- Lambeco, on 01/19/2008, -5/+32For the story it told (which actually had little to do with the monster itself), I think they did a really good job. You have to remember that it was a story about Rob et al and not a story about the monster.
- Volaitle86, on 01/19/2008, -6/+33great movie, actually exceeded my expectations

Ill give you a few hints...
Its a hugeass kitten, and the city won't let it have it's cheeseburger. You do the math. - spoogieking012, on 01/19/2008, -3/+26well at the midnight showing i went to, the sound of monsters footsteps played during credits to make us think there was one outside, then as we were leaving the theater they gave us disposable cameras, to "document" what might be outside, just like in the movie. i thought it was a clever addition to the whole experience
- shadekeiko, on 01/19/2008, -1/+23Did anyone else notice in the last flashback something weird splash into the water?
...the monster, perhaps? - omnithought, on 01/19/2008, -0/+22Just saw it. I'm surprised at all the bad reviews, but then again, lots of people aren't satisfied unless the movie is sardonic, hip and catchy. This is art, not a blockbuster douchefest.
If you're open to something different and aren't looking for the conventional action flick, then go see it. If you need fast cars, boobs, and witty one-liners every minute, then stay home and watch Die Hard or something. - Kapit, on 01/19/2008, -5/+26*****' brilliant movie.
No neat little package of information with a nice little bow on it. Leaves you with more questions than answers and gives you an ending that isn't happy! Thank you, Mr. Abrams, for breaking the mold and making this more than just a popcorn flick. - jordanlgta, on 01/19/2008, -5/+23Just got back from the film. It was the most amazing film I've seen in a long time. It cuts deep and really will haunt you.
- JoeRitze, on 01/19/2008, -3/+20I just saw this. I could understand how some people might not like the camera style. I highly suggest having a drink or 2 before the movie. Personally I LOVED it! Don't bother paying to go see most movies (and was pretty disappointed in I Am Legend) but I'm glad i went to see this one. They earned my $10 bucks... 2 thumbs up
- AZTriGuy, on 01/19/2008, -4/+20I thought it was a pretty good flick. Don't go see it if you get motion sick, though. That handheld camera movement nearly made me lose my popcorn. A lot of unanswered stuff, though, but that's probably just comes from the first-person perspective. They don't know what's going on or get any explaination for any of the freaky stuff that goes down, so we don't end up knowing either.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -1/+16At the midnight showing I went to, the projector broke, forcing us to move to a different theater. Although I had gotten there hours before, the projector broke when everyone was there, and everyone scrambled to get to the next theater to obtain a good seat. I was lucky enough to have to sit in the front, where it is not humanly possible to see the entire screen all at once, so that you have to constantly look around the screen instead of viewing the movie all at once. To top the night off, some guy puked in front of me around the middle of the movie.
I guess we all have our own experiences. - KineticShampoo, on 01/19/2008, -8/+23Actual pictures of the monster if you guys want to check it out. GIF and JPEG.

http://i15.tinypic.com/8bid3qo.jpg - bankrobbery, on 01/19/2008, -4/+18I guess maybe you should have, you know, paid attention to all the reviews, and clues that this was in fact a humans in peril movie.
*cue foghorn sound effect* - Kurlowski, on 01/19/2008, -0/+13From Wikipedia:
"After the ending credits have completely run through, garbled radio static can be heard with the phrase "It's still alive" played in reverse." - shadekeiko, on 01/19/2008, -1/+14I agree. At first I felt disappointed by the lack of resolution (aside from the beginning and ending in central park thing, which was surreal), but then I remembered the beginning of the film how they showed the fact that it was in the hands of the DOD, etc...and I realized that it was such a masterpiece. I mean, not everything in life is tied up neatly with a little bow. It was great. Terrifying and great. :)
- everfalling, on 01/19/2008, -0/+12i don't understand the complaints about the camera movement. i thought it was fine.
people seem to be hung up on a) they thought the shakeyness was over the top and b) it made them feel sick.
a) well YEAH. for one, people in general aren't exactly steady cams themselves and this is even more so if they don't use camcorders hardly at all. this seems to be the case with Hud considering he uses the camera in the party like one would use ones eyes and darts all over the place. that's the fault of the character. if they had someone in the party that we're told is very familiar with handling camcorders then i see where you could complain, but only really in the first party scene. then, obviously, ***** starts happening and all sense of 'oh i better keep the camera still to get a good shot' goes out the window as he runs for his friggin life while also looking back to film the monster.
b) chalk it up to weak stomachs i guess. i went through the entire movie with nary a problem except maybe one instance of dizziness. Considering the main point is that it's filmed with a small camcorder by a civilian that's running for his life from a building-sized monster i think we can forgive the bumpy picture.
you want steady camera shots? go watch Matthew Broderick feed fish to pregnant Godzilla. - redlemon, on 01/19/2008, -0/+12DID ANYONE SEE WHAT FLEW INTO THE WATER DURING ONE OF THE LAST SHOTS IN THE MOVIE (THE ONE OF THE BEACH, FROM BEFORE THE MONSTER)
tried to say it without spoiling anything, but i cant find anything about it online and i feel "lost" - leif77, on 01/19/2008, -0/+12for anyone who wants to hear the transmission at the end... http://cloverfieldmessage.ytmnd.com/
- quamb, on 01/19/2008, -0/+12It's a popcorn flick, about a monster that attacks a city, from the view of a handicam. Seriously, what else did you expect?
I can understand how it may not be someone's cup of tea... simply how one may not enjoy Alien. Though what baffles me is why those folk even walk into the cinema to see a monster movie in the first place?
And... "clearly I'm not simple enough to enjoy it" is a pretty arrogant statement. - stillasleep00, on 01/19/2008, -2/+13My ***** local newspaper spoiled the monster. Douchebags.
- nymphetamine, on 01/19/2008, -3/+12Go ***** yourself!

[ Source: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/showthread.php? ... ] - natedouglas, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8I'm amazed to see that people didn't get this movie. This was storytelling at its most basic -- actually being there and experiencing events, rather than flying around in the hyperreal pans and cuts and closeups and other artificial elements of 99% of all other films to come out. It had the best qualities of first-person and second-person literature without the drawbacks of either one. I thought the acting was precise, the script believeable, and the pace and story well-set.
I think that this is the best horror-type flick I've seen since *28 Days Later*, and probably even better than that... - tobias1482, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8"I grew up on Japanese monsters and you always had the payoff of giant monsters duking it out. In Cloverfield, you get shaky-cam footage of a creature kinda just middling around."
Kind of like in the original Gojiro/Godzilla...
For those who haven't seen Gojiro : Godzilla is only shown partially until probably the last 30 minutes. Everything else is all hurricane-like footage with maybe a foot or tail being on screen. That stuff and the aftermath footage of Tokyo between attacks makes that movie great. You really feel the devastation that people are going through.
Cloverfield though, was great! I loved it. - inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8No hes right, your a noncomformist *****.
- SkubaEL, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8What I want to know is how that monster could take so much firepower and live.
- Lambeco, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8Who's there?
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8I didn't get motion sickness but I doo-dooed a little bit when the first explosion went off.
- handheldchimp, on 01/19/2008, -0/+7*SPOILERS*
(Don't say I didn't warn you)
What I got from the transmission was "Help us...help us". However, my dad and friend both heard, "It's still alive". - Shirt, on 01/19/2008, -2/+8Seriously, I agree. People here are being overly critical of something that should be easier to get. This is supposed to be hand-filmed by random people who are caught up in the chaos, and it's been well-known since the first trailer that that's what it was. I was extremely impressed by the special effects amongst the hand-held recording. And I thought the acting was extremely believable with realistic characters. Plus the monster(s) were just awesome, but I just don't see why it seems like everyone was expecting this frightened camera person to pause and stare at the monster when he's running away.
- everfalling, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6the ending was perfect because you have to remember that this is supposed to be a recovered recording, and the end of that recording is itself abrupt.
to the semi-spoiler:
maybe the venom from the bite made her head explode or something. as far as i could tell, the people who took her were restraining her, i didn't seem them do anything directly to her. i think the chest bursting theory is most logical, esp since they didn't explain it further. prolly something to look forward to in the sequel. - Specialist, on 01/19/2008, -3/+8For me at the time I saw this movie once it had ended I thought wow that was dissapointing, but looking back in hiendsight it really was a great movie

http://jjabrams.net/showthread.php?t=211 - airwalke, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5You're not forced to buy concessions. Get over it.
- djgreedo, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5A few minutes before, when they first came into the 'hospital' you see a body on a stretcher...and the middle of the body is kind of...missing. Presumably her gut exploded...whether it was a little baby monster or just a violent reaction I don't know...if it was a monster breaking out I would consider that a bit cliche.
I like the way the movie doesn't answer all the questions...it works for the style of the film...we only know what the main characters know. - staticneuron, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5God! All the plot point you see as a problem were the main goal of the damn movie. If you were really paying attention they did ask what was happening to the bitten chick, the found out about the monsters whereabouts naturally, either on the news on tv's they were passing, people running in fear and the sound. The military were somewhat uncooperative except for on or two people.
This was a POV movie. It's not bad writing for the veiwers to find out about the monster, or the brother or what happened to the chick. The viewer is stuck with the camera and the characters. Not once did they pan to an external shot. The film was great. If you accept it for what it is.
You really think the brother survived? - jdaw4210, on 01/19/2008, -1/+6At the end of the credits, a voice on a crackly walkie talkie can be heard saying "Help us". Some people downloaded a sound clip of it, and when it's played backwards a voice is heard saying "It's still alive".
Check it out: http://boomp3.com/m/bd034dfca370 - inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5From what I hear it says "It's still alive", but only if played in reverse.
- DeathRay2K, on 01/19/2008, -4/+8I don't know what movie you saw, but I just saw Cloverfield and it was genious!
- therodge, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4whatever man. I could have made it through on my own. No one can deny it was an issue. They should have eased up on "4year old found his daddy's camera" effect and made it where the character with camera was at least a little more camera savvy.
- nikstar, on 01/19/2008, -2/+6there was a radio transmission after the credits? someone could have said before i saw the movie.
- handheldchimp, on 01/19/2008, -4/+8That's funny, I don't remember asking you what you thought of it.
- jimmick, on 01/19/2008, -3/+7I felt sea sick from the jolty camera
- xaerius, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4Yes, here is a recording of it played in reverse:
http://boomp3.com/m/bd034dfca370 - nreynolds, on 01/19/2008, -3/+7I don't know what you guys are talking about. Everyone that I've talked to has said it was amazing, including me.
- djgreedo, on 01/19/2008, -2/+6Not smart enough would be my guess. Or just not open minded enough to understand a great film.
Not that character development is the only important aspect of film, but your opinion that the film had no plot or character development is just plain silly.
The plot was not terribly complex, but complexity is not a measure of quality. The characters are developed as much as they need to be. Hud (the 'cameraman') is a great character. Everything he does and says throughout the film is 100% in character to what we saw at the beginning of the film. The characters were not complex - they were supposed to be quite normal people with quite normal lives and normal problems...which are then trivialised by an extraordinary event.
There is only a superficial resemblance between this film and The Blair Witch Project.
I'm not 100% convince you actually saw this film. If you did then I do fear for your ability to comprehend a quite simple story.
And if anybody asked for their money back they went in with very wrong expectations. I tried to avoid any spoilers/reviews, etc., but even I knew that this wasn't going to be about nothing but a monster trashing a city. Have you seen the 1998 Godzilla movie? Worst movie I have ever seen. Cloverfield - one of the best movies I've seen in a while. - omnithought, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4Same here. A "they just barely make it" ending would be really unsatisfying"
- DjViral, on 01/19/2008, -2/+6Most F*CKIN EPIC ***** IN A LOOONG LONNG TIME. that could be the Japaneese satellite that went down into the water at the end, or a UFO containing the creature, and the message at the end said "It's Still Alive" when reversed so everyone knows what that mean, plus Matt Reeves has already brought it up. sequel sequel sequel.
- Legato, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4the sound file played backwards says "its still alive"
- redlemon, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3YES! WHAT WAS THAT?
