- musicmaverick, on 07/28/2008, -2/+53def leppard was heavy metal?
- screamingjoker, on 07/28/2008, -4/+40Metallica was the Cadillac of Heavy Metal in the 80's. Everyone else was either doing out of date 70's *****, or MTV type things with their hair. Def Leppard had one good record, about the same time as Thriller came out, so I equate Def Leppard forever with Braces and Junior High. Judas Priest, bascially did the same tour and album for 20 years, but left their mark by unknowingly being part of the best 80's Rock-Dock Ever, The infamous: Heavy Metal Parking Lot!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhRCVm-1r2k). Then ***** devolved into what you see here, Twisted Sister Vs. Whitesnake. Both bands not really influencing much, (but Dee lives in my town and is cool as hell). But by then Metallica owned true speed metal and Guns N Roses came in and smashed whatever was left. Rock needed GNR to transition between Metal, Hardcore &Rock and Roll to get us into the 90's where we could go postmodern on all this ***** and get to bands like Pantera. Special Shout-out to LEMMY! That MF is the ultimate Metal MF!
- wtfhacksDan, on 07/29/2008, -5/+34Maiden vs Guns ‘N Roses..... LOL, Guns ‘N Roses are nothing compared to the power of Maiden.
- Technoloki, on 07/29/2008, -0/+25Would like to know Iron Maiden vs. Metallica. That's UK vs US imo.
- PhoneJack, on 07/29/2008, -2/+27When I first heard Master Of Puppets I shat bricks. Ah, nostalgia.
- sathias, on 07/29/2008, -1/+19What, no Anthrax?
- Pirate45, on 07/29/2008, -2/+18Def Leppard is beating the ***** Motley Crue? Wow.
- Adsf111222, on 07/29/2008, -0/+15Yeah, lets just ignore that they grew up in Australia, formed in Australia, cut their teeth in Australia and that their first three albums didn't even get released out side of Australia. And remember that AC/DC stopped being AC/DC after Bon died. What they have now is good but the new guy ain't Bon.
AC/DC not Australian, there fighting words.
R.I.P. Bon Scott.
P.S. the English can have the Bee Gee's and Peter Andre. - steveoco, on 07/29/2008, -5/+19AC/DC british? Yeah and the queen rides a kangaroo! -wankers
- tokabowla, on 07/29/2008, -2/+15Ozzy vs Metallica?!! Might as well try & pick which hand to cut off! One I use to write, the other... weeeeeelllll. ;)
- skippy562, on 07/29/2008, -0/+12YEA...cant agree with you anymore
it kinda pissed me off they compared them and a lot of people picked GnR. - phre3k187, on 07/29/2008, -0/+12Megadeth vs Saxor hahahahha
- douglasnewman, on 07/28/2008, -1/+13Not an easy poll to create, I imagine, but good job. Overall I think the match ups are right on. Never a fan of Van Halen so I'm hoping for Black Sabbath to be a dark horse and upset the prissies from LA. Come on England, you gonna get behind Saxon or what?
- Bo0st510, on 07/28/2008, -18/+29WhhaaatT!!! No Hanah Montana!! or Jonas BrotherS?
- SirBrittanicus, on 07/29/2008, -5/+16What has nine arms and sucks?
Def Leppard!
*ba dum pshhh* - Coffeedemon, on 07/29/2008, -1/+12Blasphemy. Appetite was a great album but compare it to Number of the Beast? Jaysus...
As for record sales go check the ***** thats at the top of the heap every week. - protogenxl, on 07/29/2008, -0/+11I have to say a lot of Judas Priest songs take on new and frightening meanings when you add the fact that Rob Halford is gay.
- ro0ster, on 07/29/2008, -0/+10GnR should..
♫ RUN TO THE HILLSSSSSSSSSS - darkchild82, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10Metal and then pop rock...but yeah, I wouldn't call them 'heavy metal' as well.
- metfuel, on 07/29/2008, -3/+13Oh let me get this straight a band that you really cant tell the difference between album to album hasn't ever sucked? Slayer may be fast, but sorry when you play the same ***** over and over AND over yeah your gonna be fast. I never bought into the Slayer rules all philosophy. The production sounds *****, the vocals suck. I will give it to them they are fast. But hell I could put a turd on a rocket and call it fast but it's still *****.
- Andyschism, on 07/29/2008, -0/+9Up the Irons.
- CAisBacK, on 07/29/2008, -1/+10Yes a music list that doesn't have lil Wayne
- Coffeedemon, on 07/29/2008, -1/+10I had to go with Metallica. We are talking the 80s here when their output was unmatched. Ozzy had some great songs on his own but was more inconsistent.
- ordig, on 07/29/2008, -1/+9No Venom?
- VinnieDaMac, on 07/29/2008, -1/+9Does that make their music any less great? Real music fans should still be able to appreciate a band's music whether or not they agree with what the band does.
- blindmelon1, on 07/29/2008, -1/+9Real fans also buy the record, the anti downloading stance only pissed off the people who think they deserved everything for free.
- r00db0y, on 07/29/2008, -0/+8WHAT IS THAT?! A TWISTED SISTER PIN ON YOUR UNIFORM?!
- gossipmonkey, on 07/28/2008, -7/+15nice matchups! Def Leppard wins over Motley Crue any day though. fa sure!
- c0mputar, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7Keyword is "metal". Any genre with the word "rock" in it and the polls would be crawling with brits.
- Dkrainey, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7I wanna ROCK!!
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7What a great period of music..Metal will always kick ass!
- mikemarino, on 07/29/2008, -6/+12USA = Slayer
NO CONTEST! - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -7/+13***** them all Mercyful Fate/ King Diamond rules!!!!!!11!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpX-QdG3hgU - macbookpromat, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6END OF PASSION PLAY!
- Carthagefield, on 07/28/2008, -6/+12"the ’80s will always be remembered for metal music, most of it (aside from such massive bands as Scorpions and AC/DC) coming out of the United States and United Kingdom."
Alright, I know that AC/DC was formed in Australia, but weren't all of it's founder members British ex-pats? I think that counts for something. ***** it, I'm claiming AC/DC for Britain! By way of recompense, the land of the criminals may now adopt the Bee Gees as one of their own (please?). - Kflo, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7Like many great bands before them, their mistake was in moving outside what they do best which is write and play masterful music. It was their apple records.
They didn't know what they were doing. Just listen to Ride the Lightning and it's easy to see that they were geniuses, just when they stuck to what they did best - legitimize and uphold metal.
Seriously... you could count the people that have ever been able to write like that on your fingers and toes. - bundwallah, on 07/29/2008, -2/+8G n R couldn't hack sticking around long enough to really cash in on their success. What's left of G n R is a joke. I'll take Velvet Revolver over Axl's bastardization of a once great band. In that matchup, Maiden deserved my vote for kicking ass for so long.
- samyoungguitar, on 07/29/2008, -3/+9Sorry, Iron Maiden rules them all.
- Dkrainey, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7The Crue is so much better than One Armed Drummer. I listen to almost strictly Death Metal but "Dr. Feel Good" melts faces.
- musicmaverick, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6hee well i found it funny?
- Ooddiey, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Dio?
- ottos13, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5ram it down
- Baronvontito1, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Hard as Iron
- wattersm, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5There's plenty of good metal bands here if you look, a lot of it is nu-metal or metalcore though. Lamb of God, Chimaira, Between the Buried and Me, etc. The best stuff is still from Scandinavia or Britain, nothing can touch them.
- Jergens, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Point of Entry
- MixMastaKooz, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Kiss "Creatures of the Night" was the first album (actually it was a cassette) that I ever bought! I was 8 years old. My parents were either laughing their asses off or seriously worried about me (probably both).
- retawd, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6It doesn't matter because AC/DC isn't metal.
- csrster, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5I was a Heavy Metal fan in the UK in the 1980s and I would dispute the claim that metal was in any sense "mainstream" in the UK at that time. Metal fans were a small and despised minority. In fact rock of any kind was deeply out of fashion and relegated to the arse-end of broadcast airtime. (Thank ***** for John Peel and Tommy Vance maytheyrestinpeace.) If you want to know what mainstream British music was like the 1980s you don't have to look far to find out. Just google on "rickroll".
- justice7, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5***** lemmy! \m/
You cannot go wrong with Motorhead and Metallica. All the snub-nosed "metallica sucks they tried to sue me for napster" douchebags can ***** salt.
Check out missionmetallica.com , ALL KINDS of free and LEGIT downloads there of metallica's live music. The only thing that isn't there are their studio recordings. You guys have to remember, Metallica are not computer nerds, so they didn't see things the same way you did. They saw a change in the music industry, and their record studio was likely short changing them citing piracy for cutbacks. No one said they're smart, but they sure can make my head bang.
