- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not stealing. First of all the crime you are talking about is copyright infringement. Secondly, there is no copyright laws being violated, as-per the Fair Use laws. These fair use laws are superseded by the DMCA to prevent us (the customer) from breaking the DRM on these files, but seeing as the methods being used here are simply a digital->analog->digital method, there is no breaking of the DRM, and hence, this is no different than recording a song on the radio to a cassette tape.
If you expected immature comments to follow, sorry to disappoint. But the fact is, Napster itself pays out a portion of its subscription model to the labels which in turn take care of "the little guys" you claim are hurt by this. If you disagree how that money is divvied, then take up your complaints with Napster and it's subscription model, and not the customers using it. Napster is offering a subscription free weekend, so there is nothing different between a paying customer, and someone who has come along during this weekend.
Is this a legal loophole? Possibly, but don't accuse people of crimes they did not commit. - cool8man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2After you download napster and you register a name don't be confused and think you have to enter a credit card. If you look at the bottom fo the registration form below the credit card information section you will see a very tiny small link to use a free "napster light" account. If you click on that you have full access to Napster's music library and radio stations all weekend.
- MadRat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Under my account status it says "Subscription End Date: 9/6/2005 6:59 Greenwich Mean Time" so it should end at the same time for everyone no matter what timezone you're in (about 1.5 hrs left if i can count).
How much was everyone able to get? I'll have a little less than 3 gigs :). - murdoc43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02.6 gig but now the player won't even play the downloaded drm wma.'s so i can encode them. i got most of them done but i wasn't even connected to the Internet and Napster wasn't running. it's like the file had a built-in time bomb.
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's too late for some to listen this for free, but I immensely enjoyed Misfits Meet Nutley Brass - Last Caress. I would not recommend you listen to the original by The Misfits because it is quite vulgar.
- techguy420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Download tunebite, download the lame mp3 encoder and add files, play the music. easy"
Yes but is there a way to get better audio, cause mine sucks after using tunebite!!! please Gmail me at killarobotATgmail - murdoc43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no whats-his-face is right. after you encode enough songs to burn on a cd with nero 6 it says "not enough burn licenses available" when you attempt to burn a regular old audio cd. i don't get it i thought tunebite was suppose to strip the drm out during encode. wtf?
- LadyJaye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Audacity and Lame are working well.. although it CAN'T be this easy?? I'm not sure that exporting the file from Audacity to MP3 that it's still gonna play on tuesday... it just can't be this easy...
- fef560, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love tunebite, I got perfect quality using mp3 for encoding and sum for the recording
- linuxgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the link & comments. I already have Yahoo Music Unlimited and now I have Total Recorder too so those unlimited songs really are unlimited now. :)
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fef560: yea i've been using tunebite as well, its fantastic, however it still uses your soundcard. muvaudio creates a virtual sound card so that you can run multiple instances, and its a better method of digital->digital (psudeo-analog)->digital. muvaudio will work faster, and at a higher quality level. BUT tunebite is cheaper by a dollar and easier to find a crack for.
i wish i had muvaudio instead of tunebite but i don't. alas, both programs offer what we are looking for, which is a way to get the WMA to a useable format like MP3. - MadRat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh sorry for 2x post forgot to ask: Would these 'ripped' songs be legal? I'm currently using tunebite and in their FAQ they have:
Q: Is Tunebite legal?
A: Yes. Tunebite does not bypass any copy protection. It re-records analogue audio signals.
But isn't recording copyrighted illegal?
I have 200+ and counting. I wanna be able to say I got these legally :) - nicholasmchugh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry but I think it is childish, selfish and a complete waste of time to worry so much about stealing. If you like the music, pay for it. I hate the argument that "well they have enough money already", well guess what, first off if no one buys the music you like then there will be less of it mass-produced. Secondly, the little guy is always the one who will be hurt by stealing, not the execs. Now I expect a bunch of immature comments to this so feel free.
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When they use those expiration dates if i set my computer dat to today after they expire will the files work again or do they know the date by another way?
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Download tunebite, download the lame mp3 encoder and add files, play the music. easy
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"hey guys got a quick question! if you download the song to your desktop will you be able to keep it after the 5th of sept. ?"
No, all the downloaded songs will be useless on 9/6/05. So start making copies of them. - baloogal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Where are you going that it's only $17.50?? It keeps trying to charge me $24.90. What am I doing wrong? Help, please?
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Tunebite works really good, assuming you have "Full Version"
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will confirm it, it deffinatly works. I am using Lame_enc.dll with VBR 160-224 and it seems to be doing a really good job of preserving the quality of the original wma. Sure this isn't exactly the bit-for-bit that "Output Stacker" offered, and you can't stack multiple jobs ontop of eachother, but it works. And its only $17.50 instead of the $49.95 that Replay Music charges.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Your code doesn't work. Can you use a code more than once?"
yes, make sure you have the 5.2 pro version - techguy420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok i used tunebite, and i cant get nero to burnt he cd cause it says its missing the drm rights. I also have alochol 120% full. is there a way i can use that to burn these tracks. and are they going to stop working after the time is over even though i used tunebite to convert them???? gmail me if you want at KILLAROBOTatGMAIL.com
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here it is guys. The software to do this insanely efficently and easily. MuvAudio.
www.MuvAudio.com I haven't bought the software, so if anyone in here is so "kind" as to "find" a "free" version of this, appreciated.
But I tried the trial version and it is seclusion so that no audio interference occurs, it doesn't even use your sound card, but rather a virtual one so its digital to digital (with simulated analog). It lets you do up to 5x's the songs. This really does work for acceleration. It's bascically tunebite but faster. REALLLY Nice software. Too bad the trial version inserts this OBNOXIOUS "TRIAL TRIAL TRIAL" every 5 seconds. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When they use those expiration dates if i set my computer dat to today after they expire will the files work again or do they know the date by another way?"
That method doesn't work in drm files - InvaderXer0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Total Recorder Pro 5.2 Serial

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In order to use total recorder, first download and play the song in napster. Then quickly hit the record button in total recorder. After the song is finshed go to file/save-as and click "change" to change the settings from wav to mp3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What happens after this weekend? Wil the songs stop working (unless "copied")?"
I believe so because some drm files have a expiration date. - Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What happens after this weekend? Wil the songs stop working (unless "copied")?
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, I did a bit of searching and figured it out. I'm using winamp to feed it via waveOut and the virtual driver. Now to attempt some batch processing.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can you elaborate on how you might create a script to launch it allowing batch processing?"
In total recorder's help file it gives the command line options to launch the program. The two that are of interest are the /job parameter, the /time parameter, and the /record parameter. These all have abbreviations listed in the help file.
First create a job in total recorder(toolsscheduler) with the recording options you want(output file name, accelerated recording, quality settings, etc). Then create a script to search a directory for music files and automatically launch a music player and total recorder.
The syntax to launch total recorder will be something like "totalrecorder.exe /R /Job:JobName /Time:XXX"
The /time parameter can be in seconds and will have to be determined by your script. This can be done by checking the size of the file and knowing the bit rate(hard coded into program, so hopefully it will be constant) the songs are recorded at.
All this time your script will be waiting for total recorder to close. Once it closes the script will then rename the newly recorded file to its appropriate name(remember the job you created specifies the output name for the new file and you know the name of the source file because your script launched it in a music player).
As you can see this is a little complicated and there are also little work arounds you may have to implement that I didn't list.
I wrote something similar to what I just described in c++ but this was before I discovered vbscript. I suspect it would be much less complicated in vbscript.
I hope that made a little sense. - Ravage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well its sure working!!! I think im gonna sign up for napster after this weekend! 10$ is a great price!
- Wolfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tunebite works wonders besides the fact that it's in real time, at this point Im running napster and tunebite on 2 machines to get as much as I can before its over. Here's my question if anybody knows, once the special's over are all the songs going to dissapear from our accounts? Or is it just going to ask for a credit card number each time you want to listen to it? best of three options are they going to let us keep it? I know the latter would really help on real time tunebite WRM removal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digitaltrav -- The Total Recorder Software Method Still Works
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, while I think I have the gist of the batch processing down from your explination, I am having another problem. When I attempt to open .WMA's in Total Recorder I am told that it won't handle DRM files. What's the deal with that?
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not clever. Can you elaborate on how you might create a script to launch it allowing batch processing? (I am giving version 4.5 a try here, we shall see how it goes.)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*THE MUSIC IS SAVED IN MY DOCUMENTS/MY MUSIC*
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mojodude yes they are saved there, but they're in a protected .wma format which can not be burned to a CD or moved to portable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Record Napster and they will send the black helicopters. That's why you don't see katrina victims being helped."
are you a moron? - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"boy, it sure worked great till it broke. Now i get "license server error". at least i was able to get a good 15 albums before that happened. "
Nice, lol - dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0boy, it sure worked great till it broke. Now i get "license server error". at least i was able to get a good 15 albums before that happened.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i've been trying to get ahold of this Total Recorder software"
You can download it from their site but a noise is insterted every 60 seconds until you register it.
I bought the $12 registration for the standard edition awhile back and it works great. Plus I think the code is good in every new version of the program they release.
"How can it record something faster then it's being played back?"
Programming witchcraft.
They actually use a special driver. A diagram is on their FAQ http://www.highcriteria.com/faq_tr.htm#record02 - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and the only problem with total recorder is that it doesn't have good batch processing(at least in the standard edition). But that can be worked around if you are clever and make a script to launch it.

- 0zzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^What he said.
Is their a reason I should get the DRM off of it? I need to move this music onto CD then onto my other computer, would I have a problem doing that? And is .wma work for like mp3-cd/players? - warcry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still say Audacity with Lame is the way go I have made some amazing sounding cds already.
- scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone has any luck with that total recorder software digitaltrav was talking about please let us know. I will try to mess with it also. Speeding up the recording would be great instead of having to stream and record every file.
- megatj21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0um how come its only letting me download certain songs. like ice cube's amerikkkas most wanted i could download the whole thing, but jay-z hard knock life volume 2 has some songs that i need to pay for, help me out with info at nguyen21atgmail
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not of music is not free, Like the new album for System of the down is pay only.
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blogkitten: You aren't the only one who still buys vinyl. We are out there. :)
Anyhow: Who really cares? Are you going to spend your entire weekend in the house streaming songs and recording them using a program or audio out? Come on, let's be honest - Napster knows no one is going to "steal" any music, or even listen to much, this weekend because it's a long weekend with decent weather across the country (and the areas in the south that aren't going to experience a good weekend aren't going to make Napster a priority either).
I would bee more impressed if Napster took the money it will supposedly lose on this venture and donated it to victims of Hurricane Katrina. -
