- benroy, on 01/20/2009, -4/+13373.6% of all statistics are made-up.
- GoKings, on 01/20/2009, -5/+96In other news, 95% of music is garbage that most people wouldn't buy anyways.
- 0tis, on 01/20/2009, -1/+79I always wonder how they get these figures, especially taking into account that infringement notices have apparently been sent to networked printers in the past.
- PHiZ187, on 01/20/2009, -3/+73C'mon guys, we can do better!
- benroy, on 01/20/2009, -3/+72It's okay, you technically have to be eighteen to join Digg. You're allowed to say ***** and *****.
You are also allowed to say piss, *****, *****, *****, *****, turd, fart & *****. - 4321234, on 01/20/2009, -3/+59***** THE IFPI !!!
- RunDiggMC, on 01/20/2009, -3/+47In other news, 51 percent of people are in the majority.
- directoryweb, on 01/20/2009, -0/+33The statistics are inflated to invoke fear into the politicians so that tougher laws are made. Three strikes is a joke. Really what they want is to take your home, life savings, and first born if you have downloaded a song and not paid for it. Granted, artists are entitled to compensation. But financially destroying lives because of illegal downloads is just plain lame.
- jakash, on 01/20/2009, -5/+35In other news, 100% of people who actually pay for music are being ripped off by corporate 'fat-cat' record companies.
- Double-Z, on 01/20/2009, -1/+28Well, they make a bucket load of cash with their 5%. Considering the tripe that record companies produce these days, they should feel lucky with that, and STFU.
- timusca, on 01/20/2009, -2/+28But remember, 95% of all downloads don't equal 95% lost sales.
- KevinRosa, on 01/20/2009, -1/+25MTV killed the music industry not pirates
- umbrellainabin, on 01/20/2009, -6/+29***** THE RIAA!!!!
***** THE MPAA!!!!
***** THE IFPI!!!!
***** THE BFI!!!! - PopcornDave, on 01/20/2009, -1/+22It's easy and you can do it at home too. All you have to do is drop your pants, bend over and pull statistics out of your ass.

- IphtashuFitz, on 01/20/2009, -0/+19And yet a government study finds that the net effect of P2P use is positive (yeah, ok, so it's the Dutch government, but it's a government just the same):
http://digg.com/security/Dutch_government_study_ne ...
And a judge has ruled that 17,000 illegal downloads does NOT equate to 17,000 lost sales to RIAA members:
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20090119-judg ...
The RIAA, IFPI, etc. should relax and try embracing current technologies rather than trying to keep a grasp on old methods that no longer apply. - MrTankJump, on 01/20/2009, -2/+18You mean nice George Carlin reference.
- kurtwinter, on 01/20/2009, -0/+15So 5% of all music downloads generate a ***** of cash for the music industry. I wish the ***** could take basic economics - a person who pays $0.00 for something might not pay $0.99 for it. A download =/ a lost sale.
- lemur, on 01/20/2009, -1/+15It sounds fair... after all, 95% of music is not actually worth paying for.
- insanebrain, on 01/20/2009, -0/+13Stuck at 96%.. . SEED PLEAZE !!!
- edwarddouglas, on 01/20/2009, -0/+13The music industry is still pissed off they can't make people buy a $18 CD with 1 hit and the rest filler music? They surely could not believe that was gonna last forever.
- sicnarfKYBLEHS, on 01/20/2009, -17/+28no f#$&^*ing sh(#*&t sherlock...
- Nastymunky, on 01/20/2009, -0/+11Anyone else noticed?.. its the RECORD COMPANIES that complain ... not the artistes...
Hell I wouldn't know Finnish rock bands EXIST ... if not for p2p...
Then I wouldn't have been able to attend their concerts here either... (which i did) - mikepictor, on 01/20/2009, -2/+12You don't need to be any particular age to read it though.
Whether or not that will influence you is another matter. Personally, I can make a point with fairly clean language. - killdashnine, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10Are people still buying CDs? (Answer = YES) ... Then STFU!
- zeitgueist, on 01/20/2009, -3/+12Yes, every single person on earth, even the huge amount that don't have access to the internet, dowloaded 8 songs each. Right....
- MRintheKeys, on 01/20/2009, -0/+9Remember the two way words as well.
You after all can say, "I just pricked my finger," but it is never ok to say, "I just fingered my prick." - outoforder, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8In a perfect world, every artist would be paid for every download. But the world isn't perfect, and it never will be. It's impossible to prevent the distribution of digital music. Artists and record labels will be forced to adapt. They already are.
- alexnb185, on 01/20/2009, -5/+1395% of statistics are total ***** :)
- Stevin, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8no, that is not, true.
- Bhatch514, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8There are two things in this world i can not stand.... Those that do not respect other peoples cultures, and the Dutch.
- GVR90, on 01/20/2009, -2/+10100% of the time.
- breadfred, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8How else would you find out?
- slayernine, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8Yesterday they were saying only 85%.
- doctordbx, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7I downloaded 50 gig of music last week.... so I think I made up for India.
- Valyn, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Considering 95% of the music I download gets deleted (its not worth the disk space), im extremely happy about not paying for it.
- Bloake, on 01/20/2009, -2/+895%?! That's it?!
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+7I really love these four-letter acronyms. They roll right off the tongue.
- eclectro, on 01/20/2009, -1/+7Hey IFPI, here's an idea. Go to the place where all the piracy is taking place - China. Invade that country to take care of it. Because if the US had a 96% piracy rate that would mean that 225 billion dollars is being stolen. - which is equal to the roughly half the budget of the defense department. FAIL.
- Finalreminder, on 01/20/2009, -3/+9So artists wont be able to buy a microphone and process music on a PC?
And they'd probably have to go out and get a job?
You mean Elton John would have to go and earn a living
JESUS CHRIST!!!!!
***** the music industry, it's a dinosaur that no-one needs anymore.
Viva la Virals! - Kyrgizion, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5I concur! 40 billion? That's peanuts! Next year I want to see a global statistic of at least 80 billion.
That'll show 'em. - mikepictor, on 01/20/2009, -2/+7you'll be dug down of course, but you're right.
I have pirated some music in my time, but at least I make not attempt to justify it. It's wrong, pure and simple. Music that I'd value listening to, is worth contributing to.
to all the pirates out there, you're welcome, some of us need to contribute. - Ninnux, on 01/20/2009, -2/+7I heard that 38.95% of writers misuse commas in sentences.
- po43292, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5VH1 followed right behind them in putting that last nail in.
- arkaycee, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5My printer just keeps downloading old sh*t by The Inkspots.
- Stevin, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5dugg, cause I'd like to see the IFPI invade China.
- Grayfox777, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5I couldn't agree more.
- JAGUART, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5Nobody expects the IFPI !
"Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical obsession to illegal downloads, and an acronym name that no one knows what stands for." - rda1441, on 01/20/2009, -1/+5And how does this affect the users who don't have a secure enough wifi or some such thing. To be honest, even WEP and what not can be pretty easily cracked.
Maybe if they looked at their own business model they would realize what their problem is.
Oh, and stop making music that sucks. - gemlarin, on 01/20/2009, -1/+5Again,
I think measures should be taken to avert illegal file sharing, but the RIAA has gone about it the wrong way for years, often going after innocent people.
I decided a long time ago that .99 a song was a fair price and have been purchasing digital music ever since. As a teenager, when I wanted a new tape (yeah I said tape), I saved the money from my part time job to get it. I did not walk into the store, put it in my pocket, and walk out without paying. However, If I did, and I got caught, the music industry would certainly not have threatened me with a $3000 lawsuit over it. -
