- terminal157, on 08/20/2008, -2/+102Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower is just about the best example there is of a cover outdoing the original. Even Dylan thought it was superior. Other than that, a decent list.
- Cdog923, on 08/20/2008, -4/+61Um, when the original artist (Dylan) even thinks that the cover ("Watchtower") done by another artist (Hendrix) is superior to the original, it makes you look like a tool when you include it on a list such as this.
- jokr004, on 08/21/2008, -2/+41I shot the sheriff... Marley>Clapton
- etoiles, on 08/21/2008, -2/+29Richard Cheese blows all originals away
- USAOwnz, on 08/20/2008, -5/+30I'm sorry, but as much as I like Dylan. Hendrix>Dylan easy.
- maximilen, on 08/20/2008, -3/+27Word. Especially Smooth Criminal.
One slight exception: The Donnie Darko song "Mad World" was originally Tears for Fears, and great, but the remake used in the movie is amazing as well. - palehorse864, on 08/20/2008, -2/+24The originals are almost always better than the remake. However, I think the Hendrix version of "all along the watchtower" was superior to Dylan's
- billbugger, on 08/20/2008, -6/+27WTF is up with country music needing to redo R&B tracks?
What they can't come up with more songs about their dead dog? - phunlee, on 08/20/2008, -0/+18Where's the rest of your life story? It's fascinating.
- fuzzmeister, on 08/21/2008, -0/+17Even Reznor has said that it has essentially become Cash's song.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -4/+20Because...it is
- ToddSchishler, on 08/21/2008, -1/+16I don't care if Tina was more famous for it, Proud Mary always sounds better when Fogerty sings it.
- obliviousfool, on 08/20/2008, -1/+15Indeed. Bob now does the song more like a tribute to Jimi. Bob's original recording still rocks though, and a lot of people have never heard it.
- MrChunks, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14You've got to be ***** joking, right?
- thebrinkman, on 08/21/2008, -0/+14Where the ***** is Come Together? Aerosmith < The Beatles. exponentially. Also, Tainted Love.
- mbelleghem, on 08/20/2008, -2/+14As soon as I saw this I was hoping to see Talk Talk's "It's My Life" on the list.
Gwen Annoyafani added nothing to that tune, and took out the hooky synth riff. For shame....
Scissor Sister's "Comfortably Numb" should be on this list, too. Not so much Williams' cover of Tangerine Dream's "Love on a Real Train", though. - Natnie, on 08/21/2008, -1/+13Killing Me Soflty
Roberta Flack > Lauryn Hill - Asianwaste, on 08/21/2008, -0/+12Ugh anyone remember Sheryl Crow's version of Sweet Child of Mine? It almost made me puke... then about a year ago, I heard the chick version of Nirvana's Come As You Are. Dunno who did the crime, don't want to know.
- ZackScott, on 08/20/2008, -3/+14Add to this list "I Think I'm Alone Now." The original version is just so much better than the 80s version. I actually sand the original version in Hawaii on a cruise ship during Karaoke. Now I know I'm not a good singer (people say I have the voice, just not a good one). But singing it up there was so fun, and I think people were truly surprised at the showing of my spirit. I really got into the singing although I was nervous to be up there. Anyway, it was recorded on video tape, and I recently took that video tape and used a configuration to record it onto my computer which I then turned into .mp3 and .ogg formats. I mainly listen to that version now because I like it when the audience goes "wooo!"
So basically, I'm singing "but look at the waaaaaaaayyyy..." and then you hear "wooo!" So now if I ever hear that song on the oldies station, instead of singing along to the words, I actually sing the background audience vocals. Pretty weird, but sometimes time does fly. - TheBigBad, on 08/21/2008, -2/+13I celebrate the guy's entire catalog.
- wtfhacksDan, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10I don't see anything wrong with Santana's version of Oye Como Va. Their both really good.
- iamanalog, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10Limp bizkit makes good music?
- Iztikeit, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9Otis Redding had soul, Michael Bolton is soulless and balllless.
- regression, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9What about sympathy for the devil? the janes addiction version was really good but not quite as good as the stones.
- PeaTearGryphon, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9no you didn't
- OhROFL, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Scissor Sister's "Comfortably Numb" sucks a fat, juicy ***** compared to Pink Floyd's incomparable masterpiece.
- mexicanman07, on 08/21/2008, -2/+10i disagree i think johny cash's hurt is a much better cover
- llamagod, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Avril Lavigne's cover of Chop Suey was possibly the worst I've ever heard.
- tinybubs, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9I always liked Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes better than Elvis' cover version.
- freehunter, on 08/21/2008, -6/+14Because it had more feeling, it was a true song for Cash. It was emo whining from Reznor.
- ZombieSociety, on 08/21/2008, -3/+11Um, no, it makes you look like you think for yourself and don't base your life on what Bob Dylan says.
- stubear, on 08/21/2008, -5/+13Sorry but the Santana version of Oye Como Va is MUUUUUCH better. Santans's guitar chops make the song what it is.
- ElBeh, on 08/21/2008, -6/+13Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt" is better than the original? What the *****?
- bmoretz82, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Buried because you listen to Michael Bolton.
- diespectra, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Who the hell are you to judge it to not be true for Reznor? It is emo when he does it but when Cash did it, it wasn't because he did it with more feeling? When emo stands for emotional?
- humperdeath, on 08/21/2008, -2/+85:15 by the Who is so much better than the Limp Bizkit version
in fact so does the original Pinball wizard blow away the Elton John version. - hiikeeba, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7Because today's country music is really 70s rock and R&B.
- danthepiercer, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6...and then what happened?!
- Csaliture, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7I on the other hand like them both
- SkippyDoorknob, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7What about Dolly Parton's original version of "I Will Always Love You"? At least I can tolerate it over Whitney Houston's ear bleeding version.
- TheBigBad, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Full moon or not, she comes into my house and she'll get two in the chest and one to the head.
- ashfish, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6You broke my brain at the thought of Scissor Sisters doing "Comfortably Numb," I had to listen to it since I didn't know they had done that. My soul has died a little because of it.
- Junior612, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7Now, and article with taste!
This should be re-named: 7 Originals Worth Pirating because the Remakes Suck - nighthawk8713, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley. Nuff said.
- jgtg32a, on 08/21/2008, -2/+7Because most R&B artists are no talent hacks
- JoeB4ever, on 08/21/2008, -3/+8someone hasn't heard Celine Dion doing "you shook me al night long"
or scissor sisters doing "comfortably numb" - Asianwaste, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5I just youtubed him... OMFG I thank you for the introduction.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Check out Seger's original version from the album, 'Back in '72' for an interesting insight on how that song developed. Seger's version from 'Live Bullet' is the one most people know and associate with Seger. And it's a great version. Alto Reed's sax really sells the hook on the live version in a way that it didn't quite do on the original, but the original version has a more somber and somehow kinda authentic vibe that really makes you feel like you're listening to a guy who wants to get the hell off the tour bus. Although there is kind of a cool irony to the live version. Like, "No, man...you aren't ever getting off the tour bus."
- Jayg28, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Soul man by Sam & Dave > The Blues Brothers
- TheBigBad, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6There is no best version of "I Think I'm Alone Now". They all suck.
As far as your post, I think you put more thought into that specific song than the song's original authors did. -
