- wtfhacksDan, on 05/10/2009, -4/+79Wheres Buddy Rich? Wheres Joe Morello? Wheres John Bonham?
- fezzasus, on 05/10/2009, -20/+71No, No, Yes, No, No, No, No, No, No.
The problem with telling non-drummers who the best drummers are is that they don't have a clue, and usually go on the principle that more drums make better drummers. Well I have many drums and i'm still crap, however here are a few absent from the list that should be there:
John Bonham (Led Zeppelin drummer). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svR3iXKTJvc
Jon Theodore (former Mars Volta drummer). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQwwtpUTtUY
Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHnyvmYnG5s
Buddy Rich (Buddy Rich big band). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgaD54YcXpA
I could go on. - trixyfox, on 05/10/2009, -3/+53Keith Moon?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCKlr5qeiQY
He may not have done many solos, but he never needed to. - itc518, on 05/08/2009, -1/+48All the other drummers everyone is bringing up are definitely all very good too. One drummer that everyone loves though that I think is overrated is Peter Kriss. I think Kiss is the most overrated band ever anyways and I am sure I will get dugg down for saying it since SO many people are obsessed with them.
I know a guy who insists that Peter Kriss would school Neil Peart on drums, I find it laughable but I am curious to see how many people here agree. - Relentl3ss, on 05/10/2009, -0/+45Seriously, where was Animal on that list...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDU-ZyBQRnQ&fea ... - Neiby, on 05/10/2009, -3/+39There's no such thing as "best" when it comes to musicianship. Regardless, Vinnie Colaiuta should be on the list.
- itc518, on 05/09/2009, -2/+33That is Gene Hoglan formerly of Death, Strapping Young Lad, Zimmers Hole and many other projects. he is amazing.
- ProfessorNull, on 05/10/2009, -1/+29Gavin Harrison (currently with Porcupine Tree).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKCIUpW3q9s - Bender, on 05/10/2009, -2/+28Lars is terrible, ask any drummer that has a clue. He can't play half the crap he does in studio live.
- fezzasus, on 05/10/2009, -6/+31playing fast and looking like a tit does not qualify as playing well.
- inactive, on 05/10/2009, -5/+29Wait a second... you say "No" to Danny Carey, but then list John Bonham as a candidate?
We're not talking about "our favorite bands", but the technical skill and overall talent of the drummer. I'm not saying Bohnam isn't skilled, but he doesn't remotely hold a candle to Danny Carey...
Sorry, but you just contradicted yourself about the "having a clue" part. - thorstrongstone, on 05/10/2009, -0/+24I'm with you about Buddy Rich, man, but I think this is a living-list.
I'm digging you up anyway. I mean, Buddy Rich was the *****! - billricardi, on 05/10/2009, -0/+23Save for maybe 3 or 4 standout artists in the world, you should find it laughable when anyone claims someone can 'school' Peart. You have good instincts.
- Kumaku, on 05/10/2009, -2/+24Where's Dana Carvey?
- whiteguysamurai, on 05/10/2009, -1/+22Matt Cameron?
- Marutar, on 05/10/2009, -2/+23The Mike Portnoy solo is actually one of Neil Peart's solos in YYZ (off of Exit Stage Left)
- Feldon, on 05/10/2009, -3/+22Where's Jojo Mayer?
- kelmaster1, on 05/10/2009, -1/+20No, if you were really a drummer you would not take Neil Peart off the list. His songwriting skills alone set him apart. That and nearly every professional drummer highly regards Neil...
Oh wow, even I can play Immigrant Song. Not as good Bonham obviously, but it's a relatively simple 4/4 beat with a classic rock rudiment...
I understand what your getting at, there's a big difference between people who can play fast and loud, and then there's the people with class and timing. Really though all these guys are better drummers than I'll ever be... - Whatasillyhat, on 05/10/2009, -3/+22Mike Portnoy and Thomas Haake are gods amongst men. Mikes' kits are ridiculous.
http://www.boulderdrummer.com/graphics/worldrecord ... - sooperskip, on 05/08/2009, -1/+20Dugg and Submitted for Richard Christy....
"Heeeeeeeyyy" - eleazarfunk, on 05/10/2009, -4/+22Weckl, Chambers, Colaiuta, Rich, Gadd, etc... where are they?
You can't ever do lists like this. Best? Best at what? Some of these guys have coordination/technical play out the rear with no musicality. Some of these guys can't come into a studio blind and lay down a track using just sheet music. Some can't play double bass while others can't swing.
What happens when you set a Tabla in front of some of these "drummers"? - RGSPro, on 05/10/2009, -2/+19This article presumes you have to have a lot of drums to be a fantastic drummer... On the contrary...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKigk2C58
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otqf7oIcUTQ - karmapolice911, on 05/10/2009, -3/+18Great list. I was naturally expecting to see Danny Carey and Mike Portnoy on here, but I'm glad Tomas Haake got props too. The rhythms he can play in Meshuggah are astounding.
- NismoTigerWVU, on 05/10/2009, -3/+18Can we add Thomas Pridgen to the list please?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L27_j0DH5ag
Kid is amazing.
I'm also glad they gave Niel Pert some credit there, but I prefer this clip to show him off.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF-k4wg70rg - kelmaster1, on 05/10/2009, -0/+14^Peart is the man. Professional musicians regard Peart highly for not only for his amazing drumming skills, but for his songwriting skills as well. Actually, it's near impossible to find a good musician that doesn't at least appreciate Rush.
Rush in general was not a hugely popular band, mainly because they didn't sell out like every other rock band. As gay as it sounds, they stayed away from the womens and whiskey and focused on the music. - RadiatedAnt, on 05/10/2009, -1/+14Outrage!! *insert not on the list guy here* [link]
- Tourniquet, on 05/10/2009, -1/+14Jordinson isn't on here for the same reason that Travis Barker isn't. The day that I see them start playing like Thomas Haake, Thomas Lang or Danny Carey then MAYBE they will be worthy of a list like this. They're all about speed and have absolutely no style.
- smdyson, on 05/10/2009, -4/+17I'm glad to see some love for Mike Portnoy.
- radicaldementia, on 05/08/2009, -2/+14Good list. I've seen Flo Mournier, Romain Goulon, and Tomas Haake live several times, and they are truly amazing. I would also add John Longstreth from Origin.
- BiggestofMikes, on 05/10/2009, -2/+14No Buddy Rich?!?!?!? Decent list, but NOT the best drummers in the world.
- PacmanMafia, on 05/10/2009, -1/+13If you think Barker is awesome...then you are missing out.
- kyofu, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11FTA: "10 of the Best Drummers in the World"
Submission: "10 best drummers in the world"
I'm sure that using the right phrase would be so much more accurate. - DarkJedi375, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11Dugg down for the simple fact that this list is indeed missing Buddy Rich.
- TheRascalKing, on 05/10/2009, -2/+13What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?
Homeless.
How can you tell if a drummer is at your door?
The knocking speeds up.
How do you get the drummer off your porch?
Pay for the Pizza.
What do you call a hot chick on a drummer's arm?
A tattoo.
No, seriously. What do you call a hot chick on a drummer's arm?
His mom.
Ok, I'm done. - kmoneybts, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11way underrated drummer
- flieger, on 05/10/2009, -5/+16So the author likes metal, fine. But where are the great jazz drummers? Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette? Or the legendary studio drummers like Jeff Porcaro, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd?
This list is a joke. - MorfiusX, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11I love watching Danny Carey play.
- azies, on 05/09/2009, -5/+16for me best ever is queen drummer roger taylor
- Jpesci, on 05/10/2009, -0/+10FTA: "There are so many amazing drummers currently playing and this is just a small sample of them, it is not meant to be the 10 best drummers ever."
The submission titled it wrong.. should be 10 of the Best, not 10 Best. - NealKasper, on 05/10/2009, -1/+1110-4 Lars Ulrich is terrible. And his drumming sucks bad, too.
- awwsnap, on 05/10/2009, -0/+10jazz musicians.
- dajxd, on 05/10/2009, -4/+14This is a really ignorant list. There's a lot of athleticism on it, but that's only half the qualification. Solos aren't a good way to show someone's worthwhileness as a drummer, and looking at it that way ignores a lot of very important people in other genres.
- Suzuka09, on 05/10/2009, -3/+13Maybe becuase Barker isn't that great
- untzboy, on 05/10/2009, -8/+18- Lars Ulrich
- Nick5309, on 05/10/2009, -4/+13I second John Bonham, i was floored when i didn't see him on the list. He is definitely a serious contender for THE single greatest drummer of all time.
- XNinjaZX, on 05/10/2009, -0/+9Porcupine Tree ftw!
Seriously though, for anyone who doesn't know about them, check them out. They are really good. - intthis, on 05/10/2009, -1/+10Where's Animal, from Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem?
- contradictator, on 05/10/2009, -1/+10Snakes 'n Barrels FTW.
Oh, and die for Dethklok. - PorchSong, on 05/10/2009, -0/+9John Bonham not on "Peart's madness?" You wanna talk about the original "fanboy" battle, it has to be be Bonham vs. Peart. Personally I think Bonham is the better, but appreciate Peart almost as equally. Ask most of today's best drummers and they will fall along the same lines--they all grew up emulating both Bonham and Peart. The difference between the two basically comes down to who's style you prefer. But as for raw talent, those two are some of, if not the best. If you have not really listened to Bonham, go listen to Moby Dick or Bonzo's Montreux--sick skills. The guy single handedly brought "trips" into rock and roll. And remember, he played on a small set-up.
