- sorrow, on 04/07/2008, -1/+278FTA - "Overall, 95% of the 1,158 people surveyed had engaged in some form of copying, including taking the music contents of a friend's hard drive - 58% - and the more old-fashioned method of recording from the radio."
Wait, are people are really still recording music from the radio??? - badwithcomputer, on 04/07/2008, -4/+280only 95 percent? i'd expect that number to be higher
- itsmattgw, on 04/07/2008, -13/+221In related news, 95% of music today is not worth purchasing.
- Spuby, on 04/07/2008, -29/+20195% of the "modern music" doesn't deserve to be labeled as music
- mtdaugherty, on 04/07/2008, -2/+167the other 5 % = deaf
- TomK88, on 04/07/2008, -7/+146Even if CDs were free I would still download music. It is more convenient. Until the music industry adopts a new business model they will continue to get pounded into the ground.
- knde, on 04/07/2008, -0/+91I remember doing this when I was around 12 or so.
There used to a weekly UK Top 40 music programme that would play all the newest songs. And I would perch right by the radio, just waiting for the right moment to press record. Then I would hurriedly press stop when the radio host started talking near the end of the song.
That seems like forever ago! - TheAttacks, on 04/07/2008, -3/+93It's because we rock.
- cheerio, on 04/07/2008, -1/+77FTA "People aged 18-24 keep around £750-worth of unpaid-for music on their MP3 players."
Hence why people download it. Should an mp3 player full of songs seriously cost you that much ***** money? - dtele, on 04/07/2008, -2/+71I bet the other 5% are up to no good also.
/ grumbles about 'no-good' kids of today... - inactive, on 04/07/2008, -4/+7283% of all statistics are inaccurate.
- pradaaddict, on 04/07/2008, -0/+61The other 5% don't have regular access to the internet or simply don't know how
- ravage86, on 04/07/2008, -6/+63If the majority of people are breaking the law, then the law needs to be changed.

- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 04/07/2008, -0/+47wait...
Is there a legal way to copy music? With the rules we have today, I don't think I can do anything legally. - Dmarzio, on 04/07/2008, -3/+50But did your parents enjoy the music you listened to when you were a teen?
- Greengoo, on 04/07/2008, -3/+50Are we still talking about music???
- quadvods, on 04/08/2008, -0/+44the other 5% probably thought the survey was a trap...

- alloystudios, on 04/07/2008, -8/+51MUSIC IS FREE
- flossdaily, on 04/07/2008, -0/+43The more interesting number is the percentage of kids who think that downloading music is wrong. This study puts the number at a mere 8%; http://www.cmta.com/research.htm
The problem is, we have had people telling kids for years that illegal downloading is akin to shoplifting, but petty theft like that actually deprives the store of something. The crime is more like reading the newspaper at a news stand and then refusing to buy it. It you were never going to buy it in the first place, and the news stand can still sell it, where is the harm?
The only real damage I see is a case where someone would have bought the music, had it not been available for free- in which case the illegal distributor of the music has deprived the legal distributor of some profit.
Of course, we live in a world where legal music distributors have been charging unbelievably high prices for our entire lives, and we have absolutely no sympathy for their plight. By the same token, we reject their argument that we are depriving the artists of their portion of the profits. We know that the music distribution machine really doesn't give artists a significant portion of the sales profits, and we also know that bands benefit from having their music distributed for free because it increases name recognition and sales for concerts, where real earnings can happen.
The problem is that music distribution is becoming a thing of the past- and distributors are middle men in world where there is no need for an intermediary between creator and consumer.
There is a place for these mammoth companies- they are still needed for marketing and production- but this is a much smaller piece of the pie. Someday they will have to adopt a more realistic business model- one where artists sell their own music online, and collect whatever profits they can from that venture, and go on to make real money selling out concert halls. - JustJoe4Life, on 04/08/2008, -0/+38There's a 5% margin of error.
- jayobear, on 04/07/2008, -0/+36Tree? Tree the RIAA? Now that doesn't make sense AT ALL!
- PeterODactyl, on 04/07/2008, -3/+38I've been illegally copying music longer than 100% of 18-24 year olds have been alive.
- HydrogenOxide, on 04/07/2008, -0/+35***** censorship
- ElBeh, on 04/07/2008, -2/+32Yeah, me too. I wonder how that number is in contrast with 13-17 year olds.
- WiseWeasel, on 04/07/2008, -3/+32iTunes isn't available in a lot of countries (the UK excepted in this case), and DRM-free online music stores are only available in the US as far as I'm aware, and I personally wouldn't bother with any other kind of purchased music downloads...

- dubbleenerd, on 04/07/2008, -1/+29Exactly, I can't see why these money-hungry bastards don't see that basic point. Do they seriously expect to make $1000 from each kid?
- Tyorant, on 04/07/2008, -0/+28That's why we download the classics too...
- fkr3, on 04/07/2008, -11/+37They have adopted business models where you can download music. For a long time now. It takes one click to buy and download a song on iTunes.
- jayobear, on 04/07/2008, -2/+27Touche.
- LLamaStar, on 04/07/2008, -3/+27sounds like you're more of an idiot than bush...lol.
- omgosh, on 04/07/2008, -1/+25Well, I'm a teen and I torrent ALOT of music. However, I just purchased a CD over amazon, I only did that because I was able to hear it first. What a lot of people don't realise is that if I didn't download torrents the number of CDs bought would be 0 because as with other teens I don't have money to throw around without knowing how good an album is.
- orlyfactor, on 04/07/2008, -1/+23The other 5% fall way to the left hand side of the bell curve, probably can't figure out how to do it.

That's a bit out of the discretionary budget for most 18-25 year olds. iTunes are overpriced. A workable business model would involve a $20 or $30 subscription fee with unlimited sharing, just like Napster tried to establish back in the late 90's.
If you can't afford it, don't steal? Fine. When 95% of a population is doing something, it's difficult to make the moral argument. If I were to try and sell air for $1 a breath, and a bunch of punk kids were breathing air for free, a moral appeal would seem very silly. - chmcarro, on 04/07/2008, -1/+21http://www.wrigley.com/wrigley/products/products_o ...
- SurlyDuff, on 04/07/2008, -0/+19Especially considering that this study encompasses the ages of 18-24...oh wait...no...you're just retarded and/or illiterate.
- SpinningHead, on 04/07/2008, -0/+19I believe the term, "we rock" is copyrighted by Epic Records. Please cease and desist or the RIAA will be forced to take further action.

- dmadzak, on 04/07/2008, -3/+21(Sigh) I don't even know why I bothered responding to this.
1) Yeah because importing a CD from iTunes is much more difficult that torrenting music and having to manually import it into iTunes. Bush manages to get himself elected, but can't figure out how to hit the burn CD button. He's socially awkward and verbally challenged, but if he was stupid, he wouldn't be in the White House. Go read the Art of War to understand how Democrats screwed this one up and get back to me. How he governed, well that is a different story which has already been well defined and debated.
2) I'd hope that we would provide a staff assistant to the president to handle this anyways. While this would be overkill for a Congressman, I don't see it as unreasonable for a president to have a staff assistant for stuff like this, given (what should be) a very time consuming and exhausting job.
3) I'm bored with Bush jokes and Bill Clinton jokes. - NickMilne, on 04/07/2008, -1/+19[Citation Needed]

- sporad1c, on 04/07/2008, -0/+17And the best part is you can sue the entire age group and get 15 bucks, half a bottle of whiskey, and a joint. Go piracy! Down with the RIAA!
