My DVD player doesn't catch on fire."
So you're basically telling us that the XBox360 is the hot new toy for Christmas? - tophfisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are people so hard for the Xbox that they will say anything just to get buzz out there?
This is as bad as apple rumors... - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's an interesting idea - I think that both MS and Sony would like to do for movies and TV viewing what the iPod and the iTunes store has done for music: make either of them the "one stop shopping center" for all things video related.
However, I think their systems may backfire in small ways if that's their true goal. If these are game systems, then they will alienate a good portion of the populace that does *not* care about games, and those people - no matter how many cool features the PS3/Xbox 360 has - will only see them as "game devices".
Though, either one of them could use that to segway other products that are not game related but still serve the video function. MS hasn't had much luck pushing the MS Media Center into homes - but perhaps another device that's only $400 that is *primarily* a video device (and a game console second, a reverse of the Xbox 360) might get more traction. Sony could do something similar with a tivo-like device that just *happens* to play PS3 games - but not pushed as a PS3.
Eh. I'll wait and see. - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you want a film distribution model, just incorporate BitTorrent and RSS support into an Xbox 360 version of Xbox Media Center, along with a big hard drive and stuff, and then you're in business."
BitTorrent is dead or dying, depending on what network you're on. Most major ISP's throttle BitTorrent in some capacity now, and eventually, all major ISP's will probably follow suit.
Time to find something new, me thinks. - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Not unless they start giving them away. I'm not paying for the privilege of DRM lockdown."
So I guess you've never used a DVD player, bought a content-protected CD, downloaded music from iTunes, used a cable TV receiver or watched a satellite feed. All of these technologies are protected by DRM lockdown.
Some people just complain because they think it's cool to do so. - Testify.Alex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/movies/Karina_Vidiocy_Longworth_of_Cinematical_a_dirty_Digg_spammer_
- cceverett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft has already said that they wanted the Xbox to be teh staple center piece in a family multimedia room. That would mean much more than just console gaming.
- julian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
If it could only download stuff in "BACKGROUND", instead of waiting on the idle screen for it to finish. I could be playing a game in the mean time. - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you want a film distribution model, just incorporate BitTorrent and RSS support into an Xbox 360 version of Xbox Media Center, along with a big hard drive and stuff, and then you're in business.
- HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not too impressed with the 360 and how it connects with the Windows Media Center Edition of XP. Guess what? The extender technology only allows WMV, MPEG1, and MPEG2. No XviD, DivX, AVI, ASF, MOV or any other video format. The iPod would have bombed if it didn't have MP3 support, yet somehow the DivX codecs are still shunned. Nobody learns. They just should have hired the guys at Xbox Media Center and let them loose.
- tksownz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The film industry and the music industry are going to eventually have to distribute their servies on these platforms because people are going to "hack" and open them to do it thereselves like the previous xbox and then the companies will just be out of money, if they were smart they would start doing it now. Just like itunes which is now like the number 4 seller of music. They let people guy music right though their program and most of the "newbies" and other people who would "share" music and other files either did not ever look for free downloads, or just didnt need to.
- sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0isn't the goal of any company to get into as many houses as they possibly can? I thought the purpose of a business was to make money... I like using my xbox to play dvds, it's a good dvd player, and it saves room. it may be large, but it's smaller than having a a console and a dvd player.

If you use pubilc BitTorrent networks, yes, they are horrible. Not so much because of ISPs throttling bandwidth, but because people don't seed on public torrents since they have no record of a ratio. Private BitTorrent networks keep track of your ratio and kick you off if you don't seed enough. So everyone tries to seed as much as possible. I often times max out my cable bandwidth on private torrents. - OmniOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I doubt that getting an XBox in every house is really the primary direction Microsoft is going, simply due to price point.
There is no doubt, however, that the next killer App will be medialess ala-cart media distribution for video/film. I firmly believe that DVD will be the last _major_ physical distribution medium.
Please: TiVo, Apple, Microsoft, SOMEBODY, bring a product to market that makes it easy for anyone to download _ANY_ of the video/film content, for play on the television and compressing for mobile players, without commercials on either an ala carte or carte blanche price scheme. If you build it, we will come - anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0it doesn't play hd-dvds, how wiil this excuse of a "media center" handle hd media distribution.
- gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What would entice someone to use Live to download movies? Most cable companies already offer a nice "Movie on Demand" service that won't monopolize your bandwidth for hours. You wouldn't even be able to build up a library with only a 20 gig hard disk.
Sony on the other hand has a lot of money tied up in Blu-Ray Discs. Six months ago I was sure that this console war was also going to decide the successor of the DVD, with Microsoft pushing HD-DVD and Sony with BD-ROM. Microsoft practically handed Sony a victory over HD-DVD by rushing the 360 out before Christmas. I think quite a few people are going to get the PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray player so they can finally watch HD movies on their HD TVs, I probably will. - KillaKev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news, and PS2 already did it.
- antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Porn industry already made the distro model efficient, just put some first run movies in the model instead of porn, and whola, instant sucess. Now that MS has some public/private keys in hardware, it will be easier to feed this model to the money-hungry whores of the MPAA and RIAA.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hacked. 360 will be hacked. Can't wait to see that.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Their gaming machines. Am I the only one who could care less about EVER downloading and watching a video on my 360? And that PSP comment above is right to (though I wouldn't call the PSP a failure). UMD movies are ridiculous. I would NEVER consider buying one, let alone at the insane full price they charge for them. If they were like five bucks I might get one to watch on a trip or something, but still I would feel like I was being ripped off.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't another videogame console try to be a movie distributor, and failed? What was it again? Something-SP..?
Oh yeah, PSP! - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@rulethirty
Maybe your's doesn't but there are a lot of others that do besides the first gen xbox... http://www.recall-warnings.com/cpsc-category-adapter_power_supply_charger_battery_1.html - terminalfreeze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, I seriously wanna know how all those stories got promoted with less diggs and more time.
- sotloo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My god...Microsoft is going to conquer the world’s living rooms, the Xbox is a Trojan horse packed with fearless little media content warriors (advertisers) I wish apple would create a media center version of OSX
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is "trojan horse" really the accurate way to describe a Microsoft product?
I say yes, yes it is. - Wizard_Prang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not unless they start giving them away. I'm not paying for the privilege of DRM lockdown.
