- Sifter, on 01/17/2008, -1/+32Cool article - no Theremin though, which is a shame
- dagnabbit, on 01/17/2008, -0/+15The Hang - I saw a guy playing this on the street in Amsterdam, and it was ***** great. There are some good YouTube videos of people playing it, like this one:

- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6Bagpipes were invented as a weapon. the horrible noise was supposed to scare away enemies.
- Tyr7BE, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6Seriously. Theramin is much more deserving than digeridoo.
- Ninjao, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5I like the sound of the Hang :)
Good to know people are still coming up with new music instruments these days! - inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd58pPgmivI&feature ...
Wow, dude played a background drum track just to set the tempo and hooked up a contact mic to his Hang Drum. This is WICKED... O.o - Error601, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4No hurdy gurdy?
- Purin, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3No Rusty Trombone either :/
- mooseofshadows, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3yeah, that was exactly what I was expecting when I opened it up. The Pixies wouldn't have been the same without a theremin.
- sarazen, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3The bonang is a wonderful instrument. Gamelan is great to listen to as well.
- TomFrost, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3What they DIDN'T tell you about Franklin's Glass Armonica is how many people died from playing it too much. Back then, the glass contained lead which poisoned any dedicated players.
- VomitFlowers, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2No waterphone?
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2DO WANT.
- Myonosken, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Wish they still allowed web purchases of Hangs.
- Lectrik, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2The Tubulum wasn't mentioned (Blue Man Group's instrument).
I like the way it sounds. - AuburnTigers, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3The Glass Armonica sounds like background music from of The Legend of Zelda. Like when you'd find a Great Fairy or something.
- TomFrost, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Listening to that reminded me distinctly of the soundtrack of Monkey Island 3 (or was it 4?). I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is what they used instead of a steel drum.
- Teaboy, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Portico Quartet use Hangs. They sound amazing.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Which came first, the joint or the instrument?
- febryle, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/index.html
- moletimer, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Or Led Zeppelin. I've seen Led Zep tribute bands use Theremins on a number of occasions, and every time it has been awesome :P
- Eskapismus, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Here's the official page of the hang-drum. It seems there are a lot of scammers around selling fake hangs on ebay.
http://www.hang-music.com/index.php - MonkCanatella, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1if you play them all backwards, you get a message from the devil!
- Thud, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Q: How do you get 2 bagpipers in tune?
A: Shoot one.
Having said that, here's some AC/DC on the pipes like you've never heard before:
Fast forward to 5:05 in the video for Thunderstruck
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTjde9Bi6S0 - gummih, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yes the Hang is very interesting, I've seen it a few times in Barcelona
- Aidanjalali, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Duduk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn5nUVhIgQk
Xaphoon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh5nBb1H38c
Both of them should really be in there somewhere, 'cause I've never met anyone that knows what either are. - davewashere, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Hangs are so awesome. Too bad they are made in limited quantities and sell for $10,000+ on eBay.
- MonkCanatella, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1What's funny about this comment is that I don't know whether It's a joke, or if he's actually serious.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I have a Theremin. It never ceases to amaze anyone who sees it. They invariably want to try it out. Awesome instrument for kids. Instant gratification.
- puzl, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1If you like the Hang, then you have to check out The Portico Quartet (http://www.myspace.com/porticoquartet). I saw them live at a festival this year and bought their album last week. Absolutely beautiful sounding instrument.
- 4LI3ER70, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Cue Theremin solo at 1:38....amazing band

The Octopus Project - Music Is Happiness - Omar12, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I was expecting the cuica to be on the list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuica - jezsik, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Seriously, that's a very unusual instrument. I've only seen/heard one live only one time.
- jezsik, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the laughs, gang. I needed that!
- Emmo213, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately there are lots of fake ones on eBay and the real ones are way expensive. You can send a mail to PANArt saying you want to buy one and HOPE they get back to you, but even then you have to visit their shop (in Switzerland) before you can buy one. Here's a link with a bit more explanation.
http://www.hangblog.org/2006/11/27/how-to-buy-a-ha ... - dmunkey, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Didgeridoo is a fun instrument to play, hard to learn though. The circular breathing concept just took me months.
- jermscentral, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1My percussion instructor in college showed me a waterphone and told me it was the sound you hear in horror movies... he was right.
And it looks like an unfinished World Series trophy. - cutebutnerdy, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1It's great to see these instruments being used.
- Jookly, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1i found a good list just like this but with many many more instruments http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/
- mattbatt77, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1seriously, they all could use more cowbell
- Tetraca, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1No theremin or terpistone?
- coolbru, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I've got a Strohviol. Doesn't even have a wikipedia page, but there are vids on YT. It's like a cross between a violin and a trumpet.
- hs112186, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1the tumbi is alot sweeter than all those instruments
http://youtube.com/watch?v=bYkkyap6RgI&feature=rel ... - ytsrc, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0i asked jay whitlow (he's an archeologist) about some of the things he's dug up and he says his all-time favorite is this didgeridoo thing. by the way, sammie plays a real mean whoopie cushion.
eric y - Thud, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0Am I the only one here that owns a berimbau?
- benenglish, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0No rothophone. Phooey. I really wanted to learn to play one of those 30 years ago when I was in high school.
I was *such* a dork. :-) - kagomeshuko, on 01/21/2008, -0/+0This is really awesome! The bonang is my favorite and the hang is my second favorite!
- fuzzynyanko, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1Someone on that site mentioned the blaster beam and I was like "that can't be an instrument" but with the power of the Internet: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids. ...
I had the speakers turned up and just jumped -
