- Batmanuel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Umm, this guy is an actor on Stargate and he had one of the show's producers helping him out, so exactly how is this story all that inspiring? Since MGM already produces Stargate, he already had all kinds of inside connections to get this sold. I bet if I took the exact same movie, stuck it on You Tube and pitched it to MGM, I wouldn't even get the courtesy of a rejection letter.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Wow, check it out, more spam on the front page.
Look at almost every other commenter on this story, nearly every one of their profiles was established today. That is what I call gaming the system
by the way, the movie looks like it sucks - flink405, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14C´mon now - this is a tad misleading...gives the impression that it was done real cheap. The only thing real cheap is the website - free blogger site.
Also they had as a producer Stargate SG1 producer John Lenic. Connections, connections, connections.
Plus look at the size of the crew:
http://www.adogsbreakfastmovie.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=47&Itemid=60
40-50 video/film professionals.
That ain´t cheap.
And they are all the new diggers here today (see above) - CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The problem is, what you described is exactly what gaming the system is. Could you imagine if for every studio release the crew was told to go on here and promote it on digg. Or how about every time a company launches a product the people who worked on it digg it. Having 1 or 2 friends digg something is different then having 20 or so game it up to the front page.
- whistlerpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Everyone loves Dr. McKay.
- webphreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Sorry for hijacking the thread but I'm just going to say here that about the next 13 threads are written by probably hired marketing people that have signed up today and only dugg David Hewlett submissions. This is getting sick.
- Coestar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Does anyone else get the impression that all these comments from 13 hours ago until now are marketing in and of themselves?
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The problem is that getting 50+ people from one place to register and essentially 'bump' a story to the front page is no different to going to a popular forum, signing up and creating a topic then spamming it to death for the soul purpose of advertising new bunny shoes from Nike.
I watch Stargate SG1/Atlantis and have seen every episode released thus far, and I've read about A Dog's Breakfast on Gateworld and listened to/read the interviews. That said, I've got to say that it really does look like all of you are simply David fans who are incapable of criticising anything he does and decided to do a little advertising for him, as every single comment only focuses on the good aspects - just like an advertiser would.
Digg is great for finding good articles around the web, but the moment everyone and their dog (no pun intended) decides to come and spam it when they decide their movie/site/whatever needs more revenue we're just going to rebel against them. Check out some of the users spamming some blog under the guise of it being a mirror; I'd wager half the digg population that has seen those comments have blocked the people responsible.
In short, I think it's fantastic that you're really getting behind him and wanting to help out, but invading a community just to push your advertising is not cool at all, and you really need to step back and think about that. - xSEED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5stargate actors are abundant in this.
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4... Never really been done before? Did you just come out of a ten thousand year hibernation or something? Research a little before you make wild claims as this as certainly been done before. MGM picking it up doesn't mean it's going to be successful, the same as other companies picking up other amateur films didn't make them successful.
- panikin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here here! Sure he's already signed on with MGM, but the thing is, he wrote this himself. He directed it. It may not be brilliant, but it'll be great. I think that this is a brilliantly marketed film. Who cares if it's making it's debut on YouTube and Digg? The news is getting around isn't it? People all over are hearing about it.
- axxs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nope, there's a difference, this is a commercial venture being advertised, it's not just something interesting being posted and your mates commenting on it. It's advertising. Trying to do something positive for whom? themselves? Web2.0 has been all about making money off OUR the end users efforts, and this is just using OUR efforts to make them money. It's just spam.
- axxs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow they are coming thick and fast here. Problem is that legitimate users comments are being inundated. What do people want digg to be? giving scores to adverts?
- shepsangel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm new here. Just joined up. Am not a friend of Davids . Have never met him. Just an ordinary, 20 year old student, living in the UK, who happens to be quite excited about Davids new movie. And can't wait to see it.
- redphoniex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do you not remember when you first joined? I've joined cos of David hewlett's film and found this quite interesting and might stick around. Everybody has to start at the beginning at some point. Are you saying peoples views don't count unless they've been a member for ages? That's stupid. Give people a chance. I thought the point of this site was to disucc good and bad together but anyone who says anything good is wrong? That's very selfish of you lot.
- mattyxo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4so you and 13 other people all signed up today and happened to notice that specific movie is on digg? What a coincidence.
I have no problem with friends wanting to help promote their buddies movie, or people being paid to promote somebody's movie, but doing it on digg is not acceptable. It's cool to follow the movie's progress, but to sign up on digg and praise it for the sole reason of hyping it up hurts digg (in a small way, but it matters).
Why don't you use word of mouth advertising? It's far more successful in promoting movies - this kind of thing only discourages people from seeing the movie. - mattyxo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's nice how you registered today and have only dugg articles relating to this one. Don't play the pity card. We all know what you're doing
- panikin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I definatley can't wait to see this movie. I'm a huge Gate fan and a huge Hewlett/McGillion/Judge fan. Hope it comes out on DVD here pretty quick!
- redphoniex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what's wrong with that
- meljbuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool cool film, saw it at London Odeon last week. Small budget film (1 million dollars is tiny in LA) and all the advertising has been done by a few fans and one website. My husband and I found out about it through a convention and ended up in hysterics at the cinema, so funny! Best indie movie we've seen in a few years and the only one we've found without any help from big companies. Rock on small independent movie makers. Go for it. Jane - you are the best for arranging the screenings, nice meeting you.
- V1be, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah. I was pretty scared when I read the comments. Thank god that we outnumber them, by at least 6 people (as of now).
- rptcalyptos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2we're entering a new age of media and self promotion
- ladyniko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it was done on the cheap - most everyone *donated* their time for this.
Most the the $$ spent on this went towards other expenses.
Read the full story, why don't you? :p - shootdashit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i thought the headline was misleading. it wasn't youtube and $8, he's already established in hollywood!
- zorplex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow... you're right. This is probably the most poorly executed and unabashed attempt to game digg that I have seen to date... How pitiful do you have to be to stoop so low? If the article is worth digging people will digg it and it will hit the front page. Alternatively, gaming digg is a sure fire way to make people around here angry.
To the marketing bots : STOP GAMING DIGG! IT MAKES US ALL HATE YOU! - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, yeah, I might give you a little more credit Wiccy if you had a history on digg. This is an attempt to force viral market, game Digg, and it sucks. The guy had connects....I have connections....and you and I both know that, no there are no guarantees, but his freakin chances were up. Digging you down as an idiot and this submission down as spam.
- pixelminer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There is a reason why sweepstakes forbid participation of company employees, their family, and friends. IT'S CALLED ETHICS. All you supposed "newbies", look it up sometime.
The last time I checked there was no "Entertainment Tonight" in Digg. Nor have I ever heard anyone who use this site everyday talk about wanting it to be "Entertainment Tonight". If I want "Access Hollywood" I'll go check it out myself on my own. I'm sure most of us who depend on Digg everyday for actual interesting reading will agree that we'd all like to keep things this way. As they say in the industry, "Don't call us okay? We'll call you". NOT!
A$$holes. - zerocool79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We are actually real people you know and this site seemed like a good idea and was going to get into it.
Way to make Newbies feel welcome!
Strange people! - Stewage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2David Hewlett is alright in my book, simply for the fact that he did the movie Treed Murray.
IMDB
http://imdb.com/title/tt0293664/ - whistlerpro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It would suck if it was to be honest. David Hewlett is a very good actor though.
- McShepLover, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3David Hewlett and "A Dog's Breakfast" ROCKS!
- littlesquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seriously, that's the funniest analysis I've yet to read in this post. It's hilarious. Good work.
- rejuvinet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1By the way - I forgot to mention: When I registered, I was given an opportunity to "invite" a number of *my* friends and colleagues to join this site and read *this* particular story. Viral marketing at its best, from the very site the elitist hypocrites are defending so staunchly.
As if I am going to subject 10 of my friends and colleagues to the abuse and total lack of respect you "Diggers" have shown the others here that are *new*. What kind of light would YOU be shining on *me* if I were to invite new people to "your" community just so you can jump down their collective throats for posting an opinion on a free site?
Y'all oughta be ashamed of yourselves the way you treat newcomers to this community. - Netty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ive come to like some articles on this site. And as much as all the negative stuff been said about david n adb i shall still have a look around the place. But i doubt ill be getting into posting because of the replies and what not for others.
I do find it all quite funny in a way :) thats me but i shall be checking stuff out around this site. And supporting David and the movie. Because us squirrels love the guy and the movie. Free right to express opinions! - M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Despite already being an actor on a huge franchise with MGM?
- fangdori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Brilliant, let them stew on that for a while! Great going.
- ladyniko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As far as I know, there are no SG actors, other than dGeek, Mr. Hewlett himself, involved in this thread at all.
This was all because of the fans that this thread has spread like wildfire.
And, as others are pointing out, you seem to be missing the point Digg.Com. Self-promotion at its best. ;) - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You signed up and submitted to a democratic site....don't get pissy when you lose the election.
- Zanntis, on 06/13/2008, -0/+0I just saw it today and liked it. Made me laugh.
Yes I am a Stargate fan and signed up for the SGW beta. I found David's blog via the SGW forums other wise I might not have seen it.
He may have had help from friends he works with on the show, but I don't think it is a BS add, I think this realy is his baby, and I don't mind suporting an actor I like. - myreasontosmile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been reading Digg articles for a long time, but never felt the need to join up to comment. Now I have.
Firstly I'd like to say, please look at how Digg promotes itself:
"What's Digg?
Digg is all about user powered content. Everything is submitted and voted on by the digg community. Share, discover, bookmark, and promote stuff that's important to you!"
'A Dog's Breakfast' is important to David. It's also important to the squirrels. They've done nothing wrong. They've merely shared and promoted stuff that's important to THEM!!!
The narrowed-minded people who've made their experiences here at Digg terrible ought to be ashamed of themselves. It's because of people like *you* that this community cannot grow. - redphoniex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2loved that film. Shame America changed the title to get down, treed Murray sounded alot better. 'Nothing' is my favourite though.
- visor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm a fan of David Hewlett and digg. so i digg.
- Becky65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dGeek is David Hewlett.
- tezziebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've got to say that yes I'm a fan of David Hewlett and can't wait to see the movie, but I'm really shocked at all the negative posts. If not for the link at dgeek.com I wouldn't have found this, which seemed to be a great place to check out and comment on things that I have an interest in, but it would seem that the 'oldtimers' don't want new people to come and express an opinion different to theirs. I hope that as I check out the rest of the site this impression can change.
- HERMIT532, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with Angelicalanqie. I propably wouldnt have posted if I hadn't read all the crying. A Dog's Breakfast is said to be hilariously funny by all who have seen it. I can't believe all the negativism I'm seeing on this site.
David Hewlett was lucky enough to have enough people believe in him and to give him a chance to get his dream off the ground. Now his fans are trying to make sure it is a success.
Grow up and quit crying because others have found your site (I'd never heard of it) and are joining it. - fangdori, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I resent that comment! Who are you to critisise anyone? What gives you the right to belittle people based on ignorance? You don't know me, or any of the other 'newbies', and you have no right to judge us just because we made a few comments. I can see why some people could see this as an invasion of their site, but that's no reason to get nasty. Shame on you!
- Squonk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have never met David Hewlett or worked with any of the people on this movie - mores the pity!
Yes i'm a fan, but i wouldn't say i incapable of criticising the guy.
This film has been long anticipated by all who have been following it's progress from the very beginning - so yeah, we're a little jazzed about it! And with good reason.
The march of the Squirrels continues!! - attractivetb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Has anyone bothered to watch the preview? It looks ***** terrible. Indy or not - I don't support unfunny garbage.
Here's the preview if you missed it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmN6u8iYFlI&eurl= - Jansky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've never heard of Digg ever before in my whole entire life its hardly as though its a really elite place where all the cool long established people Digg articles... and the very fact its a public website means that anyone can join and digg whatever they please whether you like it or not...
So we are getting paid for this when did that happen, I take payment in nuts, nuts of the squirrelly kind on my go nuts account card thankyou very much.
But wait! Ive committed a crime... joined the website and dugg this article on my first day... Is that not the very point of this place to Digg articles that mean something to you... Well this one means something to me! I happen to find David Hewlett a hugely entertaining actor I have seen a vast amount of his work some faves as mentioned are Nothing and Treed Murray. But I also enjoyed a couple of the older ones like the Penthouse, this film excites me very much. Both David, Jane and all of the cast have very obviously put a lot of hard work into the movie and into everything concerning it and for that I'm really glad. I can't wait to see this movie, judge for myself along with the rest of Davids movies.
Rock on, I dig 'A Dogs Breakfast'! - sissicakes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Where do you get off saying something like that? Sure, we're spamming it on the front page now but why should you get to complain when the hype will have gone in a few days or so? Grow up, and if you don't like it go o something else. Nobody's making you read these comments!
Sheesh. -
