- MalharP16, on 04/25/2009, -0/+21Dark Side of the Moon FTW!
- aerovisor, on 04/25/2009, -0/+16Though "echoes" is my fav Pink Floyd song, Dark Side of the Moon is my favorite album. From start to finish, true art. The band put so much into each and every sound and solo.
Reminds me how most musicians today have lost their drive to perfect their music as an art. Radiohead is one exception I can think of right now, but retarded pop audiences today would never allow them to have the same billboard performance as Pink Floyd got.
The current music biz model rewards crappy artists who release one or two hits that are overplayed on the radio until the masses realize how worthless the music really was. On the other hand, I have probably listened to Dark Side over 200 times and it never ceases to amaze me. - emptyo, on 04/25/2009, -2/+14Jay-Z is tied with Elvis?? WTF?
- tobb555, on 04/25/2009, -0/+12It probably has something to do with Pink Floyd being the greatest band to ever grace this planet. And I could be wrong but I thought they took it off the charts, not because it was falling off because it was on so long.
- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -0/+11wow, i doubt any current artist can top dark side of the moon. That just goes to show you that success and longevity is something to hard work for and not just a fashion trend that easily fades. This reminds me to listen to that album again.
- NathanLoehlein, on 07/27/2009, -0/+11"Originally issued in March 1973, Dark Side spent more than 700 total weeks on the Billboard 200, logging a mind-numbing 591 consecutive weeks on the albums chart from December 1976 to April 1988. At that time, Billboard then modified its chart format to distinguish between current albums and catalog releases.
But when SoundScan began providing audited weekly sales figures for albums and charts beginning in May 1991, Dark Side of the Moon immediately re-established itself as one of the perennial and premier catalog sellers. Since February 1992, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon has spent more than 500 straight weeks on Billboard's Top 200 Catalogue Albums chart.
Last week, Dark Side of the Moon sold more than 17,000 copies to hold on to #3 on the Catalogue chart, trailing only Lee Greenwood's American Patriot (28,000 copies sold) and Enya's Paint the Sky With Stars (20,000 sold). If the Catalogue Albums Chart were folded into the Current Albums chart, Dark Side of The Moon would still be in the Top 100 albums sold — coming in at #83, just behind Dream Street's self-titled debut and just ahead of the "Training Day" soundtrack.
This year alone, Dark Side of the Moon has sold more than 365,000 copies, according to SoundScan, and the record has sold more than 1.43 million copies in the last three years. "Time" meets "Money," indeed."

- huxleyan, on 04/25/2009, -1/+11So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death. - bbliss17, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8That is a massive amount of time on the billboard 200.
- hawksfan03, on 04/25/2009, -0/+6i think a band staying together for 14 years would be a big feat. There is zero chance that record will ever be broken. It's like cy young's 511 wins. no one will ever come close
- robbiedo, on 04/25/2009, -0/+6Wow. That was an interesting, and surprisingly, informative 10 list.
I never heard any Bob Newhart stand up. Any good? - Barbarino, on 04/25/2009, -0/+5I urge anyone who is introduced to Pink Floyd via DSOTM to explore their discography. They have so many gems that the avg person has never heard. Check out Seamus on the Meddle album. It's so wacky, but catchy, some how cool. While you are there check out St Tropez. Though Wish You Were Here is their best work.
- xkenny13, on 04/25/2009, -1/+6Dugg for the only artist to ever have four number one albums in the same year: The Monkees
- aerovisor, on 04/25/2009, -0/+4uhhh...Pink Floyd broke apart 7 years or so after Dark Side....
It's not about the band staying together, but the value of the work. - macfan93, on 04/25/2009, -0/+4I wonder which Kidz Bop CD reached the highest on the chart, if it reached the chart at all.
- 33PercentGod, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3The Beastie Boys are my favorite group of all time.
Represent!
Also,I love it when rap fans tell me the Beastie Boys aren't "real rap". LULZ. Take your thug rap and GTFO. - antoniuk, on 04/25/2009, -1/+4Not surprised about incubus. Worst band in history
- desmonde, on 04/25/2009, -0/+2Jackie Gleason, from the days when radios glowed and why wouldn't you listen to the same songs for three years?
- tmyprod, on 04/25/2009, -1/+3Good thing we don't live in a perfect world.
- fakeplasticsnow, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Nas had one great album and has been living off the success of it ever since. Eminem is really the same way. Tech, Dead Prez, and T.I. are all good, but I would not compare them to Jay-Z. After thinking about it, I would say that GZA is better than all of those mentioned, as well as Lif. This is really more of an opinion. As far as mainstream artists go, I believe Jay is the best.
- pittpat, on 04/25/2009, -0/+2They tracks singles too, it's called the "Hot 100"
- Junger86, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Dark Side is one of the best album ever and a progressive masterpiece ! Not a surprise if he stayed so many time !
- reed311, on 04/25/2009, -1/+3As a bonus, they should have mentioned the fact that The Beatles held the top five song positions in 1964.
- pittpat, on 04/25/2009, -0/+2Yes, he had the #1 and #2 albums!
- Woodmaister, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Dark Side of the Moon is awesome. I honestly think that's going to hold the record for quite some time to come.
- fakeplasticsnow, on 04/25/2009, -2/+3I don't know why, but I always thought Appetite for Destruction had this honor, but I do like Floyd more. I'm not really a big fan of either of them. If we lived in a perfect world, we would be seeing MBV, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Radiohead at the top of that list.
- Duncan3, on 04/25/2009, -0/+1I wonder how long they can keep tracking albums instead of singles. Now you're lucky to even have one decent song on an album you'd ever want to hear more then a few times.
- mexicanman07, on 04/25/2009, -1/+2@aerovisor
dark side of the moon wasn't there first album - staticfire, on 04/25/2009, -0/+1Go download Tech N9Ne - Sickology 101
Its his brand new CD. It's supposed to come out later this week. But I just downloaded it today (torrenting FTW) and its awesome as *****.
Listen to it and please try and tell me that Jay-Z is better than that
In fact here's a link: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4866016/Tech_N9ne_ ... - staticfire, on 04/25/2009, -0/+1Nas, T.I. Tech N9ne, Eminem, Dead Prez, and many other rappers are all still alive and are way better than Jay-Z. And Jay-Z is certainly not the best rapper ever. Ever heard of Tupac? The Notorious BIG?
Not that I hate Jay-Z I like some of his stuff, but to call him the best is simply a lie, much like the idiots calling Lil Wayne the best alive.
It is simply disrespectful to the plethora of more skilled rappers. - WalkerTXclocker, on 04/25/2009, -0/+1Hey, hey, we're the Monkees!
- fakeplasticsnow, on 04/25/2009, -4/+4Something wrong with that? Jay-Z has established himself as the greatest rapper alive(possibly ever). He deserves to be up there with Elvis honestly. Both are/were the best of their time.
- Junger86, on 04/29/2009, -0/+0"Reminds me how most musicians today have lost their drive to perfect their music as an art"
"Radiohead is one exception"
Please... c'mon... not radiohead again...
Start listening to Dream Theater with album like awake, scene from a memory, a change of season.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmFpPvMlcdw here's Dream Theater
And listen to Porcupine Tree, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside, Ayreon (Universal Migrator part I is really floydish, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekzUZFdYTKk), Sylvan, Arena, ...
All those progressive genius from today show that they perfect their music as an art ! - inactive, on 04/25/2009, -5/+4Who the ***** is Neutral Milk Hotel?
- PerennialTears, on 04/25/2009, -3/+2(Pearl Jam/ Radiohead fans) Cool facts: The biggest chart jump: Life After Death by The Notorious B.I.G., #176 to #1. This is really no surprise - the album was released posthumously just 16 days after his death in 1997. Other huge leaps include Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy, from #173 to #1; Radiohead’s In Rainbows, from #156 to #1; and somewhat surprisingly, The Monkees’ More of the Monkees, from #122 to #1. And another quick fact about Vitalogy - it originally charted at#55, and that was actual vinyl album sales, not CDs. It was the first vinyl album to chart at all since CDs entered the market.
