- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Might have gotten more Diggs by reminding people that J.J. Abrams is a creator of Lost.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Who cares if its a dupe. Its Trek! W00t! Break out the Vulcan ears and Romulan Ale!
Anyway looks like it will be good. The TNG cast is getting a little too old to do another (though they could probably squeeze one more). It would be an interesting prequel. I wonder if theyll bring in any refrences to other series too...maybe the Enterprise being designed or something from the "Enterprise" series. Looks like it'll be fun. - DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13jessica alba as one of those green orion dancing chicks and they have my money.
- erikjernberg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13If I could pre-order my tickets to the 2008 Star Trek film right now, I would. I am that dorky.
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15It has nothing to do with TNG - its about Kirk first meeting Spock.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's an interesting concept.. it could even be a good movie, as long as they keep Rick Berman and Brandon Braga away from it. I'm serious, I don't even want those two idiots delivering the donuts.
- websitepro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Enterprise was the closest thing to the original series that has
ever been created. And, like the first time, they will eventually
look back and wish they had not cancelled it.
I caught up with the series in reruns and didn't see any of the
mistakes made in Star Trek Next Generation or Deep Space 9.
No trips back to earth to give a ride to someone's mother-in-law,
no ferengi who have a soft fuzzy side.
Enterprise was real Star Trek and I hope that this new movie
lives up to that standard. - Saved, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I am a huge Star Trek fan, however, I am not sure if this movie will succeed. I think fans want to move into the future. Star Trek Enterprise suffered because they went back in time to produce a series. Personally, I would like to see original characters, original enemies, original stories.
This only sounds like a continuation of what we have already seen. Even though they are tapping a wonderful producer, I don't it will work. Paramount needs to completely rethink this franchise. I will see Star trek XI, but I want it to be interesting enough that it will bring in new fans, not give further fire to their complaints. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Warp speed to the bargin bin.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If anyone can breath some life and dignity into this sorry film franchise, it's the creator of Alias and Lost. Hopefully Paramount will not tie his hands creatively.
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I always felt like Enterprise got a bad rap. They did an excellent job coming up with something new. The only thing that sucked was the theme song... sounded like Jon Bon Jovi on heroin.
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Mainstream audiences already don't care about Trek! Trying to please the mainstream audiences is what is ruining Trek as it is.

How I wish they would but I can't really blame them for not doing so, they would lose so much money just pleasing the hardcore fans, you gotta do both. - prence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yeah syberghost, you're right. I mean, what can be more innovative than a guy that is directing the sequel to a sequel of a Tom Cruise action movie?
THAT IS WICKED CUTTING EDGE AND UNIQUE. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I loved Nemesis
- SpectreBlofeld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There are plenty of successful sci-fi franchises that cater only to their fan base.
Stargate, Battlestar, Babylon 5, Dr. Who... not to mention classic anime like Ghost in the Shell, Gundam, etc.
it has NEVER been necessary for Star Trek to cater to the masses. - Stymyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh huh. Right. If digg is for "tech news only" as you say, then why have YOU yourself dugg articles regarding:
Wal-Mart
Meditation
Cooking
Paintball
Sushi Eating
Writing resumes
Bottled water vs tap water
Economics
Juggling (WTF?!? JUGGLING is tech news?!?)
Vitamins
"Trader Joe's"
Vegan diets
Dan Rather in North Korea (wow, there's a SERIOUS tech-related story there!)
Etc.
Look, admit it. It's not just for tech news. Deal with it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12i grew up loving star trek. I read like 200 books, had every episode of TOS, TNG and DS9 on tape.
But i'm going to say one thing.. and fans will get pissed at me for it. And that's fine.
But star trek movies sucks. In fact, they suck so badly that the latest 3 installments of Star Wars looks like cinematic history, compared ot the utter trash that is star trek movies. ALmost every damned one of them. The only one i remotely like was First Contact and i still feel that movie should have been more along the lines of the book The Return by Shatner himself. I'll give Wrath of Kahn a pass too. That's it though.
I liked voyager, but i didn't have cable for a while so i missed most of it. What i would like to see is a movie that picks up with the Dominion War. TNG, DS9 and Voyager mixups anyway you can shake it... maybe a deep underlying theme, and i dunno.. a damned good director for once. Someone that doesn't only know special effects and action scenes, but someoen that knows some creativity and innvoation as well.
Is this really too much to ask? Why oh why has paramount driven ST in the ground so deeply. Enterprise was the worst idea of all time. Jesus christ it sucked. I think i've only tolerated about 4-5 episodes of it. ***** horrible. - Saved, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sci-Fi can be done right. Look at the Sci-Fi channel's success with Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Battlestar Gallactica. There are actually really good shows. No, these aren't movies, but it proves that there should be a way to get it right on the big screen too.
- compwizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ditto man. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, has to be one of the best shows of all time! I watch TNG almost every day on Spike TV.
- havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They'd be better off making the Star Trek: New Frontier series of books by Peter David into a new series. They are quite good.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Enterprise was the most tragically wasted opportunity I've ever seen on TV. They had the most talented cast of all Treks, the best production values, and the boldest premise since the original series. And they squandered it ALL! How a Trek fan can have any faith left in the franchise after that is beyond me.
- palakt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think the guy that created both Alias and Lost might actually bring life to this extremly dull franchise
- epicbard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6IMHO They should kick out the B&B crew.
(Rick Berman and Brandon Braga)
I am glad someone else is giving this a go. - dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I guess they didn't learn their lesson from Enterprise. Or Star Wars, for that matter.
Have there been ANY good sci-fi prequels? - neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@DigDuality
Shame you missed out on Voyager, it was arguable the best Star Trek they ever did.
Enterprise started off weak, but it got a hell of a lot better as it progressed and the story lines got some meat and solidified. To the point where I enjoyed watching so much it became an anticipated feature in my week, just like many of the previous Star Trek incarnations. I was shocked when they killed it off. I had no idea that people in the US hated it so much, and didn't have the patience to stick with it and watch as it improved.
I was completely stunned at the way they ended it. Never in my whole life have I seen a TV franchise butchered like that. It left me with a very bitter taste in my mouth.
I hope they never bring out a new Star Trek series now. It's had its day, and its time to move on to other things. I don't think I'll be going to see this new film either, whatever its like. I'm not going to reward them for the way they sh@t on the Star Trek genre at the end of Enterprise. - cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Considering MI3 isnt even out, the headline is kinda lame because he's more famous for Lost and Alias.
- Shazam999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Unfortunately Enterprise's first season was so boring that they lost a ton of viewers because of it. There were lots of good episodes in later seasons.
- SpectreBlofeld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Mainstream audiences already don't care about Trek! Trying to please the mainstream audiences is what is ruining Trek as it is.
Please the Trekkies for once! - INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I really enjoyed Nemesis. I don't know why people made such a big deal about it. The idea of a prequel makes me cry though. I hate when they try to be cool and trendy. I will admit that Enterprise started to become appealing to me, especially towards the 3rd season.
- jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Batman Begins was a psuedo-prequel, but it was more a reboot than anything else. This is going to be the same thing - they are gonna reboot the franchise and we will (if it is successful) see at least one additional movie and a new series, redoing premises from the classic show. Mark my words, they are gonna do with Trek the same thing they have done with Galactica, "reimagine" the whole thing (heck, Ron Moore, former Trek writer and creator of the new Galactica, has said it's what he'd do if he was in charge of Trek).

- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The star trek universe is vast an thre's always a lot to do so long as you have a good writer. As for the other android's brain not being advanced enough well he just hasn't had the proper nanites applied to reconfigure his nural matrix. You get it. It's sci fi. They can do anything. Data could have had some blueprints and back up tapes stored under his bed.
IMHO all the movies pale in comparison to wrath of Kahn. Who ever wrote and directed that really got it. He had the ability to take what was cheesy and make it cool. All the next generation movies kinda looked like a movie of the week to me. First Contact was the best but they were lacking compare to a big budget flick. I listened to the commentary on the last star trek and the whole thing sounds like "We only had enough money to do this." Whedon pulled off Serenity on a shoestring and it rocks.
In the end, to make a great movie, I guess you need a killer script and then a awesome director/producer team who can figure out how to make it happen on limited resources. - DolFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Saved:

I agree with you on all but one, namely SG1. SG: Atlantis and BSG are awesome. I can't wait for the new seasons to begin. OTOH, SG1 has gone to great heights of suckage. I miss RDA and the new crew members just wear me out.. It is a kids show now. No advancement of the original crews mission. Although I do find the new nemesis, the Ori, to be interesting. Interesting, but not enough to bring me back to SG1 or make me buy past Season 7 DVD's. - immure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did noone else notice that the paramount spokeswoman is called 'Kirkpatrick'?
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm all for any new Trek, but wtf is up with Paramount and not realising that a) people don't care about prequels and b) they've so far proved imposible for a studio to produce to the satisfaction of consumers?
Nemesis, while a movie I didn't like at first, really encouraged me to watch Encounter At Farpoint, and even though it seems like a bit of an anticlimax for the the last TNG film could for that point alone do justice to that particular crew (All Good Things without a doubt beats the stuffing out of it).
A DS9 movie would probably be really difficult to execute, but I reckon I'd enjoy a movie with the Voyager crew.
If I was making the choice though, I'd be working REALLY hard to reconcile with the fans and cast of Enterprise and give it a proper send-off (as opposed to the lame ass These Are The Voyages). The Enterprise cast can act and given a decent script (ie: one that fits Star Trek AND character continuity rather than the gratuitous crud that made up the majority of Enterprise scripts) they're probably (arguably) the most enjoyable cast to watch. - ibgarrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What I wish is that they (Hollywood) would get a clue and realize that it's the story that makes the movie good - not the special effects. That ultimately is what screwed up the last three of the Star Wars and the story lines in the last couple of Star Treks were just lame. There's a reason why Star Trek:II rocked - the story was awesome! The sfx was just there to support the story. ST:IV was great as well because the story was really solid. Beyond the story there's little room for two hours of just watching CGI propping up a bad story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think Batman Begins qualifies as a prequel. If they ever make The Hobbit, that would also be a prequel. So, prequels don't necessarily have to suck, as long as the writing is good.
Oh, and about the whole Star Wars prequel bashing... if you enjoy fantasy and sci-fi movies and you ended up hating Star Wars Episode III, you let others dictate your tastes. That movie was ***** GOOD. Yes, it had several awkward pieces of dialogue (totaling to about 15 seconds of screen time for a 2 and a half hour movie), but the movie was one of the most badass fantasy films in decades.
The only crappy part about this whole thing is that people like you love lumping it with the other two prequels (which were admittedly poorer films) instead of seeing Episode III as a good movie on it's own that is not tarnished by it's two fellow prequel bretheren.
I don't mind Star Wars prequel bashers, but I do mind Episode III bashers. - wankey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Er, what's this kirk meeting spock crap? Which rumor site said so? Where?
- CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem as Brent has said, is that he Data is an ageless character played by a person who ages, and no amount of grey streaks will change that.
Then again maybe they could do some kind of body swap, ala Dr. Who ;) - 1ivewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BSG is like watching one long movie anyways. I can think of a number of popular TV shows today that have a similar feel. Star Trek, on the other hand, has never really felt that way with the exception of Deep Space 9 during the Dominion War. Trying to translate a very episodic show into a 2-hour feature film has just not worked well for Paramount. You always feel like everything is going to be ok at the end, or you know in advance if a main character is going to die (with an opening for resurrection of course) or a ship will be destroyed.
My main reason for watching Star Trek movies has been the high budget special effects. Stuff you always want to see on the TV show but know they can't afford. I would love to see an SG-1 based movie some day for the same reason though it's probably too late in the series for that. As for the actors in Trek movies, for whatever reason, they always seem much colder on the big screen than on the TV show. Starting with some fresh new faces might help that, but I don't like the whole 'When Kirk Met Spock' reboot idea. I'd much rather see them create a whole new crew from scratch so if the movie does well, they can start a new TV series. - Kokichi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"Will Tom Cruise star as Xenu?"
lol :P - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I can't wait. JJ is doing great work. I wonider what cast they will use...
- Stymyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Judging from the amount of negative diggs to your comment, it would seem that some disagree.
I wouldn't mind another prequel, but it needs to be something between "Enterprise" and the original series. If they do it right, I think it could be great. I'd like to see something that shows the origins of the original series' characters (Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Scotty, ALL of them). They could get away with using different actors, since the characters would be much younger "Enterprise" was a good concept for a prequel, but it was poorly executed. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You think the mainstreem audiences would relate or care about this stuff? Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Trek fan and I'd love to see those movies but those are just not ones that mainstream audiences would pay to watch. Those sound like great books though.
- willij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow. This is going to be good.
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And Alias. Though Lost is more of a selling point these days.
- funbot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Rick Berman - by far the worst thing that ever happened to Star Trek.
- Fosnez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Rather, have there be any good prequel? Image if they had released LOtRs in reverse order, would you have been as interested in the earliest (or possible the middle) one? Sure you would have seen it, but not have been anywhere nearly as interested.
