- soktay, on 01/30/2009, -7/+15226. Smells Like Teen Spirit????
There's a solo on SLTS?? He just plays the main melody note for note! Sheesh!
(Go ahead and hate me, I stand by my words.) - mindpuzzle, on 01/29/2009, -5/+134I did not see my name on the list.
- S1KING, on 01/30/2009, -4/+77Top 10:
10) "Crossroads" (Eric Clapton) - Cream Wheels of Fire, 1968
9) "Crazy Train" (Randy Rhoads) - Ozzy Osbourne Blizzard of Ozz, 1981
8) "Hotel California" (Ben Felder, Joe Walsh) - The Eagles Hotel California, 1976
7) "One" (Kirk Hammett) - Metallica ...And Justice for All, 1988
6) "November Rain" (Slash) - Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion I, 1991
5) "All Along the Watchtower" (Jimi Hendrix) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Electric Ladyland, 1968
4) "Comfortably Numb" (David Gilmour) - Pink Floyd The Wall, 1979
3) "Free Bird" (Allen Collins, Gary Rossington) - Lynyrd Skynyrd pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd, 1973
2) "Eruption" (Eddie Van Halen) - Van Halen Van Halen, 1978
1) "Stairway to Heaven" (Jimmy Page) - Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin IV, 1971 - rewnick, on 01/30/2009, -3/+72This should be the top 50 popular solos of all time. :/ Not a bad list though, I suppose.
- hollywoodphony, on 01/30/2009, -4/+69Why didn't this make it?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MI-_jWAmlE - ChrisWickenscom, on 01/30/2009, -22/+76Buried as lame...Smells like teen spirit? On THAT list.
Bull....*****..... - deathfix, on 01/30/2009, -0/+45Your name may be for another list (Guitar Hero).
- bossm4n, on 01/30/2009, -5/+45For once, a guitar list that doesn't totally suck. If I had to add anything, it would probably be Rush/Alex Lifeson-La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, etc. Could also make the argument for more Allman Brothers--Statesboro Blues or Blue Sky. Lastly, there are about a dozen ZZ Top songs with better guitar solos than Sharp Dressed Man. Major props for including Eric Johnson though.
- WafflePirate, on 01/30/2009, -3/+42Would it have killed them to put the entire list on one page? I hate it when that happens. But needless to say, it was still a good list. I don't get what's so good about the Smells Like Teen Spirit solo, I learnt to play that in my first year of learning guitar, it's really easy to play.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -1/+32gay bar
- ryan83189, on 01/30/2009, -1/+30I'm just gonna drop some indie bands names here so when they hit it "big" I will be both cool for knowing them now, and cool for not liking them in the future, when they get "commercialized" and "lose the originality" you know?
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -9/+37Where's the jonas bros?
- Jowe, on 01/30/2009, -1/+26Maggot Brain?
- coldkill3r, on 01/30/2009, -0/+24It will be always number one in my heart.
All hail Shred Durst! - OutpostNetwork, on 01/30/2009, -4/+28#1 was not suprising, probably would have been quite an uproar if it wasn't. It would have been great if at least a few of their choices had been accompanied by a video or audio of the song. Happy to see "One" make the top 10 and I concur with Randy Rhodes being on the list. It would of been great to see him in his prime. He was just getting started... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRbPWcLode0
- IndigoMoss, on 01/30/2009, -4/+26I believe it should be there. While not even marginally hard or technical, it just sounded so damn good and went so perfectly with rest of the song (sometimes extremely hard to do with a solo).
For me it's one of my favorites, right up there with any ...And Justice For All solo (my favorite compilations of solos ever.)
I wish there was a bass solo subsection, I'd love to see some Matt Freeman (Rancid) love. - lowtolerance, on 01/30/2009, -2/+24Guitar World creams their collective pants over Cobain. Around the time of the 10th anniversary of his death, they named him the #1 guitar player of all time! I love Nirvana, and Kurt was my idol when I was a kid(until he blew his brains out, at least), but by no means was he was a great guitar player.
- 2Six119, on 09/10/2009, -0/+21Holy *****.
wow - superterrorizer, on 01/30/2009, -0/+21Rush always gets passed up. Lifeson is a master.
- bossm4n, on 01/30/2009, -0/+20Look again.
36) "Black Star" (Yngwie Malmsteen) - Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force, 1984 - Samurai77, on 01/30/2009, -2/+21Angus Young!
- TenaciousDnj, on 01/30/2009, -6/+25A very flawed list
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -1/+19lol hint: my username
- joshmoney, on 01/30/2009, -0/+17right here?
- Digglet69, on 01/30/2009, -0/+17What no Marty Mcfly ><
- tinybubs, on 01/30/2009, -5/+21A lot of excellent music in the list, lists like this should have bullet points instead of trying to rank them.
I thought the Beatles "The End" solo with McCartney, Harrison, and Lennon alternating takes deserved a place somewhere on the list, but I don't know what I'd take off to make room. - adrumm, on 01/30/2009, -0/+16I was positive this was going to be a rick roll...
- coldkill3r, on 01/30/2009, -1/+17Dugg for Cemetary Gates and Fade to Black.
It's also a testament to just how great a guitarist hendrix was to see that he has four songs on this list. And he deserves them all. - momomathew, on 01/30/2009, -1/+16If they made list of drum solos, Neil Pert would have to be near the top.
- squelched, on 01/30/2009, -2/+17im gonna have to agree as much as I love kurt... that song has nothing top 50 worthy (not to mention he even said he was trying to rip off a pixies song with SLTS)
- eatupmartha, on 01/30/2009, -3/+17Any seasoned guitar player can do that NOW. In 197x I don't think *anyone* was playing like that (whether they could or not is another story). It was ground-breaking. I was just discovering music when VH became popular and it was clear that this was some different. Something amazing.
For better or worse EVH is probably one of the most influential guitar players ever. - fossilnews, on 01/30/2009, -1/+15Great solo. RIP Dime
- ukno6177, on 01/30/2009, -0/+14Nice to see Comfortably Numb get the respect it deserves...
- stouffer67, on 01/30/2009, -0/+13The reason it fit the song was because Cobain just played the same notes he used for the vocals.
- mojoel, on 01/30/2009, -0/+13La Villa Strangiato should be on that list.
- soktay, on 01/30/2009, -0/+13+1 for La Villa Strangiato.
- anaxa, on 01/30/2009, -0/+13It's not about skills. There are probably dozens of youtube guitarists whose skill surpasses that of [insert name on top 50 list, a la Kurt Cobain].
If nobody has heard of the guitarist / hasn't heard the song, it's probably not going to make it on a top [x] list.
Kind of the same reason why the hottest girl you went to high school with isn't on Maxim's top 50... - superterrorizer, on 01/30/2009, -1/+14It has no place on any list of greatest guitar solos. It is a great song however, the solo is just not that inspiring.
And to Stouffer67, that's a very common way to play a solo, start out imitating the vocal melody and improvise over it. Lots of greats do it. - sauron256, on 01/30/2009, -0/+13Yeah, I can't believe they left _____ off this list. Best solo ever.
- yeeaauuh, on 01/29/2009, -6/+189) "Crazy Train" (Randy Rhoads) .... my all time fav.
- openparachute, on 01/30/2009, -0/+12Thanks for mentioning Prince. He's a fantastic guitaritst.
- dlsmith2, on 01/30/2009, -6/+18Pantera "Floods" FTW
- lowtolerance, on 01/30/2009, -1/+13and Cemetary Gates. Both those songs would definitely rank in my top 50.
- joshmoney, on 01/30/2009, -0/+12Almost as good as Sgt. Sanders! If you've never seen them they're probably the funniest videos on the web. I cried.
http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/02/watch-the- ... - ibeetle, on 01/30/2009, -0/+12Should be called 50 Greatest Popular Rock Guitar Solos.
There are far better and influential guitar solos from far better guitarist. Where are the blues guitarist that influnced the likes of Eric Clapton and Keith Richards? - boozedrinker, on 01/30/2009, -0/+11I surfed through there quick to search for the "Floods" solo that Dimebag did....that's easily one of the greatest of all time, and I'm glad to see he made the list. Oddly enough, he somehow manages to get missed on "Greatest Guitarists" lists, which is a load of *****.
- NeonDistraction, on 01/30/2009, -0/+11Man, I'd forgotten all about that no-talent ass clown. Thanks so much for reminding me.
