- PeachesTheCow, on 04/09/2009, -2/+28American Idol is trash. It creates product, not music. Kids are too young to know any better so they eat it up.
- agentsrecord, on 04/08/2009, -1/+20This is why when American Idol came to Seattle everyone was trying to boycott it. They held auditions about a 3 minute walk from the EMP featuring the Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix exhibits.
It was a disgrace. - EastCoastGnar, on 04/08/2009, -0/+15Dugg for Tom Waits. I'm going to listen to him for the rest of the day.
- escottberg, on 04/08/2009, -0/+14I wish Billy Corgan had been on American Idol...then maybe the world wouldn't have to deal with his whiny ass all the time (but I do love old Smashing Pumpkins)
- nemojonze, on 04/09/2009, -0/+14Comparing American Idol to any critically acclaimed "American" music isn't even like comparing apples to oranges. It's like comparing bananas to coal mining while strangling yourself.
- mikeruiz7, on 04/09/2009, -4/+16What a completely irrelevant list. It's a TV show seeking to produce pop singers, and you give us a list of alternative, folk, and blues singers, many of whom were known more for song-writing than their vocal talents. Cool... Way to stick it to the man.
- dvsbastard, on 04/09/2009, -2/+10***** American Idol...
- disasteroid, on 04/08/2009, -2/+10I would listen to any of these guys over anyone ever on AI. ***** that stupid stupid show.
- Leminnes, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5See, the funny thing, is that most of those singers were not pretentious at all. Most of them were very humble. There are a few in there that have their pretentious streaks, but that doesn't make them any less important or iconic.
Also, American Idol can go die in a hole somewhere. I haven't heard any good music come from that hellhole of "music." - ChunkerMunker, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Cyndi Lauper can sing.
- Itaintrite, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6American Idol is not about creating great music. It's about making easy-on-the-ear (and eye) music idols. Give the teens some Britney Justin lookalike and they'll eat it up.
- pkon, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5American Idol is just a factory that produces pop-idols. I am sure a lot of bands and singers in today's world wouldn't make it passed the first audition.
- Shakermaker, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4You realize there is a big difference between pop music and real music, right?
Yeah Bob Dylan wouldn't go far in American Idol, but that would be because he's not a pop star, singing sappy ballads.
Let the tweens have their *****, and let the smart people have our Dylan. - emptyo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+431. Dave Matthews
32. John Mayer
33. Cyndi Lauper
34. Cat Stevens
That's all I can think of at the moment. Carry on. - slym2k, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3The Sammy Davis Jr video... awesome.
- Jaydo, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4This reminded me of Coheed and Cambria.
If it weren't for the progressive sound and the story behind the concept, I don't think Claudio Sanchez w/ Coheed and Cambria would've ever made it as far as they have..
Which would be a damn shame, The Amory Wars is an amazing story/Graphic Novel and the albums provide the most kickass soundtrack possible. - Maxwell1234, on 04/08/2009, -1/+4AI FTL!
- flaminglips, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3That usually leads to a lot of drinking and life reflections.
- deadasdisco, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4incorrect.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3My thoughts exactly.
- lastmaster, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Bob Dylan may not be the best singer, but is definitely (one of) the best song writer of our time.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3comment of the year award (so far)
- DavidTurnbull, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2How could anyone hate Cat Stevens voice?
- thefangedrabbit, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2I'd have to put Robert Plant on that list somewhere.
- DaigojiGai, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3Old Smashing = sorely missed.
Bill Corgan today = good lord have fraking mercy on all our damned souls. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2They are "formulaic" defined.
- smayn2816, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2I thought the exact same thing. I was hoping to see Claudio on here.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Nobody appreciates Tiny Tim. He was ahead of his time.
- chriscalifornia, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Morrissey sucks
- tnvwboy, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Just Paula for me thanks.
- Zenith251, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Soul. It's one attribute they don't judge for on American Idol. They judge based on technical ability and familiarity.
They want the same old crap with a different name, and a different face, to exploit all over again. - oldman, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2How about Leonard Cohen's 5 note range?.. But I gotta say I enjoy his music!
- Chewie67, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2With the exception of John Lennon and David Bowie, they'd be right.
I can't stand American Idol, but they'd be right on most of this list. Those folks might be distinctive, and enjoyable to listen to, but from a technical perspective, they're horrible singers. Neil Young? Bruce Springsteen? They can't sing. They groan into a microphone.
Don't confuse popularity with talent. - KMFDM781, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Speaking in terms of singing ability: The difference between people who go on AI and people like those listed, is that the people on AI try to sing like they think the judges will like or how famous pop singers sound....the stereotypical R&B, Mary J Blige crap, or the Michael McDonald pseudo soul crap. The artists on that list are making THEIR music....they don't give a ***** about what some douchebag judge might say.....it's about art and/or the message....trying to impress anyone is not important.
AI is about making someone famous and winning a contest. True groundbreaking music with heart and real depth and meaning is not about making money or being famous.... AI is and always will be style over substance. Personally, I'd rather purchase a quality product in a boring, brown box rather than a shiny, professionally printed and stunning box with nothing inside. - petebot, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1I love Tiny Tim
- kenelbow, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Adam Duritz anyone?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/09/2009, -2/+3Oh, I get it. A thin excuse to make disparaging, humorless, insulting comments about great performers... cool.
- staffa, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2American Idol sucks, but I think you underestimate the judges. Kurt Cobain and many of the others have very odd voices, but they are stlill pitch perfect and well done, the judges might cater to idiots, but they do know music.
Billy corgain can not sing live.. - SuperCujo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Like Leminnes said, the singers weren't pretentious.
Only their fans... - sibos, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2They should have used a clip of Biz Markie doing "Bennie and the Jets"

or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iFYJYwtjpc - immatellyouwhat, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1I have seen 3 or 4 of those artists covered on American Idol, yes I watch it, some of those performances are very well done and I think they are looking for an All- American who can sing very well, but I like that guys like David Cook and Chris Daughtry have done well so far.
- shoelessschippa, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Will American Idol ever stop!? Please! Make it stop!
- Chooxo, on 04/09/2009, -4/+5Thank God there isn't a show called Iconic Voice Idol. Now that'd be a show full of pretentious dicks.
- SpeedyG, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1American Idol, or as better emphasized by the UK title, Pop Idol, is about POP music. Not a single solitary name on that list falls into the category of pop musician.
- OptimusPrimate, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1This is exactly why the American Idol winners quickly fade away. Once they win, they are quickly chained to a record label and given a team of writers whose sole purpose is to sell music. The result you get is another pretty voice on the radio that sounds like the hundreds of pretty voices all over the radio singing about the same thing. The reason the people on the list succeeded is that they passionately identify with their material (whether they wrote or not). The songs that American Idol pop singers produce is something that you listen to. The songs that these artists on the list created is something that you feel.
- Coylter, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1I dont see Dave Mustaine in there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQFxZuLemG8 - washburnmav, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1not that i am supporting american idol, but all of these are voices from different times periods. none of these are relevant and therefore not a crack at american idol at all
- craigm01, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1"Billy corgain can not sing live.."
Ain't that the truth, saw the Pumpkins on the Mellon Collie tour, and it was the worst show i'd ever seen. Billy is NOT good live. - petebot, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. (breath) ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha HA HA!
