- itsabrandnewday, on 02/16/2009, -1/+61IGN, can we please have it all on one page? you know how Digg hates lists that only have two entries per page.
10. Bill Stevenson (The Descendents/ ALL/ Black Flag/ Only Crime/ The Lemonheads)
9. Travis Barker (Blink-182/ +44/ Boxcar Racer/ The Aquabats)
8. Earl Hudson (Bad Brains)
7. Tre Cool (Green Day/ Foxboro Hot Tubs)
6. Josh Freese (The Vandals + a lot of other bands and session work)
5. Tommy Ramone (The Ramones)
4. Jordan Burns (Strung Out)
3. Dave Wagenschutz (Lifetime/ Kid Dynamite/ Paint It Black/ Good Riddance/ Ink & Dagger)
2. Pete Finestone (Bad Religion)
1 . Nicky "Topper" Headon (The Clash) - CoreyTamas, on 02/17/2009, -31/+68Buried for classifying top-40 band Blink-182 as "punk".
- DryCat, on 02/17/2009, -0/+37"IGN has put together a list of ten great punk drummers"?
Meanwhile, Oprah Magazine has put together a list of the "10 deadliest combat aircraft". - ileftfark, on 02/16/2009, -0/+25Not sure about how much I agree with this list, but it's surprising to be reading about the Descendants and Bad Religion on IGN, so that's something. I would have liked to have seen Brenden Canty from Fugazi on there as well - really underrated. The guy plays a bell from a ship, and writes the soundtracks for shows on Discovery and TLC!
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -19/+41Blink 182: Not Punk. Not punk at all.
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -13/+34Buried for disregarding Travis Barker as an exceptional punk drummer simply because you don't like Blink 182.
- braja, on 02/17/2009, -1/+17Chuck Biscuits should have totally been in there. Not too many people have played in as many bands as him.
Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Descendents, Red Hot Chili Peppers , Samhain, Danzig, Social Distortion. - FearisFailure, on 02/17/2009, -1/+16Dugg for Bad Brains
- redfive19, on 02/17/2009, -1/+15No Erik Sandin from NOFX? That's a major oversight in my opinion....however, the fact that they had the drummer from Lifetime is very surprising to me. I'm glad Dave got some love....amazing band...
- Shakermaker, on 02/17/2009, -1/+15He already said he was a punk drummer....
:) - protogenxl, on 02/17/2009, -2/+15They forgot Dave Raun of Lagwagon and Gimmes fame
- spiderbaby138, on 02/17/2009, -21/+33This is hilarious. I'm a punk drummer. There's really no such thing as a good punk drummer. It's just:
tu pa tu pa tu pa tu pa tu pa tu pa tu pa tu pa - stock, on 02/17/2009, -4/+15Blink 182 maybe not be punk, but Travis Barker is a punk drummer.
- Vietrmx, on 02/17/2009, -1/+12As a regular of IGN since 2002, I'll just go ahead and say it: IGN's music section is terrible.
Also, ***** the bot. - Lar5, on 02/17/2009, -0/+9Dave Raun! Dave Raun! Dave Raun!!
- Niubai, on 02/17/2009, -1/+9I'm really getting older. Punk for me was always Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Buzzcocks, Johnny Thunders, Richard Hell, Damned, Dead Kennedys ... Blink 82 and Green Day ? Come on !
- CoreyHalliwell, on 02/17/2009, -0/+8Do you even listen to the drumming on albums? He's held his own in some big bands...
- lansuggs, on 02/17/2009, -3/+11What is punk, some secret club? And who has the rights to define it?
Perhaps you think segmenting genres is sooo punk eh... Try this: listen to some Ramones (they're "real" punk to you, right), then listen to some Blink. Yeah, they sound objectively very similar. I know that there's questions of originality, but most bands following Ramones were simply emulating their heroes. That's one of the many points of punk: accessibility.
Or is popularity your problem? Perhaps you should consider pointing that *****' finger up your ass. Bands don't decide that - you do. - Soave, on 02/17/2009, -4/+12Watch out guys. CoreyTamas is too cool for mainstream!
- Syric, on 02/17/2009, -0/+8First time I've heard an opinion like that, not gonna lie. Travis Barker pretty consistently makes it towards the top of "good drummer" lists. The kind written by drummers.
- jason210, on 02/17/2009, -1/+9listen to the descendents, he should have been number 1.
- dave122, on 02/17/2009, -1/+8that's *****, I know and play with a lot of good drummers, and every single one of them would at least call him 'good'.
- OgDza, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7Fugazi is the *****. This list wasn't really a list of the best punk rock drummers; rather, a list of the most popular punk bands.
The top 3 in my opinion,
1) Canty - Fugazi
2) Skwert - Chocking Victim/INDK
3) D.H - Dead Kennedys - cutchyacokov, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7A good punk drummer can do that really really fast, with interesting fills.
- Zbug, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7No Derrick Plourde? THIS LIST IS INCOMPLETE.
- brsteve88, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7I've heard that opinion before, and it usually comes from the "People say he's good so I say he sucks because I'm different" type of mindset.
- petebot, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7I know, I know, we can debate how "punk" blink 182 is, but Travis Barker's a ***** phenomenal drummer. Canty was definitely an oversight, though.
- DougVitale, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7Disappointing that this list included Tommy Ramone, who drummed on 2 Ramones albums, but left out Marky Ramone who drummed on all the rest and is a superior drummer all around.
- itc518, on 02/17/2009, -2/+9I agree that Erik from NOFX is a must on this list. I grew up on punk but I wouldnt really consider any punk drummer a "great drummer" though. When I think of great drummers I think of Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, Nicko McBrain etc.
- DirtPile, on 02/17/2009, -2/+9Sweet! Only five pages!
- brsteve88, on 02/17/2009, -2/+8@lansuggs
"Who has the right to define it?"
Totally agree. I'll never forget an interview with Tim Armstrong from Rancid where he basically said "If some kid feels left out, like no one's getting him, and he's pissed off at the world and picks up a guitar and starts playing, who the ***** am I to say that's not punk?" - mozidesigner, on 02/17/2009, -4/+10Travis Barker is so over rated! Sure he has the chops but I don't think he is praise worthy at all.
And I agree with others that Blink 182 is not punk, it standard cookie cutter radio friendly wannabe punk/rock.
It's also sad that in other drummer discussions for example if there is youtube video of some one like Joey Jordison or even some of the legends like Nicko Mcbrain and Mike Portnoy, some douche bag kid has to post that Travis Barker is the best drummer alive.
Like I said, Barker is alright for a drummer but definitely not worthy of extreme recognition in the drumming community. - bdiggitty, on 02/17/2009, -4/+10Bad Religion are the godfathers of punk rock.
- harrynotlarry, on 02/17/2009, -0/+6And he is plane crash proof and fire proof.
Prooving once and for all that he is infact a robot designed for drumming. - robbob, on 02/17/2009, -0/+6Chuck Biscuits is the only name that should be on this--listed 10x
...his best drummin' is with DOA - Lyght, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Seriously. He at least deserves credit for his work with The Aquabats!
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Yeah I agree, and he's fast as hell too
- spiderbaby138, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5a good drummer can make any band.
- nreynolds, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5excuse me? Operation Ivy. Rancid. The Transplants. I shouldn't have to explain anything else, so I won't.
- jason210, on 02/17/2009, -1/+6more like they are the Max weinberg of bands. am i rite?
- duncan202, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Dugg for Josh Freese with the Vandals.
- marcduke, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5There are so many things wrong with what you just said...it boggles the mind.
- bdiggitty, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Yeah Erik Sandin is a really great drummer. Especially given how NoFX's catalog of songs spans several genres demanding different styles. Songs like Eat The Meek show his versatility. I was surprised he didn't make the list.
- lansuggs, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5NO [Name of drummer of lame ass band]!??? This list is wrong!
/jk
No seriously, where's Chuck Biscuits?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Biscuits - chapstick, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4Replace Blink-182 with Pennywise's Byron McMackin.
- pilesAREbetter, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4I don't know why everybody hates Blink 182 and Green Day when the Sex Pistols weren't that much different. The Sex Pistols were a group formed by Malcolm McLaren for the purpose of making money.
- 1807, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4"Grunge is an offshoot of punk" dude...I can't believe I ***** read that comment. Based on that Logic, Punk is just an offshoot of rock and metal is an offshoot of rock so Lars Ulrich should be on that list too. See how dumb that sounds? Point is, Dave Ghrol is a decent drummer, but I don't think you can really speak about him in the same breath as you speak about punk rock drummers. If what you say has nothing that pertains to the subject at hand, please don't post it.
- StatusWoe, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4throw on a strung out or lagwagon or RKL album and see how much of that there is, you are more or less correct with Tommy Ramone and there might be some others listed above with similar styles, but certainly not all of them.
For what it's worth Josh Freese and Jordan Burns should probably be 1 and 2, maybe not in that order. Surprised to see no Derrick Plourde or Dave Raun either. - davoudk, on 02/17/2009, -1/+5Buried because George Hurley (Minutemen, fIREHOSE) was not included. That and the Blink 182 and Green Day mentions. Come on.
- frankenfag, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4Buried for no Rat Scabies. (the Keith Moon of punk)
