50 Cent promises to quit if Kanye outsells him

msnbc.msn.com — “Let’s raise the stakes, ” the 31-year-old rapper told hip-hop Web site SOHH.com in an interview posted Friday. “If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out anymore solo albums.”

I hope al the kids in the audience realize that its nothing more than record company conspiracies and clothing developers selling them this music.

          They do think that rhymes = poems. But much of the time their "rhymes" don't even rhyme. The words may sound kind of similar, but that doesn't mean they rhyme. They are also unaware that a word does not rhyme with itself (i.e. "dog" doesn't rhyme with "dog" - "dog" is "dog").

          Or maybe they think some words rhyme with others because they don't know how to pronounce them properly. For instance, "ask" does not rhyme with "max", but you'd never know it if you learned your English by listening to rap music. I wonder how many rappers can spell "ask".

For real rap you need to look at The Roots, Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Rakim, Nas to name but a few. The Roots made a nice video parodying the lifestyle that rap started leaning towards. The video was put out in '96 but it's still relevant today.

            Common is a true martyr! Underground hip-hop is uplifting, educational, and inspiring.

            The rest of the in-love-with-a-stripper mainstream "artists" can bite nuts for all I care. Chingy, Webbie, Boosie, TPain, etc. are worthless. And don't get me started on those ***** Soulja Boy and Hurricane Chris. If you don't know who they are, google them. Beware! Their music might make you shove a pencil in your ears.

The only reason I started liking Hip Hop was thanks to Hieroglyphics' fresh sound and lyrics. It's not hard to find such great artists. Heak, Common's inspiring music video for "The People" plays on MTV all the time now. Even Lupe Fiasco has a few touching, inspiring songs. Try listening to Fiasco's "He Say, She Say."

            Gangsta rap is pure crap and shouldn't be listened to by anyone.

            I for one hope that Kanye West sells many more CDs than 50 Cent. At least West doesn't play "tough gangster" and doesn't have such hateful, disrespectful, disgusting, degrading lyrics. And at least West can produce music and not just cuss into a mic. West is no hero, but compared to "gangster" crap like 50 Cent, Kanye looks pretty darn good.

People feel that if they buy these things then other people will somehow equate them with these rap stars. You never hear rappers (with the exception of a few unknown artists) talk about fiscal responsibility. These rappers debut music videos feature Lamborghini's and diamond Grillz that they cannot and never will be able to afford. Instead of buying a house or investing their money in the market they go and blow it on stupid *****!

      God forbid they glamorize hard work and education!

They may not be conflict diamonds, but he's just as materialistic as every other rapper. Hmm what else...songs about stealing from work, then lying about it (Spaceship), lyrics including choking women (Bittersweet), I could go on.

          My point is, he's just as flawed as every other rapper, yet throws "God" in his lyrics, claiming that "God" is the reason for his success. I dont think God would support his arrogance, materialism, and misogamy.

Meanwhile, Black Thought tells people that he will never hesitate to give them a shoulder to lean on--and he gets no credit. However the industry as a whole glamorizes everything that Martin Luther King Jr. was against. Non-violence? Love of fellow man? What would he have to say about these rappers?           And when you actually get to work with kids who are underprivileged and colored, you learn that those kids need role models like Common. LISTEN TO YOURSELF. You're complaining that Common is making money doing his job. Guess what, rappers like Common who put out positive, inspirational messages give help to the kids I work with who truly need positive role models.

If you want good music, you have to look for it. Same goes for any genre. There's plenty of good rap. Is it worth sifting through all the crap to find? Probably not, but don't generalize, and don't complain when you haven't taken the time to find it.

      Anyway, I think it is just fashionable to hate on hip=hop while knowing nothing about it. Just as (for the sake or agrument) people did with blue, earily jazz, late jazz and soul. Like it or not, is it earily how similar critiques of black forms of music and dance have been through out american history. Not making an assumption here, I'm just say think about it.

    • Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Yes, I have listened to Kanye. His lyrics range from interesting to banal, but his delivery sucks... he has a slightly flat voice and his timing seems off. On top of that, many of the beats he uses are either forgettable or don't mesh well with his rapping (take that recent Daft Punk tune he used, for instance). You said it best; entry-level hip-hop. His music sounds to me as if it's been focus-group tested to appeal to the widest audience.
