with all except Alice In Chains.
I saw the 2006 AIC show at the Moore Theater in Seattle and it rocked. Absolutely nothing lame about it. - Dundasbro, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Is this the real life...?
- magunra3k, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Queen and Paul Rodgers is not a reunion,For it to be a reunion they would need to reincarnate Freddie.Plus i wouldnt call the current line up ill advised, yes we miss the hell out of Freddie, but he died long before his time and Queen still have alot to offer.
- kampfbereit, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Right on, shikamoo. It was obvious from the get-go that Eddie and Dave were both too big to share the stage. If only they could have become like a brilliant, binary star system, flooding the universe with their co-orbital magnificence. They were a sham-rock corporate rock band after that. IMO: Dave was the ultimate front man for a rock band (backflips, are you ***** kidding me? Who can do that even now? Have you *read* his autobio? That guy is AMAZING!) Eddie is still a screaming eagle of a guitarist, but it's so sad that he decided to take the course that he did. Michael Anthony sat in the back seat keeping his mouth shut, just happy to have a job until they finally booted him for ***** Wolfgang. And smug Alex knows he's got a job forever. Big drum kits notwithstanding, he's a standard fare rock drummer at best. Damn you, Eddie, for ruining one of the greatest rock bands ever.
- NotYourProdigy, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2That is because creativity thrives around a genius.
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -0/+1I saw them on the Superbowl pre game show and it was a WTF moment. He is OK but still on Perry.
- smacksaw, on 02/07/2009, -2/+3Well, I know I'm getting old and these guys are getting even older and time is an issue. Some compromises are ok. You don't have to replace someone to be good. In fact, I find some of these mixes interesting.
Doors+Ian Astbury - Awesome. He's a great singer with tremendous presence.
New Cars - I really wanted to see them. Todd Rundgren is awesome. I'd put his solo work up against Ric Ocasek's any day - and that's not a sleight on Ric.
CCR - Not that I like them anyway, but who are these people calling themselves CCR?
Journey - Steve Perry is such an ass that he turned me off to them. This Pineda fellow is legit. What are people complaining about? A guy who sounds like Steve Perry, is less cheesy and isn't a giant douchebag. Tell me, what exactly is the problem here? Look at Journey. They actually look like they like their frontman!
Dead Kennedys - Yeah, that is just wrong. Without Jello Biafra...though he loses points with me for not taking care of his band.
Alice in Chains - To me, they'll always be Jerry Cantrell's band. Now if it was a Mad Season reuinion, that might be strange. AIC needs to go on and I trust Jerry to do the right thing. But if this new guy sucks...
Blind Melon - Can't they just fade back into obscurity?
Queen + Paul Rodgers - Queen was not just Freddie Mercury. I really like Paul Rodgers A LOT. That is a cool combination. I like when there are two prolific artists getting together to keep the music alive. You get someone else's take. I mean, if the idea sucked, why does Ringo Starr keep making bank touring with his All-Starr band?
Van Halen - Let's just say it now: There is no vocalist for Van Halen. As long as they pick people with talent, rock on.
INXS - They are so much more than Michael Hutchence and JD Fortune sounds great. The only problem is that they got started way too late. I wish that INXS had not missed a beat. They should be up there with U2 today. They should have toured and recorded with any established vocalist they could find.
Judas Priest - Again, that Owens guy sounded great. He looks better than Rob does. I love Priest, I love Rob, I'm glad they got back together, but I'm glad they didn't stop, either.
I don't think this article is that great because it doesn't pick acts that are only a vocalist. These are mostly strong bands in spite of who fronts them. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2I was highly skeptical of Val Kilmer in the movie and was completely blown away by his performance. I also enjoyed catching shows of a local So. Cal. band called Wild Child which had a dead ringer for Jim and was at one time the highest grossing band on the local club circuit. I wouldn't be opposed to checking out Ian Astbury on a purely philosophical level. Kind of embarrassing though when your drummer sues and wins and gets you to change your name from The Doors of the 21st Century.
- mr5150, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1should have seen that coming....urghhh
- Pake, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2Agreed as well. Not anything like Shannon, but still a great album. Love the song With the Right Set of Eyes.
- CNAIF, on 02/07/2009, -0/+190% of them look like grampa's that are going through male menopause and can't let go of their youth.
Normal guys that hit their 50's buy corvettes and date 18 year olds, oh yea and grow a pony tail because they think it hides the baldness in the front. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1I thought the dude absolutely killed on the Super Bowl pregame. Considering Perry's age (assume the vocal range probably isn't there any more) and the fact that he hasn't been on the scene for a long time, I'd say Arnel's probably better than the original at this stage.
- dawndaemon, on 02/08/2009, -1/+2Because they still rock?
I did wish that Freddie was alive and singing on the concert, but nevertheless they gave us one of the greatest concerts ever. And, as /moothemagiccow/ said, the Queen was 4 man bend where even the bassist made fantastic songs (I said /even/ because only Deacon is not really considered a legend of his trade).
My suggestion is to go and get Brian's solo albums and listen to the songs like Back to the Light, Resurrection, Too much love will kill you (ok, this one was released by the Queen also)... - BobFromReboot, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1They would have been way better if Mike Patton joined like they wanted, instead of doing some reality show.
- ziv36, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Completely agree, Queen can still rock without the greatest frontman of all time.
- ziv36, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1If you ACTUALLY SAW THE SHOW you would disagree, i'll miss Freddie forever but the show rocked never the less.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1Wow, so much to respond to there. I feel for Eddie, because Dave must have gotten erratic to the point that they just couldn't deal with him any more, leading them to make the decision that he had to go, and then later that the reunion was not going to work . . .
Yeah, I watched a video of them during the Hagar years and at the point where Hagar starts running around going, "Uh oh! I think we have a 5150 in the house! Someone call 5150! . . . " It was just too embarrassing to watch. The music was even worse though, despite the flashes of brilliance from Eddie and Alex, the songwriting was just so disgustingly commercial . . .
I never heard about the blowup between Michael Anthony and Wolfgang, but I think he's pretty underrated as a bass player and those backup vocals he sang . . . you could have chosen from the entire world of rock bass players singing backup and I don't think you could find a single one that was a more perfect fit for that band. - mzieg, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1Agreed. Innuendo rocked. Just because one guy passes on doesn't mean you let the dream die.
- thefbimonkey, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1Little music that is actually worth listening has been made recently. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part the current music scene is complete *****.
- tidu, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1Queen's a lot more than their later pop hits...
- moothemagiccow, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1the live performances of the old guitarists werent that great either
- gadmo, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1the people who've seen the performances seem not to agree with you. all the 2002 shows sold out and then all the 2006 shows sold out - and they were remarkably well received. go ahead - google the reviews... do you think that as much of a perfectionist as axl is, that he wouldn't hire guitarists who could do the songs justice?
(seen gnr in almost every incarnation, and so far, they've been great every time...) -
