50 Cent promises to quit if Kanye outsells him
msnbc.msn.com — “Let’s raise the stakes, ” the 31-year-old rapper told hip-hop Web site SOHH.com in an interview posted Friday. “If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out anymore solo albums.”

rappers are so funny.
And by funny I mean stupid.- sepultura, on 10/10/2007, -22/+80What a pompous ass...then again so is Kanye West, so I don't know who I hate more. KW does make some pretty good music though, I'll give him that.
- Magillicutti, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21I know right. They're both pompous asses. My bet is the arrogant one sells more.
Oh, wait..- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35Hey, it looks like we can rid ourselves of one if everyone buys a Kayne West album on Sept 11th.
Shame I won't be shopping that day. - Magillicutti, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I don't know why you got dugg down. I'm down for not shopping that day to potentially send a message. If I'm working though, I'm working. I don't think me getting fired is going to send a message any better than a letter will.
- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not working either - though, since I'm a freelancer, the only reason for that is so that I can go up to City Hall and protest.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dont think you understood what Fordi was saying.
- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35Hey, it looks like we can rid ourselves of one if everyone buys a Kayne West album on Sept 11th.
- djphatjive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+48That makes me want to buy a Kanye West CD. And I don't even like him.
- rpgmaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I gonna buy one and I don't even listen to rap.
- Audacitor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'll buy one too.
Then I'll sell it again on ebay...- dstart, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I can foresee a lot of Kenye albums on eBay.
- keyboardduder, on 10/10/2007, -10/+36Wait, quit "WRITING MUSIC?" rappers don't do that. Many of them aren't even poetic. Rhyming is not poetry. Poetry is art with meaning, not ***** bitches and bustin' caps and *****. I hope all of the new-pop-culture icons are stuck inside the MTV building and the building collapses. I hope al the kids in the audience realize that its nothing more than record company conspiracies and clothing developers selling them this music.
- bstew22, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2w.e
- screensnot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I think it's hilarious that they get called artists.
They do think that rhymes = poems. But much of the time their "rhymes" don't even rhyme. The words may sound kind of similar, but that doesn't mean they rhyme. They are also unaware that a word does not rhyme with itself (i.e. "dog" doesn't rhyme with "dog" - "dog" is "dog").
Or maybe they think some words rhyme with others because they don't know how to pronounce them properly. For instance, "ask" does not rhyme with "max", but you'd never know it if you learned your English by listening to rap music. I wonder how many rappers can spell "ask".- dRuNk3nIrIsHmEn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6While it's true that some people think rhymes = poems, are you one of the people that think poems = rhymes?
Poems most certainly do not have to rhyme. - screensnot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3@Irishmen (the rest of your screen name is redundant)
Nope. I know that poems need not rhyme, though many do.
I don't like poems, but like odes. Strange, eh? - MrPeach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I do believe the right description for this type of entertainment is "performing". You know, like performing dogs, or trained seals. About on that level.
It's a wonder these people have time to make records between the drugs, the women, the arrests, the gunfights and whatnot. They must have a pretty hectic schedule.
- dRuNk3nIrIsHmEn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6While it's true that some people think rhymes = poems, are you one of the people that think poems = rhymes?
- chocolatetacos, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6He got +12 (as of this writing) for that comment? I have lost all respect for Digg users, generalizing a genre of music like that. (Oh wait, did I just generalize because of those 12 users?)
- coldfusion1970, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think you'll find that Hip Hop is the BEST selling music genre.
So there has to be a reason for that.

- Magillicutti, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21I know right. They're both pompous asses. My bet is the arrogant one sells more.

- vaxguru, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Not ALL rappers talk about that stuff. But what you see on MTV/VH1 is the hopeless side of rap - the materialistic, misogynistic crap. For real rap you need to look at The Roots, Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Rakim, Nas to name but a few. The Roots made a nice video parodying the lifestyle that rap started leaning towards. The video was put out in '96 but it's still relevant today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8l31heyYxQ- phirestyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Agreed!
Common is a true martyr! Underground hip-hop is uplifting, educational, and inspiring.
The rest of the in-love-with-a-stripper mainstream "artists" can bite nuts for all I care. Chingy, Webbie, Boosie, TPain, etc. are worthless. And don't get me started on those ***** Soulja Boy and Hurricane Chris. If you don't know who they are, google them. Beware! Their music might make you shove a pencil in your ears. - domomike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Amen to that! There are a lot of great Hip Hop artists like the ones you listed. The only reason I started liking Hip Hop was thanks to Hieroglyphics' fresh sound and lyrics. It's not hard to find such great artists. Heak, Common's inspiring music video for "The People" plays on MTV all the time now. Even Lupe Fiasco has a few touching, inspiring songs. Try listening to Fiasco's "He Say, She Say."
Gangsta rap is pure crap and shouldn't be listened to by anyone.
I for one hope that Kanye West sells many more CDs than 50 Cent. At least West doesn't play "tough gangster" and doesn't have such hateful, disrespectful, disgusting, degrading lyrics. And at least West can produce music and not just cuss into a mic. West is no hero, but compared to "gangster" crap like 50 Cent, Kanye looks pretty darn good. - coldfusion1970, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've been listening to Hip Hop since Doug É Fresh & The Show and i can tell you that its all Hip Hop. Just because you dont like some of it, doesnt make it any less relevant.

- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -42/+31But Kanye West cares about black people?
It is because of his music that black people (and everybody else for that matter) are so self-absorbed and materialistic. Rap music glamorizes cars, jewelry and expensive alcohol. People feel that if they buy these things then other people will somehow equate them with these rap stars. You never hear rappers (with the exception of a few unknown artists) talk about fiscal responsibility. These rappers debut music videos feature Lamborghini's and diamond Grillz that they cannot and never will be able to afford. Instead of buying a house or investing their money in the market they go and blow it on stupid *****!
God forbid they glamorize hard work and education!- SenorCardgage74, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37Yoooooure not really familar with Kanye's work...are you?
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26Congrats Hoovcluck, you've just made quite the generalization. Next time actually pay attention to what you are criticizing.
- skinjester, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17@hoovcluck:
just out of curiosity, if as you say his music causes "black people (and everybody else for that matter)" to do [whatever], why not just state "everybody" instead?
Possibly because you make a distinction between black people and everybody else?- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Because the black people are the ones that are suffering the most from this filth that Viacom and ClearChannel are peddling on a daily basis. Young black males are increasingly being raised in families with no father. They relate with rappers more than young white males do. The majority of rap artists are not the best role models, why not Cosby? Powell? Obama?
- bleep1912, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And you're black, raised with no father around, so you know all about that don't you?
- Nickbc87, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7Well...I like Lupe Fiasco, so....., take me out of your "black people are so self-absorbed and materialistic" BS.
- Ukonu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30So you're saying Kanye West is part of the problem? His first single was about surviving a car crash and overcoming obstacles. His second single, All Falls Down, was about the problems with materialism. His biggest single was about his love for Jesus. He's even had a single about blood diamonds from Sierra Leone. Sometimes you hip-hop haters make your generalizations/stereotypes way to easy to attack. You very rarely know anything about what you're criticizing except for some clip you heard on the radio or video on MTV (which mostly plays the worst music of ALL genres). And then people like me wonder how far your stereotyping extends into other facets of life...
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You are correct. I did make a mistake by inffering that Kanye does represent the whole industry.
- Nickbc87, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Well, I'd have to diasgree, as I DO know alot about hip-hop. I can honestly say that Kanye is just as hypocritical as every other rapper, sure he's got a song about Jesus, but guess what, on that same album he degrades women just as much as any other rapper. He made Conflict Diamonds, his song about Sierra Leone, but have you seen his "Jesus" chain, it could blind you on a sunny day. They may not be conflict diamonds, but he's just as materialistic as every other rapper. Hmm what else...songs about stealing from work, then lying about it (Spaceship), lyrics including choking women (Bittersweet), I could go on.
My point is, he's just as flawed as every other rapper, yet throws "God" in his lyrics, claiming that "God" is the reason for his success. I dont think God would support his arrogance, materialism, and misogamy. - tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Ok, so he comes out against materialism, but his ***** nickname is the Louis Vutton Don for a ***** reason. He's just as hedonistic as the rest. ***** Kanye. As for selling his "conscientious" rap, it's a prepackaged gimmick like a rich white kid talking about his "inner city" experience to get into Harvard. ***** that *****.
- mocheeze, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Another thing, hoovcluck: Why did you choose to criticize Kanye rather than 50 Cent? Why did you even feel the need to comment on a subject you obviously do not know the first thing about.
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have been listening to rap for over 17 years so I do know a little bit about. What I meant was that rap music in general is garbage. Its fits the perfect mold for entertainment in our society--sex, drugs and violence. Kanye West does try to kick knowledge and he deserves credit for that. It just pains me to see Akon telling people to tuck their chains because he might rob them and it is played over and over. Meanwhile, Black Thought tells people that he will never hesitate to give them a shoulder to lean on--and he gets no credit. I do respect Kanye as an artist and his music is very innovative and original (if sampling doesn't count). However the industry as a whole glamorizes everything that Martin Luther King Jr. was against. Non-violence? Love of fellow man? What would he have to say about these rappers? Finally, I don't understand how Kanye can say Bush hates black people. Condoleezza Rice is one heart murmur away from being Vice President and before her Colin Powell. Please.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You say you listen to rap, but you hate sampling. You sir are a dumbass. The roots and black thought may be ill, but you are still a dumbass. Colin Powel got set up and condoleezza is nothing more than a god damn figure head.
- unloud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Alright, I'm going to give hoovcluck the benefit of the doubt and say that he meant to say "50 cent" rather than Kanye West.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And i'm going to assume that hes just a sucka MC.
- limpl0uie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Listen to Kayne West's lyrics...he's known as a conscience rapper for a reason.
- Nickbc87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dugg for a reference to "Can't Stop This" by the Roots.
- MikeXpop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35Buying Kanye's CD isn't going to do anything. The numbers (from the first day, per the article) will be based purely on how many albums the label decides to ship out to stores. Ever hear of an album that "shipped platinum"? Keep in mind both albums are from labels owned by Universal; this is purely a marketing ploy to raise album numbers for both artists.
- HanSolo69, on 10/10/2007, -13/+18Do you know anyone that *does* care about black people? Or anybody besides themselves for that matter?
- chocolatetacos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5And racism lives on...I give you...New Orleans.

- allisonaxe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well, me? i don't care about black people. i don't care about white, asian, hispanic, whatever. i care about the individiual person, and wish we could get past this ***** and judge each other on our individual merits as opposed to the amount of melanin we produce or where our ancestors came from.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25I would have given KW a bit of respect if he would have said "George Bush doesn't care about people".
- GAARGLOX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That's not true! He cares about Mr. Cheney and his dad! You meaan to say "George Bush doesn't care about poor people."
- bstew22, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6dude. kanye is a joke.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Kanye's a joke, 50's a joke, and quite frankly, most of the rappers who try to sell themselves as conscientious rappers are a joke. You're either making money by rapping about bitches and ho's or about "overcoming adversity". They're selling hardship as a means to make a profit, Talib, Common, the whole ***** lot of them. I'm tired of it. Believe it or not, middle class Black America does ***** exist. Rappers make their money by acting as if the majority of black people are trying raise themselves up off the streets, which is insulting and stupid. I don't need Kanye to tell me about ***** materialism when that dumbass is spending money like it's going to go bad. And Common, you can sample Dr. King all you want, doesn't make you a better rapper or a better person. Stop trying to pretend and just make truly artistic music damn it!
- mentacoff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5He makes good music which is more than you can say, and while you think you're "speaking the truth" you're also sounding very ignorant.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Kanye's new single is absolute tripe. It sounds like ghetto techno. The man doesn't even ***** rap on the track. Nas raps. It might be ***** subject matter, but he's got more talent in terms of spitting out lyrics. Also, when did this become a comparison between me and Kanye? I can play an instrument anyway, which is more than I can say for that sack of talentless *****. As for sounding ignorant, I don't know how you could make that comment without knowing a thing about me other than the comment that I made. Sounds like a rash assumption of character to me.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1On top of that, you also didn't get the point about the apparent hypocrisy that he constantly spews. On one hand he claims to be an enlightened conscientious rapper talking about the blood diamond trade and the horrors of materialism, while he wears a giant diamond cross around his neck. I said it before and I'll say it again, the man is a talentless piece of *****.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1O and ***** you, you pseudo-intellectual philistine *****. That is all.
- domomike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Know nothing at all about music production? You play a musical instrument? Big whoop, Kanye West is at least a thousand times more talented musically than you are. That's why he's popular. He isn't popular because he tried to sell "hardships." He's a music producer and has produced several hits that people actually liked and bought. Stop being so sour. There's more to life than the "oh no, there's a terrible class struggle and we all have to get pissed off at everyone for it" kind of attitude. People like me actually ENJOY music. I don't give a crap about the lyrics. That's not why I buy the CD. Kanye West doesn't even talk about being poor in his songs since he NEVER WAS POOR IN REAL LIFE. Kanye West's lyrics may be hypocritical, but they contain no more hypocrisy than your comments show. Are you claiming to be perfect? Is that why you took the time to tell everyone why Kanye West, who has produced several huge hits, has no talent and you are so much more talented than him? Have you never contradicted yourself and said one thing while doing another? Welcome to the real world, idiot. People are hypocrites. Everyone is a hypocrite. Heak, I even see hypocrisy in this very comment. Get over yourself.
And when you actually get to work with kids who are underprivileged and colored, you learn that those kids need role models like Common. LISTEN TO YOURSELF. You're complaining that Common is making money doing his job. Guess what, rappers like Common who put out positive, inspirational messages give help to the kids I work with who truly need positive role models. - tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're speaking as if most "colored" kids are underprivileged. Thanks for the stereotype and the handout, but Common isn't exactly the best role model for kids. Perhaps Barack Obama, or if you're conservative Alan Keyes, would be a better choice. I never claimed to be amazing or anything, I clearly stated that it's not about comparing me to Kanye, it's about the music. Yes, I know he's a producer. Big ***** whoop. You act like I've never listened to The Blueprint before. Still doesn't mean he's not a talentless hack. Compare him to real musicians like Stevie Wonder or Paul McCartney and he looks like *****. Also I didn't just claim it was about poverty. I argued that it was also about being "conscientious". They act like they give a ***** when all they're doing is spreading a "lie just to get by, just to get by" and it makes me sick. And I'm not saying that I'm not a hypocrite or that I don't make mistakes, I'm simply saying that I don't get paid millions for my bs. Nothing wrong though if you want to waste your money, it's your terrible taste sir, not mine.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2By the way, it's heck, not heak. I didn't write the comment to for any other reason then point out how conscientious rappers seem to perpetuate a stereotype of black victimhood which keeps us in a mental cage. And you're too damn in love with Kanye. Ever thought of buying a Beatles album?
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And what the ***** would you know about being "colored"? That's a ***** up antiquated term right there. You sound like you came straight out of the suburbs. Teaching underprivileged "colored" kids my ass. If the only role models you're picking out for your make-believe students are rappers then that's the biggest insult I've ever heard. How would you like it if your entire race was continuously portrayed as poverty stricken and powerless? You'd be pretty pissed especially since it's 1) untrue 2) an insult 3) harmful to your sense of identity. Thanks for looking out for the poor "colored" folk massa', I'm sure is glad you decided to help us out.
- limpl0uie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're dumb, huh?
"They're selling hardship as a means to make a profit"
Isn't that what art is? And by art I mean anything. Painting, music, film, writing, cooking damn near anything. It's all art and people that are good at it would like to get paid to do it. You, sir, obviously have no talent and could never understand "Art" and how to make a buck off of something you love.
- mentacoff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5He makes good music which is more than you can say, and while you think you're "speaking the truth" you're also sounding very ignorant.

Okay. That's spam in music form. This needs to be stopped now. Buy Kanye.- TaintedWisdom, on 10/10/2007, -9/+17you know what's real spam in music form? all the recycled, generic down south hip-hop/rap/crunk etc. that has been coming out for the last 2 years. I swear, they all sound the same, lil jon made it hot, and they just OD with it and now killed it.
As for 50 cent saying this, bah is no biggy, he ain't getting knocked over by Kayne. If anything he could simply buy his own CD's. This is just a publicity/marketing trick which always seem to work (well rap beef/battles make even more money but that one doesn't fall to far from it).- StormyAaron, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Its been not over the past two years, the last 17 years.
- keyboardduder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3yeah, just 2 years? Try after MTV went to the dark side and clothes started defining who people were. And the majority of black culture has down-shifted to subject themselves to this cookie-cutter stereotypes.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1***** man. We're still strong.
- GAARGLOX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Six words.
Live Earth "Message in a Bottle" - omjeremy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wow... that has to be the worst music video I've ever seen. Please. S t o p....

- seanmc303, on 10/10/2007, -1/+650 Cent is full of crap. He's not going to stop. The only way he's going to stop is if his record label cuts him.
- kanima, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Yup, no question about that. After all:
"...I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music..."
Why would anyone say something that sounds so stupid?- coldfusion1970, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Damn you're a stupid dick. He said that he wont write solo music for himself, but continue to write for his other artists.

- realgoat21, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4your ears cant repel crap of this magnitude!
- noblepaladin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yeah, it's a great trick. 50 Cent fans will go crazy buying his album, because they want him to keep making music. Kanye West fans would buy his album because they want Kanye to win this "war". And people who don't like 50 Cent would buy Kanye's album too, just to try to ***** 50 over. That is a lot of people buying albums. It would be funny if Kanye and 50 Cent are dining together right now planning how they are going to continue this fake rivalry.
- origin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is completely silly. MSNBC getting down & dirty with the rap scene politics? No. They are running an ad. Popular news in America, most of the time, can be looked at as advertising. Specials on the TV news happen all the time regarding a movie that isn't out yet and has no real appeal other than it's having not been released? Obviously an ad. So, why wouldn't hip hop do the same thing. They are tricking you all into CARING WHO'S ALBUM SELLS MORE. Did you really care before you read this story? No. See, the ad worked!
- wookiekiller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The whole genre is a marketing gimmick.
- domomike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What isn't a marketing gimmick? People like to make money. lol Welcome to the real world.

- b0rna, on 10/10/2007, -8/+5oh man. you are awesome. i never thought about that.
- digichris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Yes, he can. I think this is a marketing ploy. The article even says they just worked together not to long ago. Alot of "beef" in the hip hop industry just boosts record sales.
- TheUngod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1But, they're black. Wouldn't it be a lot of Fried Chicken in the hip hop industry?
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I don't know how the US charts work, but in the UK doing that would get you excluded from the chart altogether.
So let's hope he does it! - prosemite2isgay, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Actually he can't 50 Cent was bankrupt until the vitamin water deal if he sells less the kanye he won't waste his last dollars on something like that he could just say it is a lie.
- mikeyv33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+350 is the richest rapper out there right now. you cant say he was broke before that. far from it actually. he has his reebok deal, clothing company, produces other artists, and has a lot of people around him that know how to manage money.

- Carl Sagan - tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Did you just compare Jazz to Rap? How the ***** dare you! That's such an insult. Jazz takes so much ***** talent it's not even funny. It's like comparing a virtuoso violin player to someone playing the kazoo. You sir are an idiot.
- TrevorBelmont, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13If you didn't notice, the whole genre has gone to *****. They bling and ho'ed themselves outta work.

- Every rap hit for ten years- xOKxWhy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Could you name just one rap song with those exact lyrics? Just one
- Gerbil_Juice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Whoosh!
- cam2009, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8So rock now stops at Fall Out Boy and Nickelback? There are thousands of albums released every year, and most of the best never even come close to making it big. If you want good music, you have to look for it. Same goes for any genre. There's plenty of good rap. Is it worth sifting through all the crap to find? Probably not, but don't generalize, and don't complain when you haven't taken the time to find it.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If by look for it you mean take a musical journey back in time to when music didn't suck, then I agree with you sir.

- Synapse84, on 10/10/2007, -17/+22such a marketing scheme...
easier way to stop crappy artists is to.... *gasp*.. don't buy cRAP. - Ignitedude, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31Surely this is just enticing the majority of society to purchase Kayne's latest album? I mean what intelligent individual wants 50 Cent to continue making any more albums?
- Shaman760, on 10/10/2007, -15/+5Either of those guys writes music? I'm sorry but perhaps someone could straighten me out here- I could have sworn lifting a sample from someone Else's album constituted plagiarism to some degree. It certainly doesn't equate to "talent" but rather a "cash cow" that the RIAA keeps riding.
No wonder RIAA is so ***** right now.- rumorsofdemise, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5since all rappers do is play the sample, adding nothing to the song?
- skinjester, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Shaman, luv your username, but not your argument. You're acting as if only rappers use sampling technology, when in reality its been a staple of music production for I dunno, 20 years now?
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Rappers do tend to be a bunch of talentless hacks as far as I'm concerned. Just because samplings been around for a while doesn't mean rappers haven't exploited it to the point of becoming plagiarism.

- YuriSakazaki, on 10/10/2007, -20/+30What's with all the rap haters on Digg? Stop pushing your opinions of music down my throat, it has nothing to do with this story.
- Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25Because the majority of popular rap is a bunch of misogynistic ***** rapping about their money. While this is only a subset of rap, the rest doesn't get much exposure, so many Diggers think this is what rap is, hence why there are so many rap haters on Digg. After all, who could like 50 Cent? I mean, come on....
- Ryanz42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I agree with you Jambi, many people who hear rap on the radio and see music video's think that what they see and hear is all rap has to offer not knowing of some of the people who aren't as popular as those artists, but also have better messages in the songs that they write.
- tyaron, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Like what?! Name one rapper who doesn't have some bs prepackaged tune and I'll show you a flying pig. Common, Talib, the whole damn genre either sell money and ho's or the much loved stereotype of rising above oppression. Not every ***** person is like that and selling hardship for money is just as ignoble as selling materialism. At least 50 Cent's not lying.
- ShinRaTDR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2All music has its place, even 50 Cent. Sometimes I don't really want to think, just some rhymes to a good beat, he's not changing the world, and he's not that good, but he doesn't represent some kind of collapse of music, its just one part, I don't know about other people, but I listen to different rappers for different things.
- Ryanz42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I agree with you Jambi, many people who hear rap on the radio and see music video's think that what they see and hear is all rap has to offer not knowing of some of the people who aren't as popular as those artists, but also have better messages in the songs that they write.
- okcomputer1982, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8You have obviously never listened to Kanye then. His production is amazing, his lyrics are witty "are you hearing what gil scott heron hear when our hero's and heron's got hooked on heron?" He makes for great entry level hip-hop.
Anyway, I think it is just fashionable to hate on hip=hop while knowing nothing about it. Just as (for the sake or agrument) people did with blue, earily jazz, late jazz and soul. Like it or not, is it earily how similar critiques of black forms of music and dance have been through out american history. Not making an assumption here, I'm just say think about it.- vaxguru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You had a bunch of typos so I thought I'd post the proper version. But you're totally right. His lyrics are very very good. He has said it himself, that he considers himself a producer first and a rapper second and that his lyrical content should make up for his lesser rap ability.
"You hear that?
What Gil Scott was hearin'
When our heroes and heroines got hooked on heroin.
Crack raised the murder rate in DC and Maryland
We invested in that it's like we got Merril-Lynched"

- Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Yes, I have listened to Kanye. His lyrics range from interesting to banal, but his delivery sucks... he has a slightly flat voice and his timing seems off. On top of that, many of the beats he uses are either forgettable or don't mesh well with his rapping (take that recent Daft Punk tune he used, for instance). You said it best; entry-level hip-hop. His music sounds to me as if it's been focus-group tested to appeal to the widest audience.
- goldenratiophi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Well it does kinda have to do with the story... but I dugg you up anyway. Good rap exists. In fact, amazing and brilliant rap exists. It's just that 90% of it sucks. 90% of rock sucks too, but the good rock is more well known than the good rap, which is why so many diggers think they hate rap.
- atonement, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5We don't all hate rap, we just hate ***** rap, which would be both kanye and 50. go check out some Zion I or The Roots or something good. Not everyone here is ignorant! Even Dre had way better production values, although the lyrics were just as crappy
- Ryanz42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Although Dr. Dre beats are amazing, his lyrics are usually bad, but that is because he is a producer, and not a lyricist, he has even admitted that people like Jay-Z has ghost written for him, and some suggestions of good rap for people are The Roots like listed above, but also common (most of his songs are produced by Kanye, but he doesnt rap in them so thats good), mos def, Talib Kweli just to name a few.
- yaveznodo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Second MosDef, absolutely fantastic. Also Jurassic 5 (when they were still around) real old-skool. Beasties (can't forget them). Abdominal and DJ Format, great and fun too. Pharcyde. The list goes on, and it's not all this bitches, hos and glock's crap we get in the regular charts. Comparing chart rap to hip-hop is like comparing Britney Spears to Joni Mitchell.
- atonement, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0nice yeah i was listening to Common while reading this, his new album has some nice tracks. but in all fairness, rap is still rock's bitch. and nothing beats THE METAL.

- ohhoe, on 10/10/2007, -10/+24Bad move for 50.
Kanye's new album is going to be sweet..... and I'm a chick that listens to shoegaze and indie stuff. haha.
He sampled Daft Punk and Peter Bjorn and John, and his new album is just going to be pretty ***** sweet.- pleetonboy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Right, because everyone knows all you have to do is sample some Daft Punk and you have a masterpiece. I think I'll pass on Kanye ruining good songs with his half-assed lyrics.
- mikeyv33, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1you obviously don't know rap, just because kanye doesnt talk about all the same ***** other rappers talk about (money and bitches) doesnt mean hes worse, it makes him better
- RobotLeAwesome, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Will Smith does that too - you lose.
- mikeyv33, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1you obviously don't know rap, just because kanye doesnt talk about all the same ***** other rappers talk about (money and bitches) doesnt mean hes worse, it makes him better
- RobotLeAwesome, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3He sampled good music- in order to make his music and the sampled music *****. He truly is a genius.
Way to suck. - DarkTranquility, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Best shoegaze band ever = MY BLOODY VALENTINE
- pleetonboy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Right, because everyone knows all you have to do is sample some Daft Punk and you have a masterpiece. I think I'll pass on Kanye ruining good songs with his half-assed lyrics.
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24Fiddy Cent represents everything that sucks in music. I hope he gets his comeuppance from the very things he promotes, one day.
- TrevorBelmont, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Oh, snap!
- s1ade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22I sincerely hope he does disappear. He is responsible (like many other famous rap "idols") for glamorizing violence and gang culture as being cool.
- skinjester, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6yes, glamorized & stylized violence were unheard of in our culture until rap music showed up.
- crapmatic, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1No kidding.
- skinjester, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6yes, glamorized & stylized violence were unheard of in our culture until rap music showed up.
- snoopdogg, on 10/10/2007, -15/+2I'd go with 50 cent over kanye
- chocolatetacos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Please explain.
- Ryanz42, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12drafhk is right, his contract with Shady Aftermath does not expire until he releases one more solo CD, and a greatest hits CD, so I don't understand why he would say this since he still has this contract.
- CptCheerios, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9HAHA We buy kanye wesst, and fifty cent still will be making albums, just not in his name.
- Memnochxx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Sounds like a little bitch to me.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I hate both of them, but come on, with a challange like that who doesn't want to by Kayne's new album, not to get 50 out of the game, but just for the hell of it... lol
- tryangles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree. 50 historically yaps his stink hole only when he needs to sell records. The guy rely's on talent about 20% of the time and really 80% on ***** talking to push record sales.
- AZskylineGTR, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28So buy kanye's CD September 11th just go get rid of 50 cent, then return it September 12th...
- VEGETAble, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3that fool 50 cent had the best selling album of 2005, hang your heads in shame guys.
- ultrahombre, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Its really about who makes mo money. mo mo mo money. clickity clank clickity clank the money goes into my piggy bank. mo mo mo money mo money.
- tOpvillyn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+150 put a lame dis on his cd instead of a mixtape.... zzz. D-Block took him out on that note. If you know the lyrics but don't know what I'm talking about then head bang some more.
- zpchrish, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3umm 50 is bugging out...
http://www.digg.com/music/50_Cent_Looses_his_Change_Chucks_Phone_and_Plasma - peterzero, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16Seriously very little good values, if any, can be found in these rapper's music.
Who TF care if he quits, there will be another gansta wannabe rapper replace him in 2 weeks.- phmfthacim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2what? kanye sells pretty good values...
- ryanchristopher, on 10/10/2007, -12/+22Just pre-ordered the Kanye album on iTunes.
- topgun553, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9Ok now i didn't actually read the article because I simply don't care enough to, but unless I misread the discription, it only matters if you buy the album on September 11, so instead of helping the fall of rap, you simply are supporting Kanye West. Dumbass.
- dronkmunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9u fale
- connor0314, on 10/10/2007, -7/+0you can't spell
- chocolatetacos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You don't know how pre-orders work. "Dumbass."
- dronkmunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9u fale
- Rekzai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Me also
- plutpwnium, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You are sir, are a ***** idiot. Yes, you do fail.

- MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Woah, Kanye must've paid him a ***** load to do this.
- nullcodes, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2No more solo work ever? No more creating his own beats, coming up with his own samples? Hmm, is this a very old article or something?
Can we only post new stuff on digg please? ... not stuff from when 50 cent was in middle school.- pronouncable, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Way to not read the article.
- cspivack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Kanye West is one of the hardest rappers (If not THE hardest rapper) known the man. Definitely much harder than anything hip hop is made of these days.
- holygram, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2You're an idiot.
- MaxP3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+350 cent hasn't been good in a long time. I hope Kanye sells more so that 50 quits.
