- ironnick, on 10/22/2009, -3/+27Yet Miley Cyrus and Nickelback have no problem. sick
- stevieraveon, on 10/22/2009, -1/+22Add Kings of Leon to the list. Their first 2 (and best) albums were ignored in the US.
- stevieraveon, on 10/22/2009, -1/+17As an American I'm appalled anyone would think we could produce an act as horrible as Nickelback. They are Canadian.
I have no excuse for Creed, however. - skokage, on 10/22/2009, -1/+15I'm very surprised they didn't post Faith No More on this list. FNM were far more popular in Europe than the US, so much to the point that when they did a reunion tour this summer there was not one single American gig for the entire thing.
Well, that and my personal opinion that FNM blow all these others (except hendrix of course) out of the water. - TomPetty, on 10/22/2009, -1/+14I got big in the UK before the US.
- ayeroxor, on 10/22/2009, -2/+13What you're owed if you pay a nickel to listen to them.
- TomPetty, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11Yea, our first tour in the states was rough! We couldn't give tickets away.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11The Pixies are fairly well known, though. And The White Stripes has been one of the most popular acts of the last ten years. So maybe just 2 indie acts the author likes.
- chockster, on 10/22/2009, -2/+12What about The Killers? I remember seeing them supporting British Sea Power (yes, they're a real band) back in... 2003? They took a while to take off.
- JoeHague, on 10/22/2009, -3/+12Kings of Leon were big in the UK before the States as well/
- Speedy7, on 10/22/2009, -2/+10What is a nickelback?
- PearlJammer985, on 10/22/2009, -1/+8Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were touring with a hit album in UK when they found out that people finally were listening back home. They belong on this list, too.
- jshhmr, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Rush is Canadian. They were made popular because of Americans, not Canadians. Their first radio play was in the US.
- stevieraveon, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Read the title of the article "5 Great American Bands..."
- jshhmr, on 10/22/2009, -1/+7Petty rocks! One of the greats!
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/22/2009, -1/+6... I want to believe...
- ayeroxor, on 10/22/2009, -6/+10So in other words, one great American solo artist and 4 indie groups the author likes?
- dezweber, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Dugg for The Pixies. I <3 Frank Black.
- FlyingCaveman, on 10/22/2009, -1/+5They feed us crap until we like it. I'll have some more crap please!
- digghasnoethics, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Not a band, but Eva Cassidy is probably one of the best known US acts to be discovered in the UK.
- RickyTheRiot, on 10/22/2009, -2/+6I think this just demonstrates that us Brits are the clever ones.
We'll take your Hendrix and Pixies while giving you back The Spice Girls, Susan Boyle and Kanye West..
:) - TBBucs, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4I've never read a story that fast. Clicked the link, White Stripes, The Breeders, Pavement, The Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, boom, done. 2 seconds flat.
- ldbjr, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3This list could be much longer. I'm old enough to remember REM being all over NME in England at the same time I saw them in a club here in Va with maybe 100 people at the show.
- bobakanush, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Kings of Leon?
- jshhmr, on 10/22/2009, -2/+5Dugg for Hendrix and Hendrix ONLY
- ngmcs8203, on 10/22/2009, -4/+7The Breeders? Meh.
- Chewie67, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Exactly. I thought the list said "5 Great American Bands". I only see 1.
- jonmlm, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2uh. why is this an article on the internet?
- flamincheney, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2Since The Breeders were formed by members of the Pixies, and signed by the same label shouldn't they be grouped together. It seems weird that a band that rose from the ashes of another on the same label counts as a "discovery", especially on a list with only 5 entries.
- CaviMike, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2*edit #3* I'm a drunk, don't listen to me.
- inactive, on 10/22/2009, -2/+4Are you sure about that
As far as i'm concerned most Europeans listen to techno/rave club garbage that all sounds the same. - beaneater, on 10/22/2009, -1/+3Ah man this reminds me how much I like the Breeders.
- Ebue1, on 10/22/2009, -2/+4The Strokes
- DAC1138, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2And after they become a smash hit overseas, we're all like, "oh, I've loved this band since they were playing at nightclubs back in the day!"
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Kings of Leon =/= a good band
- kmoed, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2Double Dugg for Hendrix, and Hendrix ONLY
- lump1, on 10/22/2009, -2/+4So what *good* American band *didn't* get discovered in Europe? It's actually pretty hard to think of really good American bands. America produces excellent solo musicians (Hendrix, Dylan, etc.), but if you think about the truly iconic bands, they're all British. In fact, I would wager that I can name ten British bands that, had they been American, would have clearly been the greatest American band of all time.
Now, that would be a list for cracked.com to sell more ads:
Ten British bands that, had they been American, would have clearly been the greatest American band of all time.
I'll get us started: Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Floyd, Radiohead, U2 (let's count them as British), Queen, Who, Oasis, and... pick one of: Maiden, Clash, Sex Pistols, Sabbath, Depeche Mode, Smiths, etc. for the tenth place.
What US band is better and more important to the history of music than than one of these? Who do we even have to pick from?
Contenders are: Talking Heads, REM (but no), Metallica, Doors (also no), Pixies, Beach Boys, Beastie Boys, ??? - darkNiGHTS, on 10/22/2009, -1/+3Add We Are Scientists to the list...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_Scientists_dis ... - DownIsTheNewUp, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Don't forget Hinder, which is an American Nickelback.
- ParticleMan420, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1best known by who?
who is she? - ParticleMan420, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1you'd think it would be relevant that a 1 hit wonder, boosted by the pixies fans, isnt exactly a "great american band"
- ducttape36, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1but the pixies are good music.
- thrueimg, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1i like greenday
http://richypu1.blogspot.com/ - chockster, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1But how do you define 'influence'? Influence on what? Other musicians or popular culture?
I'd imagine that a lot more people know of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Radiohead than of Velvet Underground, Ramones and E Street Band. You can argue till you're blue in the face about which bands had an effect on music as a whole, but the former definitely had a far larger effect on popular culture. - Grova, on 10/22/2009, -1/+2I would also add most African American blues man who were studied/emulated and revered in the UK/Europe and got no respect in the U.S. That is in the main stream.... With out them many of the great english bands to come Zeppelin etc..wouldn't have happened.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmZyNKBJ4pI Whole lotta love? Just saying........ - kimme, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Aerosmith? Guns N' Roses ;-D ?
- ParticleMan420, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1so kurt did what the pixies were doing, except right?
- ParticleMan420, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1being the influence to good music doesnt automatically make you good music.
- VanSoaked, on 10/22/2009, -1/+2Touche.
- w00tnot, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1This.
Saw them live this summer. God they *****' owned. Hooray for Europe I guess. -
