- bryan4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Hell I would be in a crappy movie if I got paid millions.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Even movie stars have mortgages.
- LordSkippy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24The phrase "an actor whose talent you'd admired or whose integrity had seemed so ironclad" does not describe a list with Ben Affleck on it.
- BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18This list is *****. No Eddie Murphy? You gotta be ***** kidding me.
- santiago1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11 I concur and also go further by saying "Pitch Black" was really good too!
- crnbrdeater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I have to disagree. While not Academy award winners he has done some really entertaining movies. ConAir, Face/Off, National Treasure, Matchstick Men, etc...
Ok fine some of the story lines aren't all that believable but what action move is? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"7. Orson Welles in Transformers: The Movie"
SHENANIGANS! I call SHENANIGANS on this article! - santiago1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10 You have to admit Cage was fairly decent in "Raising Arizona" ..... or at least funny...
- Tamriel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Ditto. But then again I also liked Super Mario Bros.
- graizur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Digg. Judi Dench's role in Chronicles of Riddick made me realize how awesome she was and I loved CoR. Riddick is a straight up hero not these ***** anti-heroes. He shows emotion every now and then that is something other then rage. Seriously todays 20-30 male doesn't have good taste or doesn't buy enough movie tickets. *shrugg* Chronicles was a good movie in my opinion and I can't say it enough.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8To be fair, he did keep "Pluto Nash" from hitting the big screen for several years, before it was released by accident.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Agreed. I liked Chronicles Of Riddick and hope they manage to get the rest of the series filmed
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Gone in 60 Seconds was great entertainment as well.
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Raising Arizona and The Rock are great flicks with Cage.
- graizur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Every Eddie Murphy movie since...
- mickeyknoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Actors aren't psychic.
They take a role with it being sold to them always as the next big thing. They can't predict how it's going to turn out after the editors, industry rule makers, directors and producers all have their say. I'm sure they try their best use of judgement, but you can't be spot on all the time. Even low budget films can become HUGE. In which case, the actor/actress takes less money to be in it in the first place. So the term check grabbing doesn't make sense. - Blisshead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The character of Riddick and his role also portray my favorite type of storyline very well - redemption.
Glad I clicked this thread, I was thinking I was the only one who liked that movie. - nagaisu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He should be in there for the first Iron Eagle.
- gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Whole cast of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I liked Paycheck. Sure it wasn't the best movie ever, but I was entertained.
- GravyTrain6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yea....the parent edited their comment. I will be dugg down, but he only changed after I pointed out his flaw.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was actually thinking of "Enemy Mine" in the list of *good* Lou Gosset Jr movies :)
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the original author is full of *****. i can think of far more deserving actors (eddie murphy, for one), and some of those movies weren't that bad (Transformers). and WTF is wrong with The Mummy series (letter to Rachel Weisz on page 2)??? I thought those were enjoyable films. Certainly not Academy Award material, but fun action movies.
i think the real problem is the author is a bitter, arrogant film snob... you know, the type that "really gets" Salò and thinks it's one of the greatest movies ever made because of that. - john570, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Am I the only person on earth who liked Waterworld? I have never understood why everyone hates this movie. Granted I can watch some fairly cheesy sci-fi but damn I thought Waterworld was a pretty cool story. OK some stuff didn't quite work like when Dennis Hopper lost his eye but overall I thought it was a good flick.
And there is no way you could call this a shameless role for Kevin Costner. Waterworld had a huge budget and I am sure the studio was predicting huge profits. It sure bombed though. - cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This list is crap.
Superman is a classic, and widely regarded as a good film. Transformers The Movie was awesome, Paycheck was even pretty decent (and directed by John Woo, no less) and Superman III was so bad, it was good. Besides ... where would Office Space be without Superman III ?
For that matter, where the hell was Armageddon on that list? - DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I seem to recall that Diesel specifically requested Dench because he was a big fan of hers.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gravytrain,
That was Eddie MURRAY that played for the O's. - revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3get your brooms!
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Problem with the list is that while several of the movies truend out pretty bad, they probably didn't look that way to the actor going in. Should be reserved for the actors who only did it for the money because they had to know it wasn't for the Art
Lou Gosset Jr should be in there somewhere for the latter Iron Eagle sequels. - overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't buy that. Don't most actors ask to read the screenplay before they get involved in it? Many of these movies are written so horribly (and no doubt got worse during filming changes) that cash money would be the only reason they'd agree to be in it. It's all about the benjamins. In fact, many actors have a method which is this.
For the most part, movies that are actually *good* don't make monster money for their theatrical releases, and even the ones that do don't compare to the big overhyped blockbusters. And many of the well cast, acted, and directed movies don't make any money at all. They largely go unnoticed by the movie viewing public (at least until it gets on DVD).
So what they will consciously do is be in one big budget, heavily marketed, overhyped movie. They'll make a king's ransom even if the movie is awful (awful movies still make wads of cash if marketed properly). Then they'll take that money and produce an artsy movie of their own, many times acting in it themselves, sometimes not. It won't matter if it doesn't profit. It'll be quality work that wasn't dumbed down for broad audiences and they'll have made their money on their last outing. - tdhurst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I concur. That movie kicked ass.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3holy ***** that guy works
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What about Samuel L Jackson in the XXX sequel? Brotha had the excellent sense to get himself blowed up almost before the credits finished rolling, and picked up his Royale with Cheese on the way out. Nice.
- matriculated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Paycheck SHOULD've been a good movie:
-Phillip K Dick
-John Woo
-Paul Giamatti
-Uma Thurman
It just didn't really gel together for some reason.
/me waits for a John Woo comeback - BTime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How could they forget about Jeremy Irons in the "Dungeons and Dragons" movie. Well, pretty much anyone from that movie really..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Four words:
Al Pacino in Gigli - edgecurve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Harrison Ford in "Firewall". I heard he got major bank for that movie.
- overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I forgot to add that Meryl Streep was in SHE-DEVIL and DEATH BECOMES HER. Nicole Kidman was in BEWITCHED. They won't lose any "I am awesome" points for that.
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2perhaps i shouldn't reveal this guilty pleasure, but Snakes was pretty entertaining. More funny than anything.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Fearless
Anybody in that godawful movie was in it for the cash. There can be no explanation.
Worst movie ever. - encognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From Dusk Till Dawn - Salma Hayek is the only reason to watch it. That is all.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He's usually the only watchable thing in said movies. He's already admitted he never turns down a role.
- Woodrow318, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't forget Raising Arizona. That's a great movie.
Edit: Santiago1 beat me to it! - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Roy Schieder (Jaws, Blue Thunder) and Rutger Hauer (Hitcher, Blade Runner, Ladyhawke) in "Dracula III: Legacy"
Although Rutger Hauer will show up in just about *anything*. I swear he was actually drunk on the filming of "Precious Find" - sifeliz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah but Billy Zane was in that too. BILLY ZANE!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I could add a couple to that. Will Smith, Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline in Wild, Wild, West. Where we also found out a peek at Selma Hayeck's tush is not worth 2 million dollars.
Bill Murray in Charlie's Angels.
John Travolta in Battlefield Earth.
In fairness it's sometimes hard to tell from the script that a movie's going to end up sucking. In fact, it's sometimes hard to tell on the set that it's going to suck, but the crew will usually have an idea. Lot of times script rewrites are going on during filming and there are many outside influences during production. A meddling producer, the marketing department, some whiny big-name talent and you can come out with a movie no one will like no matter how hard the director tries. And sometimes it's just the wrong director/crew for the film. You'd be surprised how many times decisions are made by not who would be best for the job but who's available. That's more true with talent, but it's also true about directors. I was working support for a film Meg Ryan was going to be in. Meg Ryan for weeks and weeks. A week before the shoot it's Jodie Foster. That worked out pretty well, but not every project is so lucky. - DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They forgot Raul Julia as Bison in Streetfighter. Although he said he did that for his kids.
And have we so quickly forgotten Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux? - btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True, he makes it hard to think of him as a good actor... he is working the Brendan Frasier 2/3's rule... 2/3rds of all of his movies are pure crap... and then... Hollywoodland... but it could be worse... he could be Tom Cruise...
- balerhgae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No Steve Martin either. Going from comedy gold like "The Jerk" to the obviously Eddie-Murphy-Cash-Cow-Kiddie-Movie inspired "Cheaper by the Dozen" is pathetic.
- encognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Nicholas Cage in any role except Lord of War."
HELLO!! Leaving Las Vegas!
"Nicolas Cage received an Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in this film. Shue was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the film also received nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director (Figgis)."
